LONG range artilery/bombing - Big Blob Killer (idea/suggestion) part 2
Hello,
This is a mutation to Pliauga's orginal post titled LONG range artilery/bombing - Big Blob Killer (idea/suggestion)
* This Supergun / Artillery has a long range + area of effect damage. (That would mean minimum 300+km range, perhaps maximum of 1 AU range. some suggested range into the next system, however that seems over kill and encurages more gate camping.)
* not able to fire at anything under 300km (To make it vulnerable)
* This is not a ship, but instead a very large ancorable Artillery object. (That u would need to interact with to fire, such as right clicking the ancored object would bring up its targeting interface, meanind you'd have to be with-in 1.5km to use, and it would take approx 180 seconds to ancor / unancor)
* The round/ammunition would need to be huge, in fact the ancorable object itself would only be able to load 1 round, so you would basicly need an industrial ship next to it feeding it ammo. (this is its weakness, the industrial ship has to feed it ammo and is the same guy controlling the interface, kill that guy and u can potential steal the artillery)

I've read serval ideas many of you have. I think this is different then what many of you have proposed. |

It's certainly intresting, the rounds would have a MWD built right into them, so they would be insanly expepensive, but quite frankly the only people I see using these would be alliances to make it even more impossible to uproot them from their areas.
still, interesting |

I like some of your ideas on the subject, mainly the range thing, and the huge ammo (firing from another system is ludicrous). However I think it should be a pilot controlled ship, and then require a target painting ship on station to designate targets.
I think the idea of having to have an industrial there to feed the ship ammo is nice, as it gives industrials a useful combat role, other than resupply ship :)
The problem I can foresee is that the shell requires a flight time, so I am not sure how that would work out, perhaps they would have to work out a velocity it should have, so the further away you are, the safer, but the longer it takes to put rounds on target, and the less accurate you are, with accuracy for this case being measured in degrees deviation, with a skill to decrease it.

This thread is utterly pointless. Utterly. Can I suggest that you repost this in the first thread and discuss it there? Or at the very least change the sodding title of this thread?

Element 22, I was generally seeing this geared toward offense, rather rather then defensive but I can see what you're saying here.
-------------------- Velox Idolon,
Reguarding the industrial part I agree as well.
--------------------- J'Mkarr Soban,
The reason I did not reply with this in that privious topic was because what they're talking about is going in a different direction. Including the part where they are talking about bombing an entierly different system. . Dasfry, CEO Demios Corporation

If bombs were fixed, they could be pretty useful, they are gimped too hard now. 15 seconds to detonate, and if the SB is blown up, the bomb doesn't go off. They are also far less of an area effect weapon than the proposal as I'm hearing it. Well, I've said my piece - wait, is that Veldspar over there? Woot! |

large scale AoE's are not good.
large scale AOE's that fire from off grid are even worse. Didn't you folks learn anything from titans?

If their damage is only enough to kill small ships, like frigates etc they are far from problematic.
Titans with LOCAL AOE are far worse because they are instant wipe

Look like there are plenty-more big gun enthusiasts out there. Have a read of this thread to see a different adaptation of a similarly based idea (thread includes ideas on deployable siege guns, suicide ships, production quality and anti-capital bombers)

Have you any idea how much lag a DDD causes and you want to have aoe guns in game that can fire multiple times that lag on the same grid?.

I would say that there are enough things that wipe frigates for them to be "far from problematic".
Its just less problematic until enough of them are produced to be dangerous to other types of ships.
Its bad game design

Nope, its a great game design if well done. Non thought stuff like titans are bad game designs. Titans were created like "hey guys I got an uber cool idea, a ship that can wipe all ships in the grid in 1 shot, let make it jsut uber expensive. -- Hey wow that is soo coool man! Imagine we can make it huuuge 20 km long." They were made just focused on the "looks a cool idea" factor. The arti support idea is SPECIALLY good is its fired from other systems, because would be the first thing in EVE history to promote real UNBLOBING, in sense that would promote separation of conflict on several systems.
THAT is an anti blob weapon. Titans are not anti blob because they do not promote enemies to separate their fleets (since they get no benefits from doing so).
Making art support inaccurate enough and simply introducing a limit on how many shells can be fired per minute in an area, not to even start on the time the shot takes to arrive are more than enough to control it. This is the stuff that would solve the boredom of cyno jammed system siege. Since you would not be able to keep your fleet hours camping a POS or gate or it would be wiped by art support.
Commanders would have to move their forces, separate them, keep all system under arti support range under control etc..
that is a lot of extra GOOD things for the game, more real strategy and less blobing.
But for this to work would need to be FROM ANOTHER system. If done in system it would add NOTHING to the gameplay (unless CCP manages to get a system divided among several nodes ).

Hey guys, guess what? With these new superguns we can camp a gate from 6 different systems! Or camp several different gates that our alt scouts are at!
This is a terrible, terrible idea.

Are you stupid or what? Arti support fire would take long time to arrive (like 30 second or more). If you try to use it to camp a gae entrance you will jsut waste your time.
On other hand this is the weapons you would use to break a very large gate camp. ------------------------------------------------- If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough

I dont see why this cannot be a pos fitting.
Mabe somthing like this could work Giant Launcher of some sort placed outside a pos shield you would need the ability to control pos weaponry to use it.
How it would work: Pilot flyisn up to pos managment tab in a cov ops frigate "helios..ect" thier ship would have fitted a uplink modual. Pilot clicks a little tab and links his ship to the gun. Pilot head to engagment or gate and sits of engagment at 100km. pilot decloaks ship targets desired cannon target hits uplink modual is frozen for 20 seconds and then recloaks and warps away. Weapon fires projectile has a travel time from launch to target.
Weapon woudl be an AOE weapon meaning whatever the projectile will hit it will create burst damage damage woudl be enough to kill a battleship weapon woudl be unable to shoot at anything on its own grid if target leaves grid before weapon reaches them gun loses target projectile goes dumb.
weapon could hold a small cache of ammo but not much and it woudl have a very very leaghty refire rate somthing like 10 minutes to reload AOE damage woudl be on par with a large smartbomb mabe slightly more.
while this idea will boost defending alliances ect. One coudl propose a mobile version aswell much like the one the poster suggested but rather then a anchorable structure either a capital ship coversion for dreanoughts where they can only fit one of said guns and would need to be in a seige mode of sorts with all the same rules as above or a towed weapon which coudl be towed by a carrier or some capital ship it would be able to be brought with them through cynos ect again with all the same rules aplying.

The MWD is an interesting idea, Insanly expensive? well it shouldn't be free, a balance, price to effectiveness. Whom you see using it and whom actually does use it might be 2 completly different players. . Dasfry, CEO Demios Corporation

* Maybe have the targetting based on a special module, that only a command ship's could use * I agree firing from another system seems ludicrous * I agree on the industrial role * The flight time is part of this weapon's intentionial drawback * I agree accuracy being measured in degrees deviation seems like a good idea .
