*puts on white cloak and points to graph board*
So 95% male and 5% female right? I get the feeling this subject might have come up before but it's downtime so lets talk about it just for kicks.
The in game portraits seem to defy these numbers greatly. Not that I show info on every single person I see in local but for the random ones/nessecary ones that I have and even just a glance at some of the character names shows that either CCP are wrong or theres some cross dressers in the community. Or cross gender virtual personality disorder as I like to refer to it as.
So assuming CCP aren't wrong why is the CGVPD outbreak so severe? *strokes beard*
Indeed, if you agree, disagree, suffer from CGVPD or are actually a part of the real 5% of females out there I would love to hear a little something from the depths of your concious mind.
Where to?

Edited by: Kaaln on 01/11/2006 23:25:48 This is going to turn into a 'why do men play women online?' argument real quick. But anyway, that figure sounds about right. I'd imagine that this type of game would'nt appeal to the female gamers in the same way something like World of Warcraft (Blasphemy!) would. -----------------------------------------------

Eve is an MMO much about the toys you have, no house to decorate no socialization (tatical grouping is not socialization!!) as target. That is why is attracts less females than Wow for example.
Woman are usually more interested in people and related stuff, men are more easily attracted by machinnery cannons explosions.
Of course there are exceptions.

That is the answer.
It has come to the point, where I assume everyone I meet is male and refer to everyone as 'he' or 'him' or otherwise masculine, until I am reprimaded or informed otherwise. But all in all, I could really give 2 sh1ts ;P -=^=-

So you are proposing that males pretend to be female in order to seek sexual attention?
Intriguing, however I feel you are wrong on the basis that this explanation would require many of the presumed sufferers to be homosexual. Possible but unlikely I think.

Some people apparently can't grasp the meaning of RP. Well ok, most playing girls don't either but meh, forget them.
I say... oh forget it, and what exactly is there to agree or disagree with? You haven't stated any argument that one could "agree or disagree" with. Not to mention the only other option is being some virtual cross-dresser.

ItĘs not cross dressing for most people, because a lot of people donĘt really identify with their character in a personal way the way some people do.
In online games I do tend to identify with my character enough that I donĘt want to play a female. But in a video game (like Mortal Combat) it doesnĘt bother me in the least to play the female characters.
However I realize that, for some people, they are playing a female character just because they would rather be looking at a womanĘs face than a manĘs.
Now, the men that go around pretending to be womeną Yea, they got problems.

Hmm...I done think I've ever created a character in an MMO who isn't a female toon. What does that say about me?
Well...I dunno to be honest. I certainly don't slip a nurses uniform on at weekends and call myself Dorothy at any rate.
.....apart from once, but then I was a student, drunk, high, and it pleased the girl I was with.

Well, the ammount of female characters is not gonna reflect the amount of female players, by far. I have male and female characters myself, as many other people do. Remember the player CONTROLS the character so the idea of controlling a hot female space pilot is kind of cool to a lot of people.
Personally I like to think my male character is the father of the family and the other 2 characters are his trusty law-abiding son and his rebelled daugther. I like the roleplay and I'm even writing a short story about why this girl left the family corp and wondered into the unknown... |

Ohh I'm all for RP :) But when I start to play roles, I think 'wow I can be a CEO of a major corporation.' Or 'wow I can cause real shifts in diplomatic events' Not 'wow I can be a woman!'.
I really hope I'm not being taken too literal here, I'm filling downtime nothing more. I'm just wondering a reason for it and whilst RP is a reasonable answer I don't agree thats the majority of it. I think I'm mainly amused by it. Does it give you an easier social acceptance or a percieved increased confidence or is it just fun to have boobs? These are the questions that trouble my mind tonight ladies and gentlemen.

Hey, i actually said it's probably the minority. Oh and roleplaying, is not what you described up there. In some way i guess people could define it as cross dressing, yet it's not, as when i talk out of character it's immediately clear i am not, well, that person that talks in local or in special channels. Interesting topic tho, although brought up i dunno how many times already... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I be needin' some sig love. *sigh* |

I usually have male players in MMO's, i got power of 2 offer back in jan/feb and thought id try the new bloodlines and might as well try something different and make a female character. doesn't make any difference while playing EvE, not like your running around in a world like WoW or guild wars where you can stare at its arse all day long.
One thought tho, why doesn't Battlefield series ever have the option for female characters.

I have to agree, its a game what does it metter if you're a male or a female, we all pay to play the game not to try and pick up partners as there are other sites for that, we're here to enjoy playing the great game that is EVE, lets just hope they don't make another game called ADAM :P
But seriously what should it matter what gender you are in RL :) ---

Yeh, I figured it might have been discussed before but who cares. And yeah I know the RP is deeper than that, especially in this game. Maybe your right, and someone also commented about identifying with your character. For me I would usually always identify with the character in some way and therefore some ignorance on my part may be present; Not everyone is gonna identify, and for the ones who don't identify whatsoever it could just be a random choice whether they choose male or female.
And for people asking why this matters, it doesn't, it won't, I'm bored and it's taken my interest for this period of time, if that's okay with you i'd like to discuss it, preferrably without pointless replies that only waste the time of people who actually want to contribute. Don't care? Don't post..

Selecting a character of different gender to yourself in RL in an MMORPG is a 'disorder'?
I guess the fact I have male and female characters makes me mentally unbalanced then...

This game can easily bring in more females. Here is how you do it.
#1 Give customizable options to ships and avatars #2 Give avatars the ability to walk around in station. Similiar to all other MMORPG. A real human that you can play, rather than a ship. #3 Create SIMS like avatar, you can watch your avatar grow with experinces.
This will create whole new set of skills for veterans to play with. Can you imagine adding another 6 mths worth of skills for customizations and SIMs like avatar
Don't build games for girls, instead build games for Gamers. Female PC Gamers will play--If it is fun.

On this game I believe the demographic.
In my experience on other games it is not the case. On EQ2 for example probably about 60% of the people I have met in almost 2 years of playing are females in RL. (Confirmed by voice, meeting, etc). I just think that this game does not appeal to the average female.

It is a mistake to believe that a guy with a female character is *** (like I see many implying). That will be like saying anybody who ever played Tomb Raider is ***. Next people are going to say that all amar really want to enslave other people in RL?... and all people with un-human characters in WOW are really... MONSTERS?.. OGM!
But why it is so important anyways? Will you react different to a real girl player? Wanna ask her out of something? There are dating sites for that u know.... |
