"Doing something just "because it would be cool/neat/awesome" is always a bad idea and will come back to bite you later"
For the most people who playing EVE, like me, I assume, are fans of spaceships and science fantasy. We quit WOW for this game, not for the EVE saves time, not for the EVE get better reality in design, not for the EVE has heavy punishment in combats.
We are coming for spaceships with advanced equipments(machines), the lasers, the colorful and/or powerful weapons, and then, drive these powerful machines to fight, maybe with players, maybe with computers.
We are coming to build our small sites, cities, colonies in the great universe. Maybe come with factories but not purely factories.
We are coming to explore, to contact with the aliens and unknown creatures and phenomenon.
Also, as a feature of almost all mmo games, we would like to fight as guilds, fight for the countries, and get glories for the fights we made.
Maybe they are just simple phrases, but I worry if you just forget it in the long period of developing EVE, forget what originally motivated the players come to the game. It's a really long-lived mmo game, but I could not say it is a very good game still. What the game need is more players, not those bots in arvsa, ummoka and irju, but those real players who can only play 2 to 5 hours each day.
There are many things to do to attract more real players, make the new players easier to survive and get better user interfaces. There should be 10 more times as the players now who would like to play a spaceship game, could adapt to the rules of EVE because they would not be more stupid than those noobs you can find all around.
Back to the topic, would anybody come to the EVE because it gets a nice role play feature? Maybe it would satisfy some old players, but I bet a simple but different ship skin would be 10 times more attractive than a delicate human model.
You put the effort at a wrong direction CCP. Maybe it's too late to roll back but still better than unrealized.
New features, but no walk in station.

The only reason Eve exists is because someone thought it'd be cool, neat, and awesome not to make another crapfest of a generic MMO to compete with the other lame offerings of those dark times.

They're committed to the WiS now. There's too much money and time sunk into it, not to mention that some very senior people in CCP have nailed their colours to the Incarna mast.
The best we can hope for now is that they'll pull back some of the dev resources that were being sunk into the pit, and apply them to spaceships EVE for a while.
Malcanis' Law: Whenever a mechanics change is proposed on behalf of "new players", that change is always to the overwhelming advantage of richer, older players. |

If EVE is ever going to be the immersive SciFi world that you describe then having an avatar is necessary. The current shape of Incarna is early development so nothing much to do yet and the NeX store is a rushed and damaging mess.
Having said this, Incarna has vast potential and paying more cash for an enhanced experience is fine by my as long as the current experience doesn't get broken (CCP made mistakes here with forced CQ and removal of ship spinning).
I'm personally looking forward to a time when the appropriate development resources go back to working on EVE, FIS and Incarna both.

Yes, they did rather mess up their schedule/over extend/etc. Still hoping for things to get back into shape and am enjoying most of the game as it stands for now.

Why do people start threads like this? Do they just like to hear themselves talk or are they so high on themselves that they think "Someone from CCP will read my post and actually follow through with my ridiculous demands or requests?".
"Oh hai guys. We were all set to release Walking in Stations in December of 2017 but this guy Kogh Ayon really made a lot of sense so instead of all that we are going to use the resources and completely redo one Cruiser model."

I believe its more people voicing their frustrations with how CCP has been pretty much ignoring the core of the game for a couple years now and for the foreseeable future. All for some over polished turd that is Incarna. Which btw could have been released a year or 2 ago but CCP decided to scrap the old engine and make it Carbon based so it looks better and beta test it for WoD.

So exactly what CCP is doing now? Going away from the core product that got them the ~50-60k players with their 300k accounts and turning it into a crapfest with item malls? |

No all the combat is in Dust.
Incarna will just be walking and I imagine they will have some sort of animation when you sell a booster.
Read the dev blogs, read the csm minutes, then tell us specifically what this "vast potential" is.
If you think walking a computer avatar around is great then I guess you will be pleased.

just the question: how many new players will Eve get after CCP introduced let's say t3 weapon? Or T3 mining barge? Maybe T3 drone or faction BCs will attract new players?
I suppose this will not work. Current players will enjoy it. But no new blood....
The same is for other features limited by "spaceship game". Hovewer WiS is a completely new idea... Maybe it will work. Why don't try it?

You don't get it, the purpose of the game is to support 20k or so old timers. New players are just "fresh meat"; the point is not to RETAIN new players, it is to have new players "ENTERTAIN" the bittervets.
The only players we really need to keep are those 20k.

Well, it's certainly refreshing to see a new and original post...
Seriously, wtf is there going to be, to do, in stations? I personally cannot understand this fascination with walking an avatar around what is effectively going to be a space-born strip mall?
Look at other semi-dressed avatars? Hold board meetings? What? I just don't get it... Why is that attractive? And if it is an attractive idea, what brought people to Eve in the first place?
Not trying to troll, i *really* don't get it.

Uhm, the expansion was already two or three years late as it is, where have you been, and where were you when the outcry was over delay after delay? Now it is finally here, and you want the rest of it delayed?
CCP should finish tying up the loose ends on WiS, chuck it onto the build, and be done with it so they can move onto spaceships again (leaving out the obvious fact that they are also now committed to DUST514 and WoD).
True story.

There has never been a single instance since the creation of the game that anyone who ever worked at the company ever did anything that a player suggested, ever?
Did not know situations like this existed in real life, thought they were only theoretical! My how I was wrong.

I agree with the OP.
A high percentage of players came to eve for the spaceships not for random side things like WIS.
CCP is however a company that started the game in a way that looking back to 8 years ago, looks somwhat primative. Belive me they do more things right than they do wrong, and ive been here for every patch since the start.
CCP want more ways to bring in new players and they belive these bolt ons will boost that, when they see that developments in graphic or spaceships brings in more per patch than side htings nothing actually to do with the game.
They dont do this often and will learn soon that a spaceship game, is about the spaceships.

Incarna has lots of potential and could be attractive even for those who like this game mainly because of spaceships.
Personally I feel that incarna has taken bit too major role in the game, did not need to be this heavy (the incarna they presented looong time ago would have been better) and it lacks content. People don't have any idea what the end product will look like and cash shop is the main attraction atm.
Honestly if this is best CCP can do in planning and communications - well they can blame really only themselves from the poor feedback they've been receiving lately.
1. Think why and to what people will use new feature. 2. Think content -> what features will it offer to players? -> How it will change old game? -> Could players be able to give even more ideas? 3. Decide is it worth implementing -> Will it provide something to the game that people will love? -> Will it work well also with old content? -> Is it something that the development team can handle with their current workload and when. 4. Decide how good you can make it look without breaking 1,2 or 3. 5. Think if there is ways to make it more profitable for you as company without overriding 1 to 4. 6. Give carrot to playerbase and see the general feedback. 7. If people seem to agree -> start developing. 8. Implement. 9. Fix bugs. 10. Enjoy your new "happier customerbase" with improved loyality and 1000% added free positive advertising they spread to their friends and family.
...but ofc things from outside always seem much more clearer than from inside. Many things are made much more complex than they really need to be. Reasons may vary, but the fact that people always seem to make them up - doesn't.
It is simple. What is good is good and people like it.
--- This is one of the moments where we look at what CCP does and less of what they say. Innovation takes time to set in and the predictable reaction is always to resist change |
