most possible CCCP answer...
'it's prolly your ISP, dude. there is nothing we can do. sorry. thanks for paying us for this crappy product. much apprieciated.

I've seen this thread before, but never looked into it as I had no idea what a socket is. Still don't know what one is, but whatever it is, it's been closing on me for the last couple of days.
Not having this problem with anything else. I don't want to be a regular in a 46 page thread.

Not sure if this will help people, but It's worth a try.
Whilst examining my network traffic, I noticed I had many many TCP/IP checksum errors in traffic to eve. (Which was causing many retransmits as "pushed" traffic was "losing" ACKs).
Ive tracked this down to my crappy on-board NIC (marvell generic yukon), which is calculating checksums incorrectly for this type of data.
A fix/workaround for this is to turn off "HardwareChecksumming" in the network device properties tab.
To do this on XP pro, open "Network Connections", find your network device and right click it. Select "Properties" then click "Configure" and find the "Advanced" tab. Select "HardwareChecksumming" in the list and set the "Value" drop down to "Off". Now click OK. This will reset the network.
As I seem to have a steady connect most of the time now, I cant really tell if this will help "socket closed" errors for anyone. What I _do_ know is it's cleaned/reduced my network traffic to eve considerably and lag _seems_ less than it was.
Happy hunting.

Thanks for the suggestion mate, unfortunately (at least for me) it has no effect, the problem keeps happening.

Edited by: Levanel on 29/03/2009 16:07:29 Before QR, I started using ssh port forwarding service to maintain a stable connection to ccp. Maybe twice as many hops and much slower response time (not recommended while in fleet) but without any connection or socket drops.
Now, I'm beginning to see drops even while using ssh port forwarding. From what I can tell, the route packets take from my originating line and port forwarding service are quite different.
All this was before I've seen 30+k concurrent eve connections (when you log in). Now the most I've seen was 45+k.. on those days, socket drop are the worst for some reason. Here are some messages that pop up right after the character selection page:
"The connection to the server was closed."
"Connection to server lost."
"The transport has not yet been connected, or authentication was not successful."
^If authentication wasn't successful, how was I able to get to and past the character selection page?
I don't suppose telia.net and telecity.net are related but they are the bottlenecks right before 87.237.38.200. I was wondering why CCP have EVE hosted in London exclusively when they're based in Iceland? Wouldn't putting servers around the world (or at least one in America and one in Asia) be beneficial to everyone? Maybe that's the problem right there. |

...and their reply solves... *brbrbrbbr* (/me makes Lewis Black famous noise) nothing!
Ergo... we are still waiting for an answer (either they do anything to fix this **** or they admit that no one in CCCP gives a **** about it)

yea..have the same problem here.. and it often comes in a bad time ; while fiting rats..so u can imagine what can happen when socket closes in that situation.. but actually we are to blame..we are blaming ccp while all the time all of us keep login in to eve and continuing playing.. i bought a time card few days ago so im going to playit out till it expires ..if the problem doesent stop till then ill not buy another time card..easy as that ; im not going to pay for smth that doesent work..and i would suggest u do the same ,that way maybe ccp will look in the problem ; when they realise theyr loosing players on a massive scale..
best regards to ya all ! hope this resolves before that ; i would like to play eve but not like this..

Pretty much.
You all need to get with the program, and realize that this issue will NOT be addressed by CCP. So, you can do one of three things:
1--Deal with it; 2--Ragequit, or; 3--Fly to Iceland for FanFest and punch someone in the face.
Either way, you need to come to the realization that CCP doesn't consider this "their" issue, so stop whining. God knows I have.

Was able to get my laptop patched, and took it down to the library to test the connection there.
Totally different packet routing, no drops.
I'll be playing from there on the weekends; I'll at least be able to help out with corp ops.
During the week I will just skill switch and do the industrial stuff...

Hey,
I had no problems playing EVE so far. But as of today I get disconnected after 20-30 seconds when I log in.
I get the message: "The socket was closed" following by "Connection to server was lost".
I haven't changed my ISP, Router, Computer settings. Everything else works perfectly fine (other online games, and all other internet activities). EVE is the only thing having problems.
This disconnecting started happening today. I don't know why, but like I said, this never happened before nor did I change any settings.
Right now the game is unplayable. Every single time I log in, in-game windows just don't load and I get disconnected.

hi all fellow sufferers, i've found what seems to be a work around for the problem, thats using a VPN Tunnel, in short a program that connects to else where and allows you to connect to eve through another network thats not affected so much by the problem, http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=620747&page=6 this links to where i found the solution in the first place, i'm surprised that ccp havent suggested it to those people having the most problems.
let me know ingame if this works for you

the end of petition #3
Hi,
Thank you for the file.
Well as my colleague mentioned it in one of your previous petition, packet losses are only relevant if you can continue to see at least the same amount lost on the next hops until the last one.
I can see that it's the case for you in a couple of cases only. And in such cases, there's unfortunately nothing we can do so far, the issue not being under our direct control, I'm sorry.
Best regards, GM Surmoi EVE Online Customer Support

Had numerous disconnects and socket closed errors the other night. Turned off computer, came to work and was about to begin my forum warrioring when i came across the issue with the UI not sync'ing up. Another member made a mention to check the system clock. I began to think at work about how the system clock would affect the game and if the solution to the problem for me could be that simplistic.
Got home that night and logged into eve, took note of the time, my system clock was running approx 30-45secs ahead of eve client's clock. Was promptly d/c'ed with socket closed error. -=NOTE=- the only setting i've changed is the system time -=END NOTE=- Set my system clock back a minute so that it read slightly slow to the eve client clock. Logged back in and was never dropped again.
A friend of mine was complaining about numerous problems along the same line and told him of my issues and how I resolved it for myself. Being an IT guy he laughed at me and told me numerous reasons that it shouldn't and can't work. After 8 disconnects inside of 4 minutes he switched the time on his system to read slightly slower than the eve client and has not had any issues since.
I am merely sharing my experiences with the community in hopes that something as simple as this may help others. I am sorry if it does not and hope that you are able to find a solution or ccp is able to find a solution soon.
