Edited by: Soporo on 04/11/2006 22:19:16 Edited by: Soporo on 04/11/2006 22:16:10 I'm a male, so I use male charracters.
Most people are aware of the big gender disparity in most online games, this one can't be that much different. So I will assume the vast majority of female toons are either ***, very young, or just flaky...or just Achura .
The REASON why ?
Some dude said it best in another post, but I will add:
No cellphones. Not enough pink or purple anywhere. No frilly, shiny, cute fru fru's. It's PvP centric/confrontational/mean and heartless. No Unicorns. No Cat costumes. No way to dance.
There IS a lot of shopping though...
The one chick I KNOW who does play EVE, is very competent and smart, I think the depth of the game drew her.

Well I'm one of the 5% female players. I play as a female but I've never had any problems from anyone (but I've only been playing a month or so). In fact, I've found everyone to be the opposite of the stereotypical "ZOMG a ch1x0r, want 2 cyber lolz" that seem to appear alot in many other games (World of Warcraft being the most obvious example).
Basically I don't think anyone really cares if I'm a girl or not.

I tell Ini quite often to try that theory out on any game twelve year olds love to play. (Counter-Strike being a great example), but I guess when we're both busy shooting people, who has the time?
For me it's simple, I'm male, I'll usually make an avatar that looks a little like me because it gives me that little feeling of the hero being myself. EVE is the exception as looks dictate your attributes, so now I look somewhat like a Confucian philosopher on a meth high.
For a set of practical reasons why there is a male/female imbalance, to me:
1. It's space. "Space is for GEEKS" (Direct quote). Girls tend to be more social and pack orientated creatures, and so are more likely to follow trend and popular opinion. I don't have any definitive evidence of this, just growing up and through school as proof. Guys generally have less problems taking on individualistic hobbies which don't involve OMFG T3H OC.
2. It's a computer game, "Games are for GEEKS!" (Direct quote). This is luckily less true by the day as computers and such become more widely used and accepted. Most of the girls I know now play *some form* of game, but most much prefer the casual-gamer approach of a few flash based games, dance mats and so forth, rather than slogging through Half-Life 2 or calculating just how far our missiles will travel with duration*velocity. Not that both aren't fun, but the amount of "harder" gamers who are male seem significantly larger than the female set I know. I think this is also a social thing, and as games go from "Eww geek" to "Oooh fun" we should see some more balance in the digital universe.
3. Economics? Maths? Needing to sit in front of the computer a fair time to get anywhere? All these things are socially frowned upon, in general. Who has time for hours of EVE a night when you need to watch Big Brother tonight or tomorrow you'll have no one to talk to? Ever tried picking up chicks at the bar when being honest about what you want to/are studying at Uni? Theoretical physics, not so much of a babe magnet.
Please note, all of these are GENERALISATIONS. Of course there will be a group of girls who have no problem being alone, a group of girls who could out-think, out-code, out-snipe me any day of the week, a group of girls who'll think physics is awesome. Of course, there is also a large chunk of males who have exactly the same pack-led mentality, but generally, it's worse on the female side.
Or so I find.
It'd be interesting to hear any confliction observations.
As for players posing as females, why would I or should I care? They both get the same level of respect and courtesy from me, always.

The average EVE player is older and many of the younger players are probably more mature than in other games, too, because the game is rather complex. They can behave like adults, (if they want to ^^)
One of the most entertaining people on our TS is a girl/woman, really refreshing. It's a really relaxed athmosphere, but most of our guys are also no kiddies anymore. The players I've been playing with in EVE range from 17 to 55. Most well over 20, many over 30 like myself. Several have kids themselves. -------------------------- Post with your main !!!111 |

I like the way my spaceship looks from the back.
WoW style games annoy me. I aint lookin at some dude's rear end for hours. And having a 90 pound female swinging a 20 pound axe around like a ginsu knife breaks the immersion, as does having her tank as well as a male while wearing an armor plated version of Victoria's Secret.
How can an armor plated bra and thong panty set have the same armor value as a head to toe set of plate? And how do you make a dainty purse-sized shield that has the same AC as a 7 foot tall Roman Legion style bronze shield that looks like it weighs about 40 pounds?
Even worse is those games where the weapon cusomizes itself for the user.
So you got the 90 pound female wielding what looks like a 5 pound bastard sword, but when you give the same sword to a male it looks like the giant claymore from Conan the Barbarian.
Or how bout those FPS games where everybody plays a female because it gives you a smaller hitbox. I used to play Planetside, everybody used a female avatar because they were harder to hit.
Here at least a battleship doesn't turn pink and get %50 smaller signature radius when a female jumps in.

In PS, the females skins warped more. Female skins in other FPS are simply smaller targets which the hitbox surrounds. The hitboxes remain the same size.
As an example;
Hitboxes in ET
Otherwise peeps would make one pixel skins. ;)

Edited by: Drucialla on 05/11/2006 03:30:11 Interesting stuff said here. I do, however, question the statistics. According to EvE this account will show as a male account, since my brother set it up for me and pays monthly.
Meantime I am female, always have been lol, and no doubt that will remain the case :)
I did find, historically speaking, that being a female in MMO games is an advantage, in UO and SWG I distinctly felt that I was treated differently and better for being female, much less aggression. In SWG particularly tho, I made my avatar look as much like me as possible, and I did have some stalkers, hence the 'brutish' one I have now :)
I know many females in this game, and I don't believe the 5% figure at all. I would guess it's more like 15% but thats just my opinion.
Dru, aka Shian in SWG and thats my real name lol
Edit - if it has alchohol in it I like it..but don't tell anyone

Edited by: Sakura Nihil on 05/11/2006 07:24:59 To be honest, I don't care what gender you are - yes, I find it interesting to find a rival pirate or PvPer to be a woman from time to time, but its along the lines of "Oh really? That's cool - so anyway, who you blow up today? A T2 fitted rax, nice !".
I do my utmost to respect other players for their skills and not their sex, and I've found almost everyone I've worked with in my time here to also be pretty mature about it. Oh, and if anyone doubts that girls PvP, let's just say I've worked with some very skilled women over the years who could still kick my ass .
edit: Quick afterthought - one thing I have noticed in general is that distribution is relative to age in the game. I seem to encounter a lot of newbie females that tend not to stick around for the long haul, contributing to a somewhat balanced, initial population that grows more male-dominated as time progresses. My take on it at least, I wonder if any one else has seen this in their experience.

To be honest this was the first mmorpg i played, and the concept that the toon i choose is supposed to represent me actually didnt occur to me. I simply chose an avatar, a toon that carries out my orders in this world. And i wanted my avatar to look pretty, cause i see it as a seperate entity of me. So naturally i chose the opposite gender(males never are, and never will be pretty, its some silly idea nature put into womans heads) ... it just seemed somehow strange to play around with a male toon.
I guess it comes down to wether you think of this as an ego shooter, meaning you actually are your toon, or wether you think of yourself and your toon as seperate stuff and your toon only carrying out your orders. Oh and then there are the roleplayers too, they can do all kinds of weird stuff i guess.
P.S. If people actually think of your toon as yourself, or roleplay it, why dont people show any self preservation? And how do people deal with alts and them knowing anything that the main does? Do guys really think controlling a female is weirder than controlling several males that share intimate knowledge of each others thoughts? Im really confused here so help me out will ya .

Edited by: Kish Lewis on 05/11/2006 11:27:33 Female gamer here! Been playing mmo's for 10 years or so now. My real life boyfriend and I are both gamers, although we do have different goals in games we play. I do like the social interaction to an extent, but I like having alot of different things to do in a game rather than kill X or deliver Y repeatedly. I think thats where the community really comes into play to keep some linear games from becoming completely boring in a week.
Anyways, Im new here, Trying out EVE with the free trial, and I must say I am very interested in learning more and more *nod*
There's some really scary people out there on the net and in games, both female and male, but for the most part, chick gamers are still the minority and there's more of us than you think, and alot of us females that enjoy gameplay, strategy and stuff like pvp! RAR.
Ok its 6am. Zzzzz.

You are so right ;) The old Chain Mail-Bikini-Problem, found in every fantasy-rpg since the early eighties and nowadays, fully digital in every MMORPG :)Ok, a fantasy game has not to be realistic because it's fantasy, but it still must be logical. But concerning female charakters all game designers tend to follow this maxim:
optic > logic
Who wants to look at a 1,95m-120kg woman? So most female characters are slim, what gives them the smaller wire-frame-model. Ok, this is compensated by the big *******, but just marginal. So most players choose the size of their characters propotional to the charakters armor. So do I. Yes, I am a crossdresser. Does this make me a pervert? Am I ******* if I play a female caster?
And in Eve? In Eve it is even more regardless for me if a character is male or female, because I don't roleplay in Eve (and I don't roleplay in other MMORPGs) The only important point is:
To pod or not to pod ;)
And at all those "girlsdontplayevebecausetheyarestupid"-guys: I play Eve for 2 Month now and I had the impression, that most players in Eve are more intelligent and mature than in Guild Wars, Counter Strike and other games, I played before. But you show me again: I am fallible ;)
Edit: Why is the word for homosexual females and female parts of a body abusive? I don't get it ..

Originally by: Vauko Why is there only 5% of women playing EVE? Pfft, I thought this was fairly evident from the get go, but I'll make a top 10 list why women dont play EVE.
1) You cant dress up your avatar's in frilly dresses * But you can take a freakish long time choosing just the right light...
2) There is no marriage's in EVE * Yes... and thank you for that... So many men, so little time - how can I choose?
3) They have no emote which allows you to spin circles so fast that you drop to your knees laughing in bed of flowers... * I presume it is a WoW reference, so I fail to get it...
4) This game requires you to think in order to be successful, and since there's no marriages women are on their own and therefore incapable of surviving * Oh... ok. So that is why some of my opponents think that the (male) players I play with are my RL boyfriend(s) and/or husbond?
5) This game revolves around exploration and money, I've personally never heard of a female explorer, and we all know what women are like with money... * OK, I give you that. I use ISK. Or... actually I usually give them to my handsome CEO, who uses them, since I cannot be arsed to use them, except to buy more ships for PVP... and I have plenty.
6) Theres no skill to train revolving around cooking and cleaning which confuses women * Oh, yes there is - it is called "Training men 101" but is only available to RL females.
7) This game, while amazing, Doesn't seem to add up to the fabled "Sims" or "Mario Party" * Haven't played them. This is my first online game and I love it.
8) There's not enough shinny objects * Oh? I loooove my ships... cannot get enough of them.
9) Women have absolutely no taste in videogames which means they will automatically reject the game after they realize this game named "EVE" isnt revolving around an empowered female with an enchanting storyline. * Ooooooh...kay... Wanna say that at about 5 km range from my Stiletto?
10) There's not enough room in most kitchen's for a computer. * I play on a laptop and order from the local pizzaparlor when I do long PVP nights.
Now you might ask yourself, wow, this kids got some serious issues, however this post was meant for 2 things helping men understand why women dont play EVE, and secondly to see if there truly is more then 5% of women playing. Because I guarentee any woman (that can read at least) who views this post, might have some stern objections..
* Your reality check is in the mail. Oh, no, that would require you to actually have a RL with mail and all?
Btw, I'll be in empire forever... for the women that do read this will most likely tear me a new one...

I'm probably semi-uniquely qualified to address this issue, as I used to be guy, but fortunately have cured this affliction with regular doses of estrogen, judiciously-applied makeup, and carefully chosen clothing.
The fact is that you can LOOK like anyone you want, but you'll never really change who you are inside. It took me the first 35 years of my life, coming of age as a tattooed, black leather-clad, punk rocker, to come to this understanding, but I share it with you all because it directly applies to this discussion.
The fact is that some of the stereotypes do have some validity, or they wouldn't be stereotypes in the first place. Women do tend to be more prone to working together toward common goals whereas men tend to be more independent and prone to working solo. Men also tend to resort to violence to accomplish their goals much more quickly than women do. And, let's be honest, men generally like blowing stuff up more than women do.
So it's not really surprising to me that men make up 95% of the playerbase, but it is surprising how many men choose to play female characters in these games, especially considering the level of homo/transphobia one often finds in MMOG's. I just think it's really interesting how so many men who, no doubt, would never be caught crossdressing or behaving like women in any way in RL, choose a female avatar even in a game like EVE where the character is never even shown below the shoulders.
And oh yeah, Teamspeak or Ventrilio won't reveal every man playing a female character...some women actually do sound like men in RL.
Gender Rule #1: Assume NOTHING!
Gender Rule #2: When in doubt, refer to Rule #1. My Eve Blog: Just a Girl and Her Battlecruiser http://justagirlandherthorax.blogspot.com |
