Meh,
a bit of research (at least use that new-fangled search button upper right hand side, it's great!!!!11!!) could help in avoiding some of the embarassments. I'm sure CCP does a LOT of research before naming ships.
That search also goes through the items database, so existing ship names (maybe excluding faction ships) would be found. Also, posts further above in this thread with the same names already mentioned will be found.
Oh and while I'm waffling about research: If wikipedia isn't lying there is indeed a Cerberus snake.
It's really easy finding out this stuff, why do so few people bother these days?
Oh: Personal opinion on ship names: While "Roc" is impressive, I'd reserve it for future capital or tech 2 ships.
I've seen a few very good suggestions for the Minmatar and Amarr tier-3 battleships (namely, Hurricaine or even Maelstrom, and Annihilation, or Purgatory) but somehow none of the Caldari and Gallenteans "click".
Of course, Gallenteans appear just random to me so whatever!
Ravens aren't even very *big* birds. Eagles and harpies (yes that is a bird, check wikipedia) are far bigger. Condor, maybe?
Keep them rolling, this is very interesting.

I was wondering if the irony was intended. Purgatory is also a citadel torp.
Let's just say this is a good demonstration of what I meant by "embarassment".

Look, the Amarr one has to begin with A, and the Minmatar one with T, otherwise it just doesnt fit.
Minmatar - Tornado is a bit corny, but its the name that fits. Amarr - Agamemnon is more original than Annihilator and would fit with ancient mythology.

While it is indeed easy to find out this stuff, I can't help but notice that the cerberus snake thing is a blank entry. Now note that wikipedia is a people driven thing: anyone can put info there ( you could make a blueberry spacecake chocolate muffin entry if you wanted ). My guess is someone related cerberus to a snake since the cerberus from the mythology has snake parts on his body.
As for the search function ... it's borked, doesn't work that well really.
Still, I must agree that we should keep the thingies rolling here :P. ---------------------------------------------------- New sig in the making ... be patient ... PATIENCE !!! |

it is fun coming up with these so here are some more suggestions
Caldari : fer-de-lance ( a homage to Elite ) and in keeping with nasty animal theme of the other Caldari BS Fer_de_lance
Minmatar : Tsunami
Gallente : Ares ( Greek god of war )
Amarr : The Hand of God (says it all really )

Agreed on the general Wikipedia mistrust. There is however a bit of peer review going on, the same reason why Linux isn't just a bunch of viri and trojans. Further backing up the Wikipedia entries are some google searches.
Nonetheless, it's a damn obscure snake. Same with the harpy really, maybe: Just given the name you'd probably associate it more to the mythical reference. So I retract this, let's not count either as a very prominent animal reference and stick with mythical for tech 2.

Well it does find the Items Database entries. Sure didn't use it myself for Condors *ouch*.
Tornado, Torrent and Tsunami are good, too. Abomination is good. Harrier is the first Caldari one I like.
Agamemnon, I'm doubtful about using ancient people names. Same goes for more mythical references like Icarus, Pegasus, Dragon, Hydra, Banshee, Siren.
Funny isn't it, how it is easiest to agree on the ROLE of the Caldari battle (Railboat) and hardest to decide on its name.
All right, Gallente. Phobos, nice, but I believe there may be an elite cruiser somewhere in the game named like that already based on the Thorax (but not finished). Aether is nice. Still can't come up with anything nice myself.

there are indeed some obscure references to the "Phobos". It being a pink Thorax ( wrong in so many ways !! ).
I think Charybdis really could be a nice name for the Gallente one, but that's just my opinion. ---------------------------------------------------- New sig in the making ... be patient ... PATIENCE !!! |

Gallente : Ares ( Greek god of war )
Uhh a little too similar to another ship name already in game don't you think?
Caldari: Whoever suggested the Roc I think they were onto a winner, it just seems appropriate for the top caldari battleship.
Gallente: Gigantes (greek origins, supposedly the footsoldiers of the Titans in the war with the Olympians) although I'm not a huge fan of that name.
Otherwise maybe something like the Triton?
Minnies: I think Maelstrom does fit them well.
Amarr: Lots of good suggestions, personally I wouldn't mind something like Revelation.
edit: one of the names is actually in the game.

Amarr: Abaddon, Apollyon, Annihilation
Caldari: Viper, Diamondback, Rattler or sticking with bird names: Rail, Snipe, Tit
Gallente: Minotaur, Orion, Prometheus, Romulus
Minmatar: Torrent, Tornado, Firestorm, Rampage

More thinking. Gallente - "Hyperion", because a) he was a titan and b) the name sounds bad-ass. Matari either Maelstrom or Maestral sound good. Caldari I think "Roc" is probably a pretty good one, although "Peregrine" isn't a bad shout either (although it's probably more suited to a smaller ship). Other possibles here include Cardinal and Martlet, both of which I think would be pretty reasonable. Amarr I'm not sure on - "Annihilation" kinda fits the BS theme but I'm not sure it's a great ship name. "Emperor" and "Deity" are both kinda neat but I'm not sure they're really suitable. "Apostle" would be a great one too but only if Amarr religion includes a similar reference, which I'm not sure it does. Personally I think the best name would be "Genocide", because it kinda captures the Amarrian approach to conflict.
