Hi all,
I am setting up a small group for level 5 missions. I want to have one ship 100% focused on DPS for larger targets. The mission rats varies so it needs to be fairly versatile when it comes to damage type. What is the best ship to use as a heavy hitter? Faction? Marauder? Which one?
Would appreciate input. I really want those NPC BSes to melt away.
Thanks in advance /R

Flexible damage types, against larger targets only...
...sounds like a job for Torp Golem.

Faction ships are okay. Hmm... I had my eye on a Vargur. But the Golem deals more damage even after the latest expansion?

Yeah, just fit one more painter than you would before the expansion.
Will FAR outdps a vargur.

Depends on the make-up of the rest of your gang.
If you are going to have remote shield rep logistics available, then something like
Golem - DPS - Buffer
Highs 4x Siege Launcher II's, Faction and Javelin torps 3x Small Tractor Beams
Mediums 3x Shield Hardeners (rat specific) 1x Large Shield Extender II 1x 100MN Afterburner 2x PWNAGE Target Painters
Lows 3x Ballistic Control Systems (Tech II or Faction) 1x Damage Control II
Rigs Hydraulic Bay Thrusters (I or II) Rocket Fuel Cache Partition (I or II)
If you expect the Golem to local-tank if it grabs any agro, then go with a cap injector/X-large booster fit, and make sure the pilot has at least a low-grade crystal set. IMO it is much better to buffer the Golem and have logistics provide the tank, but if your logistics is scarce or expected to be needed solely for the primary tank then
Golem - DPS - Local Tank
Highs 4x Siege Launcher II's, Faction and Javelin torps 3x Small Tractor Beams or Faction Medium NOS
Mediums 1x X-Large Shield Booster (Best Named or Faction, CPU constraints) 1x Shield Boost Amp (II or Faction) 1x Medium Cap Booster (Electrochem or II) 2x DG or CN Invulnerability Fields 1x 100MN Afterburner 1x PWNAGE Target Painter
Lows 3x Faction Ballistic Control Systems 1x Damage Control II
Rigs Hydraulic Bay Thrusters (I or II) Rocket Fuel Cache Partition (I or II)
The Torp Golem pours on some heavy DPS if you are shooting BS size and up targets and still tears up webbed cruisers hit with 2x Target Painters.
Another good alternative is, as always, pulse Geddons or Abaddons if your are fighting EM weak rats and using an armor rep logistics team.
Goodluck with your missions. --

The Nightmare is insainly good at killing NPCs in large numbers quickly.

Seconded.
Train your shield and cap skills high though. The active tank and un-filtered lasers will eat your capacitor. My sig sucks. |

Need to be careful about getting neuted in a nightmare, since you won't be able to do any damage without cap.

But Nightmare is, even being great DD, not as good against rats with high EM/therm resistance

The machariel can be a good ship and it can move faster than pretty much any other battleship and sport a solid tank, but in terms of single-type damage the typhoon outperforms the machariel by a goodly margin.
The nightmare is also a good ship but really the easier fitting allowed by the 4 100% damage turrets is what makes it a great ship since it really doesn't do any more raw DPS than, for example, a naval megathron.
If you really want a high degree of damage variability and solid effective (not raw) DPS you'll probably want to look at a missile boat like the golem, raven, naval raven, or rattlesnake or a mixed ship like the typhoon which can fit 5 T2 heavy and 5 T2 medium drones as well as 4 launchers.
The dominix, between its massive drone bay and drone bonus, can also achieve a solid amount of variable DPS but if you want to maximize that you should probably consider using projectile guns over hybrids, especially at the lower battleship skill levels when the hybrid bonus is smaller and its loss will be less noticeable.
Since you're fitting for L5 missions I would strongly recommend you steer away from a nightmare, or a rattlesnake for that matter. Both are high-end high-price ships that'll almost demand pirates come looking for you to ransom you, or just crack you open like a pinata to see what you drop. The rattlesnake's severely evil passive tanking ability might be a significant asset in a level 5 mission but I'd still recommend against it.
The machariel *might* be a "safe" choice due to its high speed, especially if you fit it for minimal (shield buffer) tank and beyond damage mods try to "nano" fit it. This will actually help you out twofold since it will not only let you close to maximum damage range faster (if you use short-range high-DPS weapons) but also let you get well away from acceleration gates and warp-in points so that if gate crashers do arrive you aren't close enough for them to immediately tackle your 700-900m (base price) ship.
The golem is another high-priced pirate magnet I'd consider steering clear of too, and the tendency people have to fit high-priced modules on their naval ravens to make them "uber-l33t hawk p!mp shi*s" would also tend to draw pirates.
That leaves the raven and typhoon, both of which can put down a fairly solid weight of fire and won't attract undue notice. In point of fact the prevalence of the typhoon in PvP and its well-earned reputation as a very nasty customer might scare away some of the lower-quality pirates from trying to attack you.
Now, if you're doing a lot of Caldari/Gallente L5s where your targets primary weakness(es) will be to kinetic/thermal damage you might also consider using the naval megathron. Not only is it cheaper than the naval raven but it's also used often enough in PvP that it might cause people to think twice before deciding that they still want to mount it's wreck's snapshot on their cyber-mantle and it'll still be able to deploy a significant amount of effective DPS.
Just a rundown of my opinions on the ships and the situation. ____________________

It goes fast enough, I still out power the 2 ravens that follow me on missions. plus you dont have to mess around with ammo types and re-loading
And nothing beats taking out frigates at range in one shot with a tachyon

Nightmares are epic for this, also taking 3 guns to volley a cruiser while 4th hits the frig just makes it so good.

Golem/Nightmare/Paladin, probably the Golem since it has flexible damage types. Vargur to a lesser extent, but the extreme falloff makes it a fun boat but a failboat compared to the golem.
