Is there really any sensible and viable reason why there are three character slots per account?
EVE is not like other MMORPGs. It takes a lot of time to achieve anything and since you cannot train two or three characters on the same account at once, everyone sticks to their "main". This leaves two slots per account that are available for creation of "alts". Now, I'll try to list all the possible uses of alts and try to find at least one that's really useful. Let's assume a player only has one account.
1. Scouting. This is horribly difficult if we assume you only have one account, however, if you frequently use a certain route through 0.0 or low sec, be it for mission running, trading, empire-to-0.0-and-back trips, you usually have a choice of two routes due to "choke point" systems, which means you can put two alts into those choke points and always know if there is a camp there or not.
Although this might be very useful, isnt this almost like a small exploit? Or at least a not-very-fair advantage? I guess ideally, in a MMO Game, you should team up with fellow players for pretty much anything. In this case you either team up with another character who will play the role of a scout and get to your destination safely or take your chances on your own and either live or die.
2. A hauler/salvager for loot from missions/ratting. This is also a bit difficult or rather very time consuming, as you have to get a bookmark, presumably drop it in a container at a planet, then relog with your alt and pick up the bm and only then can you reach the mission, where you you will have to fly to each wreck manually, because you cannot tractor beam what's not yours. For ratters, the process isnt so hard, but it is still pretty time consuming.
Personally, I doubt many people do this. It's even easier to just train your main to haul/salvage. For ratters, however, this might be the only choice. Sometimes. However, again, shouldnt you team up with other players? Since this is a MMO Game... Or at least do everything yourself.
3. High sec ganking. With the introduction of 1mil SP starting characters, it has become possible to get enough newly created characters to gank someone in high-sec with no cost, or at least very little compared to the possible gain. It is very quick and does not bear any punishment in any form, i.e. sec status or reputation. This is an exploit.
4. Corporation CEO. I guess an alt could be used simply as a CEO of corporation. I do not see the reasons behind this, but I have seen people doing this. So I guess there must be a reason. Personally, I think it wont be a big deal if people will have to list the name of the person who is really in charge in the Corporation Description.
5. Forum posting. Again, personally I dont see any reason for this whatsoever. The fact that people have the ability to post and not be identified just makes flaming and etc. more tempting, because there is no fear of losing reputation with the community or even ban. (I dont know if it is a particular character that gets banned or the account, so can someone please enlighten me?)
Overall, to be honest, I cant see any reason why we should be allowed to creat two extra characters. I feel it only leads to a loss of immersion and realism (I know this is a game, but still...) and encourages people to do all sorts of other, completely unhelpful crap... If people really need a second character to do something for them, then they probably have a second account, which is pretty fair, as that character has it's own skills and purpose and if you dont know that he is someones "alt", you can think he is an individual player. At least it does not break the immersion and realism too much.
Personally, I think there should only be one character per account.
What are your thoughts on this? What uses do you have for your "alts"? (Remember, I'm talking about "alts" as in other character slots on the same account!

Another reason is that you can create two different characters with vastly different attributes and therefore flip-flop training on different skills for better results if you want to have -- say: one combat character, and one industrial character.

I have my main account with one main character I train and play on, I do have 2 other characters though sat in various regions if I need a price check and one of those is making this post . On my other account I have
- Industrial Alt - Cyno Alt - Scout
The majority of the training is done on the Industrial Alt while the scout just uses a shuttle or MWD'ing t1 frig and the cyno alt can use an Osprey with Cyno.

I guess you could do this, but does anyone really do it? By training your alt you lose time with your main. I dont think attributes matter THAT much, unless you have a totally gimped character. You would also have to spend 1-2 months on each of the characters to just train the learning skills, because otherwise your main would probably be better in all attributes compared to any newly created character.

Also another reason he's in charge of my corp, but that's hushus

However, this is not a viable reason.

Pricechecks and/our camp certain spots in pipes, as others said.
But there's simply no reason to train several characters on the same account when you could as well train it all on one character, as someone said - the attributes won't affect that much if you will be spending time training learning on both anyway. Training learning on one (and using implants on it) should balance it up.
The only reason is to have a character in a location where you want to check something. That's it.

However, do you all not think that such price-checking alts are also a bit of an exploit? It kind of ruins the trading system a little bit, dont you think? I know it would be really hard to play a trader character without these price-checking alts, but still... If you are a serious trader, at least in theory, you should be a member of a trading corp, which would have a network of price-checkers. Although it is completely unrealistic that someone would sit in a station all day and stare at market prices. Plus you would have to share profit with them... But there must be a reason why CCP wont allow us to just choose the region we want in the market window just like that...

TImeline is as follows:
Sheriff Jones creates a corporation. Another person joins this "massive" corporation. We do stuff in our lil own business. We both move to another corporation to explore the galaxy,to boldly go where either of has never gone(0.0 space). It was an offer we couldn't refuse. Doctor Jones takes over corporation to hold it until such time will/might occur that Sheriff Jones decides to assume power and begin galactic domination!

Just let all 3 train without being affected by the others training timers.
This game is old enough to not having balancing issues from that, to be honest. And most of us run several accounts anyway.. for me, that'd just give me even more option for small and fast-paced pvp (perhaps pirating) rather than using my "two mains" for it. The other 2+2 characters will never catch up or be even near the skillpoints of the current ones.
This would also solve balancing PvE/PvP issues between races. So you're pure Amarr/Minmatar and struggle in PvE? Make a Caldari/Gallente alt for PvE. They won't need much sp to be viable. So you're pure Caldaria and run missions, perhaps build your own stuff, but want more PvE viability? Make a Gallente on the same account, specialize in cruiser sized ships and drones and have some fun popping hundreds of ships.

I'd love to have even MORE character slots per account, and I'd fill them up very quick, with various industrial + trader + R&D alts.
I think most people have more than one character created, that they use for (whatever) something useful. Especially if you are a scientist (limited number of lab slots per char), or a trader (different chars in different systems, each with their own limited number of buy/sell orders) then it is VERY useful.
Anyway, its not like its would be possible for CCP to change (reduce) the amount of characters per account without a mass exodus of quitting players, no matter how much the OP would like it.

Let say you have a main and it spends its entire life in 0.0.
But ocassionly you want to go mine or do some missions or just generally do something else not affiliated with your current life in 0.0
Now one character per account means you have to get a whole other account to do that. But if you have 3 per account it means you can create that secondary to do something else.
Yes you are taking time away from another character to train but that is a choice you make. And for some after several years they could care less about a few months of training someone else.
The bottom line what is the BENEFIT to the community to removing those 2 slots ? And what will be the COST for removing them. What will people lose. That is the bottom line as it is already in the game and everyone is used to them. So it comes down to why should they be removed not why should they stay.

-5 and lower tend to have a hauler alt and/or a player with the same spaceship command skills so that they can buy stuff in empire and bring them to lowsec. Not sure how many have a separate account for this. I'm below -5 myself, but I don't nearly ever need to visit empire.
Corporation CEOs are even more viable now, because of the wonderful 800k SP starting. My CEO alt has Corporation Management 5 among other corporation skills that allow me to have a large amount of people in my corporation. (She's not currently in use...)
My other slot is my scout, who will scout for my other accounts/characters in a shuttle. He has a funny name. :)

It has to be said the original question might have some validity from a historical point of view of why cpp done things like that, but from a pratical point of view nothing can be changed now, because it would involve one of the following two scenarios and responces
1) CPP announce that in a weeks time 2 of the characters on each account will be deleted, pick which one you want to keep. Result: Whine fest from all the players with existing alts, cpp reverse the decision.
2) CPP announce that new players only get one slot, existing alts are retained. Result: Whine fest from all the players without existing alts, cpp reverse the decision.
See the trend

There is a point to having multiple chars on same account because you can optomize attributes for roles.
E.g. training an indy char and a combat char will take less overall time than training a single char in both roles.

I've done that. I find you can have multiple characters that are worthwhile; though only one per account be truly "great." Like my miner, after I got to to Exhumers IV, there wasn't much point in training up the mining character. He's very skewed, ability wise, to mining/industrial So I made an alt to trade. She's better at trading, as an alt, than he is due to character creation choices. And once you've gotten the Caldari mission runner to where she can watch TV while cruising through Level IV's, then it's time to split training time with the Minmater PvP/Ratter specialist...
Now, if I had my way, I'd be able to TRAIN all three. But I don't get my way. Still, I can make a couple of viable specialized-characters per account. Phoenix Logistics Industries |

What he said!
If you manufacture items/copy or sell BPO/BPCs, then you set your alts up to have high research skills. This enables you to run up to 18 research slots running concurrently with no effort as opposed to a maximum of six using just the main. (This assumes you don't want to pay a *lot* more for the book that enables a character to run even more slots.)
Another use of alts is that the hauler/trader/buyer alt enables certain pirates to pretend that they never, ever, carebear while hypocritically condemming all others for ever daring to do so. (I don't think I've ever known a pirate so hardcore that that he lives *only* on what he gets from his kills! ..or that it's even doable without 'carebearing')

To the OP, when EVE went gold the reasion for multiple alts was that the cost of clones, It took months to get just to 1 mil sps and the cost of the clone was as much as cruser (which it also took months to earn the isk) so by seperating the points by creating a fighter, a mfg, a miner you divded the cost by 3.
Of course now days clones are cheep, that was not always the case.

I haven't read all the replies but here is my reason:
I have two accounts. The first has my main. The second has my hauler, my pirate and my scout. Once my pirate has enough skill (yeah right) and if I ever decide I don't want to pay for two accounts anymore (i.e. if mining is nerfed more) I might transfer my hauler and the pirate to my first account. So I can carebear, pirate and steal ore (with the hauler) all on one account. --

1) Science Alt do do lots of research [RPM 4 is quicker to get on an alt than RPM5 on the main], and I find that I run out of reseach slots too fast. 2) production Alt - Advanced Mass Production is very useful for a builder 3) hauler Alt - 4) cyno Alt - 5) sales alts - Of cause the can be all on the main but if you have the relevent skills at 5 already there is nowhere to go, so train the alt.

Like my miner, after I got to to Exhumers IV, there wasn't much point in training up the mining character.
Uhm youforget to take into account learning skills. To max them out (all learning to level 5 and all advancted to 4) takes around a month. Now if you're willing to do this on every single character go for it. However its not very efficient. Also you're forgetting about implants. If you're rich enough you might be able to get a set of +4s for one character. But the rest of the characters on that account will suffer because of the lack of implants and we'll be training "less efficiently" as your main.
I usually just give my alts a day of training time/maybe less. And provide full training for my 2 mains. ----------------------------------------------

Actually, I'd *love* to see us all be reduced to one character per account. It'd make for a better game for all of us.
I never could figure why CCP came up with the concept of a character's security status and then went on to undermine it by allowing people to freely sidestep it all the time by using alts.
I know I'd think twice before I podded a given asshat under those circumstances...

As has been implied there is little point to the extra slots on your main account since most of us want to maximize the potential of our main (though industrial and combat stat characters works well for some it seems) however on your second account it allows you to train up multiple low sp chars for various functions, science, industry, trade, etc and of course the added benefit of having 2-3 cyno chars to jump to allowing you to make multiple jump trips solo a lot quicker than usual in a cap ship.

Heres the set up ive got. Basically on primary account i sacrificed 2 weeks of training to build up some additional manufacturers for the extra slots. Second account is purely an "alt" alt account, and as with my primary, the researchers will probably be pushed into manufacturing or something for yet more build slots at some point.
account 1: Primary char. Scout/Price check/manufacturer. Scout/Price check/manufacturer.
account 2: Hauler/miner. Research alt. Research alt.

Originally, you could train on all three characters at the same time. That was when they were useful, and you could indeed have true 'alternate characters' instead of throw-aways.
Now they are used purely for meta-gaming, and nothing else. I don't like meta-gaming at all, but if someone pays for another account to do that, fair enough on them. Providing everyone with free meta-gaming.
I have never seen a game so prevalent in meta-gaming as Eve, and it makes me sad.
Meta-gaming ftl, tbh.

I have only one account with one character. Its a minmatar sebiestor so the attributes are very balanced. When setting out the points I made them as close to each other as I could, except charisma.
Now Ive trained all learning skills to lvl 5 and the advanced ones to lvl 4.
I think that with those skills I can train both industrial and combat quicker than having two characters (each with specialized attributes but no learning skills) training separate skill trees.
And then we have the issue that I like to emerge myself in the game us much as I can. "Omg, were under attack? Wait, ill just switch to my combat character" dont like.
As far as I am concerned, they can limit us to one character per account.

The OP is right, there is not much reason to have alt characters on our accounts. It is far better to create a whole new alt accounts.
Yeah, alt accounts >> alt characters.

The whole of Eve is designed around needing more than 1 character, 15 euro's a month is not the real price for Eve because if you really want to compete and do things efficiently, you need another account. To remove alts from 1 account would make this even more true.

My account has all 3 slots filled, 1mil sp hauler/trade char, 3mil sp science char and a pvp char who is pretty much the main focus of the account.
I cannot afford to run multiple accounts anymore so I have to retire/sell my chars on other accounts.
EDIT: Just to clarify I am not transfering other chars to this account - all 3 chars are sharing skill time. It's really not that big of a deal considering if I only had 1 char I would be training those skills anyway.

my main is training for combat and can only sell 4 or 5 items at a time. My alts with 0 training post character creation are industrialist and can sell 15 items at a time.
So I give them all the small stuff that may or might not sell, put a reasonable market price and just let it go. Check back every 4 or 5 days and repeat.

a good use for an alt chars is this. Take one alt char with noob skills and a noo ship. put this into a staion near or if possible in the same system as a perpetual gate camp. Make it that the noob char respawns each time after podding to a station in or near the said gate camp. Then spend lots of happy hours running this char to the gate camp let him die each time. If possible get others to join you and make a fleet of noob ships all pestering the gate campers resuling in gate campers get bored and go away. Total cost of doing this is ZERO ISK Works for me .

Account #1:
Main char (Ben), pvp/whatever CEO alt for a rainy day, basically a market checker Hauler alt mainly for other account's mission runner char
Account #2:
Mission runner/industrialist/cynos Hauler alt for Ben, PvP support/cynos Small time trader/cheap scout/cynos
Ben has 99% of the training time on the first account but the training time is somewhat more spread out over the three chars on the second. While I obviously have the ability to "metagame" by the OP's definition, I actually don't very often in practice as I have a tendency to get myself killed due to my own inability to multitask effectively.

As someone who often has 3 active accounts I can think of a huge number of uses for those alt slots. Firstly it is possible to max out a character in a certain area (industry, research, trade) fairly quickly. Having alt slots allows me to put two utility characters on an account then train another for combat (a skill tree which can take years to perfect). As a director in a 0.0 alliance there is often stuff that needs doing back home when my pvp main is off shooting people. Being able to quickly re-log as an alt to change station settings or fuel a POS is invaluable. On top of that the CEO of my industrial corp is on my main account as often I let the other two lapse for periods of time due to real life financial issues. Without alt slots the other members of said corp would be stuck if they needed roles, or if someone needed removing suddenly I'd have to find money for a time card.
I currently have my accounts set up like this:
Account 1: PvP Main, Corp CEO, Alliance station/POS whipping boy Account 2: Freighter/Industry, Covops Scout, Research Account 3: Freighter/PvP, Research, Trade
All but 3 of those characters have all the skills they need to excel in their fields (in fact the only reason my freighter characters are branching out is that I needed something else to train on the account). Would you rather I had to pay extra for them? Surely half the point of your subscription fee is to pay for the ability to keep training.

I think the current level of content in eve could support two skill training lines per 3 character slot account, but I understand why ccp sets it up as they do now, because if many people could train on multiple chars the subscription rate might go down, as only cap ship pilots would really need a second account under those circumstances... I have 3 characters on my main account, 2 of which are little used trade alts which give me coverage on 3 of the 4 main trade hubs. Handy for contracts. On my alt account I have a main character which is a cyno, hauler and support character and another trade alt in jita, which allows me to have good coverage yet still have my main logged in.
With just one account I had a hauler char and a trade alt. The main reason for the 3 char setup is probably the security rating, as you need at least one alt to have access to all the empire goodness if you have low sec ratings and are not self sufficient (which you can never be with skills for example).
