I will start updating the guide soon so its more up to date and complete.
To start off however this is a quick visual guide to starting a project in premiere pro and then compressing it. Ive had to guide people thru this too many times so here it is in picture form :P. >>> Project settings can NOT be changed after starting, make sure these settings are correct <<<
Starting a project When you start a new project click on the Custom tab at the top to reach this screen. Switch to Video for Windows, put in the correct resolution (the res of your fraps) and select Square Pixels as indicated in the picture.
Compressing:
Follow the pictures for this, its pretty straight forward and when your done you can save the settings for later.
Select the adobe media encoder
General Section
Video Section
Audio Section
Expand the Metadate section and edit the fields
Then add the data
Select Highbandwidth 3 in the audiences section
Audiences section
The only part you may have to change is in the auidence section. Make sure the resolution is the same as your fraps and as how you started the project. The average bit rate at the bottom controls the quality, if your video res starts with 1280 x *** go with 3000 bit rate up to about 3500 if needed, 1024 x *** can go down to about 2500 bitrate. Experiment with a fast moving clip of video to test this.

i tried it al but still the same result. however if i try to record other games like call of duty at 1600x1200 it works perfectly.
check this out: 1600x1200 sample movie this is what i get when i record at 1600x1200 half size 60 fps.
any idea how i can fix this?

I'm trying to make a video right now but can't seem to get the quality of the encoded movie to come out with good resolution.
I'm using Windows Movie Maker, and the fraps I've recorded are high res.
During encoding, the resolution is downgraded to 640 x 480 when I select "Video for local playback (2.1 Mbps)." This seems to be the highest quality option I can choose. The final movie is only 120 MB for a 8-9 minute movie with a few gigs of fraps in it.
What is everyone using to make 500 MB+ movies with a res similar to the original fraps?
Thanks to any who might answer. |

Guys,
Fraps has a widescreen resolution limit of 1280 x 720 and a 4:3 limit of 1152 x 864. Any resolutions above that (when recording at full screen) will half the image, which is where you are getting the blurryness from.
With regards to encoding, whatever you choose to encode with, you will get a better result if you encode to the SAME resolution that you recorded at. eg;
Eve resolution 1152 x 864, Fraps set to full screen, Encode set to 1152 x 864. Eve resolution 1280 x 720, Fraps set to full screen, Encode set to 1280 x 720.
Stedanko, I think most people are using Adobe Prem Pro for encoding/editing etc.
Hope this helps,
AK.

yea i get that, but when i record other games, the quality is just fine. in Call of Duty it doesnt make a differance at which reso i record.

1280x768 (not 720) is the maximum recording limit, at least for FRAPS v. 2.7.1. Why it says otherwise, I'm not sure (1280x768 actually records less pixels than 1152x864) I started recording in x768, even though I know x720 is a standard format, because switching EVE back to x720 everytime it loaded was getting annoying.

Something i've found which may be helpful to others:
Using a Geforce 6800 the 7.7.3.0 driver combined with fraps 2.5.4 looks perfect, but when I updated my driver I got a horrible 'twinkling' effect in all my fraps.
Rolled it back and I'm happy now ----------

Loxy's awsome guide dosen't apply anymore since they remade the whole start project feature. There are no wmv compression codec presets.

Just like to say I followed Lowa's intstructions perfectly, and then just sped up my video to 200-250%. It looks brilliant, and it makes Eve look like 60+ FPS.
Thanks everyone for your tips! I finally understand Premeire :)

Anyone know how to convert from FRAPS codec to something more standard/open, like normal AVI or MPG? I prefer to edit video on my Mac in Final Cut Pro, but FRAPS is a proprietary codec and they only have the windows version of the codec written... ----- CEO, Astrum Contract Services Group

Dump the files into something like VirtualDub and export / Save the file fully uncompressed into a new AVI file (use whatever codec you like) - then import to your Mac for editing.
Should do the trick.

Edited by: niroshido on 15/11/2006 20:51:20 one thing that i want to know how to do is: how do u make the animated 'feature presentation by _~place random name generator here~' you know the feature at the start saying who made the video, its like a movie scene in itself, i tried it myself using photoshop CS2 but im a confessed noob at using the animation tools there, basically what id like to see is an animation like 'niroshido presents' and the each word is highlighted individually as a light source moves its way from left to right behind the text or has an animated fire is working its way up the screen
any ideas?? cause i do know there is people here that have done things related to it already

Adobe After Effects will do all that, and more, but takes time to learn the basics.
I'm sure people could help you do this, but at a cost. Maybe make a fresh post in the main video forum, or visit the Eve-Videos IGC about this. However, if you are going to be making a lot of videos, purchasing a 'dummies guide' would be a good course of action and you would get more satisfaction from creating any complex title work yourself...

Ok i have a big problem, We are soon to be starting war and after already having some spectacular figths i wanna start creating videos from the fraps i take. Only problem is that all of my footage has been 100% ruined and unusable, i run eve at 1280 X 1024 and no matter if i fraps at half size, full size, 25fps , 60 fps , sound or no sound it comes out all fuzzy and uggly. It annoy's me because i see videos like damige's and there pristine and perfect view, how do they do it and i'm stuck with fuzzy ugly duckling.

I can only guess you use a single-core processor and currently with version 2.8.1 of Fraps you have a widescreen limit of 1280 x 800 and a 4:3 limit of 1152 x 864. Anything higher will halve the resolution.
This information is held in the Q & A section of FRAPS.
FYI, DaMiGe tends to Fraps his footage at 1152 x 864.
Hope this helps,
AK.
