Any1 got a good alternative for FRAPS? Coz the latest version (2.6.0) only record 30 seconds... And once you have installed the latest version you cant downgrade to an older version that doesnt have the time limit.

This thread is way old but i only jusy saw it so better late than never. Also theese tips really only imply to combat vids, not the Eve promo type vids.
1) Make a video you and your friends will enjoy. Dont try to impress everyone in EVE coz theres just too many peeps out there who are gonna be so far detached from the content your showing it will be almost impossible for them to enjoy it, unless its a really arty farty vid and or youve somehow got ******* in it.
2) Choose your music well. Do not be afraid to try something new. Yes you can take the easy route and use a dramatic bit of cheesy clssical music from the latest summer blockbuster or maybee a linkin park track. But imo its best to try something new. Nothing worse than 12 minuites of thrash metal to get you all fired up, and at the same time almost falling asleep because nothing has exploded in ages.
3) There are 3 types of movies. I make combat movies, normally a mixture of Fleet battles Ganks and small rucks, which normally takes me only 1 night to complete. Then there are wonderfull pieces of brilliance like leafos movies, with stunning visuals stories and great effects, normally alot of time and effort put in, in real movie terms it would be like lord of the rings and mine would be Jackass or something :P but both imo are fun and good to watch. Then theres the third type. Which is pretty much peeps trying to emulate a movie trailer to the latest jerry brockhiemer film, 6 minuits that make u wanna go listen to phil collins albums and drown in a bath of beans, a very low explosions per minuit ratio and normaly with some of the afor mention obvious music choices.
4) DONT OVER USE stander transitions, unless its STAR WIPE, can never have too many star wipes :P
5) start with windows movie maker, its simple and will get u used to handling multiple clips and structuring your scenes well.

Sweeping Panoramic Shots
These are actually quite difficult to pull off, since the EVE engine requires you to be looking at something in space, rather than picking your point and shooting from it. To remedy this, try using cargo cans. Just drop them off at the point you want to shoot from, then whilst looking at the can right-click and twist the camera all the way round. Make sure you don't veer too far off the x/y axis, since the camera will follow a curve rather than a straight line as you drag the mouse.
The 'S' in SFX
Don't go over the top with visual enhancers like filters, lens flare etc. Use them sparingly and use them in the correct manner. If used properly they can enhance a scenes cinematic value, used too often and you can end up with a Lucas-esque slush of searing visuals that can dull the eyes. Special Effects aren't special if they're used all the time!
Check Your Spelling!
There is absolutely nothing worse than having text that is either unreadable, or rife with terrible spelling and grammatical errors. It immediately snaps the user away from whatever immersion has been achieve prior, and makes the director look plain silly. Whatever editor you're using to make your film, just copy-paste the text into MS Word and back again to iron out the crinkles. Whether it's UK or US spelling doesn't matter, as long as it's standardised.

MOST IMPORTANT THING *MUSIC MUSIC MUSIC*
Your Soundtrack can MAKE or Break your VIDEO. I have seen the mostr kick ass videos with the lamest soundtrack. You will not impress everyone, and I am sure many who saw a video I despised, loved the SoundTrack and the video. but an earlier post suggested you to go for something you and your friends will like, dont worry bout what we think.

I'm considering working on a fleet-style video that's story-driven....but the work it'd take to accomplish it would be a bit much. v.v Would anyone be interested in helping?
On the side: I'm probably going to have to work on getting my PC working more stable before I can create EVE videos... :( (x800xt video card from sapphire keeps crashing)

Is there a way to record via hardware instead of fraps. I would like to get less of a fps cut when recording.
Could a video capture card work and if so could I use a video capture card that outputs to firewire to a firewire harddrive?
Also could a video capture card record anything on my screen?

You'd need two computers. One running eve with a video card with a S-video output, conected to the second computer with a capture card recording. That can record anything on screen.
You could set fraps to record to that firewall harddrive but i dont know if that would make it better or worse tbh. A seperate internal hard drive from the one you have windows and eve on however works wonders.

I've used Adobe Premier, but after trying Adobe After Effects I wouldn't touch Premier with a 20 foot pole. Every effect you apply, from simple filters to time distortions (making some parts of a clip faster and others slower) can be edited by expanding a couple sublayers. Sections of your video can be previewed exactly as it will look in the final render on the fly with the RAM Preview option. Every filter you can find in Photoshop is in After Effects, along with a whole host of others. Dozens of text effects are pre-made for you, just pop one onto a text layer, fiddle around with the settings a bit and you've got cinema quality text effects with about 5 minutes of work. Lots of encoding options too. _____________________________________

When I fraps (2.6.4) with EVE my framerate drop to the selected frames in Fraps, is this the intended behavior? If so then frapsing seriously hinders my pvp ability as anything below 60 fps feels sluggish and non-responsive (imo).
I have a 3GHz P4, 1GB DDR, Radeon 9800 Pro, 80GB for EVE and 2x 80GB in RAID0 for fraps.

With 2.6.4 you can set fraps to record up to 60fps, if you still drop below that when recording its because your system cant keep up, which would be perfectly normal heh.

Well it seems like the age of trying to figure who is shooting who and what that ships color really look like is coming to an end (well its been dead for awhile already). This is what I do and use for making HDTV movies (yes, there is a few non-realeased).
Ok here goes:
Game resolution suggestion: Set EVE to run in 1280x720 (HDTV) or x1080 (even better HDTV). That will get you proper Widescreen and work with the below settings. NOTE: EVE will reset to 1280x768 everytime you restart so remember to change back to x720 at login screen the next time you load EVE!
FRAPS: 2.6.4 (or higher) No Cursus: Checked! No Sync: NOT CHECKED! Full-size 29.97 FPS
Now that you have set that up (Coz you will follow my advise right? ) make some test runs with fraps to see that you get what you want.
It looks ok? Nice, please continue.
Workspace: Start new project --> Custom --> Fram size: 1280x720 (or x1080 if you can make that work with fraps and your compu) Pixel Aspect: Square Pixels (1.0) (and if you like check "scale clips...")
That will get a exactly sized workspace, no cutting of edges. If you dont have dual screens or a disturbingly high resolution on your screen you will not be able to see the entire clip in preview window. It will be "scaled down" making it look kinda crappy.
Fear not though since it will not look like that when rendered. If you want to preview at correct resolution, choose 100% in the preview window and just move around using the scroll-bars to look at a specific part of the screen at correct resolution.
Rendering options: File --> Export --> Adobe Media Encoder Preset: WM9 720 30p Change: Average Video bitrate to: 2000 (or keep at 5000 for best ever resolution/bigger file) Peak Video Bitrate: What ever that default value is Audio Format: 128kb, 44Khz, 2 Channel 24-bit, CBR
NOTE: If you can have x1080 be sure to set to render in that resoltion as well! Save as Render profile as "EVE WM9 720 30p" (or something)
That should give you some nice results. Make small test files, 8 seconds or so to test.
Cheers, LOWA

How is it possible to increase the quality on video-captures when they are recorded? I really can't get rid of the blurryness (the very same lack of quality that most of the videos posted on "the scene" has got).
I can run FRAPS pretty smooth on my computer (only the FPS decreasion when recording), but as there are no quality settings in FRAPS. How can i get this fixed? (This is when outputing in raw AVI format (no decoding))

When i tried encoding my movie with Premiere, it was so blocky and jerky, that the credits weren't readable. However, if you export your vid as an unencoded stream, then use virtual dub to compress, it will come out real nice.

Edited by: RacerX1 on 14/12/2005 04:50:07 alright..so I've decided to take my turn at this vid makin stuff..have no problems with fraps no problems encoding and compressing...my problem lies within the resolution...
my monitor is 1280x1024 native...people really seems to have a problem with this at half res for movies, 640x512 isn't that nice lookin fullscreen, blurry blurry blurry...
now if I play in 1024x768 windowed I can get a very nice picture for fraps, great for vids, but can't play it full screen cause is giantic..so here in lies the problem..
who wants to only play in 1024x768 windowed? love to know what some of the more experienced guys do with res and tricks for clarity in the end...are all you movie makers that produce the nice full screen vids have 1024x768 native resoultions?

Try HuffyUV lossless export for pre-encode stages (i.e. from premiere really), then encode with Windows Media encoder or virtual dub (or your fav ATI beta encoder perhaps..)
For resolutions, if you're not happy with 1280 x1024 speeds, try speeding up your footage in the video to keep the FPS close to 30 (or even higher!). Either that, or perhaps 1280 * 720 or one of those widescreen formats, those look really good.
And finally, everyone here who's tried Permiere, should also try After Effects, because the timeline support for your filters is just so much more powerful. On top of that , it makes quite a good audio mixer, can't go wrong really :) -=-=-=-==-=--=-=-=--=-=--==-=--¼=-==--=-=-=--==-=--=-=-=-=-=-==-=-

i recently downloaded the latest version of fraps 2.7.2. it installs fine but when i try to load it, nothing happens. the cursor turns to an hour glass then back to normal, if i look in the process list and try it again, fraps.exe appears for a second or so and then disapears without showing anything on my screen.
Anyone had any similar experiences?

I'm a big rookie but spent the night and day testing res and checking file size after encoding. I also got a native 1280*1024 screen and yeah 640*512 aint really good in full screen.
I read and followed the advices given in this thread and on eve-videos chan. I'll try to use a game res of 1280*800,not as much playable as 1280*1024 but it's quite good, then comes the issue: with a bitrate of 2100, quality doesnt follow and I had to make it to 5000, but here comes another issue: file size.
32sec of vid at this res and bitrate with a classic audio track, once encoded got a size of 18Mo, so it's a bit too much either for upload or download. Gonna have to check at different bitrates between 2100 and 5000 I guess.
edit: some spelling
