Very so, the next time you run the client the white background is back.

No. of EVE clients I usually run: 3 Resolution I usually use: 1024 x 768 (Both) Windowed/Fullscreen: Windowed (all 3) No. of monitors: 1
============================================= What Im usually using to reset "WHITEOUT" without changing EvE resolution etc.
1) Run DXDIAG program (Start - Run... - DxDiag) this is a standart part of DirectX package 2) Go to "Display" tab 3) Push button "Test Direct 3d" 4) Upon you see spinning cube - press ESC and cancel other tests
The graphics in all three clients resets, and WHITEOUT disappeared.
5) Repeat steps 3-4 in case of another WHITEOUT
This workaround works fine for me. But little annoying keep launched DXDIAG in taskbar while playing.

Another solution (was posted around already):
When the whiteout happens: a) Switch to the client with no whiteout. b) Switch to Fullscreen Mode and back there (ALT+Enter).
It resets the graphic so whiteout is gone for time being

Well not totally sure if its a fix. But so far havent had a whiteout in over two days when using multiple clients on the same comp. All i did was this; for one client i used the /end/LUA:OFF command in the shortcut thats it. Everything i read pointed to the cache by trying that i have cache normal on one client and cache in the old place before trinity on the other. Seems to work will update if i get error again, but so far no recreation of it no matter what i try.

Hi,
I get a combination of white screen / texture errors since patching last week. Though it seems sporadic. CPU/GPU temps are normal and no issues running other intensive games (Crysis/Oblivion). I did notice that after the texturing oddness occurs in EVE, and I can gracefully return to the desktop, Crysis/Oblivion failed to load properly. Though after rebooting, Crysis/Oblivion loaded as usual. So I sort of suspect something odd going on with video/texture memory.
In another instance of the texture oddness, I ran dxdiag.exe to try the dxdiag fix suggested earlier, but found it died (essentially nothing was visible on the screen and things just sort of hung) once it hit the DirectX 8.0 and DirectX 9.0 tests (the DirectX 7.0 test was fine). A reboot resolved this (reboot and then running the dxdiag tests).
I've run on the classic client and premium client, re-installed the client, re-installed DirectX 8.0/9.0c, re-installed the video drivers, and Windows is up to date. Still seem to have the odd texture mapping from time to time. Toggling the star-map or hitting Escape and then returning sometimes clears things up, but occasionally it just starts "layering" the textures (e.g., screen does not get wiped and restored and windows that have been exited remain on screen).
Occasionally, texture maps are displayed in the background instead of being mapped to a button/ship/etc (for example, on launching the character who is at a station, the texture map for the buttons appear as the background (white with the button images), or fonts on the buttons are skewed (larger than they should be) on some of the buttons. Station backgrounds sometimes look greyish (fog, perhaps). Launching out of the station basically keeps the background texture that had appeared incorrectly, so the star overlay isn't visible.
I've had one case when I had left the launch window open (logged out, just allowing the EVE graphic/poly to render on screen at the opening screen beginning) and I returned later to see the texture map for the poly on screen instead. Oddly enough the classic client did this once too, but I haven't seen that recently.
I'm not sure if it's related to the patch, but the texture oddness did seem to start last week. It could be coincidental.
Errors have been "reported to Microsoft". I'll start running logserver.exe regularly to see what I can be found as well.
My specs: Operating System: Windows XP Professional (all patches as of 2008/04/21 -- 5.1.2600 SP2 Build 2600). Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo E6850 @3.00GHz. Memory amount: 2046MB RAM (OCZ). DirectX version: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904). Graphics Card: OCZ NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTX 768MB. Graphics Driver: nv4_disp.dll (v6.14.0011.6921 [English], 05/12/2007).

I'm getting this problem pretty consistently now, though I can't tell if it's the 4th client or the patch. Either way it's a bit more than annoying and bordering on the game-breaking. Even with all 4 clients open I'm getting FPS in the 60s on the selected client with only 70% memory usage so I'm not sure how this can be a resource issue.

Has this been fixed now? Or, like me, has everyone who gets the whiteout problem generally given up playing eve and just occasionally logging on to change skills?

Sorry to hear you guys are having trouble - I don't have any white-out apart from a momentary flash of maybe 1-2 frames right after undocking. All textures etc display correctly from there on.
Eve, Premium Gfx OS: Windows XP SP2 CPU: AMD FX-57 2.8GHz Memory: 2GB DirectX version: 9.0C (latest rev) Graphics: nVidia 8800GTX
No. of EVE clients I usually run: 2 Resolution I usually use: 1280 x 1024 (all 2) Windowed/Fullscreen: Fullscreen (all 2) No. of monitors: 1
I run Premium graphics, extreme cache on both clients, fullscreen at 1280x1024 HDR + driver-forced 8x FSAA with 16xAF. Looks great and I only get the one flash of white - usually connecting one portion of my ship to the station if its visible.
I have a second PC at work, also running fine.
Even if CCP's graphics code is spotless, nVidia's and ATI's graphics drivers may need to be checked by their respective companies in order to fix the problem, ie the problem may not lie with CCP.
Peace, hope its fixed soon. ----- VPN-Firewall Guide

An update from CCP would be greatly appreciated.

Agree with you there Splash, in so far that the clients don't seem to 'fight' (flickering 2nd clients - locking up)over the graphic resources, but the whiteout may still occur later in the session. I haven't run 2 or more clients simultaneously for a couple of weeks now, however, judging by it still being listed in 'Known Issues' I guess the design team haven't found the source(s) of this problem.
I'll say again, this only started after the March patch. Having played eve for over 4 years with about 2&1/2 having more than 1 account this never occurred. The nearest was a white flash that appeared during every gate jump or on the map, if I remember correctly. That came after a patch once. CCP fixed it quite soon afterwards.

Locking/Unlocking windows account ("Win" button + "L" in Windows XP) removes whiteouts in all open EvE clients
It seems to be fastest way to get rid of whiteout. But still dodgy :(

Edited by: ari III on 05/05/2008 00:39:48 New trick I"ve been using and has been workimg is to log all three clients on to the character selection page before selecting a char to enter the game. This has prevented whiteout which I was always getting on the third client when I entered the game with two others first. I tried some of the other tricks but they worked for only one run, next time I tried to run three whiteout on the third until I tried this new method of entering the game. I have had a severe lag from time to time but no whiteout so far. I'll edit down the road if whiteout returns.
PS I can always run two clients without problems, always. Whiteout is on the third and as mentioned before it showed up immediately after a patch earlier this year. |

Finally an clarifying answer from CCP.
Originally by: CCP Sputnik rules to run multiple eve clients: * every client needs its one installation/copy of the eve folder * deactivate the sound in the clients (its possible to run one client with sound but not more than one) * run in window mode (if your pc is getting slow minimize the windows for a short while - 1 or 2 seconds - this will reset the memory and cleans up all the stuff trinity is loading into the ram to make the game faster) * best combination is 1 premium 1 classic client, but 2 premium should work too with enough RAM
and the last point
* dont blame CCP if anything is going wrong, we only support one client per machine (I run multiple clients all the time, but official support is something totally different.)

Oh so I guess all those "two for one account"-deals were expressly meant only for people with two computers? Funny, I don't recall it being mentioned in the offer.
That's a bullcrap copout if I ever saw one, and it also opens a whole can of worms labeled "false advertising", since giving discounts for multiple accounts strongly implies support for the same.

That has to be one of the most appuling stments to come from ccp for a long time, there must be about 70% of players have 2 accounts and like to use them at the same time and no where have they said anything like this before to warn us of this problem.

I see this has/had slipped to page 8 - but I still have the problem. A whiteout still randomly occurs on any running client. It's still listed on the 'known Issues' page:
"Technical Issues
* Some computer configurations show the background nebula as white if more than one client is used"
I wonder what, if any, progress has been made on this?

Someone earlier asked if there was anyone running only 1 client and still having the whiteout problem. Well, here I am. I only have one char, just got back into EVE today, and experienced the whiteout problem for the first time. Strangely, it only really seems to happen if the station is visible on screen. It doesn't happen when docked at all. I really hope someone fixes this.

Edited by: Bluebeard on 04/06/2008 19:53:52 I used to get this problem and solved it in the following way.
1) Use the classic client 2) Use a seperate directory for each Eve client 3) Login the first client and once you're ingame, press 'escape' to bring up the options screen. press 'escape' again or click the close window button. 4) Repeat step 3 for each additional client.
I have a script to start each client
----- set USERPROFILE=C:\games\Eve3 start "Eve3" "C:\games\Eve3\eve.exe" /END /LUA:OFF -----
The interesting part, is if you start up 2 clients, let them run for 30 mins or so (without using the option screen trick above) and then examine the memory used in the task manager. *Then* go into the options screen on the clients and watch the memory used drop like a stone. I seriously suspect there is a memory leak there and entering the options screen, somehow frees it.
My system: AMD x2 4400 4 gig RAM 1 gig 7950 GX2 Windows XP Pro
I happily run 4 clients at once at 1,600 x 1,136 resolution and 5 at a push.
Hope this helps,
Blue

Twin Intel Core 2 Quad 8GB RAM Twin ATI Radeon HD 3900 Crossfire
Eve Classic, used to be able to run 6 clients without hiccup (pre-Trinity).
Now trying to run more than one client per graphics card causes a massive drop in FPS the game window 'flickers' Eventually the entire system hangs, sometimes with the screen still visible but unusable, sometimes I get a GPF and forced restart.
Latest drivers for everything are installed.
