Hi,
Let me just start off by letting you all know that I'm no Linux "wiz", I set up some Gentoo server's a while back and thats basically it. It still only took me about 45 minutes to get Ubuntu, Cedega and EVE up and running. What I've been doing on and off the past few days is collect information about what seem to be the most common problems when running EVE on Linux.
This is of course only to get the ball rolling, I know there was another thread but a lot of the info in it is now out of date.
Cedega
Cedega EVE-Online Forums.
IÆm getting very bad fps.
Make sure your display drivers are fully up to date. Try running the client in fullscreen mode, in most cases you get better fps that way.
IÆm missing fonts from missions and chat windows.
Try disabling the ôVirtex Shadersö
1. Right click the EVE icon in Cedega, choose ôEdit Propertiesö 2. Select ôEdit Settingsö in the Advanced Settings Overrides section 3. In the ôgraphicsö tab, deselect the ôVirtex Shadersö option.
Black screen, unable to type in the password field.
Most likely due to Cedega not being up to date. To force update Cedega select TransGaming -> Check for updates from the file menu. Make sure you select all the options available and click ôOKö. (If Cedega hangs on update and you're running Ubuntu, it's probably due to the bash/dash Cedega issue, see the known issues.)
I still canÆt type anything in the password field.
Make sure ariel.ttf is in the windows/fonts directory in Cedega.
When I click play nothing happens.
Make sure youÆre using the GDDB EVE profile, and that youÆre running it in winxp compability mode. (If you don't have this update your Cedega)
How do I run EVE in fullscreen mode in a Cedega window?
In the EVE display settings, choose fullscreen and a resolution you wish to run.
Now change the Cedega EVE display settings:
1. Right click the EVE icon in Cedega, choose ôEdit Propertiesö 2. Select ôEdit Settingsö in the Advanced Settings Overrides section 3. In the ôgeneralö tab, select the resolution you chose in EVE under the ôdesktopö menu 4. Deselect DXGrab in the general window to allow your mouse to leave the Cedega window.
Known Issues:
* Ubuntu now uses dash as the default sh implementation instead of bash. Several Cedega scripts arenÆt fully compatible with dash, the workaround is to switch the default shell back to bash. It can be done with the following command (and selecting no):
sudo dpkg-reconfigure dash - select no when prompted
* Alt + F1-F12 doesnÆt work.
* Switching between fullscreen and window mode, sometimes causes CTDÆs.

some links to other forums posts: original thread about linux support Thread about running EVE on Mac with x86 architecture (Crossover for Mac)
external links: EVE entry in the wine application database EVE entry in the codeweavers application database (Crossover for Linux/Mac) these list/link to known problems/workarounds
I wonder if anyone tried compiling wine on an Intel Mac to test it with Eve.
general notes: - fps might be different on Cedega/Wine/Crossover and change from Eve and program versions - sometimes Cedega has a demo version available, wine is free, Crossover has demo versions for linux and mac available

If you are experiencing black screen on portraits (characters screen and or iconic portraits in game), ensure that the graphics settings tab for EVE in cedega has FBO unchecked. This WILL speed up fps somewhat, but causes problems with portrait rendering.
The fullscreen > windowed mode > fullscreen normally works fairly well ONLY while docked. If you are in space, do NOT do it as its a guaranteed way to end the session.
Also, greetings NOZH, and thank you for the sticky to this. It is MOST appreciated!

The ALT-Function not working will be the desktop stealing those key presses. I fixed it in my distro by making an entry in KDE settings for removing all desktop shortcuts when Cedega is selected. I force Eve into a window with Cedega. This then allows shrinking of Eve using the mouse/taskbar which itself is shrinkable.

/Nozh.
This can be solved by making sure that you have the "MS Core Fonts" package installed. Install this through the update function of cedega an be sure to have selected "MS Core Fonts"

Well, I can get EVE running in Cedega under Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro, with all the latest ATI proprietary drivers and all.
However, the game seems to freeze almost everytime I click on a stargate. In addition, I get I see wireframe cubes in the universe, planets, and even on my character (during character creation). Finally, the picture preview in the chat looks corrupted a lot.
However, I do not seem to have any of these issues with Wine 9.31. However, I do get a better FPS and overall 'look' in Cedega than I do in Wine, so I am hoping to get it running better with Cedega somehow.
Does anyone else have these issues with ATI cards? (I hear most of these issues aren't with NVidia).. however, I don't think it's graphics related since I don't see these issues with Wine.
Thanks.

Cedega 5.2.10 + Latest Ubuntu = Eve works perfectly ...
Except one thing : - If I use a Razer Copperhead Mouse (USB, 2000Dpi and 1Ghz USB polling), I drop from 198 FPS to 5 FPS if I move it (even if I switch to 400DPI/125Hz USB polling) - If I use a Logitech MX500, my FPS drop from 198 to 125.
Anyone has an idea to avoid this problem ?

I do hope it's true. Though I hope that if they do use Transgaming Cider for the Mac client, that the ATI support is better than Cedega (also from Transgaming). As it stands right now, I'm having issues using Cedega with my ATI card (as stated in a previous posts), but that's for Linux and not Mac.
As for the Linux client, it makes me wonder if they are doing an OpenGl port of it, or if they are using a third party porting software like Cedega?

Ok, I will reply to my own question : I've managed to solve my mouse problem : I've installed XFCE, and no problems at all with my mouse. But with Gnome the problem is present.
So it was just a WM problem ...

A lot of the issues relating to ATI cards can be traced back to their drivers, though the driver made a lot of progress over the past year. It is still lacking in a lot of parts, support with Cedega increases with every release though along with performance.

If you have problems updating/upgrading to cedega 6.0 the following will probably get you back in business:
<snip> Just a heads up after I installed 6.0 I could not launch any games. They would not run I could see the wineserver running in the process list but the games would never launch. I fixed it by
backing up my cedega directory so that I would not lose my games mv .cedega ./cedega-old
apt-get --purge remove cedega-small
in home dir rm .transgaming_global rm .cedega rm .cedegarc
Then dpkg -i cedega-small_6.0_all.deb
run it and you should get the setup wiz
After that you can move back the game directories only from cedega-old to .cedega
<snip>
Thanks to alienj20 on the cedega forums for this one.

I just wondering with the lag issues running under XP, will Cedega running under Linux will add a bit more lag to it. It would be nice just to have Eve clients available on Linux and Mac. I think Vista has created a turning point in OS selection, if Linux community (the world) gets the OS installation more user friendly to the less linux gifted, it would be nice to drop Vista and move to MAC or Linux OS. having eve clients running native in Linux will be magic if Eve can perhaps ask the Linux community to help in creating a eve client.

Edited by: Sevarus James on 13/04/2007 13:05:45 one word regarding lag: LESS. I have experienced less lag/latency under linux than I EVER did under XP. Do NOT confuse latency with the client's frame rate. There's a lot more to it than that. See my post in general section regarding the IBM article for more info.

Edited by: Sevarus James on 16/04/2007 15:43:12 Edited by: Sevarus James on 16/04/2007 15:37:29 So, after some more fiddling about and playing with the nvidia control panel/cedega 6.0 settings, here are the results, and they even surprised me!
First, my specs:
x2 3800 dual core AMD nforce4 nvidia moboard using the ck804 onboard sound. 2 gig 128bit dual channel corsair ram nvidia 7950 Evga 512meg video card (non sli mode) nvidia 9755 video drivers ubuntu 6.10 edgy (current) cedega 6.0
Running EVE fullscreen at 1900x1200 resolution on a 26" widescreen Acer LCD. Running cedega in a window with EVE running "fullscreen" produces nearly identical marks even at lower resolution.
Now onto the settings:
Cedega settings:
general tab settings: scheduler=no checked: decrease wineserver priority accelerated interprocess.
SOUND -yep, it does work! using alsa for sound ctl device= default pcm device= default ---normally these two will default to "hw". This will cause problems on some systems (mine.) replacing this with "default" fixes my sound issues completely, and I see no framerate hit with or WITHOUT sound.
mmap NOT checked -not needed for audio. (This, iirc, is for outbound, such as voice comms.)
Graphics Tab
Manually set the video to the card's specs: video ram=512 agp vertex=128
This doesn't seem to make much difference, whichever is chosen: pixel shaders=1.4
EVE doesn't use 2.0 vertex shaders=1.1
checked: nv_var arb_vbo
UNCHECK framebuffer/float Uncheck GL shading language Uncheck Occlusion Queries. ---------what surprised me here is that FBO, although problematic in 5.2.10 and lower tended to INCREASE frame rate. In 6.0, it seems to DECREASE it. By unchecking these new settings, my framerate jumped about 20% over having them checked.
-----
Nvidia control panel:
X Server XVideo Settings:
sync to " " uncheck both entries.
OpenGL Settings:
3/4 to the right on the performance slider uncheck "sync to vblank" CHECK "allow flipping"
Antialiasing settings: uncheck all.(if checked).
In EVE: 1900x1200 Fullscreen prefs.ini buffersize=512 ---I have audio=1
- I am seeing NO difference in framerate under cedega using alsa or having sound off.
Results and screenshots: Character screen: 185fps In station= 73fps
In Space:
At station=46fps In warp = 61fps At gate= 48fps By planet= 45fps Deadspace Complex entry with clouds: 38fps
--these are averages. lows were in the mid to high 30's, and I, for the first time ever saw 71fps during warp at one point.
Please realize your mileage will vary with hardware, but this is the best fps I've ever...EVER had with EVE under Linux.
Hope this helps some of you who have been futzing about with settings.
Attached screenshots:
At Gate 48fps
Out of warp 67fps

I've got eve running fairly well on ubuntu with wine (v. 0.9.35), though using the fglrx ATI drivers was a no go, I've had to install AIGLX drivers, but now it works fine. A few graphical glitches here and there, but otherwise I'm very happy with the outcome.

.9.35 has a known memory leak issue. You may be happy with the results, but after a period of time it will suck your system resources dry. .9.34 would be a better solution at this time.

well...maybe i missed a post about this :P....i think i can fix the fps problem and still run in window mode. this also works for windows but makes a huge difference with linux. be sure your res for the game client is LESS than the res for the desktop/monitor. for me this means the difference between playable and not.

I've got one problem, which may or may not be entirely separate from the OS.
The planet depth stuff seems to be wrong. The centre of the planet (as you look at it) is fine, but the edges (where I imagine there is supposed to be some sort of could/halo effect) is jerky. Also, with planets with rings, the part of the ring behind the planet can jump in front and flicker back and forward between the two.
I've tried changing the depth buffer, but whenever I do it crashes Eve and the original settings are there before hand. Now my dissertation is over (woo!) I'm working on getting everything working correctly on my linux box.
I'm using Cedega 6.0 under gentoo-2.6.20-r2. 1gig DDR2, 1.83 Core 2 Duo, nVidia 7600 Go. Yes it's a laptop *grin*.
And yeah, I can get 200fps in station with no windows up, around 25 with windows covering the whole screen, 40 in warp, 20 in missions.
I'll get some screenshots of the problem when I get home. I'm thinking it's depth buffer problem, but I don't have a windows install to check.

Ok but, is it really playable? As in, in real situations etc? Does it cause more graphics lag in big battles or not? Does it crash more often in awkward situations, etc...?
And also - is Cedega worth getting if it works with wine as well? Please advise, because i am getting very sick of Windows and i generally keep it just because of EVE(other game i actually play atm is Quake, which i can get in Linux aswell), so i'd be oh so happy to finally ditch it. AIGLX is an Xserver extension to allow compositing engines (the beryl eye-candy). BUT it is usable only with Nvidia cards. For ATI you need XGL.
1. check what driver are you using (from your post it looks like ati fglrx) 2. check fglrxinfo if all is ok (direct rendering and such)

I've installed EVE on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn by running the Setup inside Wine. When I launch it the game says something about missing D3D. I have read at some places that I have to launch the D3D-setup in EVE's bin directory. But nothing happens when I do.
What can I do?
I did not compile Wine myself as I read that this is no longer necessary.

Hello all! It seems to be no problem to run EVE on NVidia and ATI cards... But how to make it work on Intel? I have MacBook with Intel GMA950 video card, tried all versions of wine from 0.9.34, tried cedega, tried crossover - but it crashes at some (constant) places of the universe (sometimes even inside stations). Is it possible to do anything? P.S. I'm getting MUCH better graphics in linux, at approximately same FPS... And the EVE is the only one why I keep windows on my little hard drive (10gig eaten...Hrrrr!)

yes it's possible to do something try wine-0.9.36 as it is the best working version with Eve atm submit a bug at winehq (post your driver version, locations where the crash occurs, add how often it happens at that place) basicly make it so that an other person can reproduce the problems

check your .wine/drive_c/windows/system32 for this file: d3dx9_30.dll i can reproduce this 'missing d3d error bla..' when i delete this file. but wine writes this file back into the system32 dir instantly when i click the 'yes' button.
This file didn't exist and also never appeared during anything I did with the game. I ended up copying it from a xp machine and now it works.
I do have one more problem though: I can't run the updates. When I do they corrupt my game files...

You need to run `wine RedistD3DXOnly.exe' form the eve/bin/ dir to setup the dx properly.
What version of wine? Right now wine-0.9.36 is the only one that works. the two latests versions are bugged, and there is an official bug open on the wine site.
FYI; I run Gentoo 64 bit. I have eve 100% playable on my AMD 3200 with a 128MB POS Nvidia video card (FX-5200) I think. It took quite a bit of playing around at first, but if anyone needs help running eve under wine (f*** cedaga) hit me up on aim "AKA Popsikle" ;)

Not sure where to elsewhere put this for the moment, so i'll stick it in here :)
I don't play Eve on Linux (yet), but rather boot my Windows machine to play it. So my problem is i have a hard time catching Skill Training Times.
I use EVEMon on Windows, and quite like it. Sadly it doesn't run under Linux.
Long story short: I've written a little tool mainly for myself that monitors my Characters Skill Training times and notify me when to boot my Windows and switch a skill.
It's still in development, but does the job for me, so i hope it's usefull to other Linux Users aswell.
Here's the Site EveTimer
Some Remarks: - It needs your account info, and saves it to ~/.config/EveTimer/ - It is a Python/PyGTK tool - It's GPL so you can take a peek, and verify i don't send your account info anywhere :-) - I've only tested it with Gnome, but it should run fine with KDE
Report any bugs you find to the Ticket system on my site.

FYI from Transgaming:
<snip>
Hey everyone,
I'm sure you are all eagerly waiting to get playing Revelations 2 under Cedega. We have prepared a 6.0.2 release to resolve the issues that occur when launching. Unfortunately we ran into some deployment issues and haven't been able to release it yet.
To get you going in the meantime, you can work around the startup issues by creating the "Local Settings/Application Data" folder under ~/.cedega/EVE Online/c_drive.
Happy gaming! Daniel

CEDEGA 6.02 is out.
From the release notes:
# Support for EVE Revelations II. # Fix Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source font issues when running in Windows 2000/XP compatibility mode. # Fix intro video regression in games such as Command & Conquer: Generals. # Compatibility fix for Geforce 8x00 video cards and the NVIDIA 100.xx drivers. # User interface modifications due to changes in website infrastructure. # Fix for ALSA detection issues on some systems. # Added flexibility in how GDDB profiles can be specified from command line. # Fix for GDDB 'Invalid attribute VertexShadersLevel' error message.
As a note, you MUST upgrade the interface to the 6.02 version BEFORE trying to update the engine to 6.02. (The new interface fixes problems with updates.)

On the wine website it tells you how to fix that without having to copy the file over: (from http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=7342)
If it doesn't work you might want to start with a new ~/.wine directory.
- run "wine winecfg" to setup/configure your wine install (mainly sound driver) - you can copy the Eve folder into ~/.wine/drive_c/ or install from scratch. (try without the cache folder first) - copy arial.ttf to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts/ - install the d3d9x_30.dll by running the RedistD3DXOnly.exe in the bin dir
If Eve crashes/hangs after the character selection you need to add "voiceenabled=0" to cache/prefs.ini. This is needed if you have a voice enabled account or try to test on Singularity when voice is enabled there. optional you might want to set VideoMemorySize to the amount of video ram for your gfx card and OffscreenRenderingMode to pbuffer for improved icon rendering. check the wiki then use "wine regedit" to edit the values/create the keys. Don't forget to remove the old icons by deleting the cache/Pictures folder.
-- Having tried patching it under wine yet, so can't say if that works or not for me

Game runs very well for me in Fedora 7 (i686 version)
I'm using Wine version 0.9.36 Nvidia driver version 100.14.09 (From the Livna repo http://rpm.livna.org/) Kernel version 2.6.21
Using Alsa for the sound.
Video card is a geforce 7600 GT CPU is in AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800 1 GB RAM
I was shocked how easy it was to setup and get working The performance is very good, better then on my core2 laptop running Win XP. I had the minor glitch with the chat window after the patch but was very easy to fix.

Apart from TeamSpeak and Ventrilo, there are actually at least 2 very similar cross-platform open source voice communication programs being developed. One of them is fairly close to being what I would consider to be ready, the other has not yet made an alpha release and is thus definitely not ready to be used while gaming yet (we are working on it though).
The one that I consider to be almost ready is called Mumble.
The other one I will probably not mention until it is a lot closer to being ready, because I don't want the first impression of it to be too bad (and you don't really have any use for it yet anyway).

There hasn't been a release since then, but that doesn't mean that they aren't working on it.
If you know how to compile it yourself you could try downloading it from svn. If not, a new version will hopefully be out soon. (Scroll to the last few messages, the beginning of that thread is old.)

Try using regedit to set VideoMemorySize to the amount of memory your graphics card has.
See this link for info on where in the registry it's supposed to be (you might have to create it).

Just wondering, how well are EVE running for you all on Linux? Got: AMD x2 4200 Nvidia 7800gtx 256mb 2gb ram
And i'am wondering about giving Linux a try with Wine/Cedega and EVE. Running vista x64 now(running pretty well btw). I wonder if anyone have a slightest opinion on how well you think this would run on Linux compared to vista?

My sig says it all. heh heh. Actually my bet is that performance wise (vista vs. linux) they would be very similar with the edge going to linux for better driver (nvidia)/(sound) support. When I compare framerates with corp members, I find that I'm either the same....or slightly BETTER at times with them. Those comparisons are with XP users to my Ubuntu system.
I use Cedega, and its FPS is slightly better than the same rig under wine, but I use/pay for cedega as it (currently) has basically no gfx issues. Wine still has some glitches. (nothing serious or not playable but they are there.)
That all said, CCP has indicated an actual linux and mac client due in August of this year. You might want to spend that time familiarizing yourself with the differences between the operating systems. If you are a linux NEW user, then Ubuntu, PClinuxOS, Mandriva, Sabayon are all good choices to get started with. I'd recommend Ubuntu simply for the fact that it currently has the BEST user support forums out there, and 99% of the time, if you have a technical or usage question, its already been asked/answered.

AMD x2 3800 dual core. NFORCE4 gigabyte m.board /onboard 7.1 sound NVIDIA 7950 GT 512meg pci 2 gig corsair ram (dual channel 128bit config) 300 gig sata drive Ubuntu 7.04 32bit cedega 6.02 logitech bluetooth keyboard/ mx1 lazer mouse
I have never had great luck with 64bit. Seriously wonky stuff with certain apps has been my experience. The speed differences tween 64bit and 32bit have never been "visible" enough to warrant migration over to 64bit yet. 32bit has been fast, smooth and most of all compatible with the applications/games I run/play without the necessity of chroots and such.

Game is still running fine for me but a few bugs I've noticed, none are show stoppers but:
My desktop cursor appears along with the eve cursor, so it appears I have two mouse cursors.
Sound drops sometimes and then reappears delayed (i.e, it will say warp drive active after ship finishes warping) checking the terminal window Wine has given a few ASLA errors
The ship module fitting screen is kind of screwed up, transperancy wise, can still see it but colors look garbled I'll take a screen shot next time to demonstrate.
When I alt tab betwen eve and the desktop (I'm runing eve full screen) and then switch back to eve the keyboard doesn't respond anymore, makes it impossible to check thing in oog browser, can't log out of eve either since none of the keyboard input is accepted. Basically have to do a hard reboot to avoid this.
I plan on installing the next version of wine when it hits the repo's, don't really like compile stuff from source as it screws up the package management a bit (at least in my experience). In the meantime anyone got an suggestions?

I'm running Cedega/Revelations II, works great except for one part. I use Twinview (dual 1680x1050 monitors) and Eve detects the resolution as 3360x1050. Here's what I've tried: - Turning eve into windowed mode... The only selectable resolution is 3360x1050. - Enabling "Desktop" mode in cedega for Eve... This makes a window of size 1280x1024 (or whatever I specify) that has Eve in it, but eve is drawing as if it's still on 3360x1050 (I only see half of the screen). - Both (eve windowed mode & cedega desktop mode)... Essentially the same thing. - Tweaking the prefs.ini... I've tuned destkopWidth and desktopHeight with absolutely no affect whatsoever... Not even sure why this file is here.
Any ideas? I'd sure appreciate them.

Had some trouble with the client showing white text boxes. Turned OFF the pixel shader and vertex shader options under the cedega global settings...now it works. with my in game options tuned down I get about 60 fps inside the station.
As to the huge resolution problem, if you're doing cedega, go to edit, global settings, and where it says desktop... set that at a reasonable resolution. I then ran eve in fullscreen, inside a cedega window. It let me select 1280x1024 with no trouble.
*edit* Though i did have some resolution touchiness till I disabled my second monitor. That tended to make it think it was a big widescreen monitor. With resolutions to match.

Earlier, in Revelations 3.14 this problem was solved by launching eve with LC_ALL=ru_RU.koi8r LANG=ru_RU.utf8 wine eve.exe, but with Revelation 3.20 expansion I see only splash screen (it disappear after 5 secs) and then ExeFile.exe process just hang in memory. If I launch game withount LC_ALL=ru_RU.koi8r LANG=ru_RU.utf8 - it is working, but without cyrillic input... Is any ideas how to fix it?
BTW - I've tried to launch wine's notepad, and i can't type cyrillic too, but if I launch it with LC_ALL=ru_RU.koi8r LANG=ru_RU.utf8 wine regedit - problem dissapeared...
Arial.ttf, Arialuni.ttf is present.

I'v hunting through posts and I dont think anyone has the same problem as me, I have set all the recommended settings for the game but I cant seem to get past the login screen, it loads it all but then when changing to go into the char selection screen it just closes with no errors, I am running beryl might this be messing with it?

Upgrade to the latest version of wine (0.9.40), that should fix it.

Originally by: Aaron Koss has any one used crossover to run EVE, and does any one know how to fix the black screen for the login window using crossover? I'm very new to Linux and just can't figure this out.
I am running it through crossover. The only think I needed to get it working, was to copy arial.ttf from a windows installation into the eve bottle windows/fonts folder. You may also want to copy the dirext9 dll from windows\system32 directory in the bottle too.

Just a quick note: I spent the day working on this.
WINE 0.9.40, latest (as of today, 07-06-07) EVE build. Dell Latitude D800 Laptop. Geforce Mobile 64mb gfx card.
It works just like the WINE database says. Copy the font file, and so on and so forth. A couple differences from other people's experiences:
RedistD3DXOnly.exe didn't work. It fails with " err:setupapi:do_file_copyW Unsupported style(s) 0x144". I simply copied the file over and it works fine.
The game fired up ok and worked just fine. However, the framerate was *horrible*. A word on my hardware. Unlike most of the folks here, I have no 1337 hardware. My laptop is pretty nifty for a laptop. 1920 X 1200 resolution and all that. 2 gb of RAM. But it's still a laptop. With a 'mobile' graphics card. So I figured I might have been just screwed.
Just to be safe, I swapped out drivers. Switched to the 'nvidia' driver instead of the xorg 'nv' driver. Framerate is now totally playable. Game seems stable after a few hours of playing. It certainly doesn't look as pretty as my windows desktop, but I'll chalk that up to a crappy GeForce mobile card, rather than my old-but-still-rad-and-kickin Radeon 9800 Pro.
I've gone ratting sucessfully, hit a few easy level III missions with no real problems. It's not the 60-70 fps other people are reporting, but I'm happy. Most importantly it's seems stable. Which is good, seeing as my XP box randomly reboots. Usually after I finish setting a spread of probes...or right after I wander into someone else's hostile fleet...
Anyway, that's my two cents.
WINE + Ubuntu + EVE + nvidia driver == happy

openSuse 10.2 wine 0.9.40 (currently set to Win2k mode, anybody know if it works better in others?)
Core2Duo 1.83GHz, mobile GeForce Go 7600 (256MB VRAM, proprietary nvidia driver) 2GB system RAM
The game is playable, and graphics quality is quite tolerable. However, framerates are perhaps 40% what I get in Vista (23fps sitting at a POS, ~30fps in warp, 16fps or less ratting in belts). I don't dare go on a fleet op with that kind of rate. Sound is good (ALSA 1.14 I think) and EVE updates worked. Alt-tab did not crash EVE, but it took a while for the display to fix itself when EVE was restored.
To the guy above me: the nv (open source nVidia driver) doesn't support modern 3d acceleration in hardware, so it uses software emulation. This will simply destroy your framerates. The proprietary nVidia drivers are much better.
Questions: Has anybody used both wine 0.9.36 and .40, and if so what were your experiences? Since I have a legit Windows version and don't mind using its libraries, are there any DLLs I should instruct wine to use? Does anybody know which version of Windows I should tell wine to pretend to be? Does anybody have suggestions for improving framerates? Reducing resolution isn't really an option (laptop screen) but I dropped the colors to 24bit depth and that gave me about 10% improvement.

Edited by: Sevarus James on 07/07/2007 13:54:33 I'm a cedega user, and posted some cedega tweaks in this thread awhile back, but I also use wine (currently .9.40) to test and assist eve users that are not cedega users.
This link gives a bunch of useful registry tweaks to improve things under wine, and some of them will probably get you some speed fps-boost. Keep in mind, that just like in windows (tm), the registry can be a dangerous toy (read explosive device).

Hope that helps some of you wine users.

1. .9.36 doesn't have "alsa" issues on my system. .9.40 doesn't see alsa on my ubuntu 7.04 rig. Both seem VERY playable, but .9.40 is more "native" as far as installation, as well as map fixes.
2. You don't need ANY native windows stuff for EVE and wine. (I'd recommend against it, as any changes to wine could bork your install down the road.)
3. Preferably wine should be set to be "XP". You can run as 2k, but XP is the safe choice.
3. See my post directly above this one for 'tweaking' the registry.

I'm getting a bunch of these when running it in wine :
fixme:d3d_draw:drawPrimitive Using software emulation because not all material properties could be tracked
So I suppose it's slower in linux atm. I haven't made any attempt at optimizing yet though, and I haven't made any tests to see which is faster of windows and linux either atm.

Hey all,
I've got a question. I'm reasonably proficient using gentoo, and I thought I would give EVE a whirl under it after reading this thread.
I have Cedega installed and updated. Installed EVE using it and it does work. However, fps is nowhere near what it is in XP.
I have a GTS 8600 vid card. I installed the latest nvidia drivers directly from their website. I checked to make sure that DRI is working and the output of glxinfo seems to indicate it is.
However, if I go into the graphics properties within eve, it shows I'm using the Direct3D HAL. Should it say this or show my nvidia card? That seems to indicate EVE is using software emulation instead of my graphics hardwar. I'm at work atm, so I don't have access to my computer, but the only thing I can think of is I may not have set the GDDB setting to eve before playing. Would that make a difference?
Also, I'm running gnome atm, but maybe switching to XFCE would help?
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated :)

The Direct3D HAL is normal. You may want to make sure you are funning eve "fullscreen". If EVE is set via its settings to 'windowed', your FPS will be crap. You can run, via cedega, windowed with full FPS by setting EVE fullscreen within game, and use the desktop settings in cedega to run "windowed".
Check this post Cedega Tweaks
for additional speed 'boosts' for cedega+EVE.

Hi all, I am having some problems. After much messing around I finally got Eve working on my Ubuntu 7.04 and Cedega 6.0.2, but then of course Eve patched and ever since, the splash screen displays, stays there for a few mins then just closes.
I launched through the terminal instead and this is the dialog I got:
howie@howie-ubuntu:~$ cedega -run "Eve Online" "Play EVE" /usr/lib/transgaming_cedega/gddb.py:24: RuntimeWarning: Python C API version mismatch for module gddb_parser: This Python has API version 1013, module gddb_parser has version 1012. import gddb_parser Moving all local fonts to /home/howie/.transgaming_global/Fonts and removing local Fonts directory mv: target `/home/howie/.transgaming_global/Fonts/' is not a directory: No such file or directory rmdir: /home/howie/.cedega/Eve Online/c_drive/windows/Fonts: Directory not empty ln: creating symbolic link `/home/howie/.cedega/Eve Online/c_drive/windows/Fonts/Fonts' to `/home/howie/.transgaming_global/Fonts': File exists cat: /home/howie/.transgaming_global/Fonts/tg_font_version: No such file or directory [: 337: 81: unexpected operator 10811: old priority 0, new priority 10 10812: old priority 0, new priority 10
And then it terminates. From what I can see it is something to do with fonts, but I have checked the fonts and installed core microsoft fonts to the relavent directory so does anyone know what the problem could be? Thanks.

I think that the critical line is here:
Quote: RuntimeWarning: Python C API version mismatch for module gddb_parser: This Python has API version 1013, module gddb_parser has version 1012. import gddb_parser
It looks like thier move to Stackless Python also included some changes to the Client. I'm guessing that the client seems to get upset when there is a mismatching version of python already installed on the end user's system.
However, it is odd that it would even check since for the Windows users, most of them don't even have Python installed. I supposed that if they installed the Windows Python API that they might have a similar problem. It's hard to say.
All i do know is that I am getting the same type of problem, although my error is rather different. Unfortunately, there isn't enough space here to paste my error, so I'll put it in the next post...

It is located in the \Program Files\CCP\EVE\bin\Microsoft.VC80.CRT directory. I tried moving all four files to the system32 dir in Wine and Cedega and still no luck; even added the MSVCR80.dll to the Eve settings in winecfg did not work. Though I am a noob when it comes to Linux but I am determined to get it running and stop using MS altogether.

It seems that after fixing the splash and crach bug but there is an issue with black screen. Looks like it's a problem with the cachefolder.
Here's how I did...
Under UBUNTU Feisty and Cedega 6.0.2 it looks like this: 1. /home/***/TransGaming_Drive/Program Files/CCP/EVE/lib/ Here you will have to create copys of lib.ccp and name them lib2.ccp, lib3.ccp and so on. Some users have reported that you might have to create as many as 20 of them...
After this is done I get past the splash and death.
2. Cedega create the cache folder and settings under /home/***/TransGaming_Drive/Program%20Files/CCP/EVE/%3F%B3%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%01%3Fu%3F%B3%3F%3F%3Fb%12/CCP/EVE/ This folder get a realy odd name, %3F%B3%3F%3F%3F%3F%3F%01%3Fu%3F%B3%3F%3F%3Fb%12 and I think that's where the client craches and I get a black screen.
This folder is recreated every time you delete it and start eve client the cache + subfolder and settings folder are recreated.
No ide why the client don't use the right folders: /home/***/TransGaming_Drive/My Documents/EVE/cache <-- The client don't write any subfolders here!? /home/***/TransGaming_Drive/My Documents/EVE/capture /home/***/TransGaming_Drive/My Documents/EVE/logs
3. /home/***/TransGaming_Drive/Program Files/CCP/EVE/????VE/???? and /home/***/TransGaming_Drive/Program Files/CCP/EVE/?????????? are also recreated every time. In them are: /CCP/eve/ but no files.
Either Cedega 6.0.2 or eve client are roxaly messed up atm...
Any ideas for fix for the cache and settings folder?

(*** = linux username)
I'm not completely sure why that's happening to you. I will say that using cedega 6.02 on a fast machine I do NOT see ANY of these issues. I would uninstall cedega AND eve (completely), and try to reinstall the cedega client cleanly and then a fresh install of EVE. (This resolved ALL of the issues a corpmate of mine was having recently.--something was corrupted in the cedega install.)
I DO see the lib.ccp issue while testing on an older slower machine, but 6-8 copies of lib.ccp in the lib folder fixed it.
No issues on: x2 3800 SATA hdd (300gig) nvidia 7950 GT (512meg) 2 gig corsair memory (128bit dual channel config). cedega 6.02 + EVE
lib.ccp issues on: 2400XP EIDE 80gig WD hdd fx5200 nvidia (256meg ram) 1gig ram cedega 6.02 + EVE ---same issue with lib.ccp occurs with wine .9.41 on this machine.--
My guess is memory timing/hdd access times causing the problem. Faster the machine, less occurrance of these problems.

hmm no issues on 1.7Ghz ever not after full reboot=empty cache nor repeated starting
so it's going to stay a problem until someone with that problem manages to debug it or find the regression in wine IF an old version was working with the current EVE client
on the other side would CCP be able to regression test EVE to see what change on their side resulted in the breakage if they have someone in the company with that problem

I agree there. I'd never have seen the "lib" issue at all, but dug out the old "writing/guest" machine just to see, as its an older slower box. On the x2 3800 box, its been smooth as silk via .9.41 and cedega 6.02. (I'd say even better than the windows users in my corp, as I've had fewer crashes/disconnects/lag in addition to very decent FPS than they have had.)

hmmm maybe you could try the linux/eve/cedega install on the old machine in the new machine or in a chroot (backup first) on the faster machine as it's not wine, not cedega and most likely not the hardware so only the distribution and package/kernel versions remain as difference

Actually the packages/distro is 'exactly' the same. using ubuntu 7.04 (updated to current, and using the 'generic' kernel that comes with ubuntu.) The only differences 'tween the old and the new is the hardware. (ide vs. sata, xp2400 vs x2 3800, and older mo-board vs. nforce4). Driver wise its latest nvidia binaries. I've tried the trial version of crossover on the old box since last post, and it too requires multiple "lib" copies for EVE to work.
Settings for eve via cedega are duplicated, and the registry entry changes for EVE via .9.41 are exactly the same as the new machine. (all I change are the video settings to reflect memory onboard card and pbuffer settings.)
What REALLY surprised me was how decently EVE actually does RUN on the old machine. Granted FPS is much lower, but its still playable. (about 1/2 fps of the new machine, but for an industrial alt or empire hauler, this type of box would still be more than adequate.)

So are there any kernel level performance tweaks that would help run eve? I am hitting approx 50 - 60 fps in station, in space about 30. But when I drag the camera around it drops drastically depending on what I am doing.
I am thinking that this would probably be a scheduling issue due to the fact I am running a dual core. I think if eve/wine/cedega can be given a more real time access to the system that it should resolve these drop outs and up the fps a bit. I was reading an artacal about ET:Quake Wars for Linux where carmack had made suggestions on what patches and such should be enabled in the kernel but I have misplaced them.. Found them =)

You need a low latency kernel for good performance (this applies to both client and server installs). Mostly, make sure your kernel configuration has CONFIG_HZ_1000=y. You should also enable other low latency desktop settings, such as the various preemption capabilities.

Eve needs massive main memory bandwidth. If you are using a P4 motherboard then this will be your problem.
I think problems with dual-core are more obvious than just bad performance. Things like a regular stutter and timings going screwy. But that said, you should be launching Wine/Cedega with "taskset 0x02 cedega" or whatever.

I doubt that will help for Eve. Eve is too slow to notice the diff and runs as a single OS thread anyway.

I have a feeling this bug has something to do with the wine linker and filename enumeration, other games give similar issues regarding resource allocation and calls. |

hi all i also have problems :(
system is IBM Thinkcentre S50 i810 on-board graphics card 1gb ram ( not gfx memory, just regular memory ;) )
im running opensuse 10.2 with wine 0.9.41 latest eve client downloaded a day or so ago
i extracted the files in the RedistD3DXOnly.exe on my work computer so now i have the d3dx9_30.dll but i don't know where it should be copied to .. i tried windows/system32 and several other folders in the program files/eve directories
eve gives me the splash screen and the music starts but i just get a black rectangle in the middle of my screen which i am guessing is where the login page should appear
i copied my Fonts folder from my work's computer over to .wine/drive_c/windows/fonts so all the standard windows fonts (incl arial and tahoma) are present ...
this is the output in the terminal when i run eve.exe:-

i know the gfx 'card' is not the best but it runs games such as Unreal Tournament 2004 just fine.
i posted on the main winehq website http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=8291 and the only suggestion i had was to drop back from wine 0.9.43 to version 0.9.41. i have done this and it has the exact same issue
can anyone please help?? i have been really looking forward to playing this game but im spending all my free trial time getting it working under linux lol !!
(oh in case anyone is wondering, a friend who recommended the game to me registered my account & player to allow me to post here !!) i have no other computers and do not want to have to install windows, not just because of the expense of the OS but also having to loose space from my otherwise perfectly fine linux installation !!!
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!!

Edited by: Minmatarcitizen3921047 on 24/08/2007 20:24:25 I can't seem to get past the Character Selection screen... all characters are empty. Also, none of my setting as persistent. Every time I load the game, it shows me the EULA, and the intro box is checked. when Imake changes in the settings screen (change resolution, etc), it is always back to defaults next time I run the game.... I changes the TransGaming_drive properties to 777 thinking it was a write permission issue, but this had no effect (and has probably made my home dir rwx to any user...).....
Any help?
Using cedega, wine was hopeless.

well i think ive sorted out my problem; i downgraded to wine 0.9.41, re-installed eve, installed direct x and copied the fonts folder from a windows computer (at work, shhhhh!) to the drive_c/windows/fonts .. now it loads to the char selection screen but then crashes .. the problem i have is that the gfx card is a built-in intel i810 .. this is where the problem lies; the card is not supported by Eve lol !!
So a trip to ebay and hopefully in a day or so ill be the proud owner of an FX5200 w/128mb ram which IS compatible, and should let me enjoy the last few hours of my free trial lol !!!

Woot... Installed Ubuntu 7.04 on a new Abit AN9 32X w/AMD X2 5600+, 2MB. System has a Nvidia 7900GS. Followed the directions at Starhunt.com, and wham... worked.
My issues I discovered so far; (not many):
- Have not got sound to work (Can live with that). - "Sometimes" the mouse cursor seems maybe 1 or 2 pixels off. - In the character sheet; when you mouse hover over a skill you are training it wont tell you how much time left.
Overall performance is very good (Faster than my other Windows box, but admittingly not quite as good as a configuration).
No Cedega; just wine and Ubuntu.
I'll keep playing.... and hopefully can finally say, "I'm Microsoft Free" (I *refuse* to drop down $200 for Vista!!)

I'm running two copies of EVE (with sound!) at ~75 FPS (both!) in station. I get about 180 FPS at char select.
The latest NVidia drivers from Nvidia.com work perfectly. Don't mess around with the nv driver or the "non-free" ones from apt. Just download the file from Nvidia.com and install from a console. When it asks to modify your xorg.conf say yes (it makes a backup).

Just a quick question, regarding 2 copies and cedega. How are you running these? Are you specifying video memory in the properties section for each client? Windowed (eve fs -- cedega window?)
I have a very similar rig (7950GT 512meg ram) ubuntu 7.04 but trying to run the second copy via cedega runs into some serious system drag, or just flat crashes the cedega session(s). (running the 2nd copy in wine with primary under cedega works better on my system.)

debug dump file sent to ccp. They are looking at it now. Cedega doesn't likey the new patch.
wine .9.41 works, but you MUST have
audio=0 audiodriver=0 voiceenabled=0
in the prefs.ini file or it will splash/n/crash as well.
(It tests fine here with no sound.)

Oh I know it was a business decision, somebody from CCP mentioned in a post somewhere (sorry, it's all a bit vague i know, maybe the "we want testers" thread) that they went with Transgaming because of the "support" and the fact that they could have a contract and "pressure" the people to deliver Given the latest fiasco, one can only wonder who's doing what between CCP and Transgaming

My guess here is that the sound "updates" (which are vista related) are the culprits here. Wine has a more "configurable" situation with sound, and thus the client WILL run with it unchecked in preferences.
As for support, the official support is for a wrapped client, which cedega itself is NOT. Having been through a coupla' years of updates on the linux side, I'm not completely surprised here, as this has happened a few times. The fixes have always come quickly, so I take the "wait and see" approach for the first couple days. (That and CCP already has the debug file I sent, and replied that they are looking at it now.)

Cedega 6.0.3 has been released and the problem has been resolved. Tested on both an nVidia and ATI box with Ubuntu Feisty 7.04. Also note that it works fine under Wine 0.9.44 with the "no sound settings" in the prefs.ini file and you also have to copy arial.ttf into your .wine/drive_c/windows/fonts directory.

Funnily, my one year Cedega sub ran out last Sunday. Guess that's the little nudge I needed to try out Wine ...
You may have reported that a few weeks ago, but the SISI builds were changing on a frequent basis. CCP gives the code to transgaming before release, but its damn hard to make the final change to ensure functionality IF the codebase is changing right up to or close to the patch release. The fact that less than 24 hours after its released, we're back in business with full sound functionality tells me that transgaming IS on the ball. (Remember that full support between CCP and transgaming will be for the "native client".) Right now, wine works without sound. Cedega is working with sound. From what I understand, the native client should be working with in game voice enabled as well.

The native client probably WILL have it running. This wrapped client is supposed to be identical in functionality to the win-EVE client. Anything less would not be "paying for the same thing" to CCP. It is ALSO why the beta testing starting soon is necessary.
As for cut/n/paste, I voted for that this month again. However, my client has good fps (better even now with 6.03), sound works, and if I have to wait a bit for the native 'wrapper' client for cut/n/paste, so be it. Our corp is utilizing the IGB for almost all operations now, so my need of c/n/p has dropped drastically.

I am referring to the upcoming wrapped client. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I suspect it will be tempting for Transgaming to dip into the modern Wine tree.

I seriously doubt it. The old saw about the evil fork is history...and has been for awhile now. The cedega client upon which the eve wrapper is to be based is working most excellently at this point. From what I can see, the ONLY thing not working with either wine or cedega now is voice. (wine is working again with sound via the one line patch).
So I'm really scratching my head as to why Transgaming would need to "dip" elsewhere, when their own stuff is working, not only for EVE but a lot of other games as well.
This isn't meant as a flame against wine. Just a response to the "dipping into the wine tree".

As an update we have found the issue with the loading order of the .ccp files.
The current 'workaround' involves the creation of multiple lib*.ccp copies until you get the right order.
The offending piece of code has been found, and while it can not be 'fixed' we have come up with another way to reference these files that truely fixes the problem.
I will let you know what patch this is released in.
Sorry for the delay in this but it was a tricky little bug to track down but we have done it. (it was due to the way paths are handled)
So it is some good news there.

No.
We very rarely patch wine because
1) WINE changes a lot, so patches are hard to "port" from version to version even if it applies cleanly. Case in point is the recent sound patch. The user patch applies cleanly to the wine dev patch, but causes it to fail due to the dev patch
2) WINE patches are normally game specific and frequently disrupt other games As such we have many WINE ebuilds in the tree - pick one that works for the games you play.
However, you can be assured that whilst I play EVE I will try provide WINE patches so that the latest WINE works with the latest EVE client. Obviously that will stop one CCP release a Linux client of their own.

I could be wrong but I don't think .44 fixes this problem. The fixes are for other more recent issues.
This problem is a bug in Eve that just happens to be less prone to triggering in Windoze. The Linux filesystem identifies files a little different so the bug triggers more readily. It's not for Wine/Cedega to fix.

Hi All,
I'm a cedega user. However EVE on cedega is very frustrating -- Cedega only allows one client to run. So if you have two or more accounts you cannot use them both. This relegates eve on Linux to the "skill change" category. Thus I rarely run EVE under Linux. After all, it's pretty hard to mine in Null sec without a hauler or a tanker! I hope that the under announced closed beta will include this critical feature!

P.S. The most interesting thing is the fact, that cpp are capable to run eve servers under windows).

Go back toward the end of page 4 and into page 5 of this thread. Solutions to the problem are there. (probably prefs.ini changes will work for you as sound is borked post eve patch under wine .9.44 without source patch.)

I have eve running on ubuntu with cedega. I tryed crossover as well but it would crash after the login spash screen. Overall i'm happy it works, I'm a mac user primarily but linux has come a very long way in user compatibility not to mention almost everything is free. I would love to see a mac/linux client. Wow has a mac client and runs fine on my macbook. I run vista on the macbook to play eve which is the sole reason i have it on that laptop. I'm typing this from a linux box which cost me 350 bucks to build. System is a 3800 x2 with 2gb ram and a geforce 7600 GT. Framerate in cedega is 20-45 outside and 30-65 inside. It seems like you take a 30-50% hit on framerate over windows on the same machine. I had vista running it on the same pc before i installed linux over vista. I'm glad to see it works and the more support for linux the more refined it will be as well as more programs being made to work with it. Open source is really good stuff. Please bring a client to linux!

Err... Don't you have to pay for Cedega? Something like 5 EUR a month? I'd be the first to test EVE on Linux as I've clearly been starting Windows way too often recently, but I couldn't handle another monthly fee. Will they charge me for the client CCP and Transgaming are working on(the one QA talked about)?

This has been answered elsewhere; there won't be any extra fee. You'll pay the same Eve subscription to get the client for your choice of OS.
From what I read, it'll be kind of like Google's Picasa for Linux: Wine is packaged transparently, so you don't (need to) know you're using a translation layer: It Just Works(TM).

Hm. So where's the point, really? Since Eve already works good with wine, making it working perfect can't be that hard (if it's just a wrapped client as you said). Of course i'd like if eve officially supports linux, but couldn't they just participate in developing wine or making the windows client more compatible to wine?

The point is really simple, and CCP has made it clear in other threads:
They are building and maintaining a directx based MMO -read: MOVING TARGET due to continued evolution of the environment. They do NOT have the resources (manpower) to maintain multiple PLATFORM code-bases for EVE. This agreement with Transgaming in one stroke gets EVE on MACS as well as continued official support on the linux side.
Transgaming will be responsible for QA and support for those two platforms. CCP, working with them will ensure that the client is ON THE SAME LEVEL cross platform and at the same level of functionality.
With wine/cedega this is NOT the case: voice comms/sound issues come to mind here as well as patch day problems that affect the linux/mac community only.
If you wish to continue using wine or cedega, noone is stopping you. The OFFICIAL support will be with the 'wrapped' client.
And I'll say this again: there is NO PRICE DIFFERENCE OR ADDITIONAL COST by using this client. (seeing that stuff pop up yet again in threads.)

There is a big point for people like me. I am a complete Linux newb. I have tried getting EVE to run in Linux a couple times with almost no success. I would LOVE to be able to ditch windows so I can spend time learning Linux, but without EVE I just can't convince myself to boot into anything but Windows. If this client works and is seamless I will be finally able to lose my Windows drive and completely convert over. Happy days.

I suspect the one thing the new client won't do is install the needed OpenGL driver. You'll still have to solve that one yourself.

Hi. Just installed wine-0.9.45 in Ubuntu 7.04. I copied the arial.ttf font to the "c:\windows\fonts" of wine and the game is totally playable with no visible artifacts or jump/dock issues. The framerate is acceptable with a Sempron 3000, nvidia 7600gs and 2 gigs ram. I also run the game from an NTFS partition (not that it makes a difference). All the sound options are ON. I use the 32bit version of Linux and wine.

0.9.45 fixes the sound problem (yay!) but I too get text corruption on about 75% of all text (boo!). Both the WineHQ repo version and a version I checked out of git the other week have this issue.

Hey there. Please excuse my ignorance in this topic, and whether or not this question has already been asked. From what I understand, this new Eve client will be built with Transgamings Cedega technology. Now does this mean that we will need to have Cedega in order to use it or is this new client simply using their technology and ideas just to get it to work on linux?

That bug looks like it's simply replacing the correct font with a different typeface; this problem comes out looking like this...
I will try a complete strip-down and reinstall of Wine and Eve, see if that sorts the problem out.
It's not a problem with the nVidia driver, since I get the same issue on my (ATi Radeon) laptop.

Driver "ati" works for me on my laptop, albeit at a hideous frame rate...
Still no luck solving the hideous text problems with 0.9.45, so still soundless running .44.

Ok, i tried fglrx (ati-8.39.4-1plf2007.1 package for my Mandriva 2007.1) from ATI, this time eve started up but Xorg has Direct rendering disabled because Xorg DRI fails to setup interface so it runs like 0.01 FPS I tried everything to get it running, but had no luck to get it working properly. glxgears shows up like 180FPS when actually it is slideshow on screen. The setup was fglrx module for kernel and radeon (not ati!) driver for Xorg. If i try load up fglrx for Xorg, it says "no device found".
Also, i came back to opensource setup, loaded up drm,ati_agp,agpgart and radeon modules. At this time DRI is enabled and glxgears runs fine without slideshow but.. wine + directx fails again
Now i am stuck in drivers configuration hell just to get 3D acceleration running fine and EVE on top. Any more ideas which i could test?

I had similar experience back when I was forced to drop Win98. I went and bought a Geforce on recommendation and bam it worked first try.

I just tried a bit crazy idea - disabled Direct Rendering on opensource ATI drivers and wohaa! EVE got running like it did with closed source drivers. Just wine now floods complains about emulating OpenGL unsuppoted functions. So, seems all mess is somethere with wine D3D part, not with video drivers itself! Btw, when DRI is enabled, i run Armagetron linux game(OpenGL) in fullscreen with 25-40 FPS...

Very interesting. You may be in luck though, but just not "yet". ATI's new 8.41 driver is out, and they indicate that the performance boosts in that driver will get filtered to their "main" driver for other cards in the next month or so. (currently the 8.41 is very limited to just a few cards.)

The problem is - fglrx DOES NOT support DRI in Mobility IGP 320M card on Xorg. You cannot use current and new ATI closed source drivers for loading fglrx as Xorg video driver - it just does not include that card and gives error when loaded. It resides as kernel module only and drm module conflicts with it. And when loading opensource radeon/ati Xorg video drivers on top of fglrx Xorg does not have accel.

Edited by: LTcyberT1000 on 27/09/2007 15:30:05 I tested again EVE+wine in my notebook and got LogServer logs for sofware mode
http://www.itgamos.lt/~arunasp/eve-noaccell.lbw
and accel mode(when crash):
www.itgamos.lt/~arunasp/eve-crash.lbw
Just to note, your life can be made alot easer when trying to run EVE Online in graphics software emulation mode when putting Open GL variable right before wine:
export WINEPREFIX=/path/to/fakewin LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 cd /path/to/eve wine /path/to/eve/eve.exe
Just keep in mind, if your xorg will lockup with this, read this link: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=215021 My own bang was solved when setting AIGLX off in xorg.conf.
If EVE starts up in software emulation mode then there is only DRI part left. This will solve much troubles for starting game up at all.
Hope someone could tell me now where problem with acceleration is?

I tried EVE Voice under Wine the other day for the heck of it...
I was pleasantly surprised that having voice enabled no longer causes the client to crash. I was able to join voice on chat channels and listen to other people, however, they could not hear me. And after a few minutes I would be kicked off voice in all but one channel. I checked the log and couldn't find any obvious reason.
Though that fact that it is at least partially usable is promising and makes me think that CCP, Transgaming, and Vivox might actually get a working solution soon.

same text bug here as already described. some of the text looks like a highly compressed jpg and is unreadable. i also have random pictures from eve cache wrapped around the text.
the text problem occures here: - input fields - chat windows (funny thing: always just the newest entry) - parts of the escape menu (some readable text gets readable and vice versa when changing settings) - password field on the log in screen is totally f* up
market, wallet, char sheet works fine so it seems to be a problem of instantly generated text.
i'm running eve on a asus s6f laptop with onboard intel graphics so the frame rate is bad outside stations. no probs inside stations. flying around is possible (good fps in space when alone, about 1 fps outside rens). map is fine. the overall response time of the client feels faster for example when updating market orders compared to my desktop WinXP machine (which has a dual boot just for eve )

Ummm perhaps a silly notion here but why not just create a version of EVE specificaly designed for linux ?
On an other note though, its really cool to see at least some support from the devs.

They are "kind of" going to create a linux version of eve.
Wine/Cedega have two modes of operation, running a windows program on linux, and using them to compile the source of a windows program into a native linux executable. The only real difference is the first needs the user to set up Wine/Cedega (user does the work), and the second needs the game devs to recompile the game and QA it (company does the work).
The features they support, speed and the bugs are nearly identical both ways, so by working with Cedega to get eve working in the compatibility mode they get to create a native linux version with the second option later.

First off, for the searchers, I've got Eve running on Wine 0.9.46 using Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) following these instructions:-
http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=558791
It doesn't like beryl, and it doesn't like windowed, but I am happy enough to be free of Vista.
On the performance front, on my Sony Vaio VGN-FE41E, that came crippled with Vista, well, guess what, Eve with Wine and Linux is actually faster. Much faster, as in 'I can get into a battle with this'.
Rather than: actually, I'd better not do that on this laptop 'cos the lag is so bad.
I can't tell you all how happy I am to finally have the last reason for running windows removed from my radar. I'm not a Linux fanboy, but Vista has been so rubbish I did a bit of Googling, and Ubuntu is just so much better for day to day stuff. Eve was the last obstacle.
Cheers,
Mike.

I got eve running on both my linux boxes now. (debian etch, gnome) The performance is pretty good I must say, better then in previous attempts I made. I still need to see how combat works but I must say I am very pleased to see most is working correctly (pretty damn good)
I downloaded the latest wine source and compiled it using the provided tool. I had to copy the arial fonts to the .wine/drive_c/windows/fonts directory because of the black login screen issue and then I gave it a go
running fullscreen with the wine setting that the default windowmanager is to be used puts the panels above the eve window witch isn't useful. instead I am using the emulate a virtual desktop setting using a custom resolution a little lower then my screen resolution. Also there are some minor graphics issues here and there like icons not displaying the picture correctly and the spacer in the in-space context menu is not there (between stargates and my places).
I am using compiz fusion and that is giving me no problems at all. One machine has a intel core duo and a intel chipset motherboard with a nvidia graphics card, the other machine has an amd processor and a nforce2 chipset and also a nvidia graphics card. those 2 machines are good hardware platforms for any linux box imho
I am sure that me running eve on linux now has to do with the efforts made by ccp and the wine/transgaming team and I want to thank them for that and I am eagerly looking forward how this will progress in the future.

Hello.
I recently started playing eve-online again, but now I have a problem. Suddenly eve can start to "race" (I have no better term for it), the ingame clock and the graphics starts to move way to fast and after a while it crashes with a bad file descriptor error. I'll post the entire error message when I get eve to start again.
The same thing can happen at the log-in screen, now as I'm typing this the login screen says STATUS:OK (checked 1year 11months.... ago) this can't be normal... If I try to login while in this state I get a connection time out.
I don't have any similar problems in any other opengl/d3d game/application.
I'm using gentoo and wine, with wine and drivers up to date.
Hopefully someone has some idea of what can be wrong.

there is also cpusets, a kernel function that allows you to make "sets" of applications that you wish to run on certain cpus.
http://www.bullopensource.org/cpuset/cpuset.html
a buddy of mine even made a ruby 'frontend' of sorts to manage cpusets...

My mousecursor flickers when i move it - in wine and in cedega :( Eve ist playable, but that flickering annoys the hell out of me !
I read that it could have something to do with the new 100-series of Nvidia drivers, but i have found no solution :(
If i set HWcursor = 0 in xorg.conf i have a completely garbled mousecursor, so that does not help either.
Any ideads how to fix this ? _____

just in passing . EVE runs quite well on the latest version of CrossOver for linux. there are some glitches with some of the graphics that show up in the journal/missions and map graphics functions seem to cause some problem. the game is very playable (even for a noob:), full screened or windowed. i would think it can handle multiple clients??

last time I checked it with wine and native windowed mode it even reduced cpu usage when in background or not focused

EvE does that. On windows also. Most well coded MMORPG clients yield cpu when out of focus (Lineage II is another example).
So nothing to do with linux in particular :)

It's the OS that caps the CPU loading for out-of-focus apps. Games in general just grab 100%. There is no advantage to the game to yeld as that would just lower the framerate.

Wrong. Please do check before you state something like this. You are simply dead wrong. Any well coded game yields cpu out of focus. Any not so well coded game keeps 100% cpu usage and doesn't limit itself. There are plenty of examples.
No point to argue about this, you are just simply wrong, and if you cared to do a little research, you'd see why.
It doesn't even have anything to do with games. Try running Prime95 out of focus. Does it yield CPU? uhmm.. nope. Try running x264 encoder out of focus, does it yield CPU... uhmm... nope.
OS has nothing to do with it whatsoever. You should really learn just one programming language and write some applications, it would help bring down the ridiculousness factor(tm) in some of your posts.
Also, there is every advantage for a game not to use 100% cpu when it is OUT OF FOCUS, it means it's not being used, it means the user can do other things while it's in the background at a better rate - smart application design, something you do not know anything about it seems :/

Edited by: YorikR32 on 31/10/2007 07:24:02 Edited by: YorikR32 on 31/10/:22:55 I'd like to post my findings here.. First off I am running Fedora 7, with the latest FC7 Wine build from the repo's that I have enabled being LIVNA, ATRPMS, FRESHRPMS... I also run the latest NVIDIA drivers from the NVIDIA website as I find the ones from the repo's have soft link issues for the lib's. EVE installs very well indeed. But I have a few little issues that I have worked around:
- Focus Issue where the log in box is unabel to be typed in initially. This is more of a WINE thing as I need to open a second WINE window then I can type in there, this is the same with other WINE apps, so I just open the WINE configurator and the EVE app.
- Sound, turn it off, too much hassle.
- Low FPS, must run in full screen at the nominated desktop resolution, this helps a lot. Also turning off effects and turret effects. I also stop the station animation. FPS is gernally above 25 for in station and 9-20 in space.
- Character and other thumbnails loading crashes the client, this is only an issue on the first download of the thumbnail, so for people you talk to first time, this is an issue, otherwise select the "never download thumbnails" option and you should be good.
- Agent maps are corrupt so forget them, pretty pointless anyway, no great loss.
[*]You can get better FPS with transparency effects on, the occlusion saps some FPS, but only like 1-2..
Being a hardcore Linux user with a few RedHat certs I generally can get most things working. WINE is not my favourite, but this was surprisingly easy to work through. I very much look forward to a Linux client in the future, but for now EVE under WINE will do while my one and only M$ machine is away for repair. (laptop WTY)

hmm I'm running EVE with wine 0.9.48 and sound is running fine (turn hardware acceleration off to avoid random crashes) since (about) wine 0.9.45.
On my machine (C2D 4300 @ 2,4GHZ, GeForce 7800GT) i get about 30fps outside, a lot more inside (with station environment turned off). Well, it lags now and then.
I hope the new patch won't break everything again :((

With CrossOver Linux, I'm running into an issue with the new patch being corrupt. Is that just an issue I'm having, or is it happening to others? If it's just happening to me, how can I fix it. I'm receiving a CRC error on the downloaded patch.

Wrong. I made no error. You "corrected" nothing. Go to school. Or at least google "WM_FOCUS", "Sleep()" ("Sleep(0)"...), "Game Loop". 99% sure that this is exactly what EvE is using, as are most other properly coded games.

Regarding the yielding of CPU while window is out of focus.
A game does not have to be coded to yield CPU, one of the reasons is that (well, I know OpenGL does this) the graphics library simply does not redraw the window (and its contents) while it is occluded. Also, when the window is out of focus, it is very easy for the window manager or the graphics server to simply say "The user is not using this window, give priority to the active one."
When something is being rendered, the CPU still issues commands to the graphic subsystem, unless you use compiled lists (where instructions are assembled before hand and offloaded as a chunk to the graphics subsystem).

cpu usage is still reduced even if the window is fully visible (no reduction in the render area)
apps still get 100% cpu if they like (in background or not) but the cpu goes idle = not used 100% when there isn't an other process using the processor

Edited by: Ryysa on 06/11/2007 07:59:03 As I said, I'm pretty sure EvE uses the good old WM_FOCUS, Sleep(0) (or Sleep(1)) trick.
Otherwise, as El***ER stated, it would not yield cpu and drop it's framerate when it is out of focus, even on a separate monitor with nothing occluding it.

I just wanted to try the wrapped cedega client. The only thing I get is a segmentation fault when the binary "eve" tries to start Point2Play_gui.py. with some print "test" commands i included in this python sourcecode, I now know that python crashes at this line:
import misc_utils, ConfigParser, config_gui, winex_get_gui, winex_get, preferences_gui, p2p_diag, beginners_....
I guess thats the line where it tries to load the other cedega components... could be everything, right?
Is anything else than python and pygtk required to run Point2Play? Something i could have messed up on my gentoo machine?

Everything you mentioned is installed on my system.. And as I don't get a "file not found" or similar error, it must be something different.. I checked several other forums but simply can't find a solution :(

Question for the wrapped client users: Do you have a ~/.cedega/.ui/config.py ? Because when i create ("touch") that file... cedega/eve gives me another error, namely:

Originally by: Oliask I'm running Cedega/Revelations II, works great except for one part.
I have a similar issue except for me, eve only draws at 1024x768, my native desktop resolution.
When in windowed mode, eve always draws at 1024x768. Even if the window size is only 800x600.
Full screen mode works, however my 2nd monitor goes dark so I can not use it to browse.
Running wine in full screen I am able to view my second monitor & use it. Cut and past works between eve and my desktop too.
System is a p4 2.8 2GB RAM Fedora 7 / KDE wind-0.9.46-1.fc7 kmod-nvidia-100.14.19-1.2.6.22.9_91.fc7 Nvidia Geforce 6200 running dual monitors
The new Linux client is nice, however I will be sticking with wine until a solution to this windowed resolution issue is found.
That said, good job so far CCP. Issues like this are to be expected in the beginning.

Just tried the Eve+Cedega package.
I've been using wine 0.9.48 (custom compiled with patches for CSS) and I have to say that the new package doesn't really win anything for me, beside it running in fullscreen properly (compiz doesn't let it take the screen for some reason, as if EVE is creating a fullscreen size window without decorations).
Don't know how the Mac users feel (I haven't checked if anyone tried to get WINE working on OSX-amd64).
Not only that, but I also use some special scripts to start EVE and will have wine create another session for EVE.

Edited by: Leobenn on 07/11/2007 09:44:31 Hey guys,
Not sure of where I should put this, so I'll try here.
I tried the Linux client yesterday, even if it's said not to work with ATI graphic cards (Radeon X1950XT). Well, the client launches anyway, & I could reach the login screen. Login worked, I reached the character selection menu. Then, problems started : I got 2 characters on this account. One was docked in 0.0 when I tried the client, the other one was inspace in empire. Here's what happened :
I could log in with my docked character, went fine, Nice FPS (considering how bad it was with Wine, it was quite a good surprise :)), no major graphical issues.
Then I tried the other, which was inspace when I logged in. No matter how many tries I did, I can't pass the character selection screen. I select my character, it start loading 'Entering game as Leothys...'. When the loading bar reach the end, the game crash, and I'm back to my desktop. I also found out that triyng to undock or opening the map with my docked character crashes the game as well.
Running Eve from the console show some errors on crashes, such as: 0004 :: Bad stuff : Client ignore select setting events from 0x001287834 (not sure about the last number, I'm at work atm)
I was then wondering if any workaround has been found for this problem.
And many thanks to CCP & Cedega for their works, keep on going ! :]
My specs : Xubuntu 7.10 (using XFCE) Athlon64 3200+ 1.5 Go Ram Ati Radeon X1950XT 256Mo (using proprietary driver)
Thanks in advance :)
P.S.: Since I'm french, my english may look quite weird, sorry about that :) |

I think that about sums up the situation. Until the newer efforts toward fixing the ATI driver is completed you can't expect Eve to be stable on Linux using those cards.

Sounds like the issues I'm having as well. No chat windows, no overview, and only a speed bar on the HUD. Getting occasional flashes of the chat windows at a 45 deg angle off in the distance. It looks sorta like the Vista task switcher.
Figured it might be compiz-related, so removed that. No help. Distro is Kubuntu 7.10, fresh install for EVE testing.

I have a toshiba laptop with a geforce 420go or 440go graphics card. Im using the nvidia drivers and I algo get the crash after I select my character. Eve was working ok with wine, just performance was bad. Also when eve starts up the splash screen shows fine, then it goes to fullscreen for the login, but the login box is all solid colors. I was able to make up the loging prompt and password prompt, but there was no graphics or text, just solid colors, sound did work.

I'm rather pleasantly surprised by the smoothness of the new Linux client. I just installed it on a fresh version of 64-bit Ubuntu 7.10, and the only piece of hemlock in the wine was the "crash on splash" bug caused by using ALSA sound. Once I switched to OSS instead, I could actually play Eve under Linux!
Honestly, I had more trouble getting Ubuntu to play straight than to get Eve Online working. Thanks, guys. Keep up the good work!

Hi mates,
Ive installed debian testing with gnome on my notebook, kernel 2.6.22.2
1.7GHz centrino ati 9200 mobile 64mb ram 512 SDRAM -----------
I downloaded the .deb package, did a : dpkg -i xxx.deb . The install took about 25 minutes and there were no problems whatsoever...
I did the "System Tests" in the EVE online configurator, passed all the tests. Switched my sound to OSS.
When I run the game I get the splash screen, then it dies on me. Activating debug shows the following in the logfiles :
0002:warn:x11drv:SWP_DoOwnedPopups (10021) hInsertAfter = 0000 0002:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_SetWindowStyle unmapping win 10021 0002:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_SetWindowPos status flags = 1887 0002:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_DestroyWindow win 10021 xwin 3400004/3400005 0002:trace:x11drv:X11DRV_RetargetGrabs 0002:fixme:xrender:X11DRV_XRender_Finalize Free cached glyphsets
I'm using the latest debian testing "xserver-xorg-video-ati" drivers
fyi, the notebook has a dual boot with winxp, game runs fine in winxp...
Can someone point me in the right direction ? never used wine/cedega ...

Yeah. you need the AMD/ATI binary video drivers to start with.
Do the following:
glxinfo |more
first page look for "direct rendering=yes" on 2nd page of that look for the video driver/card stuff. if it says "mesa/tungsten" you are on the wrong driver.
Go here: Envy
download, install the application and follow the directions on his site to install the proper ATI driver.

My Setup: hardware: Intel P4 3.06GHz 2GB RAM NVidia GeForce4 MX 4000 (128MB RAM) 2GB SWAP (Virtual Mem) 2TB HDD free-space.
Software: Fedora Core 8 - KDE-Live
Problem: The Cedega wrappered version of EvE requires that I install the NVidia Legacy Drivers (from nvidia.com) or it won't go past the splash screen. Why? The MESA drivers that come with OpenGL don't allow direct access to the card (according to the config test). Ok, I get to the login screen and I see garble as if I'm using a videocard out of the early 1990's. Text areas are all white, non-text areas are black, and the background flickers orange.
What I need is a tool to modify the OpenGL settings, or better someone to help this tired man (I've been up 3-days straight with this) to see exactly why this video card works fine running EvE under Windoze, but won't work now under Linux.
PS. Most of my Linux work has been in kernel development, and db-infrustructure, not gaming. I'm not an idiot, really, just had different priorities, till now :)

Update.
System Info the same as above. This time attempting EvE under Wine9.
I get the Splash screen, the the Black screen (same size as splash) where my login screen should be. Have attempted changing from ALSA to OSS and back again, no change. The music plays, but the screen isn't there. Deleted the "cache" directory, as per Windoze problems, didn't help.
I'm systematically going through these forums to see if anything else will help, but they are growing exponentially, and would find it easier to get to response to this one, while I look :)

Wine requires this as well.
Why? Because Mesa 3D is not a driver for your graphics card, it provides basic, suplimental OGL stuff in software. The opensource nv driver that you are probably using (assuming you've never installed the Linux Nvidia stuff) has between zero and no 3D capabilities.
Best bet, slap on the Nvidia drivers (Legacy), yum, apt, synaptic... whatever the Fedora package manager is will probably do it for you. Yes, you do want it to modify your xorg.conf file if prompted. CTRL+ALT+BKSP when done (or just reboot).
Should be smooth sailing. Yeah I know "module nvidia tains kernel"... sod it.

And they YAST system keeps installing the MESA driver. Its getting frustrating. I'd relly love to give Windows on my Laptop the boot so to speak.

I don't know that there is, but Alberto Milone (author of Envy) has expanded the program to Debian, so it might be good to email him and ask if he has any plans to 'expand' it to the other major distros. Interest and feedback on Envy is the only way it will get traction to other distros...and its currently the BEST way to install the binaries on debian/ubuntu with very little hassle for those who aren't comfortable with dependencies and command line skills.

you might try over here: http://suseforums.net/ and look around, also try http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html, I have a nvidia card and the nvidia does a much better job on their drivers from what I've read on various forums.
with the nvidia drivers, I had to point yast to the proper repository to get the drivers installed, so maybe AMD/ATI has something similar.

P.S.: Since I'm french, my english may look quite weird, sorry about that :)
Same for me. "Bad Stuff" error when trying to log into the game with my character.

I gave up in frustration during the beta of the linux client, due to not being able to find the required packages, and went back to using Wine. Given the choice of getting the official client working, or being EVE-less, I was forced to redouble my earlier efforts. I now have a working client under Slackware 12. Need to install the following: pygtk-2.10.6-i686-1js.tgz wxgtk-2.8.5-i486-1kjz.tgz pycairo-1.4.0-i486-1gds.tgz dbus-glib-0.74-i486-1.tgz most of these can be found at http://sotirov-bg.net/slackpack/ and make sure that these official packages are installed: libglade-2.6.1-i486-1.tgz cairo-1.4.12-i486-1.tgz as well as the gtk, gtk2 and python packages (which are normally there already)
I still get some errors in the console, but I didn't crash. 0004: Bad stuff: client ignore setting select events for 0x9004f974 to 1 Unable to create POSIX shm segment: Permission denied sh: lsb_release: command not found
Other comments: Compared to Wine, loading is extremely slow (2mins as opposed to a few seconds) Some of the slowness I imagine is due to the necessity of re-downloading all the information that was cached under the other client, but the time required to get to the login screen could be better. (Especially for me, this means the difference between rescuing my stranded drones after a disconnect or not)

TWO MINUTES???? Something ain't right. Start to login here is a very short amount of time. 20 seconds or so? (haven't put a stop watch on it, but then again, didn't feel any different than a normal eve client (xp) start up.

I timed it out just to be sure: on official client Takes exactly two minutes to go from checking cedega updates to loadGUI, splash appears at 2:05, login screen at 3:40.
Using WINE with premium client, splash screen is instantaneous, complains about no sound at 0:31, and login screen appears at 0:59
previously I was getting my login screen at about 30 seconds.
I'll admit this system is a bit trailing edge but I can no longer blame an empty cache for the slowdown, and most of the time the HDD indicator isn't flashing so it isn't a slow load time from the drive. It seems to be spinning its wheels waiting on something. sempron 2600+, NVidia 6600gt 128, 1.5 gigs ram.
