Quote: Appearently it only affects users that have winXP and haven't allowed the system to upgrade to SP2. end quotet response:
If this is the case then I recon alot of the poor victims have either ignored the M$ instructions to keep your system up to date (with the free automatic windows updates) or have a piracy copy of windows (and then I don't feel sad for them). But then again there's probably a few who's run old versions of windows on machines powerful enough to use the "premium content" (but those should be minimal in nr).
And stop comparing software blame/flame with IRL manufacturing and such.
ps: and I hope all you loudmouths who screams for someone to get fired gets fired yourselves "permanently".
Although this guy is a complete idiot, he does have a point. If you don't own an XP boot disc of any kind, floppy/CD/DVD/factory restore/etc, then you have most likely pirated your XP. In other words, you fail, and are the reason Bill Gates makes me call India at 3am to reinstall XP for the 20th time on my poor old backup PC.

Good. I am speaking for all of those who don't have a working computer, because most of those just play games and don't know how to do things like this. I don't know computers well enough to figure this out without this post. Right now, there are many gamers ****ed off because they don't have working computers, and once they find this out, it will get worse.
The **** you are. You're not speaking for me at all, and my computer, as of right now, isn't working. But you know what? I'm going to go home and FIX my computer, and the problem will be solved.

Can't people keep all that "omg CCP should be firedsz!" crap out of this thread, where people are asking for help and getting help from the community? Yes it sucks that our comps are borked, but whining here won't fix that. We can whine later.
I'm in doubt whether I dare actually reboot my computer using the option "Last time it worked", since I am not sure how long time it will roll back my computer? Anyone have any idea if this will even help, or when it saves settings?

Yes, it only rolls back drivers and some software installation. Your files and settings should remain unaffected.

I had eve on my d:\ not my boot drive and it still broke, It also flipped my drives around c: = d: and d:=c: now and
I will be able to get my data off but will take all night to rebuild and re-install everything.
But having it on non-boot drive does not make you immune

Hi, If you have the "Total Commander" software for files manager, you will have more easy for to create the deleted file in few seconds without to go in some hardier dos commands under "execute" who take several minutes...
Here the link for this shareware: http://www.ghisler.com/ I buied it since 10 years ago and impossible to unuse it: more easy than the windows explorer or other windows stuffs... Enjoy it.

see this article for instructions on how to recreate the boot.ini file via the recovery console from your windows xp cd.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/330184/en-us
this will recreate the file without having to try to figure it out youself
if you can can not boot from an XP cd, get a set of boot floppies made from a good installation of xp somewhere, then you can use a usb floppy to get a recovery console to repair your installation, but you will need access to a machine that has a working copy of xp installed on it
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824632/en-us
my laptop did not have the boot.ini file anywhere on it except my eve directory and it rebooted fine today, my home machine craped out on me when i woke up this morning, i was in the process of moving all the data off it when someone at work pointed out an article on slashdot about this...
considering i just bought an xps 720 that won't work and i'm sending back to dell, waking up to my regular machine all of a sudden flaked out was almost enough for me to just jump out the window this morning :P

Quote: What the ****?! I never received this message, and after turning my computer on, I found I was totally screwed! I had to get into and restore it to factory defaults! What the HELL CCP?! Who is going to reimburse me for all that lost info? I just barely bought a full account yesterday and THIS is how I am greeted! Hell I am thinking twice about installing again because the idiots over there don't know what the **** they are doing.
Listen, I get moved by the military and all my extra stuff, games, music, movies, projects, etc. were on the computer because my boxes of stuff aren't able to be with me... so now what the hell do I do? What the hell do I do about MS Office? My photoshop license? What the hell?! I'm so freaking ****ed off right now I can't see straight.
Well the first thing you should have done is realized that the boot.ini is a simple text file that just tells DOS where to find your copy of Windows. This text file is about 2 sentences long, and can be fixed by any novice in about 2 minutes if told what to do, unless they have a kneejerk reaction, and destroy their PC, like you did.

Thx CCP, very professional of you. Oh maybe you got too much money with subscriptions and dont care anymore about basics? The best update to date, blah, blah. Maybe you should pay competent people instead of throwing money at producing stupid propaganda videos to try tell the world how unbeleivable the new extension was going to be...
Anyways...
When i put the XP CD in my machine to restore, it cant repair because it says it doesnt see any hardrives. Great. I guess it's something to do with the way Dell machine is setup. Anyone has the same problem and know a work around ?
If i have to call Dell, and lose hours of work until my machine is up and running, who do i send the bill to ?

CCP don't need to fire anyone, just make sure it never happen again. One though could be to let 10 people not working for CCP try out the patch before deploying it to the rest of the world.
But it really should have been found in their QA department.

I lost 2 hours last night trying to fix this problem, but it was becuase I didn't remember my admin password since I hadn't entered in over 8 months and had moved during that timewhicih lead to me losing it in the first place. Just use one of the following methods below that I took directly from microsoft.com
Method 1 Edit the Boot.ini file to restore or correct the Default entry and to ensure that the other entries in the [Operating Systems] section of the Boot.ini file point to the appropriate directories.
Method 2 Use the Bootcfg utility in the Recovery Console to correct the Boot.ini file: 1. Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to start your computer. 2. When you receive the message to press R to repair Windows by using the Recovery Console, press the R key. 3. Select the Windows installation that you want, and then type the administrator password when prompted. 4. Type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER. 5. When the Windows installation is located, the following instructions are displayed: Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All) [Type Y in response to this message.]
Enter Load Identifier: [This is the name of the operating system. Type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition.]
Enter OS Load options: [Leave this field blank, and then press ENTER]. After you perform the preceding steps, restart the computer, and then select the first item on the boot menu. This should allow Windows XP to start normally.
After Windows XP has successfully loaded, the Boot.ini can be modified to remove the incorrect entry.
Method 3 1. Start the computer by using your Windows XP CD-ROM. Press any key to boot from the CD. 2. After the setup files are finished loading press R to repair using Recovery Console. 3. When you are in the recovery console, select the installation to log on to (usually number 1), and then press ENTER. 4. Login to the Administrator account by typing the password for this account, and then press ENTER. 5. At the recovery console command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
For Uni-Processor systems: expand cd-rom:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ drive:\Windows\system32 For Multi-Processor systems: expand cd-rom:\i386\ntkrnlmp.ex_ drive:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Cd-rom is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive, and drive is the drive letter of the hard disk on which windows is installed. 6. If you receive a prompt to overwrite the file, press Y. 7. Type exit, and press ENTER at the command prompt.
Method 4 Start the computer by using the Recovery Console, and then run theCHKDSK /rcommand.
Note You do not have to include the /p switch in the Chkdsk command-line because the /r switch causes the Chkdsk utility to locate bad sectors and recover readable information. This command implies the /p switch..

Well, technically the patch is a virus. It maliciously deletes your vital system files in an attempt to prevent your computer from booting.

If there are still doubts then I'll wait until the weekend before installing the update.
While the bug is clearly a huge blunder, I have a lot of sympathy for whoever wrote that instruction. It is just as easy to accidentally delete a crucial system file as it is to delete some other random file, so my main complaint is not against CCP but against MS. It should simply not be possible to delete such crucial files, even as an Administrator. Maybe there should something above Administrator, so that we can install software with the whole OS being at risk.

Also why is this such a big deal , you can repair the boot.ini of any windows disk. dunno why people are banging on about new harddrives and reinstalls , just do a repair of the disk and if you dont have a disk borrow one off some one. ive killed boot.ini a couple of times just messing with my pc, you restore it and everything works the same way id did, no reinstall no new hardware no nothing.
Believe me, mine is f****d, tech support has confirmed it. And right now I am too.

Umm, and what about all those system that use restore partitions?
Yeah, forgot about them eh.
Most preinstalled systems do not come with a disk but use restore partitions. Many have restore with backup options but trust me that that is less than perfect. So get with the current trends and stop trying to label people when you have no idea what youÆre talking about or about each and every person's particular situation.
Peace.
if this is the case , you should be able to get to the restore way before windows loads up, usually using a F- key . if they relied on windows they would be totally useless
