Yea, folks, can we please stop with the CCP sux, and I'm going to sue discussions? Take it to another thread or something. Leave this channel for open discussion on how to fix the problem, especially for those of us not technically minded.
I downloaded the 24 meg patch last night, but could not use the approx. 600 meg file since I have a crappy video card. I logged off, shut my machine down and went to sleep. This morning everything cranked up just fine, however it does appear that my boot.ini is gone. Can someone provide a good working list on how to get this file? Can I really just copy one from another machine in the house thats running XP too?

The ONLY interesting question, right now, is why the boot.ini was buggered at all?! By default it is supposed to be protected. Read-only or something at the first place. Am I right?
And that "hall.dll" file which some ppl said they lost and now is missing. I think proper answer is required.

Yup...I'm so happy I got Vista with my new PC a few months ago.... :D On another note...as someone said earlier...its none of our business who gets fired or whatever at CCP for this...who cares....Dont you think they are already probably running around their offices screaming their heads of and pulling their hair out? This is the biggest expansion EVE has ever seen and its been blundered by this error....I'm sure they are absolutely hating themselves right now and feel like ****...so yeah...leave em alone for a minute and take your *****ing somewhere else.
This game owns, the graphics own, I love it and am gonna keep playing it. Thanks CCP for all your hardwork!

I created a boot.ini file out of that one, removed all partition lines save for the first. Rebooted and it worked without any major problems. After that I edited the file so that the timeout was set to 1 instead of 30, and things have been running fine since. ------

Originally by: Slayter Gatlin Deleting a boot.ini really is not that big of a problem. Sadly though there will be people that don't have knowledge of computer and will sadly go and spend money to get it fixed. Althought I can't see them paying anything more then 10 or 20 bucks labor as a problem like this would only take 10 mins to fix. In any case, my take on this occurence is simple:
This was a honest mistake made by CCP. I feel bad for CCP more then anyone else, I think alot of people here are blowing this whole thing out of proportion. Do I think CCP should find some way to reimburse its loyal and grateful players? Sure, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Would I expect them to? No. Programming is a very tedious and concrete practice. I've been in many programming classes and have learned that programming is certainly not for everybody. I can't tell you how many times I would write a program and if one punciation was off, one capital letter was off out of 3000 lines of code, the entire program wouldn't compile. Never the less, I do find it hard to believe that a programming flaw such as this would slip past QA. But thats beside the point, mistake do happen, and all it would take is the slightest overlook for it to slip past. From the posts of read on this thread, it sounds like CCP could seriously have dug themselves a gole as alot of people here seem very very unhappy. I for one am not at all unhappy, this kind of problem does not effect me like it does the many others. It was a simple problem for me to fix and I look forward to many more months and years of EVE enjoyment.
I disagree with you, not because I think mistakes are impossible to make but because this is merely highlighting a big malpractice on the part of CCP, and that is not because of the typo, the malpractice here is to call a game file with the same name as such an important system file. THAT is where the malpractice lies.
Imagine you use a chainsaw to slice bread. You have been using it for ages and as you are very careful you have never hurt anyone. Now imagine you are slicing bread with it and a noise startles you and your arm involuntarily moves causing you to cut your wife's head with the bread-slicing chainsaw. The fault is not in the noise that startled you, or in being startled by the noise, or the involuntary arm motion, the fault lies in using a chainsaw to slice bread.
Substitute "the chainsaw" by "calling a game file like a system file" and "the noise" by "the typo".
PS: You will still go to jail for decapitating your wife.

Upgrading to premium definitely removed my boot.ini file, but my computer started up fine this morning. I have created a new file and copy/pasted the sample boot.ini into it.
My question is this: why would my computer have started normally? I am grateful for small blessings, but it just has me worried that, with my new boot.ini in place, my computer will not start the next time.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

BOY DID CCP BUGGER THIS UP!
I had to reformat and reinstall Windows - I "repaired" the boot.ini before rebooting, and had a m"missing hal.dll" afterwads, AND it scrambled my admin password (deleted more files, prolly) so no repair was possible
I'll be at least a week, probably MONTHS restoring my PC.

My boot.ini is read-only. Unless you messed with it, it is that by default (I just reinstalled and updated XP x64 a few days ago). Did the bug somehow get around that read-only-ness? Or is it just people who have mucked with the file that turned off the read-only-ness? |

Why on earth does the eve-online hdr graphics pack installer tamper with a component of windows' bootloader?
Have the wonderful people of CCP been hacked again?
Personally i'd like GM/DEV confirmation of why this happened, but if they decide to say "No Comment" it'll be accepted as the answer.
Pfft you worry too much...
Eve uses a text file named boot.ini as well completly unrelated to the boot.ini of WinXp, their installer basicly deleted it from your root instead from the Eve root. This would not have been an issue werent it for the fact that in that location there exists a boot.ini which tells your puter where your windows installation is located on your disk(s). -----------------------------------------------

Originally by: Apertotes tbh, boot.ini was overpowered and needed a nerf
I have to say that I was hit with this before it was made public and thought it was my hard drive dying a slow death. To cut it short, I reinstalled Windows and was up all night. Yeah, I'm mad that it turned out to be EVE's fault and was probably easier to fix than a reinstallation, but I find the humor like this to be in good taste. Helps me feel better about my late night reinstalling Windoze. :P

Edited by: ICE Blade on 06/12/2007 16:16:17 Well I have updated windows xp pro, my boot.ini was missing.
However I download the premium update about 23:30 5th Dec, and changed my skills and turned my Pc off and went to bed. My PC was working fine in the morning, I replaced the boot.ini that was missing my PC is still working fine.
Whats the problem? Fail to see. I guess you guys thought the boot.ini in root of c was the same as that of eve. Well the devs should know its bad practice to name game files after systems files. Should have learned that in 101 Programming basics under the section filename naming conventions. I guess you just missed the path off in the installer and it defaulted to c:\ and affected the windows version.
Fine wine is not to be rushed but well done very nice update. |

Just so we are all sleeping a little better I would like to know. Cause if I have learned one thing about using windows is that "there is always an exception to the rule" and it's usually for the worst.
The reason for Vista not beeing affected is that Vista uses a new system for boot selection (bcd). There is no boot.ini on Vista to delete.

Originally by: Meridius Dex OK, I got through the first 9 pages and couldn't take any more. If someone could just clarify this issue --
The boot.ini file recommended for replacement here contains:
Quote: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect
But after checking my boot.ini.backup file in c:\windows\pss, I find it contains the following:
Quote: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(5)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(5)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(2)partition(5)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect
So what should I do? If I copy and paste everything over from the backup file, should I run msconfig again? And if so, should I reply 'No' every time it asks about the differing entries? How important is it to have the separate entries for the various partitions?
If you have a backup file, then copy the backup file itself, and rename it. The backup file in nearly all cases will be the same as what your old boot.ini was. A backup file will be superior to the recommended replacement. Running msconfig and allowing it to remove entries it doesn't like is fine as well.

Get some professional help if the lost data is worth it. Shut down your computer and leave it off until you get help. There is a good chance a lot of your data is still perfectly recoverable (if its worth it, you will have to pay some working hours at least)!
Even formatted drive does not loose data unless its overwritten several times.

Rarely have I seen a better case of "it won't happen to me" syndrome. Well it did, and you didn't plan for it one bit, and now you pay the conseqences. Yes CCP have made a monumental screw up, but not as big as yours by failing to make any backups at all of your vital work.
No only did you fail to do any backups at all, you could fix the simple problem in the 2 minutes it took you to come to the forums and write your crybaby post. You could have befallen a power cut, hard disk failure, virus, spyware infection, and you failed to plan whatsoever for all of them. You reap what you sow.
I'm sorry, but you have to be ******* ******** to blame anyone for this disaster other then ccp.Unfortunatly no everyone is a computer expert and may not know that you need to back up your file every 5 ******* minutes. How can you say he deserves to fail? Why? Because CCP decided to unleash a virus on his computer?
More then likely he can recover the data, but it will cost him, and I think that CCP is going to find itself with a few hundred lawyers on it's doorstep in the coming days.
