Just curious. Ooh and 256 Gig, that is pretty damn small, they don't make lareger versions? 1 Terrabyte +. I would think with the amount of data that EVE generates on a second by second basis, that you would need a larger amount of active, fast data shuffling going on at one given time. Or to compensate for spikes in data traffic etc.
Anyway, I have no clue what I am talking about, lol.
.....step back and look at it from a database standpoint. To you, a home user who downloads bittorrent videos and ****o and illegal music and videogames, 256GB isnt alot. But 256GB is ALOT of dedicated database storage to just be 'added' on. It can hold an assload od non-media, non-program data. Its a database :)

Seems appropriate. hehe

Each database software has its strong points and drawbacks. It really depends on what you want to do with the database. The lag with the database recently I would guess is more related to hardware then software though I'm sure the software upgrade will help.
As for the ransam. Those are expensive and you don't need very much to make a huge performance difference for a database. They are upgrading to 256GB, meaning they probably are already running at least one unit. Probably a 128GB or two 64GB units.
256GB might not seem like much but for a database 256GB is a crap load of data.

I would have thought that testing any new equipment BEFORE even announcing the upgrade would have been more sensible. Then if things get delayed, by whatever reason, people don't get annoyed. I have no 'magical' insider knowledge like a lot of you guys above... but hope/expect this to make a very welcome upgrade. It is just annoying that I have been delaying skills i really wanted for the last few days due to these delays. Here's hoping CCP don't get any more delays and can get on with this. Well done guys.

You know, change the date to like 1st of september. If that stuff didn't pass customs till then, you have serious issues with your customs and you can cancel these upgrades alltogether or delay it without announcing a new date...

It's Samsung disks, as IBM sold their disk production a few years back to them.

Originally by: CCP kieron On Tuesday, 31 July, Tranquility will experience an extended downtime period from 0400 through 1200 GMT. During this time, we will upgrade some of our software from SQL Server 2005 to Enterprise SP2. At the same time, we will replace all of our SQL hardware.
I have a better suggestion. Ditch the Windows crap, go to UNIX and run Oracle. Better performance and better scalability.
Company i work for (retail software, among other products) uses unix/oracle servers and has some companies on windows/mssql and i can tell you that the biggest problems we're having are with the oracle platform. We have encountered problems that oracle never even saw befor (we're working closely with oracle to solve them at the moment). Anyway, Oracle would probably die when you have 30k different computers connecting at the same time, it died when 1500 of our customers pc's tried to. By the way: i am not saying mssql is better, it has issues aswell but oracle isn't without errors either.

Also: There ARE two kindS of people, the ones WHO do not give a damn, and the ones WHO think they do.

And I welcome any soft/hardware upgrade that gets rid of lagtime .

I have to pity the customs situation. One of my former team members once worked for UK customs and I thought this would mean he was hard working, eagle eyed and would have an attention to detail.
All of which proved to be false which is why he no longer works for me. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ -[sig]- ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Not sure how you get that number they gross closer to .8 to 1.4 million from the London based server. And gross is not even close to net profits and net is the real profit margin.
