Edited by: Yolan on 05/06/2006 19:29:38 Edited by: Yolan on 05/06/2006 19:21:11 Thought I would get the ball rolling by starting a world cup discussion thread. Rather than have the usual mutiple threads on the same subject could the mods please sticky this thread for the duration of the tournament and lets get a discussion of the games going throughout the tournament.
link to match shedule http://eur.i1.yimg.com/eur.yimg.com/i/eu/fifa/a4fi.pdf link to groups listings http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/fifa/06/t/wp/groups_lg.jpg
As we still have a few days left before the tournament I think a good place to start would be to answer two questions.
1. Who do you think will win the world cup?
2. Who do you want to win the world cup?

I am, of course, rooting for England ... but I have thought for a while that this is going to be Spain's year. Finally. ________________________________________________

1) Don't know enough about football to say really, but probably Brazil. Again.
2) England ofc. I may not like football, but my dislikes are with the factors of all the english clubs having around 75% foreign players. Not how local football clubs were meant to be, but meh. Don't have that issue with the world cup though

For the Icelanders, a free World Cup game is live here, excellent to set up leagues in the workplace, amongst friends and/or corpmates!
As for the questions... well.. I've booked 2 weeks of holiday to coincide with the group stage so I'll be watching every game live (subscription bought!).
I'll root for the most enjoyable team to watch after the first round I guess. I've always had a soft spot for the Dutch and the Czechs and the Portuguese though.

I don't personally think England can do it I know they beat Jamaica 6 - 0 but look at their diabolocal first half performance against Hungry they produce that kind of performace against a semi decent team and you will get gubbed.

Hehe according to the Daily Mail not supporting England is akin to a hanging offence by the looks of it in the UK strangely enough I am not actually English so don't feel compelled to support your team that being said I will say Kudos to you for being proud of your team .

This is going to be a good and open world cup perhaps the best world cup since 1990.
Many very good teams Brazil, France, Argentina, England, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Spain ( although they never seem to do too well in world cups)
Dark horses Australia, South Korea, Ghana.

My heart is supposed to say England, and it does to a limited extent. I just hate all the overzelous media coverage. They claim those not supporting England are traitors but have no qualms about trying to destroy a players career/life if he plays bad. *Grumble grumble*.
I will probably support one of those fast, attacking, "screw the defence" teams (but not Brazil). Assuming any make it through the group stages...
My mother supports France though... I'm already constructing the gallows.

Will be an open W/C this time round. Argentina,Brasil,Italy,Holland will be among the favourites and of course England(chokes)
But watch out for the lesser known teams such as Russia,Portugal and the Czechs. There is a lot of teams with the potential to win it this year and IMHO it will be the most open for a long time.

If Holland wins I'll eat my hat. Holland has got a lot of big profile players, but they can't play together. They always go out rather early, despite being very highly rated. They haven't won anything since '88, and they won't win this year.

You've misunderstood the concept of support, again. You're supposed to follow a team you LIKE.
Some idiot on TV yesterday was saying that "of course, all England fans want to see Germany get beaten." No we bloody don't. We want to see ENGLAND, win. We don't give a rat's ass what happens to other teams, as long as they don't beat US. ________________________________________________

Having watched the opening game i would like to ask a question. Is this the most ungerman german team we have ever seen. When i think about German football I think about a solid defense with efficient play, today I saw a German side intent on attacking while being questionable in defense, almost the completed opposite. Do you think this is due to Klinsman's coaching style?

1) Too close to call
2) England, with huge drama and spectacular style, (not by penalty shoot-outs or set-piece goals or cheating in any way.)
Germany played in an attacking style because their defence is the worst of any of the leading contenders. But necessity is the mother of invention. Ballack's return will take more pressure of the back four, and they will get better simply from playing several matches together at home. So the old cliche about not underestimating the Germans, means a semi-final could suddenly be on the cards for them. But oh dear, what's this...?
Ecuador 2 - 0 Poland was tonight's other result in the group.
Poland simply did not show up until the last 10 minutes, in front of basically a home crowd. Their next game? It's against Germany on Wednesday 7pm GMT (as if it wasn't a big enough match already!)
That's the joy of the World Cup - 2 matches, 2 expectations confounded and an explosive second group game already an absolute must-watch on Wednesday night.

It is just the lack of talent in Germany. This team has an avery age of like 13... yes, usually germany has great defense, great combinations and lacks the guy who makes the goal... now it is the other way around. But I still dont understand Klinsmann... i.e. why he didnt bring Kuranyi, a pretty good striker and kinda experienced player... ---

Imho, so far the W/C has been a good one. Almost every game has been a high standard with open attacking football. The Argentina v Ivory Coast was an excellent game and on that performance the Argies are in with an excellent shout.
The Dutch also played some good football in thier first half and if they can repeat that over 90 mins will be a tough team to beat. -----------------------------------------------

you'll notice a keyword, it being "first" in that link you provided. you're right about your second comment beringe, it is annoying as hell. its also annoying when we americans start threads about "football", baseball or basketball and brits run in and bash americans and their silly sports. you dig hard enough, you'll find some of the threads. anyways enough of that.

Oh pooo
Before we start saying the US sucks, or only sucks at futbol, lets remember that the US is ranked 5th in the world, and lost to the 2nd ranked team in the world. Czech Republic is damn good.
Also, all you naysayers and such.
Take a look at the pools and compare the rankings. If you go by FIFA rankings, the toughest pool by far is Pool E. The average ranking of the four participants is 17! The only other pool close to that is Pool F w/ 21. (You know, the pool with Brazil)
England's pool, Pool B has the second lowest average ranking at 26. The only weaker pool is Pool G, whose average ranking is greater (lower) than 30. But that type of competition is right on target for France and Switzerland, the forever surrenderer and sideliners of the world.
I know who I am rooting for...

Yes, there is no longer any reason to bash USA for football any more. They have huge grass-roots participation, a top women's team, and MLS attendence is on a par with England's second best league now (18,000 spectators at the average league game).
USA got comprehensively mugged today unfortunately, and Japan can consider themselves a bit unlucky. I like to see a bit of "rest-of-the-world" participation mixed up in the later stages but even looking at the groups before the tournament started, it was hard to see anyone outside the Euro-South America axis getting through.
That leaves South Korea, and they have just had that bit of luck you always need. Their first opponents, Togo, are in meltdown. SK are like a slightly better Japan (no offence to either!) and with an easier group.
England? Eriksson micro-managed them through their opener, not such a bad thing really. Just as before the World Cup started, their hopes depend on Wayne Rooney, so nothing has changed.
Can anyone see any other contenders from outside Euro-South America getting through their groups?

You are on the wind-up right?
Look at USA qualifying pool...
Anguilla | Antigua and Barbuda | Aruba | Bahamas | Barbados | Belize | Bermuda | British Virgin Islands | Canada | Cayman Islands | Costa Rica | Cuba | Dominica | Dominican Republic | El Salvador | French Guiana | Grenada | Guadeloupe | Guatemala | Guyana | Haiti | Honduras | Jamaica | Martinique | Mexico | Montserrat | Netherlands Antilles | Nicaragua | Panama | Puerto Rico | Saint Kitts and Nevis | Saint Lucia | Saint-Martin | Saint Vincent and the Grenadines | Sint Maarten | Surinam | Trinidad and Tobago | Turks and Caicos Islands | U.S. Virgin Islands | U.S.A.
There are 5 teams that would be considered above average by European or South American standards. The rest are made up of part time butchers, bakers and candlestick makers.
The reason US and other CONCAF teams rank so high is that the play these part-timers loads of times.
Further evidence of the gulf in quality will be apparent when Italy give you the same bleaching the Czechs did. |

The Dutch will win for sure ^^ . USA is in a kiddie pool, but perhaps to them it is a hard pool. Then again any pool would be tough for them.
There's only one really tough pool and that is the pool with: Argentina, The Netherlands, Ivory Coast and Serbia & Montenegro. All have the talent at least to come out on top or be 2nd best if they were in another pool. Every single one of them would most definitely win from the USA.

Well, so far I have been very happy with the quality of the games. A lot of open attacking football has been in evidence and judging on what I have seen so far its still a wide open tournament that any number of team could win. Even Brazil were far from overwhelming in their opening game against Croatia although they did still show flashes of brilliance at times.
This is turning out to be one of the best world cups for a long time

Not to disrespect the USA soccer team, but Argentina is way better then the USA. The fact that you think it is the other way around shows you do not know a lot about football.
The ranking is based on the preliminary matches and the opponents that the USA had to face are hardly, truth be hard, mention worthy.
Just for your information the Netherlands won twice against the Czech Republic during the preliminary rounds bringing them close to exclusion of participation of the world cup matches (they had to compete with Norway).
I would consider, with me also the experts, that Argentina is a tougher opponent then the Czechs.
I do see a lot of potential for America in the future, but they still have a long way to go. Some of it is probably due to the lack of good and competitive concurrence nearby.

The problem the USA team has is the same as Asia and Africa. In South America or Europe, you get to play world class teams in competitive games on a regular basis, be it World Cup or European Cup/Copa America qualifiers and games. For teams like USA, you only get to play competitively against world class teams in the World Cup (or the occasional game against Mexico). Friendlies don't really help either. The Africans try to counter this problem by making the African Cup of Nations a 2 year event as opposed to a 4 year event, but this will only help so much.
As for seeing more American players in European leagues, most of the top leagues have limitations on the number of non-EU players that can be fielded, and those slots usually go to African/South American players.
With regards to stats and rankings, I won't say they are useless but Americans are overly infatuated with statistics and don't understand that they mean less in football (soccer) than they do in american football or baseball. I thought I was the only one who noticed this but my other non-american friends watching ESPN coverage noticed this as well. Mexico scoring the most goals in qualifying games does not mean they are an uber team, and Iran's Ali Da`ei having the record for the most international goals scored does not make him the best striker of all time. Mexico's record is the product of a large number of games played against "part time" teams as one poster put it, and Ali Da`ei's record comes courtesy of those 17-0 games against the Maldive Islands!
Felt sorry for Togo today with the way the game slipped away from them, and I honestly hope they learned their lesson with Otto Pfister. What they did to Stephen Keshi (the coach that got them to the finals) was deplorable and I see the pay crisis with the current coach as poetic justice. ----

Well yeah, thats why I didn't call it "good ranking system", but at least it makes an effort to be more correct then FIFA rankings. I mean you play half-assed teams for 4 years and according to stats you are uber? I think not =)

Croatia was unluckly last night, Brazil looked shaky.
I think that's probably the hardest group, when you look at it. Australia and Japan are two teams emerging as a force to be watched carefully, Croatia finished 3rd in France 98, and have always been tough opposition, and Brazil's pedigree speaks for itself
And don't get me started on the world rankings. The idea that the USA rank higher than any of the top teams in Europe is laughable. Sorry any American fans out there, i'm not putting your side down, but the cold reality is that the best football in the world is played in Europe, and you still have a long way to go to make that particular grade While it is divine to soar like and eagle, weasels don't get sucked into jet engines |

1. I think brazil will win, but i say this with a grain of salt as their performance against croatia was less than impressive. They do have the raw talent to win the cup hands down, but they really need to pick up the pace for their future games especially in the knockout round.
2. I want the US to win but sadly we sure got ***** slapped by the czecks. Heh some of the news headlines read "Reality Czeck for the US" Our game against Italy will be tough cause if they score a goal on you, the best you can hope for is a draw really. True.
That said: take a look back at the opening matches of each World Cup-winning team for the last six, seven, maybe eight tournaments. Every single one of them, without exception, stunk. They either won ugly, or didn't win at all.
Such a crappy start bodes well for us ________________________________________________

England are playing crap and are still winning. You cant do any other than put your money on a team with a performance like that. Remember Germany from previous tournaments?
The Interesting thing is now that if Ecuador draw with germany, Germany end up second in their group and England could end up playing Germany in the next phase.

Last night game was shocking!!!!! You beat a bunch of lower league players by fitness alone. If you keep playing long ball football, you will get nowhere. You have 3 of the best midfielders in the world, but hey spent most of the game with a sore neck from watching the ball being launched over thier heads to that lump of timber you call a striker.
England have not put in a performance of any noteworthy mention for ages. Can I ask, Truthfully, when was the last game you thought "OMG, what a performance by us!!!" Apart from the odd friendly against minnows I cannot remember recently sitting watching and thinking "Holy cr*p, these guys are awesome!!" -----------------------------------------------

You are right mate, that was the last time, and that was not last month, that was years ago. It has gotten to the stage that you have "forgotten" how to play good football.
You do have potentially one of the best teams, but there is a huge difference between potential and actual. Your style of play is negative and boring, you only have 1 real match winner up front(Owen is not fit) and your midfield have lost the ability to pass the ball more than 3 times without "punting" it up the park.
Couple this with the fact that you have taken a 17 year old with ZERO real experience, and you have to start asking serious questions about the people you have in charge.
In Gerrard and Lampard you have 2 guys who should be controlling every game they play in for large parts and controlling the pace of the game. So far in 2 games against no hopers they have been indifferent, boardering on inept. I really think that none of the big guns will have seen anything to be afraid of so far. -----------------------------------------------

Trade England now for Germany in 1990, or Italy in 1982 right up till the second round, or Germany in 1974, or England in 1966, or Brazil in 2002, and I'd still agree with you.
Oh, wait. All those teams went on to win the damn thing. What am I supposed to be worried about? ________________________________________________

Sure he did goal, but not so thx to his skill or anything, but just because Beckham managed to hit his head with great pass. Anybody's head would do the job there, hell, I am sure if I was standing there it would be goal anyway.
Crouch is so clumsy he makes offensive foul 90% of times ball comes close to him.
At least Owen is trying to be creative.

Well I am the eternal optimist when it comes to England and I truly beleive that playing Sweden this coming Tuesday will do wonders for our game.
Without the pressure being there of having to qualify for the next round we should be able to relax and play good flowing football, we will be able to give rooney (and walcott?) a good run out. I would also like to see lennon on the pitch from the start with owen and rooney up front.

if you can see past the gangly legs and extreme height, peter crouch is infact a very composed player, owen was crap full stop, neevr came looking for the ball at all, but crouch came time and again to find the ball from midfeild, the reason we were so poor tacticaly was beckham, all he wanted to do was pump balls over the top of their defence, it only worked 1 time when crouch got to it, now look at the big picture, height wise t&t had us beat in their defending yet our captain still thought it wise to launch the big balls over the top
keep crouch in, play him with rooney and drop beckham for lenon and then we will have ourselves a decent side, beckham has been over rated for a long time now

I don't think you can argue that Crouch is rubbish - his distribution is excellent and he's scored a hatful of goals for England recently. Owen needs a full season in the Premier**** to get back his sharpness. He looks distinctly average at the moment. With any luck Roonaldo coming back will enable us to play "one in the hole", which will help Owen enormously. But if I had to choose, I'd bench Owen and keep Crouch in there. I'd also play a holding midfielder and bench lampard too.

Argies are the new outright 4-1 favourites for the World Cup.
England are indeed rubbish and Crouch is a mere stop-gap until Owen gets fit.
But Owen showed all the signs of getting back to his best in last match vs Trinidad - not least was the couple of times he was out there on the right wing actually winning the ball, beating defenders, putting in crosses - he won a hopeless ball on the goal-line, turned his man and set up a golden opportunity for Lampard in an instant.
Netherlands - you better beat Argentina and win your group because Rooney & Owne are going to make your dodgy defence look silly in the quarter-finals!

USA can still make the 2nd round, but it's an outside chance.
They need a 6 goal difference swing, that is, they need
to beat Ghana Italy to lose to the Czech's
and both to be 3-0 (or any combination adding up to 6 goals in their favour).
And that with half their first team banned. Well it's the World Cup, stranger things have happened. Best thing is it makes the games worth watching.

Pope's first yellow card was wrong, he got the ball. Otherwise the ref was well within his rights on both straight reds to Mastroeni and De Rossi.
Anyway I got the permutations wrong above, here's the right ones:
1) U.S. advances with win by 5 or more 2) U.S. advances with win and win by Italy 3) U.S. advances with win and win by Czech, if U.S goal difference is greater than Italy goal difference. 4) U.S. advances with win and tie in Italy/Czech game, if tie is a 0-0 tie or 1-1 tie and U.S. wins by 4.
Number 2 is interesting.
If the Italians' natural instinct is to go for the draw, they may end up second to Ghana, and facing Brazil in the next round. Anyway USA needs to beat a Ghana team who is also going for glory so the odds are against them but it's not as gloomy as I first thought for the USA.

TBH what'd be most interesting of all is Italy-Czech republic being a draw. That would mean that the USA and Ghana both need to win, and a draw wouldn't do either of them any good. True, the USA win would have to be by four goals, but hey - what a game to watch that would be ________________________________________________

Learn the rules. Some tackles are illegal whether you get the ball or not.
Mastroeni's tackle on Pirlo was a yellow card at most, any other time. It was a bad call.
Which is part of the reason the game has taken so long to pick up in the US. Some nancy boy writhing on the ground squealing about how he could have been hurt, only to hop up and prance away laughing when the card comes out, invokes the same penalty as a deliberate elbow to the face that results in stitches. As part of our national mythos we don't like squealers. But it is part of the game, and I guess if the US is to compete effectively on the international level, that's a skill we'll have to pick up.
Soccer (and that's what it is here) also fits poorly between commercial breaks, and is thus unsuited to our national attention span. Nontheless, this country has such an embarrassment of riches and resources that we will doubtless become competative internationally, even in a game that over half the country isn't even aware is going on.
Maybe they'll teach proper tackling in drama school.

No. There's an old joke about three baseball umpires drinkning at a bar. The youngest umpire says "I call 'em like I see 'em" and downs his shot. The experienced umpire says "I call 'em like they are", and downs his shot. The veteran umpire says, "They ain't nothing till I call them something", and pushes the check down the bar. It was a yellow card and a bad call. All in one. Bad calls aren't shocking, they happen all the time. It's the absolute transparency of the melodrama that's off putting. I'd actually like to see the game take off in this country. Just explaining some of the reasons why it hasn't.
I note that you don't deny the importance of melodrama (someone around here described it as a player "dropping like they'd been shot by an elephant gun weilding sniper") in the game. It is an important part, if an embarrassing one. In American football, if there's a guy writhing around at midfield, it's because someone just broke his femur or put his eye out, not because someone tripped him. Even then they'll likely shoot him up and put him back in if it's a championship.
We prefer that our attention *****s have *******. Preferably enhanced.
But nonetheless the US is coming. It's been what, one generation since they game was played in this country by anyone except foreign exchange students and mouth breathing nerds? It's still considered a game for children for the most part, a way to get the kids in shape to play important sports like football and baseball. Not an absolute judgement there, just the way things are perceived.
But demographically, by the end of the next generation our population will have shifted to be comprised of people descended from areas with a much stronger soccer tradition. Unless our empire has it's decline in a rather precipitous manner, there's going to be an outrageous amount of resources available to people who will want to use them. As soon as cheerleaders start dating strikers instead of quarterbacks, the transformation will be complete.
Just be glad our equivalent Neds and Chavs don't care about the game. They are second to no one in ignorant violence.

From the Laws of the Game, Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct:
"Sending-Off Offences A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off and shown the red card if he commits any of the following seven offences:
1. is guilty of serious foul play 2. is guilty of violent conduct 3. spits at an opponent or any other person 4. denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area) 5. denies an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the playerÆs goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick 6. uses offensive or insulting or abusive language and/or gestures 7. receives a second caution in the same match."
Only by the largest stretch of the imagination does Mastreoni deserve a redcard according to these rules.
Pope does b/c it was his second, and because is a apparently giant moron.
No question the Italian deserved one.
How about before you start telling people to 'LEARN THE RULES' you take a gander at them, eh? I suppose every single commentator on the sport, on radio and television knows less about football than you? Yeah right.
Anyways, I feel that if you put yourself in a position to allow one or two poor calls by an official to determine the outcome, you didn't do a very good job at playing the game. But I guess in the low scoring type sports officiating accuracy can have a much greater effect than in Basketball, American Football, and sometimes baseball.
Sure hope things work out for the US, but not having fate in your own hands is for the birds.

Yay! USA soccer fans have now joined the rest of the world, united in our dislike for the Italian national team, and arguing about the rules and the ref in lengthly post-match discussions.
That was just one match. The rest of us have sat through countless world cups of Italy grinding out 1-0 wins, diving, cheating, histrionics, playing boring, defensive football with overrated players that seldom produce the goods. This is a very good sign, building up a rivalry like that and waiting 4 years or more for revenge is what it's all about. (See, for example, England vs. Argentina.)
And yes Mastroeni should have gone for his tackle, it's basically serious foul play, and Fifa specifically said that refs should consider lunging for the ball and only getting the man, not the ball, as serious foul play. But Pope should not have got his first yellow. He got the ball, did not play the man and the ball, and came in from the side not from behind. It wasn't even a foul let alone a yellow card (unless I'm remembering the wrong tackle.)
And USA can still get through on a win by 5 goals regardless of the other results, so technically you're destiny is still in your hands.
Anyway, moving on.... Well done South Korea, great fans, France are boring and past it. Japan are out really unless some kind of miracle happens and they beat Brazil.
Will England and Sweden both start trying to lose their match if Ecuador beat Germany and top the group? Now that really would be controversial.

Aww, lay off France. They should have had another goal but it was judged (wrongly) to not have crossed the line, even if the French players didn't seem to realise they'd been robbed at the time...
Still, I do admit to a small bout of laughter when the final whistle blew. Sometimes I just can't help myself. I blame Henry, it's hard to forget club team rivalries sometimes.

You are correct there bud, but IMHO football is becoming a non-contact sport. Not so long ago a hard but fair tackle was allowed, it got the players and the fans going when the 2 "hard cases" of each team went in to a 50-50 tackle.
To me, it has removed a part of the game that was there for a reason. this was supposed to be a working class game at grass roots level, played by men after a hard weeks work, now the whole "macho" aspect is gone. There will be no more Souness's, no more Hunter's or Stilles, no Bremner's. This is a fact, sad, but a fact.
Back on to the cup itself, gratz to Ghana for a great result(and a great game). Well done Korea for never giving up(thier fans were awesome!!) And well done to the Aussies who put up a great showing against the Brasil team, 2-0 def flattered them and you did yourselves proud.

Got to worry about Korea now against Switzerland, assuming France beat Togo (whose team hasn't been paid, so are hardly going to be motivated), Swiss playing for the draw could see SK going out. I so want them to play Spain in the next round too!

My bet on Spain is looking good now. They've done their usual trick of throwing in a stinker in the group phase - but normally they lose it, and go out. They've played a stinker and still won.
Don't want to waste your top-class performances when you don't need to. Save em for the semi-finals. ________________________________________________

That WAS their normal trick - playing lousy against a team they should beat in their sleep. That's why they usually go out early
Since they recovered and got out of jail with three points, things are definitely looking up. ________________________________________________

Spain have looked a good team so far. They are really good going forward with a lot of pace and movement off the ball. They did seem a bit weaker at the back, especially down the flanks and that is something a good team will benefit from, especially if the have good, quick wide men. -----------------------------------------------

Yes the refereeing was utterly shameful, especially the croatian player who received THREE yellow cards before getting off. That's not to mention that handball that wasn't called, the penalties that weren't and the ones that were, the liberal use of cards, absolutely disgraceful.
Australia is being very short changed in the WC, but we ploughed through anyways, now we're going to see if we can defeat Italy.

Argentina 2 - Mexico 1
Mexico played better than Argentina for most of the match but in the end a fantastic goal and better fitness saw the Argies through.
The only reason I wanted the Argentinians to win though was so England can beat them in the final if they both get through

Argentina don't look so hot now they are out of the group games, so my tip is for Germany to win the cup. They are the only team I've seen who look like winners. My tip: England/Germany final (haha!).

Totally agree with you. Both teams played dirty and paid the price in cards. I can't think of a single card that wasn't given entirely on merit.
Portugal were basically cheating for half the game which is sad for their fans, who are a great bunch and don't deserve to be represented by such a shower. I watched two games at Euro 2004 with the Portugese and they were awesome.
Figo should be given a ban for his headbutt, which the ref missed.

I have to agree with Baldour on this one, the ref was not at fault here. Both teams were going at it like bulldogs and some players like Figo were happy to oblige with theatrical performances.
I am yet to hear a good reason why Van Basten did not start with Van Nistelrooj. Kuyt was f***ing useless. The Dutch simply could not press their advantage for long periods of the game and deserved the early exit. I am also angry at the flagrant time wasting by the Portugese and hope England show them the way out.
And to those watching outside the United States, you guys don't know how good you have it. The commentators on ABC and ESPN are completely retarded and I am now forced to watch the games with the MUTE option enabled. ----

This was predictable really...In fact as soon as i saw there were going against each other for the next round,i knew there was going to be trouble...
Portugal and holand have played together about 10 times in the past few years, with 5 wins and 4 ties for portugal and only 1 victory for holland in all those matches, but most importantly,it was portugal who knocked off holland in the 2002 world cup and they did it again in the euro cup in 2004,so there's somewhat of a history between these 2 teams to say the least....

I have to disagree, the ref was atleast partly at fault here, he lost control of the game, if he hadnt then he wouldnt have needed to show as many cards as he did. The players knew he lost control and took full advantage which was just disgracefull and what happened after that was just a complete farce.

The game was a disgrace. The ref lost control(throwing cards like confetti does not help) and both teams were as bad as each other wth theatrics and poor tackles.
So far,as a run down of the teams through:-
Germany- Good attacking play, still a bit suspect at the back, still to play a good team so not sure of the strength.
Argentina-best game of cup by a country mile. Great going forward and tough to ***** at the back. Still favourites in my book.
England- poor, correction, very poor. Played no one, but unlike Germany, done nothing going forward. looks shacky at the back. Need to get some passing going. cannot create by punting long, high balls all game. Worst team of the 4 through to date performance wise.
Portugal- OMG, the game with Holland was shocking. 2 great attacking teams reduced to that!!!! Fast hitting attacks though, hit on the break well and looked solid at the back with a tactically shrewd manager who knows all the tricks. On current form will beat England to go through.
Good games today to. The Aussies will give the Italians a run for thier money but I reckon the Italians will edge it in a close contest.
Swiss v Ukraine. Tough one to call. The Swiss are a tough, really well organised team. Tough to break down, but could be lacking in a bit of real class upfront. Ukraine, played 1 decent game so far. Made to look bad against Spain but think they will edge it just because of the bit more class in attacking areas. -----------------------------------------------

It's not the referee's job to stop players committing fouls. It's his job to punish them. It's the PLAYER'S job to actually stick to the rules. If they don't - blame the players. ________________________________________________

Im sorry but it is the ref's responsiblity to maintain a degree of control over the game, last night he didnt as a result the players took advantage, yes the player are far more to balme for what happened last nightfor the disgraceful way in which they acted. However a decent ref would never have allowed the game to devlope the way it did.

what makes you think that
Deco misses next match due to red card, dito for Costinha. Half their decent players have a yellow card and thus have to watch their steps, including their captain and goalie. Then there's Ronaldo, who seemed injured pretty badly.

Yes they are missing 2 players Deco being the best in the squad but their subs are very strong their manager has much more than a clue and they play as a team should be a good match 50/50 chances imo

ROFL. Italy vs Australia was no contest. The whole fotball world knows it for the fact that Italians are true masters of diving and getting penalty kicks. How could Australia miss that is beyond me
On the other hand, if you play with 1 more guy for 45 mins and don't score, you can't complain when you go out on penalty kick. And Totti was cool as ice there.

Hum I feel the aura of hate, heh.
Imho you can *****, whine and call us cheaters till hell freezes, that won't change the fact that we got sanctioned with a ridicolous red card and played half of the match in 10.
On the specific matter, would *I* have sanctioned this penalty? No.
But if you look at how the referee ran the whole match (he sanctioned fouls even when some random fan farted on the tribunes), you should see from where this penalty comes from. To make it shorter: the referee sanctioned everything even remotely resembling a foul (on both sides) and this episode felt right into his 'sanctionable' cathegory.
And yes, it could have happened in Australia's favour as well. Thank god there have been no tackles near our goalkeeper.
Should Australia have won the match? If this were Boxe, yes. But it's football.

Why are you posting stuff like this? Is it trolling?
In short: - Materazzi shouldn't have been sent off. - It wasn't a penalty. - That said, Italy were undoubtedly the better team. - That said, fantastic effort from the Aussies. - Ukraine and Switzerland need shooting.

Losing a penalty battle after having been unbeaten, with no goal taken, for 4 matches, is the ultra suck. What makes it suck even more is the fact that our boys had the skill to win the penalty match too, but were too nervous. They did not miss during training...

Some parts were horrible, others pretty good... the extension for example was not bad at all. Problem was that both teams had a strong and active defense, and they hindered each other's offense so much that goal chances were rare. Kinda reminded me of the Switzerland - France match which ended 0:0 as well, strong defenses on both sides prevented the goalgetters from getting any good chances.
Thats how football works nowadays, more focus on defense, less goals. The days of 5:7 matches are long gone.

Ah, the good old days. 2-3-5 formations. My dad told me about them, how there was more goals. I argued steady this was b***dy obvious as 5 forwards against 2 defenders was a bit of a mis-match.
Back to last nights game. I am all for good defensive work, but that cannot be the only aspect to your game. Both teams refused to commit any men forward. 2 banks of 4 in front of the keepers almost all the time. This is not good defensive work, this is playing for a draw... in a knockout stage??? IMHO fear of loosing should not be paramount over the will to win. I would rather see a team I support loose 3-2 having a go, than loose on penalties having tried nothing. both teams had good forwards, but with no support they were never going to trouble the opps defense. -----------------------------------------------

The refs don't know what their supposed to be doing.. fifa should have let them just get on with it.

Germany have shown some great attacking play during the cup. The Argentinian defense has been solid, but not unbeatable so that will be a good confrontation. My worries if I was German would be whether my defense can hold the Argentinians at bay? I will be very surprised if the Germans can keep a clean sheet, you can keep them at bay for most of the game for Messi to come on, when you are tired and add that pace and skill to an already great attack. This has the potential to be a great attacking game IMHO.
England will need to step up a gear against the crafty and pacey Portugese. If they perform like they have so far, they will loose, depleted Portugal side or not. The Portugese have looked solid at the back and with the pace they have will cause any defense problems, the English cannot allow the game to get stretched or they will get ripped apart at the back. The English need to get thier attacking play sorted out, they have the players to give any defense problems, but so far have been found wanting, now is the time for Lampard and Gerrard to show how good they are and get up to support Rooney. -----------------------------------------------

Eh, I kinda doubt that. They played nobodies in their group, then they played Sweden which had defence sleeping for first 30 minutes. Here in sweden was a lot of discussion about wtf was defence doing (or not doing) in match vs Germany. Totally passive, not doing their jobs, backing down to early etc etc. Once they woke up, germany didn't score anymore.
So I'm still not convinced, but one reason germany might beat argentina is that its played at home. Thats a big psychological factor you cannot forget, but to say that Germany has offence that outmatches argentinas defence is to take it too far imo.

Germany will beat Argentina becuase steel vipers will invade the players dressing room before kick off and pwn them with dictor bubbles and carriers. England will beat Portugal because the ref for the Portugal / Holland game was an alt of Steven Gerrard and caused tremendous damage by podding Costinho and Deco. Also Portugal are unaware that when they warp to the England goal Paul Robinson is fitted with T2 multispecs and they will be unable to shoot.... Signature removed - Too wide.Laurelin |

There's never any open bribery involved; referees favour home teams. Not only is that obvious from statistical evidence, but it's actually been proven in the laboratory.
Show videos of football games to assorted referees, with the sound off; they tend to give decisions without any noticeable bias, making errors equally in both directions. Put the crowd-cheering noise on, and the errors are heavily biased in favour of the home side.
The only way you could eliminate THAT, is to turn football into an American-style game, where play stops every couple of minutes for a video replay. As long as we rely on the guy in the middle, he can't be omniscient or omnicompetent - he's only a human. ________________________________________________

Damn, Germany wins. The ref was their 12th man outhere, but no biggies. We losted some chances, and we payed for them.
Good luck to the other teams.
/me wonders for whom will root now...
Germany... I like¦m, but they just eliminated us. Plus, they have not beaten a member of ¿The 5¿ in like 5 years.
England... They are one of ¿The 5¿ (Brazil, Argentina, England, Germany, Italy), so they have their chances. But played poorly in some of their wins.
Brazil... Many think we argentinians prefer Brazil over England... Not true. We would prefer England over Brazil... Argentina-England is a nice rivalry, but the Argentina-Brazil games are instant classics.
France... France = Zidane (Nuff said)
Italy... Refs bail them out against the Aussies. They play their own football, the catenaccio. Effective, but a dread to see.
Who I now want to win the Cup? Germany... Who I think will win? Brazil... (damn...)

So far this World Cup is rewarding attacking substitutions. Let's hope Sven has noticed...
I was just thinking the same thing, as for Sven noticing i really doubt it. I belive it's impossible for the man to change his style, Mind you it could win us the WC...possibly..hopefully...please please

Well, we had to replace our gk. As you guys may know, changing gk`s in the middle of a game is rare. Maybe that killed any strat he had.
I`m proud of my team, we played better than Germany, and we are better than many of the teams that are in the Quarters, and many of the ones that will advance to the Semis.
Just a bit more work with Tevez and Messi...

I agree with the Crespo substitution, he seemed to have run out of steam there in the second half, but the best form of defence has definitely been attack at this WC.

Yeah, it was never a good strategy to lean on 1:0 vs germans, everybody knows they'll keep coming for 90 minutes. That is to me the most positive thing about german fotball, conditioning and mental stability.
But yeah, they may be running, and attacking and all that, but as I am not a nationalist, I don't give rats ass which team wins, I watch fotball for entertainment, and teams that are joy to watch are brazil and argentina, even japan was cool in this WC. Germans may as well win this WC, good for them, I'd still rather watch Brazil every game.

As my country (Australia) is out im almost in the same boat as you (the almost being that if Italy win the wc after the penaly with 5 sec on the clock i would be ****ed off) but I disagree Germany have played some nice attacking football, and it would be better that they win than some of the other teams still left, like engalnd who have consistantly played poorly

Something to do with both the Ashes and the Rugby Union World Cup both residing in England I think.
England haven't played well so far, neither has their opposition really forced them to play well. Paraguay, Trinidad, Ecuador, they barely had a shot on target between them. John Terry created Ecuador's best chance in the last round.
I can't wait for Portugal, I hope they come and attack us so Rooney can punish them on the counter ha ha ha ha!

Well judging by the refereeing in these quarter-finals, Rooney will be able to do whatever he wants. Besides, no Argentinian can understand Scouse, so he can get away with saying whatever he likes about the referee's mother and he'll be fine.
And winding up Ricky Ponting is not ungentlemanly.

I can't think of a team left that will beat Germany to be honest. I've said that since the Sweden game. They have explosives up their bottoms at the moment and you have to go back to 1982 to find a German who has missed a penalty, so that route is out for the opposition.

Portugal are a dangerous side with a scattering of world class players. England cannot afford to get one then sit back as they often do under Sven. it's all or nothing this time.
Neville is back at right back which I'm pleased about. I'm Jamie Carraghers biggest fan but he just doesn't play as safely in that position as Neville.
Anyway, I'm out the shower and off into town (Manchester).

Mmm, let's see...
1) If you didn't see the match you are just talking out of your ass, because you just don't know: ignorance of the facts makes your opinion void.
2) If you watched the game, you are talking bs again: that was a clear penalty foul (unlike the one that we had in our favour against Australia: again, I would not have sanctioned it).
3) If 2) = true then 'something is wrong with you' Even if you think that our national team is made up of a bunch of cheating pussies, you still watch our matches. I am sure that you could have your thirst for football games satisfied even if you avoided to see the five match where we played (oops... sorry, I meant made diving training).

Heh, i'll just ignore the childish post above and say this - we did extremely well to hold our own with 10 men for 40mins. I'm guessing that feels like a lot longer if your out there on the pitch and your tired. As for the penalties, portugals goalie needs a pay rise.... or we need to practice more I honestly thought we'd had a reprieve when one of the shots hit the post. Good game, better luck to England next world cup

Edited by: Alejandro Zapata on 02/07/2006 02:09:09 Congratz to France and Portugal!
I was only able to catch the first half of the France/Brazil game, and I am glad to see that the team that played the more exciting football (atleast in the first half) won. Was very happy to see a French victory when I got home. Should have TIVO'd IT!!!!!
I am so buying Fox Soccer Channel when I change TV providers.
Condolences to the Brits though. For a country so devoted to a sport, and so supportive of their team (I only saw Red & White in the wide shots of the seats), to lose in such a heart breaking manner has got to hurt.

My main reasoning is Germany or France are the only two teams left that play a mostly honest game.
Italy and Portugal could learn a lot from these two teams and cut out the diving.

Yep, remember 1982 in Seville when Schumacher blowed up Battiston as he ran out for the victory goal ; Schumacher was even not sanctionned.
We will win in Berlin.

So, Figo head-butts someone, completely unprovoked, and gets a yellow card because the referee apparently saw the incident (despite the fact he is clearly looking in the opposite direction on the replay)
But, Rooney gets the red card for pushing away a player who ran 20 yards deliberately to wind him up (a yellow card offence earlier in the tournament), after getting fouled by two players at once. And now Fifa are suppposedly investigating him for a longer ban.
Good to see they are being consistent.

Furthermore, it's the umpteenth time we've gone out of a major tournament on penalties. (1990, 1996, 1998, 2004...)
It's completely beyond me how someone who's paid professional job is kicking a ball accurately, can't hit the top right corner of the goal from 12 yards out, 100% of the time. ________________________________________________

Have you ever played football? The amount of money you're paid, or even the fact that it's your job, doesn't mean that you're any better at coping with the pressure of the situation.
Back up to date... Amazing game between the Italians and the Germans. Sorry to see the Germans go out but I'd say it was a fair result. Also best ref'd game so far.

Italy simply played a wonderful match and outplayed Germany. The addition of a forward right at the start of extra time was a great decision by Lippi.
I'm glad to see Italy go through. Not only is it a deserved win, but I grew tired of seeing Podolski clap for the ref handing out cards to the opponent. He displays a lack of sportsmanship and brings his entire team down.

totti is better then anyone at that tbh
not only him but i think i saw at least 3 times where an italy player went down to a perfecly fine tackle which resulted in a possible germany break which had to be stopped by them having to put the ball out as the italian was rolling around in pain only for the italian to get up once he sees that the ball is out of play and what advantage the germans had was gone.
yes they played very well but tbh its a joke to whine at anyone they play having a lack of sportsmanship and not saying anything about italy ;/

Aaaaaahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahaaaaaa. Poor poor Ronaldo. I'm gutted for him. .
I've honestly never seen so many Dives and attempts to cheat/con the ref in a world cup match since.... the last time Portugal played. They did not deserve to go to the final. Awesome result France - Portugal are the new Italy when it comes to cheating and diving. Italy are the new Brazil with their skillfull play. Who would have thought it?

I think the classic was when miguel torqued his knee or something and fell down Pauletta started crying for a foul when no one had touched him!! It's like who are you going to call the foul against?! The pitch?!
Riberry has been great, but he was so goofy looking when they were doing the French national anthem lol he looked so vacant.
And Henry didn't dive. IF you think that you are dumb and blind. The replay was clear, and you dirty cheats played incredibly dirty. They were shoving and tackling way out of line. Portugal will go down as the team full of scumbags, they have no character.

Yes, France is a communist country which when you are paid 100 your company give 100 to the state ; and when you reach a certain amount of your salary you still giving to the state 54% of what you've earned ; all of this to get non instruction working, no justice, no police, no army.

How can you naming a country where only one club can afford wages of a football player ? I called it a thirld world country as communist are. Did you ever heard of the riots last November ? Do you know that theres 5 million people unemployed here ? Do you know that theres 7 million people living under Ç 750 per month ? Do you know that 15 % of youth dont know reading at 11 ? Do you know that theres 6 millions people employed by public service whose employ is protected at life and when his people is retiring they retire at 55 whereas those who works in private sector retires at 65 ? Do you know that this country, my country, is insulted each day by Algeria President and no reaction from the gov because of fear of riots ? Do you know that this country, my country, did not go to Irak because of fear of riots by the French with arabs origins ?
I'm french. I know my country very well. Why all our better players, ( entrepreneurs, tennismen, etc) play in foreign land as in this ancient times East player played in Western ?
Because the state take all.For more and more poverty for all. France is world champion for anxiolytics, did you know that ?

On the plus side, you have -
Vastly superior quality of life compared to most western countries.
The best health service in the world, and all free to everyone.
A 35 hour week, and more holidays than most western countries.
The best public transport in the world.
No need to enter a war based on lies for oil, because of 58 nuclear power stations and ample natural resources.
The best food in the world, not rubbish industrially produced in disease-ridden factories.
And now a world-beating football team, for the 3rd time since 1998.
I'd take a few riots and illiterates in exchange for that any day of the week. Why do bring this BS into the World Cup thread? Perhaps you are like Jean-Marie Le Pen and think that your team is "not really French"?
Allez les Bleus, especially the Algerian-born genius, Zizou.

Here's a more football-related point you might want to consider.
England and Spain have the richest leagues in the world, attracting the best players with huge salaries.
Winning either league is now restricted to 2, 3 or 4 teams every year. Both national teams consistently underperform at international level (England World Cup wins 1, Spain 0, European Championship wins = 0 for both, and Spain's international record is arguably even worse than England's).
Moaning about top players joining English and Spanish teams? Consider the converse. England has such a dearth of top strikers that they took a striker who had NEVER EVEN PLAYED A MINUTE OF FOOTBALL FOR HIS CLUB!
(World Cuppa amusingly pointed out that David James had 3 minutes of Premiership experience as an attacker - he was made into an attacker for the last 3 minutes of Man City's last match this season. So he was more experienced than Walcott.)
The best French players go overseas, and the rest of the team is made up from a decent league.
In England, the best players either get knackered playing 60 matches a season, or languish on the bench of a stupidly rich club (Shaun Wright-Phillips anyone?)

Sounds about right tbh... same 2,3,4 teams every year for the league.... (same in most leagues tbh)
Teams that under performed on the international stage for years.... you would include both the french and the italians in that in truth.
Quite like the french though.. their league is mostly built on natural talent and developed players, and not bought imports. ______ Long ago one gorgeous night, we let the stars grow free. Yeah was wondering about Italy, but I think there are a lot less foreign players in their league.
I'd probably still consider them international underachievers though. Only one post-war World Cup (1934 and 1938 were the other wins) and one European Championship in 1968.
Also I made a mistake, - Spain won the European Championship of 1968. Italy won it in 1964.... but you've got to say, 2 World Cups and 2 EuroCups in 50 years is a poor return from the 3 "best leagues in the world".(Despite all 3 nations having hosted both WC and EC once.)
No wins for any of the 3 in 20 years - coincidentally, when all 3 leagues started to go money-crazy. (but for different reasons).
Football fans also judge the success of their teams by how well they play, and at least until they beat Germany yesterday, I and many Italians considered their team a big failure in World Cups on that measure.

It's not "reductio ad absurdam", that has a very specific meaning.
I simply meant, the trade-off between quality of life and higher taxes is amply demonstrated by England and France. Sweden's health service is better, but their taxes are.... oh yes, higher.
I am a football fan. I like to see the game played skillfully and fairly, and I particularly love the harmony and universal hope that comes with my nation in the World Cup. I'd trade a bit less rampant capitalism spoiling something I enjoy for a bit of French style "communism" any day of the week. I like "may the best team win" not "may the richest team win".
Answer this question - Who do you think will win the Premiership this year? Bear in mind the following: Chelsea won easily last year and have just bought Micheal Ballack and Andrey Shevchenko. Who do you think will win the Premiership? Anyone? Bueller...Buelller....
Compare, if you will, the draft system that keeps some US sports competitive. Yes, the capitalist USA...

I think the last month has passed Ronaldo completely by, here are some quotes from bbc.co.uk:
Quote: "We played well and did our best but the referee didn't help us," the Manchester United player said.
No ****!
Quote: "Everyone who saw the match could see that the referee wasn't fair."
Everyone on the pitch in a Portugese shirt?
Quote: "He should have shown yellow cards but he did not because Portugal is a small country."
Yes, he should have shown Portugal a few for diving! It's clear that the Portugese had a strategy for trying to gain advantage from the referee via. play acting and diving, the culmination of which was the Holland game, with 16 cards and 4 players sent off. I thought the referee last night was spot on. Thank god we don't have Scolari as the England manager.

Okay, let's consider only teams which "should" be winning the World Cup regularly. Brazil, Argentina, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and England.
That's seven teams. There's only 5 world cups in 20 years. How the hell do you expect none of them to "underachieve" by this mark? ________________________________________________

The European Cup is in some respects just as important to European teams as the world cup is at least in they eyes of the fans, so change those countries to Spain, France, Germany, Italy and England and change the every 4 years to every 2 - now we can talk about under-achievement. In twenty years there will be 10 cups handed out.

Ok I didn't state my case forcefully enough -
Post-war: Spain - 1 European Championship, 1968 Italy - 1 World Cup 1982, 1 European Championship 1964. England - 1 World Cup 1966.
Quite a good run there in the '60s for the "big 3", but only one World Cup and zero European Cups since 1968.
And that is despite plenty of home advantage mixed in there over the years.
Anyway, moving on, I've got a sneaky feeling that the sneaky Italians are going to sneak it in the final, maybe 1-0 or something. (That will put a bit of a better gloss on the record.)
All this stuff about Zidane, and can he bow out of international football with a World Cup win - it's asking for trouble. If anyone is going to put the kibbosh on this "fairytale ending" stuff, it'll be Italy.
So - heart says France, but head says Italy.

France played a great match, better than us for the whole 2nd half and the overtime.
How decisive was the "suicide" of Zidane? I dunno, but these matches live on episodes, and this particular one might have changed the tide.
Anyway kudos to France, they have been a royal pita as I feared.

I have to agree that is the only thing I can think of that would make him lose his cool like that. I know I have in the past because of it. In the end though, the italians had the last laugh.
Though this will undoubtedly tarnish his stellar career, I won't blame Zidane for the loss. He was sent off too late in the game to make any difference, and we all know that penalty shoot outs can go either way. Regardless, Zidane is one of the greatest players of all time. Contrary to ESPN's army of incompentent commentators, his achievements far surpass those of Platini. I wasn't born when Pele was playing, I was too young to appreciate Maradona, but I feel truly privaleged to have seen Zidane play the last 10 years. Though French fans probably won't say it now, but I will say "Merci Zizou" for all those years of fine football and class. ----

But it has been rumored that the italian coach is racist.. heh dno about that but they did say something like that on a football related show in france I think. And for Zidane to have headbutted the other guy(wtf great butthead btw proud of zidane) the other guy mustve said something really offending. Grats to us
and about yesterday, i agree that france made the match for 2/3 of the game, but soccer is not about who make the match but who score the goal
even if france controlled most of the game they had just 1 big chance to score (Zidane attemp who Buffon put in corner), the france penalty itself was caused by a wrong referee decision.
on the other hand italy touched a few times the ball but it had way more occasions, the goal, the log, another dangerous attemp and a goal cancelled by a millimetric offside.
for Zizou it was his fault, insults are quite normal in soccer (and in many contact sports) but still it doesn't allow someone to hit his opponent... i'm not saying that this is good, just is the way it goes... you really think that italian players where not insulted by french ones?
quite a boring match imo and not well played by both teams, but considering all the tournament and the game itself italy in my opinion was superior to franche and in the end deserved to win the match.
/cheer for us!!!

Dont know how the French can complain but then I do know the pain of loosing being half English so you search for any excuse. I thought the game was excellant tbh with both sides attacking and defending well. The first half Italy pressed hard and got back the goal, the second France where a different team and hit back with a lot of control. Extra time I'd give the edge to France again but both teams where pretty tired. I didnt notice anything bad with the ref and no real bad play by either team although there were incidents by both.
As for Zidane, I dont have to support France to be completly shocked, I spent the 5 minutes after the incident basically in shock wondering what on earth he was thinking. No doubt he was pushed and taunted to get him stressed and I dont condone that but that is part of the game to get a mental edge, even if it would seem something was said way over line. But whatever it was you simply cant defend what he did, it was not just a foul but assualt and in any other football match he would have the police on his back for it. Crying shame hes tarnished an amazing carrier with a moment of madness.
France = good game, played well but just couldnt get through, a team no one really put any money on even making it to the final but did so well done. Italy = unexpected as well, had some good matches but nothing great and basically survived in the final after France stepped up their game. After the Zidane incident however it would have been a insult if France had gone on to win.

that's why i actually don't like soccer that much... for example i prefer tennis where the ones who play better wins.
still when i see a soccer game i'm aware that is not the one that "play the better" to win, but the most cynycal one...
also looking at both italy and france i think that between the 2 was italy to play a better soccer italy vs germany was a good an enjoyable match and even the game against ukraine was not bad but the opponents where not that strong.
france instead had quite dull performance, won against clueless brazil but was never too convinced by their performance... the final is probably the best match they played but also after the first time italy was really tired and focused only on defence.
imo Argentina was the best team it lacked experience and a bit of luck (things that both italy and france where able to capitalize)... and as said soccer is about to score the goal and not to play well.

The Sun's headline is an amusing conflation of all 3 rumours about what Materrazi said around at the moment:
Subhead - What made Zidane blow his top
"YOU TERRORIST SON OF A WH0-RE!"
(Or some combination). I don't like The Sun at all, but they have cleverly covered all bases there. Materazzi's alleged insult is racist/nationalist, it's got the mother/parentage angle, and it fits on the front page.
Whatever he said, it's amazing how the World Cup drama continues to play out even after it's all over.
Lucky Rooney. Only Zidane could upstage Rooney's red card, but he did it, and with some style.
"Greater love hath no Zidane, that he make the front pages, in place of his friend."

A dog throwing up in the street, could upstage Rooney's red card in every country in the world bar one. It wasn't ever that much of a story. ________________________________________________
