Those rankings are bollox, we all know US is cute, but have no place in elite world fotball yet. Maybe in 10 years or so, if they have enough players playing in major european leagues.

True, but be careful what you wish for.
10 years could see the USA as serious contenders. Freddy Adu is already coveted by top European teams. And Johnson was impressive today.

Didn't Japan win the international baseball thing? Heh.
They may have lost, but the team doesn't suck. The soccer (football) team does. Japan simply had a better team. ------------------------ The Almighty says this must be a fashionable fight. It's drawn the finest people. - an Amarr Mercenary |

I don't have any problems with US tbh, if they came and kicked everybody's ass in world cup, that would be cool and fun to watch, hopefully. But just saying that patriotism aside, its still not there among the best, its like random european national basketball team playing vs US team of NBA pros, its just no match. Hell colledge basketball teams would probably kick euro's ass in basket.

In a world that for the most part dislikes the United STates, and its relative dominance in sporting, you think that a 5 ranking is 'bollox'? Please present proof that the rankings are 'bollox'. I present published facts, and you produce opinion. I think you can do better.
England may make it out of their pool, but not because they are worth a damn at the sport they invented.
Seriously, is there a tougher pool than the American pool?

You are on the wind-up right?
Look at USA qualifying pool...
Anguilla | Antigua and Barbuda | Aruba | Bahamas | Barbados | Belize | Bermuda | British Virgin Islands | Canada | Cayman Islands | Costa Rica | Cuba | Dominica | Dominican Republic | El Salvador | French Guiana | Grenada | Guadeloupe | Guatemala | Guyana | Haiti | Honduras | Jamaica | Martinique | Mexico | Montserrat | Netherlands Antilles | Nicaragua | Panama | Puerto Rico | Saint Kitts and Nevis | Saint Lucia | Saint-Martin | Saint Vincent and the Grenadines | Sint Maarten | Surinam | Trinidad and Tobago | Turks and Caicos Islands | U.S. Virgin Islands | U.S.A.
There are 5 teams that would be considered above average by European or South American standards. The rest are made up of part time butchers, bakers and candlestick makers.
The reason US and other CONCAF teams rank so high is that the play these part-timers loads of times.
Further evidence of the gulf in quality will be apparent when Italy give you the same bleaching the Czechs did. |

The Dutch will win for sure ^^ . USA is in a kiddie pool, but perhaps to them it is a hard pool. Then again any pool would be tough for them.
There's only one really tough pool and that is the pool with: Argentina, The Netherlands, Ivory Coast and Serbia & Montenegro. All have the talent at least to come out on top or be 2nd best if they were in another pool. Every single one of them would most definitely win from the USA.

Aye this is true, my hometown top football team : PSV has hired Beasly And he's greatly respected here, mind you PSV discovered Romarie, Ronaldo, Ruud van Nistelrooy and loads more..
Brazil won, but it wasn't that easy for them.
so Holland ftw

Well, so far I have been very happy with the quality of the games. A lot of open attacking football has been in evidence and judging on what I have seen so far its still a wide open tournament that any number of team could win. Even Brazil were far from overwhelming in their opening game against Croatia although they did still show flashes of brilliance at times.
This is turning out to be one of the best world cups for a long time
Oh and rankings dont mean a damn in football

Not to disrespect the USA soccer team, but Argentina is way better then the USA. The fact that you think it is the other way around shows you do not know a lot about football.
The ranking is based on the preliminary matches and the opponents that the USA had to face are hardly, truth be hard, mention worthy.
Just for your information the Netherlands won twice against the Czech Republic during the preliminary rounds bringing them close to exclusion of participation of the world cup matches (they had to compete with Norway).
I would consider, with me also the experts, that Argentina is a tougher opponent then the Czechs.
I do see a lot of potential for America in the future, but they still have a long way to go. Some of it is probably due to the lack of good and competitive concurrence nearby.

rofl - that system is fairly suspect as I don't consider the Aussies to be the 13th best team in the world... ----------------------

The problem the USA team has is the same as Asia and Africa. In South America or Europe, you get to play world class teams in competitive games on a regular basis, be it World Cup or European Cup/Copa America qualifiers and games. For teams like USA, you only get to play competitively against world class teams in the World Cup (or the occasional game against Mexico). Friendlies don't really help either. The Africans try to counter this problem by making the African Cup of Nations a 2 year event as opposed to a 4 year event, but this will only help so much.
As for seeing more American players in European leagues, most of the top leagues have limitations on the number of non-EU players that can be fielded, and those slots usually go to African/South American players.
With regards to stats and rankings, I won't say they are useless but Americans are overly infatuated with statistics and don't understand that they mean less in football (soccer) than they do in american football or baseball. I thought I was the only one who noticed this but my other non-american friends watching ESPN coverage noticed this as well. Mexico scoring the most goals in qualifying games does not mean they are an uber team, and Iran's Ali Da`ei having the record for the most international goals scored does not make him the best striker of all time. Mexico's record is the product of a large number of games played against "part time" teams as one poster put it, and Ali Da`ei's record comes courtesy of those 17-0 games against the Maldive Islands!
Felt sorry for Togo today with the way the game slipped away from them, and I honestly hope they learned their lesson with Otto Pfister. What they did to Stephen Keshi (the coach that got them to the finals) was deplorable and I see the pay crisis with the current coach as poetic justice. ----

Well yeah, thats why I didn't call it "good ranking system", but at least it makes an effort to be more correct then FIFA rankings. I mean you play half-assed teams for 4 years and according to stats you are uber? I think not =)

Croatia was unluckly last night, Brazil looked shaky.
I think that's probably the hardest group, when you look at it. Australia and Japan are two teams emerging as a force to be watched carefully, Croatia finished 3rd in France 98, and have always been tough opposition, and Brazil's pedigree speaks for itself
And don't get me started on the world rankings. The idea that the USA rank higher than any of the top teams in Europe is laughable. Sorry any American fans out there, i'm not putting your side down, but the cold reality is that the best football in the world is played in Europe, and you still have a long way to go to make that particular grade While it is divine to soar like and eagle, weasels don't get sucked into jet engines |

Edited by: Coahim Madden on 14/06/2006 08:39:47 Japan and Australia are decent but I wouldn't call them the hardest group. The Argentina - Holland - Serbia-Montenegro - Ivory Coast group looks a lot tougher, and they would all have a chance of going trough to the next round in any other group. -------
