Anyone tried EVE with wine 0.9.8 yet, and if so did it work? (I had some problems with the compilation so I haven't been able to try it out myself yet.)
I don't think it'll work, as apparently someone tried the CVS version yesterday, but still worth giving it a shot. _____________________________________ meep meep |

Just installed, and ran the 9.8 with a clean EVE install. Gotta say the installer works as smooth as silk. The splash works, but the moment it tries to display the log in screen.........it locks. the d3d render shows in the command line as the problem, so I'd say that wine 9.8 ain't there by a long shot yet.
More testing with 5.1 cedega..........not a happy camper here. Works more wonky than it did in 5.03. Seems like the cedega folks are more interested in NFS arcade stuff. shrugs. We shall see, as the ongooooing SAAAAAGAAA continues with our linux and EVE woes.
-sign me a tad irked at the moment, but far from defeated in the attempts to use the applications I want to use on my PC with the OS that I want. At least it works "somewhat"..............which is moren' I can say for our Mac OSX brethren. -feels da pain.

dcatz responded and asked me to post this here for you: snip....... Please relay the following information to the Eve Forums :
Regarding the Cache bug at http://bugs.winehq.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3028
This is not a bug in Wine but is a design issue with Eve's code. Eve is using findfirstfile to detect if the cache has been created. Wine is functioning fine however there is a difference in the order of errors. If a path does not exist when doing a findfirstfile, Windows returns path not found. Wine returns file not found and Eve is programmed to expect either success or path not found.
It should be possible to fix this by redoing the error checking code's order. .......................snip
He doesn't currently have an eve account as he will NOT subscribe until it is working under WINE. (He is actually doing some of the wine work).

I have been quite happily playing Eve on Cedega for some time now, but the latest patch messed up the map. For some reason, every attempt on opening the map causes the game to crash with following errors:
0008:: Bad stuff: client ignore setting select events for 0x9000a79c to 1 0008:: Bad stuff: client ignore setting select events for 0x9000a7f4 to 1 0008:: Bad stuff: client ignore setting select events for 0x9000a79c to 1 0008:: Bad stuff: client ignore setting select events for 0x9000a7f4 to 1
I haven't had any problems with esc-menu at any stage, but the game has always crashed when I have tried to check player info while in space.
I will see if latest drivers (ATI) change anything.

-quoted from the Transgaming forums--- "However, it seems the Map screen is crashing. Lately the only crashes I've gotten are from a type mismatch. A float being given when it is expecting an integer."
So that may be the newest problem....of course on CCP's side, their server side patch introduced a nasty memory leak, so who knows what has been introduced into the client?

Anybody having framerate problems under Cedega.
The desktop environment (generally GNOME or KDE) takes a fair bit of resources and continues to borrow the desktop in the background for rendering even when EVE is full-screen. If you are having nasty framerate problems, try starting up a separate X session and just run EVE through Cedega.
To do this, switch to one of the CLIs (generally ctrl+alt+f1). Then run the following command: "xinit -e cedega -- :1".
This may or may not fix the problem. But it's definitely worth a try!

The voting mechanism for transgaming is a source of CONSTANT irritation and confusion for a LOT of gamers voting. It allows a 'negative' vote when going through the game choices. Some people are selecting their own game as a +2, and marking everything else at -2. This happens enough, it pushes voted games down hard.
There are several transgaming threads just full of people upset about this, but so far no response from Transgaming.
Its not that we're not 'noticeable'....hell, we have one of the largest threads on the site, but as cedega devs almost NEVER post there, its very difficult to ascertain if they know we exist.

My guess on the map problems. CCP changed/added a couple selections to the map. Betting something got borked in there and is now causing a crash where there was none before.
Haven't tried wine 9.9 yet, but I'm not holding my breath AT all for it, as 9.8 was no closer to even getting past the splash screen than prior versions have been.
dcatz and a few others in transgaming forums have been going back and forth with problems with CCP's coding on certain things, but no apparent headway has been posted there at all.
If I had the time off, I'd go to the Gathering in VEGAS just to pin Oveur on this. They SAID they were talking with transgaming at fanfest.............but this doesn't appear like anything was said other than a general discussion of the weather or something.
If ANY of use "nix'ers" are going, please PLEASE ask what the status of Transgaming and CCP is..............please?

Apparently there is no other solution to this but to give positive vote for EVE and negative for the rest.

Ok...just want to show that i run EVE with two accounts. I have also voted for EVE in the transgaming forums. It would be great for CCP to get in touch with transgaming, since the game is (or was before the patch) almost running flawlessly.
I have tried a few solutions for the map problem by changing display settings on windows and copying it over to Linux, but no success.
CCP might sort it out with their patching-cycles after a major deployment, but somehow i have the feeling this has to do with the ESC-Menu problem. I have read somewhere that somebody is trying to patch this but i don't know how far this is.
Another method that we can try is the fix that the IGP-people use: switching changed files around from different versions of EVE, as with the resface bug. But i have not tried this yet, it could break half the game though.

'lo all, seems I'm not the only one not getting past the splash with Wine, so I just wanted to share something vaguely amusing;
It's exactly the same in Windows Vista (the dec CTP), you get the first splash, then an extremely black login-screen
/Ben
P.S. I haven't read the entire thread, so I have to ask the stupid Q: Is there a workaround (except Cedega)? D.S.

P.P.S OK, now I've read the thread, I'll give the .dat fixa a whirl (with vanilla Wine 0.99) when i start my winbox again... Oh, and to join the choire; thank you all! D.D.S
Glad ta have you here! :)
Now as to the alternative to cedega.........you CAN download the CVS version of cedega, which is free, but there is no support. Of course with various forums, irc, and such, there's not much difference, imho.
I pay for cedega, as I'm hoping (against hope I'm afraid) that it will make add to the playerbase getting linux-gaming support.

it would be nice if dcatz could release his changes for wine
btw. you get the login screen if you: - create the missing registry key that eve is complaining about (in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Shell Folders/ create an empty String Value named "Fonts") (logserver helps) - use cvs/git version, edit /dlls/wined3d/directx.c funtion IWineD3DImpl_CheckDeviceType, go to the last return in the fuction (line 1326 currently and change "return D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE;" into "return D3D_OK;" recompile and reinstall)
next problems appear when eve creates the MatchoNet cache (you need to create the directories yourself) (logserver ftw)
if the MachoNet stuff is downloaded and Eve should switch to fullscreen/login it crashes
btw. there seems to be a problem with the keyboard input if you activate other windows (you might want to enter your username into the boot.ini and boost the audio volume/disable audio completly)

From dcatz in the transgaming forums:
quote: My current changes for Wine would not change the issues with Eve. One step at a time. I have college and a job so I'm doing this in my spare time. When the time comes and if I manage to get Eve working under Wine, I will release the changes for inclusion in the main CVS tree for Wine unquote.

Well fight fire with fire. We can nega-bomb EVERYTHING! in Transgaming (ALSA support, WOW, DIrect X support, etc) else except Eve - that way Eve will be "less" negative, and rise in the ranks. Yes, it is not a very mature way to do it, but tit for tat I say. Please also support my vote for creating a SEPARATE Eve forum topic - since our "thread" is currently over 20 pages long at Transgaming. You'll find it under the vote --> review suggested polls section

Interestingly enough, EvE is top of the top 25 things to make work on wineHQ.
So give it a few months and wine will run eve, because im not paying for WineX just to run eve because I never pay for software, thats why I use linux.
Transgaming should have a donation only, not a fixed payment.

I've not been using Linux for long (Currently using it in VMware on a windows) but from what I've seen I'm liking far better than windows and am seriously thinking of making it my main (if only) OS on my pc.
For me now it just comes down to a few windows programs that I will definatly want to still want to run - EVE being the main one of these, so I hope what I've been reading in this forum does come true and EVE will work *fingers crossed* |

I tried the method of the IGP-people ;)
I fixed the map problem by using the dll trinity.dll from Build 3807. The file is located in directory eve/bin. Replace it with old version and the map works again.
I have yet to check for possible side-effects. Feel free to try help and identify side-effects.

Added my vote to the EVE poll in transgaming. it now needs 7 more people to add their vote to it. (The poll to get our own header.)
Also bombed the game voting with -2 for everything except eve as well.
Get out there and VOTE people! (those who can, anyway. -grin)

They only have build 3805 files available on the site, so i grabbed the trinity.dll from 3805 and map is working again. So far no other side effects that I can see

* Cedega 5.1.1 *
Available as of March 14, 2006 Cedega 5.1.1 brings a bundle of fixes to users. A number of fixes providing greater stability in EVE-OnlineĢ means it no longer crashes going to the menus.
Just saw this, havent had the chance to try 5.1.1, but this is a good sign.
