WASHINGTON -- NASA has scheduled a media teleconference Wednesday, May 14, at 1 p.m. EDT, to announce the discovery of an object in our Galaxy astronomers have been hunting for more than 50 years. This finding was made by combining data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory with ground-based observations.
To participate in the teleconference, reporters must contact the Chandra Press Office at 617-496-7998 or e-mail [email protected]. Live audio of the teleconference will be streamed online at:

Doubt it'll be THAT exciting if they're making us wait until Wednesday. If they'd found an Earth-sized planet, or a photo of the Big Bang in action, or a galaxy signalling in binary, the news would probably get out before the official formalities.
Probably.
Hopefully not. ------

Edited by: Nomakai Delateriel on 10/05/2008 21:37:21 Either definite proof of a Black hole or of intelligent life.
Those are, as far as I know, the only projects that has been going on since the foundation of NASA. Given the involvement of an X-ray observatory I'm guessing the former.
EDIT: A third option is definite proof of a planet suitable for human terraforming. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. It's given freely, and only grudgingly retracted when necessary. |

Well i9t looks like the discovery was made by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory.
50-years is about as old as modern day astronomy is. NASA itself is 50 years old.
I disagree with them planning ahead for a news conference means its not all that important though. They are using all that time for media to go and cover this.
Something that we've been trying to find for 50-years is not a small thing.

I would guess an image and the exact position of the black hole in the galactic core.

It's a black hole. Chandra is an X-ray observatory, black holes are visible in x-rays. We haven't confirmed the existence of one yet, so I figure that's the big revelation.

Quite obviously, I hope you're right. Never would I be happier to be proved wrong ------

Wow :P that's just as cool than. I bet Steven Hawkins is going to become even more popular than he already is.
I was kinda hoping for the Jovian Titan though :P ____________________

Pfft. NASA != Modern Astronomy. It's a part of modern astronomy, but not synonymous.
I'd call modern astronomy about 400 years old. At the very LEAST 70 years old (the birth of radio astronomy), or perhaps 60 years old (if you're going to be very harsh) when the first major radio astronomy programs were launched in the wake of WWII. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it.
