Wonder what this could be
NASA to Announce Success of Long Galactic Hunt
WASHINGTON -- NASA has scheduled a media teleconference Wednesday, May 14, at 1 p.m. EDT, to announce the discovery of an object in our Galaxy astronomers have been hunting for more than 50 years. This finding was made by combining data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory with ground-based observations.
To participate in the teleconference, reporters must contact the Chandra Press Office at 617-496-7998 or e-mail [email protected]. Live audio of the teleconference will be streamed online at:

Doubt it'll be THAT exciting if they're making us wait until Wednesday. If they'd found an Earth-sized planet, or a photo of the Big Bang in action, or a galaxy signalling in binary, the news would probably get out before the official formalities.
Probably.
Hopefully not. ------

Those are, as far as I know, the only projects that has been going on since the foundation of NASA. Given the involvement of an X-ray observatory I'm guessing the former.

Well i9t looks like the discovery was made by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory.
50-years is about as old as modern day astronomy is. NASA itself is 50 years old.
I disagree with them planning ahead for a news conference means its not all that important though. They are using all that time for media to go and cover this.
Something that we've been trying to find for 50-years is not a small thing.

It's a black hole. Chandra is an X-ray observatory, black holes are visible in x-rays. We haven't confirmed the existence of one yet, so I figure that's the big revelation.

Pfft. NASA != Modern Astronomy. It's a part of modern astronomy, but not synonymous.
I'd call modern astronomy about 400 years old. At the very LEAST 70 years old (the birth of radio astronomy), or perhaps 60 years old (if you're going to be very harsh) when the first major radio astronomy programs were launched in the wake of WWII. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. Wow, looking at the article, I was sure it was going to be a black hole. Specifically the one at the centre of the galaxy. The only other thing I can think of that NASA have been looking for for 50 years is an alien spaceship or radio transmission. That would be awesome, but I won't get my hopes up. It's probably going to be something really boring like a nebula.
OOH I just had a thought. Nemesis! The supposed dark twin of the sun - a brown dwarf star that orbits the sun with a period of 3000 years and is too dark to see most of the time. If I understand the doomsday theories surrounding it, they said it would first be spotted in 2008. OooooOOOOooooOOHH! --------------------------------------------------------------------

Possible, its awesome, we would be a binary but it would ultimatly mean little changes. A wormhole however.... it would reinvigorate physics, when you know it can exist in nature, man does its best to make it himself.

Actually, the fact that they're waiting until Wednesday indicates it IS something really important. They're making sure they get good media coverage when they do finally announce it - make sure it doesn't get buried on the back page of the newspaper. --------------------------------------------------------------------

NASA Special Report
After 50 years of searching, NASA have discovered what they have.... for 50 years searched for.
Many have asked how? Why? But now it is know....
Training the Hubble Telescope on Uranus - a wormhole apeture has been spotted, spewing odd socks into the upper atmosphere.
NASA has begun reverse enginearing Washing Machines in an attempt to understand how Humanity has had wormhole technology for half a century, without realising it.
Back to the studio.....

The existence of a dark binary companion to the Sun was only suggested in 1985, so the announcement is unlikely to be it. I doubt it is going to be any Planet X either, as only a truly exceptional Oort-Kuiper object would warrant a press conference.
I think a supermassive black hole or pulsar in the galactic core is more likely to be it.
Then again it could turn out to be something really boring.

Yeah, to be honest, i'm pretty sure we've proven black holes exist already. We've seen stars "blink out" when a black hole has moved in front of them. We've seen their x-ray emissions, though i can't remember the name of this property of black holes. Also we've seen the stars at the center of our galaxy go on orbits like comets around some "mysterious" point in space. Also we know quasars are just swirling clouds of gas around a blackhole when it sucks up matter from stars etc.
I doubt it's "a black hole." If it's something else that has to do with a black hole then i can understand. I wasn't aware we had the technology to find smaller planets yet. I thought the telescope that was going to be built for that was due to go into orbit in about 4 years or so...
I really wonder what it would be. I mean, personally, I think only really BIG discoveries would be postponed like this in order for them to "prepare for the public." KLINGONS... that must be it >_>

An asteroid was my immediate thought as well, Wednesday is probably when they figure it'll hit us. Imagine a stern guy walking up to the mics, laying down the cold hard facts that we're all going to die in the next three minutes, after which he starts singing Never Gonna Give You Up. Best way to handle it, everyone's gonna be so annoyed at being rickroll'd that they forget to panic.
I hope I'm wrong, a wormhole would be way more fun. Then we'll just have to construct a gate and... well, you know the rest.

Whatever it is, it can't be that important. NASA's Deputy Director will be attending a Future Forum discussion in Calif. that day (the 14th). See news release about that here. If this announcement is really going to be a major deal, I would think she'd be present during the teleconference, seeing as the Chandra X-Ray observatory is part of NASA.
Whatever it may be, seeing as it was found by Chandra, my bet is they found yet a bigger black hole than the last one (I believe the current record stands for a blackhole with a total mass estimated to be 14-16 times that of our Sun?). I can't see them finding a wormhole, as from what I understand the type of radiation put out by a wormhole is very very similar to a blackhole. Also, wormholes are as of yet still a purely theoretical feature. The only thing about it possibly being a wormhole is that the guy who first coined the term (by the name of John Weeler) did so in 1957. This is more than 50 years ago :)
As someone else pointed out, putting out a press release on an upcoming announcement is pretty normal in the scientific world. This way, people can prepare to find time in their schedules to actually listen in on this teleconference.
On a side note, it's funny how they make an announcement of them making an announcement :) (yes yes, I know why they do it that way (see above) ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well, seems I was wrong, it was more like 24 solar masses. Then again, I see where I got thrown off; I was thinking of "Stellar Mass" blackholes, handily bypassing the fact that there's more than one classification for a blackhole. My apologies. See the news article here on the largest confirmed Stellar Mass black hole.
For those of you interested in this kind of thing, go read up on blackholes (wikipedia has a lot of info on them), they're fun.
-- Edit -- I know what's going on; Chandra has found the radiation emitting from the EVE Gate

I'm putting my nonexistent money on the BH at the center of the galaxy. We've seen evidence of them in other galaxies, but never in our own.
On a side note, it's not gonna be a Quasar, as Quasars are only seen at billions of LY distant, so they're most likely just young, energetic galaxies. The Milky Way is no longer young. It was probably a Quasar long, long ago, but stopped being one billions of years ago.

TBH i'm pretty sure we already have decent evidence for the black hole in the middle of our galaxy. I've seen an animation of the stars at the center of our galaxy move in a highly elliptical orbit around some "point" speeding up as they got closer. It might have been on NASAs site actually... *shrugs*

We only have anecdotal evidence, i.e. there's one in most other galaxies, so there should be one in ours. As far as any evidence you've seen, it's probably based on the supposition that what holds for other galaxies should follow for ours.

As much as I'd love this to be proof of the existence of extra terrestrial life, The first SETI experiments were conducted in 1960 and the first SETI conference was in 1961, I serious doubt that will be what's revealed.
The black hole at the center of the galaxy is pretty much accepted already, it's dormant but maybe it's feeding again? (anthropomorphising 4tw).
I'm sure an asteroid headed to Earth wouldn't be announced with a pre announcement several days earlier.
Proof of dark matter?
All I can say is roll on Wednesday as my interest is piqued.

seti is lol, i feel sad for them, they actually think they're doing something worthwhile that will ultimately prove important and groundbreaking.
the roswell incident happened approximately 50 years ago... well actually more like 60 but 10 years after the interest of the people were definately peaking and ppl started to search for proof elsewhere since they were officially being denied the truth and lied to.
and you know what's interesting, back in 95, you know.. when some like you were doing.. basically the same thing you were doing now, ignorantly pointing your finger for some good laugh, back then ppl laughed at the "nutters" who thought there was some secret base called area51.. well what happened that year? they revealed that it in fact did exist don't you know.. and ppl's jaws dropped to the floor, what's the matter, cat got your tongue? don't worry buddy it'll be allright, we told you.. but you didn't wanna listen.. it's cool tho.
so you laugh it up fancy pants.. the only reason you do it is because you couldn't handle it if you saw it to be true. but instead of preparing yourself for the inevitable, you choose to laugh and ridicule just till the last minute, whereafter you'll run screaming to the corner of your room and assume the fetal position as your world view is changed forever.

the truth has no hollywood glamour, no million dollar actors with rehearsed lines, it's coarse and it's unedited, filled with mistakes and errors in judgement, and it's real in the sense that it becomes so real that you don't really want to see or hear it, you would rather just want to see a hollywood movie, nevertheless it's the truth and you'll have to square with that some day.

no wait..
anal probing.. huh?
abductions: yes?
abductions by aliens? nah that's the exception to the rule, try black projects using drone lifeforms (the greys who seem incapable thinking for themselves) to perform it so they don't have to get their hands dirty. and then try mrp (memory restructuring program), or haven't you heard clinton admitting and officially apologizing for mkultra? oh i'm sorry that you didn't get the memo.
it might surprise you but et's are not here for our entertainment either.. if they do something it isn't to tickle our imagination or put on some kind of show for us without any reason.
do you honestly think an advanced civilization will travel from distant stars to just for no reason go show off to some primate hick on earth so the hick can get a kick out of it. get real.
the reason they're here is for many reasons but primarly because as the case is with kids, they like to mess around where they are not supposed to and sometimes take what is not theirs to take. which is why they have for instance disabled nuclear weapon silo's synchronized across the US in the past to send the ppl in charge a little message.
or you think it's just a coincidence that foo fighters started showing up in ww2 as we were blowing eachother to kingdom come.. there are no coincidences in what a general tells his people to do on the battlefield, and he damn sure doesn't do it for peoples amusement. in the same way there is damn well no coincidence or childish stupid behaviour in what a advanced et civilization is doing here, mistakes yes, coincidences, not bloody likely. there's allways a very f'ing good reason, for everything important.

the information in the linked video is presented as is, mistakes and logical errors included, you can't blame the ppl who are in the process of finding out the whole truth and nothing but the truth for doing so and making mistakes along the way, when the ones that have the competence and the know how to present it in a clear concise and precise manner to the public, are exactly the people that are lying their asses off on a daily basis and purpously misinforming in an effort to partially cover their own asses till they get the **** sorted perpetuating the inevitable logical errors that will occur in the material made by those attempting to put the pieces together.
you can think what you will but i'd seriously advice you to prepare yourself,
and to do so now,
or atleast sooner than later if you're one of the "wait till the last minute" ppl. prepare your mind for it as much as you can, because there's a very real prospect in some ppl breaking down and going crazy over it when it finally comes out (which is partially why it was hidden in the first place). and it will, it's not a matter of if, it is only a matter of when, it is inevitable.

Sorry, but the guy making that particular video was an idiot. "It's not a plane or a helicopter, so it must be of extra-terrestrial origin." That's like saying "It's not a giraffe or a hippo, so it must be an elephant."
Edit to reply to your edit: I won't go crazy if it transpires that aliens have been with us for a while. I'll be going "OMG that's so cool!" I'm just not getting my hopes up --------------------------------------------------------------------

Edited by: 7shining7one7 on 11/05/2008 13:38:51 If you think it'll be like "oh we are fuzzy et's and come on our spaceship and go walk all over our ******* home systems" you'll be highly dissapointed.
it'll be like "we are here and you are there and we exist and have existed since you were basically nothing.. and that's that now play nice and go on about your f'ing business and stop acting like morons" an advanced civilization has no f'ing interest in a bunch of primitive morons that screw eachother over, running to their home systems or getting their advanced technology that we're not ready for.
and what do you think the corrupt bastards have been doing in the shadows, intially plotting to take over the earth with that technology, enslaving the population so they won't argue with the decisions, and then going out in the universe and start to conquer galaxies like a frigging adolescent child.
that was before the creators of it showed up and started putting them in their place saying.. what exactly is it you think you're doing, because whatever it is you think you're doing, you ain't f'ing doing it motherf'ers!
we're not special, no more than them, and if you think different then you'll need a reality check sometime in the future.. we're only important to them in the sense that there'd be no f'ing sense in evolution going to waste, but that's pretty much where it ends.. we are not allowed to blow eachother up on a global scale, and we are not allowed to mess with our sphere in such a manner that we are doing now, but after assistance has been made in that regard.. we're pretty much on our own.. to get our **** sorted and to learn things the way things are supposed to be learned, through trial and error. not by leaping into the future with technology and advanced knowledge that we have no frame of reference for utilizing properly or in a good manner.

All I said was that it'd be cool. Never said I expected to gain anything.
Anyway, let's assume your initial assertion is correct. How do you know how these hypothetical aliens think? At the risk of being a Captain Obvious, they're not human. They probably don't think like us. They may well take a bunch of people back to their planet just to see what they'd do. Or give George Bush an antimatter bomb just to see what HE'D do . They may give us the cures to every known disease just because they want to be friends and we're the first sentient life they've ever encountered. Who knows? --------------------------------------------------------------------

SETI isn't NASA. It's not aliens.
Whatever it is, it's an x-ray source. This also rules out your planet X theory. If it was in visible light, Hubble would have seen it, if it was infrared, NEAR would have, but it was seen with an x-ray telescope.
Oh sh... maybe it's x-ray aliens from planet nemesis! Aghaghaghagh!

Edited by: Amastat on 11/05/2008 17:27:43 The NASA Announcement
Chandra X-Ray Observatory's mission is to explain the universes origins, evolution, and destiny.
Anything that emits X-Ray's is readable to Chandra; Stars, Supernovas, and black holes are the most common thing to emit X-Rays. Moons like ours also are able to reflect X-rays very well, so they can be found using X-Ray telescopes too.
What has been found is something we have been searching the galaxy for 50 years to find.
So - it's either:
-A type of theoretical class of Star, Black Hole, or Supernova -A kind of theoretical stellar phenomenon (such as a wormhole) we have not found and proven before -A type of event occurred with something that emits X-rays which we have never been able to observe before -A Moon/planet was found reflecting X-rays, which later turned out to be very earth-like while using other telescopes. In this event Chandra only found it, they did not confirm it -They found Waldo -They found Bin Laden ____________________

There has been rumors that right after the advisory was put up by NASA, they are now aiming to aqquire a super computer capable of clocking 10+ petaflops by the year 2012. Nice year to pick it
As I said it's nothing more than a rumor - can't really verify if its legit or not. ____________________

A Doomsday theory, about a ancient Mayan prophecy about the world ending in 2012.
Just google: Maya prophecy 2012
You should find all sorts of stuff about that.
Basically the Maya colander has that day marked as which we have labeled the "Birth of Venus". It basically is a prophesied day in which there will basically be a doomsday - however a new world will rise from the old ones ashes.
The thing is that this happens every 1000 years according to the Maya, and we still don't know everything about this. It also had some role with their disappearance of them; best guess is they were aware of Europe landing in South America and they saw it as a Omen and just vanished for that reason. ____________________

Yea, it's about as fascinating as the Y2K bug
In all seriousness - it is a prophesied year in many religions and cultures, not specifically the Maya - which is really weird. The current popular theory on what will happen in 2012 is the magnetic poles on the Earth would reverse.
Here - I'll make people think for a change. In response to the rumor about NASA wanting that 10-petaflop server.
-2012 is the prophesied year -Binary Code operates on 1's and 0's to form its code. Quibits are specific to quantum computers, they operation with both 1's and 0's, or both at the same time, which are represented as 2's
See? I can do it too, so easy ____________________

Vatican: It's OK to believe in aliens
VATICAN CITY (AP) - The Vatican's chief astronomer says that believing in aliens does not contradict faith in God.
The Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, says that the vastness of the universe means it is possible there could be other forms of life outside Earth, even intelligent ones.
In an interview published Tuesday by Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Funes says that such a notion "doesn't contradict our faith" because aliens would still be God's creatures. Linkage

seti is lol, i feel sad for them, they actually think they're doing something worthwhile that will ultimately prove important and groundbreaking.
the roswell incident happened approximately 50 years ago... well actually more like 60 but 10 years after the interest of the people were definately peaking and ppl started to search for proof elsewhere since they were officially being denied the truth and lied to.
and you know what's interesting, back in 95, you know.. when some like you were doing.. basically the same thing you were doing now, ignorantly pointing your finger for some good laugh, back then ppl laughed at the "nutters" who thought there was some secret base called area51.. well what happened that year? they revealed that it in fact did exist don't you know.. and ppl's jaws dropped to the floor, what's the matter, cat got your tongue? don't worry buddy it'll be allright, we told you.. for.. many many years.. but you didn't wanna listen.. it's cool tho. and i know you might not want to believe this, but there's no real compelling factor in making up imaginary fairy tales without any basis whatsoever, ppl do actually have something better to do with their time. it's just that when the evidence is screaming to the heavens will anyone listen, it's just kinda hard to avoid becoming aquainted with it. and you know, some of us have the outrageous notion that you actually have the right to know (wow what an extraordinary concept huh). we are not here for your entertainment, real life stories is about real ppl, not some idiot video game with imaginary events and depictions meant to entertain and amuse.
the truth has no hollywood glamour, no million dollar actors with rehearsed lines, it's coarse and it's unedited, filled with mistakes, lies, deciet and errors in judgement, and it's real in the sense that it becomes so real that you don't really want to see or hear it, you would rather just want to see a hollywood movie where everything is the way you think it is/should be, the truth isn't pretty, it's like the dirty little secret you hide in your closet with the rest of the skeletons, the stuff you don't want to look at, but know is there. nevertheless it's the truth and you'll have to square with that some day.
so you laugh it up fancy pants.. the only reason you do it is because you couldn't handle it if you saw it to be true. but instead of preparing yourself for the inevitable, you choose to laugh and ridicule just till the last minute, whereafter you'll run screaming to the corner of your room and assume the fetal position as your world view is changed forever.
WE DIDN'T LISTEN!!!

Well whoever is in the background sounds like they are speaking pretty casually and its nothing top-secret, but It sounds like its clear enough where it can be amplified. ____________________

Edit: there's a point where the guy talking, his voice distorts and sounds all mechanical. Then everything after that is silent. WTF? When listening live, I know there was stuff after that. Stuff about moon crickets, swoogies and vaginas.

It's in a temp folder under documents and settings/local settings/temp
I have no idea why it stopped recording. I have about 11 minutes of elevator music and people talking, then it just cuts out and the rest of the 44 minutes is silence. I didn't get the swoogie guy or the vagina guy. --------------------------------------------------------------------

In astronomy, they like to say that an event is happening now if we're seeing it happen. There's even a school of thought that defines events as not happening until the light cone hits us. Personally I prefer not to define time that way, but will admit that it's convenient for astronomers to think in those terms.

It's actually a more natural definition of time if you think about it. That way, any wierd effects you see are not optical effects, but relativistic ones. --------------------------------------------------------------------

NASA fails.
Not that this is a new thing for government to do, but honestly, a huge announcement is the location of a recent supernova? That's not important. Important is announcing you've found evidence of civilization on other planet, or that a UFO crashed o earth, was recovered, and not immediately covered up by the government that found it.
Or even that they've found a wormhole that they were able to send signals through. While I'm sure the supernova stuff is big to the scientific community, this was being treated as some history-changing event.

If you expecting NASA to tell you about anything interesting, you will be very disappointed. Its a military agency. They are not going to tell you anything about other civilizations and life forms if they exist. Why should they?
