Edited by: Tippia on 21/06/2011 23:27:50 Login works for me, but then I didn't download the update patch either (because the download failed when EVE tried)à and this issue was reported on Sisi two weeks ago.
On the other hand, EVE is still using the wrong directory for its preferences (~/Library/Application Support instead of ~/Library/Preferences) and it still ignores the preferences path given in its info.plist. àand those were reported on Sisi a month ago.
So that's four issues, and before wasting my bandwidth, I'd like to know if downloading the full client will actually address them:- Login doesn't work (for some)
- Update patch cannot be downloaded
- The wrong preferences path is used.
- The info.plist is ignored.

Quality job there.
Looks like we Mac users have once again been screwed over. Now WHO would have guessed that...? Damn, and I so thought I could win this bet for the Mac client working right away. Ok, the odds where 1e9 : 1, but hey...

Go to textedit, type in your password, then copy it. Go to the client and use CTRL+V to paste. No *'s will show, but try and it should let you in. I did restart the client twice before it accepted this mind you, and I may have hit v twice. In other words mash windows paste shortcut.

Wish CCP actually cared about their mac users. They say to "download the Full Client" but do they give any other instructions? no. do we need to delete eve from our mac's? no idea. overwrite the application? im not sure.
Can someone from the Dev team actually tell us what needs to be done?

For those of you with bandwidth limitations, it should be possible to rip out Cider and distribute that separately. The EVE client is always the same as the PC version (which is to say it's not the problem component), which means it's Cider. Cider is only a fraction of the size of the whole client. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map |

CCP I am sorry but this is a new low for you I have been waiting to get on sense I got home 3 hours ago and now have a 5hour and 11 minute download that will hopefully be finished at 1 in the morning my time. All mac users should get a free plex for this because in 5 hours I could easily make 200million isk if I was on and able to organize a mining op. I was hoping to get on and have fun and explore the new stuff and make a quick 200mil before bed with my 140man alliance but no I will be able to get on a 1 tomorrow morning in the hopes that I loose as few skill points as possible as my training time finished 2 or 3 hours ago so I might as well have not bought lvl 5 implants.
Im very disappointed in you CCP I expected better from you all.

I think 3 is the correct answer. I feel lucky that it takes an EPIC FAIL before anything good happens for Mac users with CCP. Why would they say the solution is to download the client again when apparently that is just as big a FAIL as downloading the patch?

mac client messed up as always... guys, maybe we can buy you a mac and you would just try to install client on it to see if basic things like logging in works? On a 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mac, 4GB of RAM, Nvidia GT 130:
- Can't enter password, need to copy&paste.
- ~3-8fps in CQ in highest settings, ~12-20fps in lowest setting.
- FPS in space constantly wobbling between ~55 and... uh... 3-5. This kills any activity whatsoever.
- UI lag on basic things like selecting a window between 0.5 and 5 seconds.
- Sometimes the lag combined with typing in chat results in sudden chat tab change.
- No 'warp to/orbit/approach' submenu for asteroid belts in right-click menu in space.
- Remember that skipping jukebox? Yup, still there.
Honestly, I'd rather hear "don't bother, Mac client isn't supported." As it stands right now, it looks like Mac Pro would give somewhat decent Eve experience. And it's not a problem with hardware, as the game works fine once you reboot to Windows.
Will we get some fixes, or is it going to remain broken like that? Or is the above configuration simply too low-end for CQ and Incarna as a whole? I can somewhat understand CQ(*) but breaking quite good performance I was getting in space is... um... very very bad. I'm seriously disappointed.
(*) Somewhat. After all, it's 2011. There are plenty of 3D engines out there. It's not a rocket (hehe) science to use them.

For those that have tested the build on SiSi:
you do not need to re-download. The patch is broken, but the latest SiSi client is valid.
Just remove the command line argument setting from the config file and let it connect to TQ to download the minipatch. Alternatively remove/rename the preferences folder (the new one in Application Support) to let it recreate one copying the settings you were using on TQ from the old folder (the one in Preferences).
you may want to backup everything first, clients and preferences. --- I don't know! I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again! Bart Simpson. |

The Mac patch is currently being tested but we do not currently have an ETA on when it will be done but we will let you know as soon as it is available. Our current work around is to download the full client.
If there is a known issue with a broken patch, then WHY does the game still download that same patch when you launch the old client? What's wrong with you people?

I think 3 is the correct answer. I feel lucky that it takes an EPIC FAIL before anything good happens for Mac users with CCP. Why would they say the solution is to download the client again when apparently that is just as big a FAIL as downloading the patch?
Alright then here goes #3...
....and EPIC FAIL it is!
eve-premium_006453_271273-mac-1.dmg -> mounting failed (this is downloading the FULL CLIENT, which is current solution) 3 attempts and no joy.

Ok so far:
logged on using the cpoy paste method: check noticed that ships in the ships folder have no right click menu on the mac: check sooo: mac user are not able to change ships, not able to open corp hangers or the ore hold on a orca. Next issue: unable to move anymore in the captains quarters...
short explenation: this content is broken, untested simply an embaresment, people who said this was ready for launch should be fired yesterday. I mean don't blame this on unforseen bugs, this is the basic function of the game and it's broken for mac user's. Seriously, release the patch later for mac and actually test it, or don't release anything at all if you know it's broken.

Known Issues
- We have discovered an issue with the Mac client patch. Mac client users will need to download the full client.
Ok, so just to clarify, all mac users should NOT download the current patch, but instead reload the full client? Do we need uninstall Incursions, or will it overwrite?
Any guesstimate when the patch will be fixed so it will work on Mac's? Few hours, Few days?
Thanks.
The Mac patch is currently being tested but we do not currently have an ETA on when it will be done but we will let you know as soon as it is available. Our current work around is to download the full client.
Numerous posts asking if we downloaded the patch will the full download overwrite the patch or do we need to take other action first? When CCP finally responds no mention of what many of us are asking.
I really enjoy this game and was foolishly hopeful that my Incarna experience would be different from the last upgrades. Surely they would adequately test a major change like this. Apparently not.
I'm sure that they are all running around like headless chickens trying to fix this and they are all probably exhausted. But when this happens time after time is there not a review that points out that the process (as well as the code) is broken?
I've evaluated my process and am committed to change. I will be taking a weeks break from Eve for the next major upgrade. I like to think that they would learn from debacle after debacle, but it doesn't seem that they do or that they will.

You know we should really know by now, on day before patch day, set a minimum 3 day skill and just assume that things will work on Wednesday, but certainly not Tuesday. CCP here's a technique that works for many companies, under promise and over deliver. Tell us it's gonna be down for 24 hours, so when you fix it in 22 we're happy. I'm now going to bed, and won't be able to attempt again until 0930. Given that my queue ended at 2255 or so I figure you'll owe me ~ 10 hours. Given that you had originally promised that it would be all happy and ready to go by 1730.

I had heard of these same problems reported in the forums, and I wasn't even following it. I foolishly thought that CCP just fixed the problem before release. Silly me. àyou know what?
I might just zip up my EVE.app on my Air and distribute it since it (amazingly) does not seem to exhibit any of the issues reported. Most likely it's because I didn't install the optional update when it was first offered to me (or, rather, I couldn't install it because the download failed).
Password field works. Right-click works. No idea if CQ works becauseà wellà it's on an Air and I haven't turned CQ on for obvious reasons.
In fact, CCP ù if you want to bughunt, look through what the optional update did and, you know, don't do that, because it seems most of the problems come from that update rather than from the base build. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I used the trick to get past login on a Mac.
I'm getting 1 fps outside station if I'm lucky, and the fans on my compy sound like a jet engine.
The frames I do see look very nice, so I adjusted my graphics settings to the lowest possible.
Still getting 1fps, and I think that's generous.
I can type in alliance and corp but not local, can't read local either. Right clicking is not working on anything.
The only thing I can do is talk to alliancemates on their Wintel boxen, and even then there is a huge amount of lag. I tried ticking the cache files locally box and waiting 20 minutes, but still nothing better.
So, I'm DLing the full client, for the third time. First two stalled and disconnected.
Since Eve is a collaborative environment, my corpmates and I are all suffering due to this delay. Since it is a strategic game, all corps and alliances with Mac players are now at a disadvantage. Since it is a financial game, I am losing considerable income. Since it is 5 gigs, I am spending disproportionate amounts of cash to play on a Mac. Needless to say I am very frustrated and it hurts even moreso because I love this game, but not so much that it justifies buying a dedicated gaming PC.

Well... I repeatedly did the ctrl-V pword thing and got in. CQ is totally inoperable at <10fps- so I turned it off. I really appreciate CCP allowing us to turn off CQ. I might keep it if it worked. looks nice enough. I undocked, however, to find SPACE as slow as being docked.... not good not good at all I didn't crash immediately though, which is more than I can say for the last few patches.

It's incredible...
Gone from 60 fps on the 9400m with safari open (macbook pro mid 2009, all settings low) to 5-15 fps with skipping and system slowness IN JUST ONE RELEASE!
And that's just the Intro screen, because pasting with Ctrl-V isn't doing ****.
How do you do it, CCP? Kinda ruined the nice news of Final Cut on the App Store.. May aswell install Boot Camp and write off playing under Mac OS X...

I've demanded similar reparations due to their meathead antics, they'll never do it. They seek only to make more money by attracting what I believe to be fools (prospective customers who think walking in stations is actually cool), and they don't care when an already-paying customer is annoyed.
Almost everything they do is a hack and they only care about money. Simple CCP economics. Hell with em, already canceled my account before next billing cycle.

Oh well, waiting 90 minutes for a download of a .dmg file that my computer won't recognize. Can't try to see if patch is fixed, because major updates always go so wrong that I automatically do a full reinstall anyway and the old client is very much gone.
Time to go do something else and feel thankful I dropped in a nice long skill yesterday and set my all my PI to run nice and slow.
Perhaps CCP will finally give me a good enough excuse to save myself some time and money, and who knows, maybe even go back to having a life.

At least this will speed up the number of Mac users complaining about gameplay issues.
Please be honest, if the client is unusable after login is it even worth downloading the full client at this time?

In addition to the login and gameplay issues reported above, there seems to be an problem with the current patch where it fails to install claiming file corruption. This happened at the launch of Tyrannis and Incursion as well. Any chance we'll see a client repair tool update soon? In the past that fixed this issue...

I do think the mac users are at a disadvantage here. The base of people using the mac os are small compared to those that use Windows in the eve universe. So, when trying to release a product quickly, more attention to testing will be centered around the most used: Windows.
But the lag issues and poor performance is on the PC side as well. I feared this when I watched Fanfest 2011 on youtube. The impression I got, now fully realized, is that the Incarna update will only work as designed if you got the best product NVIDA had to offer. I am only a student of software engineering, but I do appreciate the scope of this endeavor and knew that there was no feasible way to pull this off without a hitch. Changes made to an application, at the scope of Incarna, brings with it a whole slew of problems no one can anticipate--no matter the level of testing done--but, some applications can only be throughly tested upon release. In fact, 80% of software's life cycle is spent in testing and maintenance. There is no silver bullet to software development. It is an inexact science.

The stupid patch has reset all my settings and is not using the prefs file it used to.
I am NOT going to try to put everything back the way I like it. Further, I saw a note early in this thread that the test version was putting the prefs file in the wrong directory and it WAS KNOWN AT THE TIME. Eve is using a prefs file in ~/Library/Application Support/ instead of ~/Library/Preferences and is completely ignoring the info.plist name.
HOW ******** hard is it to change a pathname?! How ****** hard is it to NOT CHANGE IT THE FIRST TIME?!
If this is still fu**** up tomorrow I'm am going to be demanding a refund for what's left on all 4 of my accounts and quitting this game I love but company I hate.

Which means that anyone running multiple clients is screwed. Given that this problem has been known for weeks, I find it mind-boggling that it was not fixed.
I have been bringing up the issue of Quality Assurance problems and the kafkaesque nature of the bug reporting system at every summit. Maybe someday someone will buy a vowel (available for AUR in the NeX?) and recognize how much this kind of thing is costing CCP.

It is a Mac NOT a MacIntosh.
Extremely Unprofessional Release. Makes me doubt the entire Q&A AND development groups. Have your heard of Agile development? Have you heard of Test Driven Design?
Is none of the core development group working under Mac OS X native? For shame.
I have seen more professionalism from a 12 year old programmer with six months experience.
Having worked in software development at OEMs and on COTS for YEARS, this is seriously amateur hour. Christ, fire whoever is in charge of development and let this slip through. Fire some of the development group. Then they will realize there are consequences for shoddy unprofessional work!
What? Don't care about the Mac base? Drop the client and quit pretending.
My guess is senior management PUSHED the release threw due to the announced date and development was forced to cut corners. Fire the MANAGEMENT IDIOTS who made that decision.
I expect no reply and no satisfaction. How very, very sad and pathetic. |

This is not a bug. This is an intended change in cider that tries to align it with Apple rules (it's most probably part of a set of changes that they did in this regard as Lion, coming out next month, is going to be somewhat stricter in what is allowed and what is frowned upon).
The problem is that the EvE client itself should manage the cache and other files it creates expecting multiple running instances, but it does not. It's a problem of interaction between EVE and cider, not a problem of cider or a problem of eve. Not the first time this kind of problems surface. In the past it took them a couple of months after deployment to fix up.

On top of that I've been harassing CCP Manifest and CCP Affinity on twitter a few hours ago pointing them to this very problem. CCP Manifest replied that we should keep spamming this forum (note: he's not the right person for this as he does social media and knows nothing of Macs). To put this in perspective, I am probably one of the most trouble-free OSX client users ever.
I never get broken files. I always manage to patch the client. None of the more complicated problems in this thread affect me (aside from the ones listed on page 1). I've always had good performance before this patch, in spite of what others may report, and I get good performance in this patch. I even get decent performance in CQ when I have it turned on. I think my Quafe t-shirt looks very snazzy. I never seem to get bitten by the nasty bugs some people report. Hell, I can play the game semi-acceptably on my MB Air. I am, in short, the best-case scenarioà
àand I managed to find and report every last one of the core issues with this patch during the Sisi testing. The best-case scenario made these bugs brutally and blatantly obvious. There is quite literally no excuse for CCP not having known and not having addressed them before launch. Yes, sometimes things don't show up and cannot be reproduced during internal testing, but again: I am apparently a best-case scenarioà the only way for these things not to show up during internal testing is if no internal testing took place.
So I don't think there is a development group to fire.

Ok, fair enough, but I'm still questioning why it makes sense. Will Lion do away with the Preference directory, and if not, why shouldn't this stuff go in there? The client should move your setting from the old preferences to the new one when it starts.
This only works of the old settings are not somehow corrupted and the new settings are non-existent.
It seems that the old settings are untouched. Therefore if you did some testing on SiSi or on DuCi earlier, you can try deleting (or renaming) the directory "~/Library/Application Support/EVE Online" and then run the client: it should re-create your settings according to the latest TQ. --- I don't know! Tried that earlier. Nope. It ignores your previous prefs files and starts from scratch. I was able to COPY the 4GB older prefs file over, rename it to the default, and it works. But eve ignores the prefs file name you enter in the info.plist and ONLY uses the default file name. If it doesn't find one, it MAKES one, which means NO settings.
Like I said, they've finally managed to find something that will make me quit Eve. I'm not quitting Eve, I'm refusing to donate real-life money to a company that doesn't give a **** about me.

That would be there is no QA group to fire... really either this wasn't tested, or it was tested and someone said 'don't give a ****, deploy anyway'. That said, i did dl the full client and it 'works' at least i can see and move around CQ. Funny colors/textures missing though. Haven't tried to leave station yet though...
and the no running multiple clients, well that kills my gameplay. No need to have multiple accounts if I can't use more than one at a time. So that's 2/3 of the cash/month less that you will get from me if it doesn't get fixed. I'm sure that's the case for all who have multiple accounts. That's losing money on a patch, if I'm not mistaken.

After a rough experience with the broken patch I managed to get a functional full installer. I have installed on both my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro. Login and right click issues are resolved. Running with reduced graphic settings definitely helps keep the MacBook Pro a lot quieter.
So far I've only tested basic walking around, undocking and shooting some rats in the belts. I'll update later once I have more time to push the system and maybe get multiple clients running. |

It's not a question of firing someone. It's a question of changing the whole development process. I do not mean they should ditch SCRUM. If it works for them, fine. But the whole mentality to announce things when you have the idea for someting and that you must deploy twice an year is wrong. Or at least it bears as an almost unavoidable consequence a bug ridden deployment.
They should switch to having an expansion when it's ready, not when it's scheduled.

It's a SM3.0-capable chip, so it should be supported.
It probably counts as "below minimum spec", though, but I'm not up to snuff on the ATI naming conventions, so I could be wrong about that.

My saga:
First I downloaded the patch, couldn't log in until I tried the cut and paste trick.
CQ was totally non functional, maybe 1 fps (generous).
Then I trashed the old install and downloaded the new client. Hooray! The ship on the opening screen does not stutter across the screen, and I can log in!
Boo! CQ is still useless, I now get maybe 5 fps when moving, but the UI elements take SECONDS to respond to a click. I added skills to the que and logged.
Here are my system specs, they do not suck but are also not the latest. Given the terrible performance of the client, I don't know what it could take to make this playable:
Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed:3.06 GHz Number Of Processors:1 Total Number Of Cores:2 L2 Cache:6 MB Memory:4 GB Bus Speed:1.07 GHz Chipset Model:NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS Type:GPU Bus:PCIe PCIe Lane Width:x16 VRAM (Total):512 MB

A little update to all:
Im running the game on a 2010 model Macbook pro 15" i7 Processor 4GB DDR3 Ram Nvidia GT330M Card with 512MB VRam
- I had all the problems as evryone els - I downloaded the Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge client (thx ccp...) - I opened up the downloaded client and thx to my lazyness i set it to replace the one i had - Wait - Wait - Wait some more - Opened the game and it worked much smoother - i set the graphics settings as they were before incarna and this is what i have so far: - Inside the station i'm having some lagg but i do realize that it might be my Graphics card suffering, i havent really looked into the new demands.. - In space the atmosphere seams heavier than before, meaning a little less fps. Although im running with 20-30+ fps so i really can't complain. So my conclusion is that although it's REALLY hard to believe that this computer might be getting too old to run this game optimally, i can live with a bit lag inside the station, as long as i have no lag what so ever in space, cause thats where things happen. With that said i do realize that i will have a problem when ill be walking around at the station and i find myself walking with other players, kinda afraid that my computer will melt he he :-D

I downloaded the full Incarna client, installed it, and it seems to work well. However, when I fire up EVE it says there is a client update I should download. "Incarna 1.0 Client Update #1" It gets 80% through the download then fails with the message "unable to install update, click OK to continue". The good news is the game still plays, the bad news is I can't install/download the update.

Same here. Up until this patch I haven't had any issues patching the client. Today I downloaded the 950 MB patch file twice and it failed verification both times. I'm now well into the 3rd hour of downloading the 5GB full client.

On Shader Quality = High, textures for arms/hands and shirt/top missing replaced by textureless tennis ball yellow color. Other settings don't affect this, it is definitely the shader settings.
Shader Quality = Low, low textures are present... but really, the dock looks ugly...
I'm assuming this is the same problem that has existed for a while where the 'damaged' stations in missions/plexes are all red and extremely hard on cpu/gpu where shader quality = high, but ok on low. Maybe?

The above tip will enable you to log in however performance is awful. I had fps ≈10 IN SPACE on my macbook pro 9400M (yeah i know it is not a gaming rig.) and some menues (like warp to belt) didn't work. Also the main screen in CQ was bugged.
After downloading the full install i get over 30 fps in space and CQ is actually usable if shader quality is brought down to low.
TL;DR: Make a new clean install to avoid problems.

Just to confirm as of 8:00am GMT, Autopatch worked for me first time. 950ish Mb download.
Was a 'default' install of Eve I've not changed any plists I did not attempt early download of patch
iMac 27" i7 10.6.7 (i think)
NOTE: After the download and patch, it takes an AGE doing 'nothing'. Comment has been thats it copying cache to new location, seems resonable. Watch activity monitor, theres an eve process and a kernal task doing stuff. Disk activity is busy. When that stops, new client will launch.
Only managed to log in quick, but good results. Optional client install also worked ok.
Maller on the first screen looks 'ok'. In station is 'ok', interface is maybe a little laggy/clunky.
All in all, a smooth patch process. Lesson learnt, wait for someone else to find the bugs first. :)

I've only recently signed up to EVE, and I have been playing on an old MBP with one of the radeon ATi cards. The updates thru INCURSION progressively got worst, so i wasn't anticipating INCARNA to be a "smooth ride"... but then i find out through the forums that the card is no longer supported, and that the minimum requirements have gone up (the day of the update!). An official email from CCP a bit before INCARNA was released would have been nice?!?
Fortunately i have other computers to overcome this issue (although others may not be so lucky). But I'm still concerned by the quality of service being offered here. I appreciate programming isn't straight forward and all that... But i would agree with previous post saying that if the app is not ready, don't release it! Especially since most of this stuff was apparently flagged up in your test environment!
I'd like to carry on playing this game, and have been recommending to a few others... but after this whole experience i'm not too sure i want to!

Updated the page on evelopedia on howto run 2 clients.
CQ still is very buggy and camera movement is strange. Fix the right-click lag please it is bad.
I have a hell of a machine (newest iMac i7, 16 GB RAM, 2GB Radeon 6970) and CQ performance is poor at best. In space performance is very good. -------------

Edited by: SPAECMARNIES on 22/06/2011 10:26:49 I'm not going to read the entire topic, but here's my experience:
- First off, jesus christ, test-patch your own machines before deploying to public, what the christ is wrong with you?
- Why is cider/cedega/wineserver hogging my machine and is there nothing to show for it?
- My preferences were lost, it defaulted to high settings. Cra****ycrash.
- Introduction film clips, about 5 fps and shows weird colours on places they shouldnt be. Unless the top of the video must be red/green/yellow/blue in what looks like to be meant (very) dark grey spaces.
- My character while in captain's quarters is near uncontrollable, as in, unresponsive and slow.
- Overall graphics performance is worse than terrible, massive stutter on log-in screen, Captains quarters about 5 fps.
I haven't even tried undocking yet, it is totally unplayable thus-far. Personally, I'd be deeply ashamed of releasing software like this.
Tested on a Mac Pro (2010), Mac Mini (2010), Macbook pro (2009) and Macbook (2009), all with sufficient memory, graphics cards as their specifications dictate.

Have you no shame? Are you not embarrassed enough with failure?
Oh for goodness sake! Stop the madness! Stop pretending to even develop this for the Mac. There are plenty of bugs already in EVE without introducing all the crap that TransGodawful's Cider brings to the table.
Stop leading us on with lies about a Mac client. Hell M$ Office is more fun to play than EVE on a Mac. I get better FPS in a WMV from icanhascheezeburger than EVE.
Pull the plug. Turn it off. Reassign the devs assigned to work on the Mac client/with TransGoofingoff's Cider people.
Every patch from Tyranis on down has necessitated a full client download. The ability to test it beforehand on SiSi is almost non-existant. Reported issues before deployment are left untouched/unfixed. Often fixed issues are re-introduced for subsequent patches.
Do you not have enough other things to do with your time? Surely you could be doing something productive with the energy you pretend to be giving the Mac client.

Don't know if this has been reported already:
On my iMac 27", 2.8 GHz i5, 4 GB RAM, ATI HD 5750 w/ 1 GB I experience massive problems with the character editor and the character customization feature.
The character editor corrupts textures and color palettes (my new char is blue - bright blue).
The character customization feature crashes EVE every time I try to access it. Works like a charm on my Windows EVE.
Please hire a REAL Mac programmer to provide us with a REAL Mac EVE port. Not this Cider abomination we have now. We spend good money on you and I think we deserve a better product. Thank you.

I'm having trouble with starting the game. The patch installed itself just fine and everything went ok until i started eve. A red cloudy picture came up and it lagged like 1 frame / 2-3sec... Slowly the new maller shows up and its still laggin as hell. I noticed i can move the mouse and interact with the nomal login screen... but the video is just repeating it self and it never stop lagging...

Just thought I'd toss my $0.02 in ...
MacPro 3,1 (8-core) 14Gig RAM ATI 5770 GPU Fully up-to-date Snow Leopard 10.6.7
I tossed my old client, downloaded new client. Installation seemed to go fine. When connecting, get told about a patch, installed that. Relogged and character screen comes up fine. I try to actually go in game and the screen begins to load the station interface (buttons and icons on the right hand side). It gets about half of them (with the remaining showing as !) and locks up. Audio goes on loop but no interaction with the interface. I can force-quit and my computer goes back to normal but the EVE client simply won't function.
As of now, it's unplayable. Fortunately I have an 8-day skill training going ...

OK CCP - you have here a 4.5 year player with multiple clients running on a pimped-out mac pro. This piece of junk "upgrade" is so unprofessional that I am going to suspend all but one account until you fix what you never should have released. It isn't a lot of money to you and you don't care, but it will make me feel a lot better. Obviously there was not even rudimentary testing of the mac client.

So I installed the patch and went for a fly around with my HULK... Noticed something odd with the T2 mining turrets... When you go into warp, they retract like they should and them immediately pop out again. Warped back to station and top rear two retracted, but top front turret stayed up, and on the bottom the front two stayed out, and the rear bottom retracted. This was in Optimized for Quality and Performance graphic settings
This turret retracting and deployment behavior changes randomly.

Downloaded full client last night once available, but no time to install it yet. Did this now, but made backup copies of preferences, etc.
Turns out the client installs fine. Startup time before getting to login screen takes minutes to load, same after char selection til in station. BUT it seems all my preferences had been copied over. Bookmarks, contacts, overview settings all seem to be intact.
CQ needs turning shader to low, otherwise char surface is rendered rubbish. FPS in CQ ok, in space fine as usual (maybe even a bit faster?).
What I did for this update:
- not try to have client patch itself
- download full client, extract incl. verify and install WITHOUT deleting previous incursion client
- I assume the backups I made weren't needed, but would still recommend those few extra minutes
- once started, let client run, although some things take ages (in particular getting to login). I assume that somewhere in those phases the client copies all the settings and preferences.
- when prompted at login, install the small additional patch
- once online, turn shader to low
My hardware: MB Pro 2010, 2.66 GHz Core i7, 4 GB RAM, nVidia GeForce GT330M up to date version of OS X 10.6.7.

I have eve installed on two systems. on the new 2011 imac (ATi GFX card), i can run it with CQ enabled. however, my item inventory (200+ items) is a bit broken on it. i pretty much have to use the search field to find stuff. scrolling doesn't work well, and i don't see all the items that way.
on my 2010 MBP (NVidia GT 330MT), CQ is pretty unusable. with minimal settings, i get ~7FPS with everything on minimum. often, i get textures misloading so that i end up with yellow arms or no body.

Running OS 10.6.7 on 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro 5,1 with 4GB Ram
Character editor doesn't work properly. Played with the settings a bit, from medium to high quality and textures/colors aren't rendering properly when I attempt to re-customize. After an attempt at adding glasses, my character was white. Clothes and all. Also had another occasion where there was a mix of rendering and not, with numbers across the face.
Additionally, the load time when I dock seems very very long. So far I have had a couple of times where the client has crashed when I dock while CQ is loading.
"Gameplay" in CQ is unplayable at this point. Unable to properly control movement and everything is slow and unresponsive, regardless of settings. I admit to not trying low settings. I'm not paying $15 a month to look at poor graphics. If all I can manage is low settings then why bother with CQ? I will be turning off CQ until it is properly implemented. While my computer might not be the ideal machine for Incarna, this "expansion" feels as if it is still a Beta version. I was going to add a new account, to try the tutorials, and I was also going to recommend a couple of friends try EVE now that Incarna has been released. However, I won't be doing either with CQ in the current state.
One more thing, I would have tested this on Sisi, but every time I tried there were problems with the Sisi Mac client, and I wasn't able to.

OK, Here is my feedback in relation to this expansion. I have a late 2009 MBP 17" Best spec, apart from 4 GB stock RAM.
Graphics set at medium, no frilly graphics settings, and shader set to low.
- Login window seems to be buggy. The new Maller warps in then moves in a stuttering fashion along its trajectory. Once clicking login, you notice for a fraction of a second the Maller jutters, and jumps back to a previous point along said trajectory, pretty much like it just warped in again.
- I am unable to download client patch #2. The patching get fails at any point from 0% to 100%
- Loading into CQ seems fine, and it also seems to run perfectly well on my machine, no loss in FPS.
- Holo Displays and new Aura stuff seems really good, I think it will be positive for new players as part of the new player experience. Though when you highlight to click on a holo display, it does not seem massively obvious that clicking on them will do anything. This could bamboozle some new players.
- Having to use the two holo menus to access drone and cargo bays seems to be a little restrictive. Other options are available from the main UI menus.
- I noticed a pretty big performance boost when undocking from Jita 4-4 normally loading all the brackets makes undocking a massive unresponsive lag fest, no longer!
That is all for now :)

It can be so bad because they are too lazy to make their own Mac client. Instead they pay someone else to make a Windoze simulator. That company takes CCPs money and laughs at them. TransJokes only requirement prior to patch day is that the app will start up. Quality? Bugs? Bugs they've known about for 2 weeks prior to patch day?
/spits.
By the way, my clients are currently working correctly. I did it by downloading the full client yesterday i.e. starting from scratch. Of course, I also disabled CQ before I ever logged in. It may still be broken but I don't care at all about "walking in station".

Edited by: ShepherdE on 22/06/2011 17:58:19 I have never posted on the boards... until today. In reading all 10 pages worth of threads, without so much as a peep from CCP, I am compelled to voice my opinion as a Mac user. Being a Mac user, I inherently know that most MMO games are not a reality for me. Hence my decision to play EVE. Although a minority, I am shocked to find that there certainly are thousands of Mac users in EVE, and over the last day, we, I have been let down.
The point I wish to make is two fold: 1. The Patch. It behooves me to think that CCP had a gross oversight concerning Mac users, thinking this would work. In my opinion, they knew it wouldn't, but deployed anyway. I don't disagree with that decision. What I do however take exception to is the absolute lack of regard for the Mac minority community. Why not simply post on the main site that Mac users would have to be patient over the next few days as things got sorted out? I don't mind having to be patient. I do mind being made ignorant as a result of unavailable information. Simply, I don't know why the patch doesn't work and why they (CCP) won't explain the situation to me. I'm adult. I can handle problematic OS's that aren't being made a priority. I can't handle being ignored.
2. Customer Service. I am a paying customer. I am not therefore entitled to compensation when the advertised product I have purchased does not work as advertised? Basically, I was lead to believe that what I was paying for undoubtedly work. I was either knowingly or unknowingly lied too. Meaning, I am the victim of false advertising. Fraud is the word used in court. Again, the lassitude of CCP had forced me down this path as I, the customer am being told nothing despite having paid for a broken product.
I am frustrated not by the broken game, but by the slothful attitude and approach of CCP and their lack of regard for my hard earned dollar.
Shame on you CCP for avoiding us. I understand my computer operating system is the minority - but I am still a paying customer worth your effort, am I not?

I'm an older player and when the sub-incarna update for characters was put in, I couldn't put in tats or piercings or scars, but when the INCARNA came out, I couldn't even load up the login screen on my old Macbook Pro which has been able to play EVE for about 2 years now, sufficiently enough for me to do missions and incursions. Now it keeps saying I need a new graphics card... wtf?

So, still no solution to the patch verify fail problem other than "Download and install the full client." We must all seriously be masochistic considering we actually pay to be abused like this.
The silence from CCP is quite astounding, even on the PC issues channel.
Guess I'll wait another day to see what pans out before doing the full client download.

Somehow I managed to get everything to work on my MBP.
What I did to get around the failing autopatch: Manually download the patch for your current client version at: http://www.eveonline.com/patches/patches.asp Choose for incursion 1.6.1 version 267203 Just start the app and it will patch your client.
To fix the missing preferences like ingame browser bookmarks, window placement settings, overview settings etc. do the following. Start a terminal session. cd ~/Library/Preferences/EVE Online Preferences/p_drive/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings cp -r * ~/Library/Application Support/EVE Online/p_drive/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings
This worked for me.

Confirming that reinstalling the client and applying patch incarna #2 makes the client run smooth and without issues (as far as I've discovered) on my Imac
So yes it sucks they made a fail patch, but reinstalling does resolve the issue, for those able to download the 5Gb it's a lifesaver.

Minor update to the topic. Re-downloaded full client, manually moved EVE folder from preferences and cleared all other files throughout the system of eve presence (in other words - completely destroyed all cache files). Installed from incarna full client .dmg and voila, patch_one downloads and completes, patch_two does not however (Game crashes at random download percentage), so i proceed to login without. I log in correctly, can move fly etc. BUT!!!!! On all details low/switched off, i get 96¦C on CPU and 72¦C on GPU on my MPB'09 in less than 5 minutes! W00t?! Latest incursion was at 84¦C MAX after several hours of roam-flights...
My MAC won't simply survive more than few hours of gameplay this way. And i do not want to think, what would happen if i undock in somewhere like Jita 4-4, "instaburnout", overheat-crash?
Are you freaking serious!? I do not get more than 94¦C when i compile QT libraries for hours for freaking sake... Again, word by word - COMPILE - QT4 - LIBRARIES from scratch (not even macports).
What, in an unbelievable hell should EVE's GUI do, to throttle CPU to it's limits? OMG, i will suggest Tom's Hardware writers to set current release of eve client as an ultimate stress test for MAC's and PC's alike.
Devs. no offense, i know what it is to develop something and how consuming this work is, but, this is worst than Vista on release day. You should have postponed the main release a week at the very least, seriously.

This made a BIG improvement. I run 3-4 clients at times, and Incarna KILLED my Mac. It's working now. Here's how:
1) make sure you keep copy of your prior overview settings 2) download FULL install (6GB or so) 3) perform clean install 4) Launch only to discover that patch #1 is available 5) Install patch #1 and reboot 6) Launch to discover that patch #2 is available 7) Attempt to install patch #2, only to realize that it's also buggged (and won't intsall) 8) skip patch #2 9) follow directions above if you're going to run multiple clients. 10) stay the HELL out of Jita - station lag is crazy (even with CG turned OFF, and all settings to low)
Great work CCP! I'm sure it'll make sense in 6 months when Lion arrives, but a quick FAQ or heads up wouldn't have lost you any clients.

As a previous poster mentioned, this is a contracting problem between CCP and Transgaming (or whoever is doing the Mac port), and not necessarily all CCP's fault that the Mac client is completely screwed up. I was able to login and fire up a new training queue, but haven't had the nuts to try and undock yet. And if you haven't learned that you should set long training queues prior to patch day then that's on you, not CCP! Even so, it is disappointing that after 8 years CCP hasn't built a better process to get an at least moderately tested Mac client out on patch day. I mean seriously, the freaking keyboard doesn't work on the password box?!??? Insane!

After downloading and installing I installed the patch that was previously mentioned in this thread ( http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1533189 ). Then I installed the 1# patch which the client suggested and got the thing running.
So far the only thing that was saved were my notes. Overview setting, general settings, market settings and everything else - gone. The game is really laggy, the character doesn¦t always load up, game freezes sometimes, ship doesn¦t always jump through gates and the overall experience is like I was playing with a really low end computer which I¦m not - and yes, no visual effects in space (warping, shields, gunfire etc)...

I thought I would update this. I am now functioning, after I deleted the client AND the preferences folders and did a reinstall from the .dmg file. I let the client apply the patch as normal and it still wouldn't let me in. Upon starting the client again, I adjusted the graphics settings to set Shaders to Low and everything else I could to Medium. THEN, and only then, would it let me in the game and actually function.
So I'm in and able to play, but not overly happy with the process...

Edited by: Levarr Burton on 23/06/2011 04:55:46 Managed to find a friend with a 27" ~year old iMac (I'd have to look up the exact specs) for me to test this on, as my computers don't run EVE anymore.
In space: Beautiful, smooth as butter, 50+fps without breaking a sweat, even at high graphics settings. Turrets look nice. Maller looks sweet, more new ship skins please.
In station: Unplayable. Utterly unplayable. 5-15fps tops, and it's really straining to run it at that. This leads to the entire CQ-based UI being completely unusable in its current form. View from the balcony was nice, when I finally managed to get my character to get there. For now, this feature is going off and staying off until some serious optimization gets done. CQ was definitely not ready for prime-time, and it shows. The static background is meh, and I miss spinning my ship.
Also, I found that I crash to desktop about 5-10% of the time while docking. No error message, and EVE won't re-start until the computer has been rebooted. Irritating. In ur engineering, fixin' ur warp core. |

'Show Info' on blueprints for turret items does not work. Some bpo/bpc's will show the icon for the actual item, but other than that no info is shown.
Turret items include: miners, gas harvesters, railguns, autocannons, ... Items for which the (blueprint) icon has not changed still work correctly. (I did not check all items though).

Well, I got it working (although it does sometimes get stuck). But here's what gets me: I have better specs than the *recommended* specs for Mac users. Why in the world would I want to play with all the eye candy disabled??? If I has specs like this running Windoze, I could have played EVE with no problems @ highest graphics settings. Before Incarna, I was able to play @ highest graphics settings without even a hint of lag.
CCP, if you're reading this (which is probably not true), are there any answers you can provide?

I do not understand your point.
I have no idea what CCP means with "recommended specs" but the way I understand it is: - "minimum specs" means what you need to match for the game to start at all. The gaming experience will be very bad even at minimal options and minimal resolution. - "recommended specs" means the gaming experience is deemed "decent" if you play with the minimal graphics options at a reduced resolution. --- I don't know! Here's the deal - minimum specs are to play the game at a bare minimum, turning off everything possible so that the game simply runs on your machine. Recommended specs is when you want to enjoy the game at its finest, with all the eye candy on and without lag.
The problem here is that I got a machine well above even the recommended specs for a Mac, and still have to turn everything off so that I can at least enjoy my game without lag. Prior to Incarna, I was able to play with all settings set to "High" and have not encountered even the slightest lag.

However, once in, right clicking doesn't work, so I am stuck in my noctis, and can't sell anything etc. Strangely I can move about CQ fine, but trying to load market or charactor sheet etc, takers forever, so still leaves the game basically unplayable. Should I reinstall the full build again? Has it been updated since disaster Tuesday? I sent a petition to CCP but they haven't answered, which I guess won't surprise many of you.

Comp is almost a year old.
In Space: General in space flight and pew pewing is fine, if anything I'd say things are running smoother. All settings are set to high minus aliasing which is disabled. No Interface issues, no right click issues.
CQ: Computer is definitely working harder and running a bit hotter to render one room with one character, no overheating but I don't want to push it, and temp is well within acceptable range. That said I don't know what the hell is going to happen with several toons walking around in larger spaces, CQ is a tad jittery though not horrible, certainly not as smooth as space flight.
Setting Character textures to high will sometimes turn my toon pitch black, set to medium: no problems. Haven't had this issue before with setting character textures to high.
Docking will sometimes cause the game to crash while the CQ is loading, simulated cloth/hair is disabled.

I have an iMac (iMac9,1); 27"; 3.06GHz. Gave up on the patches, rather downloaded the entire client.
Most of it seems to be working nominally, but doesn't recognize L-C307 as a solar system in "People and Places".

No. The way I see it is that "minimum" means you run the game, but you do not get a decent playing experience. Recommended is what you need to have a decent experience with minimum setting.
You may disagree, but that's your problem as you are the one that is going to be deluded by the actual gaming experience. That is still what the specs indicate. --- I don't know! I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again! Bart Simpson. |

Tried patching normally yesterday night, opened Incarna to a Page Handling Fault.
Tried downloading the client from Eve Download, it cut off at 2.5GB (on this connection, roughly 4 hours in).
Now trying reinstalling a Tyrannis download from ages ago and patching from here.
CCP, can you please stop ignoring your Mac players, it's getting to be a joke that every patch we're having to deal with repairers and fix patches for issues that were reported on SiSi and issues which you should have dealt with in-house.
It really wouldn't be that much to ask that CCP buy a couple of Macs and test on them before deploying would it? Surely the 3-5% of your customer base is worth a $5000 outlay and maybe the 6 hours that it would have taken to find all these issues with one person testing?

and this..... a little bit later....
hi, i have done....
-delete the program folder "EVE" -delete "EVE Online" in application support -delete "EVE Online Preferences" in Preferences
-new mac client download -installing -patch
....and the same prob with Strip Miner 1 Blueprints and Small Tractor Beam Blueprints. no icons, no info, same scrolling bug and in "list-view" they are, in "icon view" not. mysterious: i can produce with a Strip Miner Blue (via list view), but after the job there is no blueprint icon in hangar, but the produced strip miner is! also there is a big sort bug in station hangar icon view. icons come and go.
another thing: the salvager I icon is back (look at my last post, from above) and the locked ship target icons too.
and another one.... there is no function of anti aliasing, and if i set shader to high there are lights/mirrors, if my avatar is near or on balcony in CQ. i think there is a conflict with the station lights.

Petition it I would say.
Then again, last patch made the EVE online stuff go into ~/users/HDname/Library/Aplication Support/EVE Online
If you trash that, most likely the cache in there things may work again.

Before the next round of beta testing begins, I want to take a moment and thank the Mac community for making it possible to play Eve. There is a group of technically skilled Mac folks who tirelessly fill-in for CCP. I want you to know just how much I appreciate what you do. Of course, I mean no disrespect to the CCP Mac devs and support staff. I'm sure they are just as frustrated as we. Yet if it were not for the Mac community, and specifically those who troubleshoot each patch on the fly, Eve would not be playable.
So thanks!

Greetings
Just re-activated my account (was away since 2006).
Clean Eve Online install on a Mac Proc 5.1 (2x QuadCore 2.4 ghz) with 6 GB RAM and ATI Radeon HD 5770 /w 1 GB Ram. I havent install any other software aside Adobe Photoshop, Office, Starcraft and World of Warcraft.
EVE client keep crashing on and on. Character creation often break. (Texture disapear, 3d model disapear) Took me a good hour before I manage to make it, and even on my portrait the texture are skin over cloth.
Overall performance are pretty bad in station, input lag between my command and the game. I didnt undock yet as it crash too often for me to get there. I did a test and left it running for a long period without touching it, didnt crash. It's really when I interact with the game.
I have no performance issue in any other game / software.
Any advice?

using Imac 2010 27in version 3G intel cor i3, Radeon HD 4670 256vram Mac os 10.6.7
Cant patch from Incursion to Incarna...grinds to hault Cant download client...grinds to halt One early attempt stated files downloaded but corrupted so would not install.
Appears sending server quits after about 180mb of 5G data available.....just grinds to a halt. Have contacted ISP and speed tests for computer, router, and modem all check out ok. No other problem with any other functionality of the internet
This is my experience to date.
Naturally I have petition is trying to share this info with ccp.
What is amazing is the loyalty of so many frustrated Mac users to this game. Perhaps it is that we all are addicted by the time we have spent in our escape from reality. Some responses have seemed overly harsh....but withdrawal from any addiction can be ugly.
Heres hoping that CCP gets it together soon. Until then.....the song "Cold Turkey"...plays over and over and over and over in my brain as wander about my home and repeatedly attempt to regain access to the numbing dark environment of Eve.
Hey, heres a suggestion.....Lets go back to Incursion!!!!....that way ccp will stop loosing customers and they can go buy some Macs and actually get Incarna up and running before re-launch.

It appears to crash less upon quitting if it is run in windowed mode.
Edit:
Originally by: Clementine A The MAC OS X ~/Library folder can really get messy if applications have a bad behavior regarding its usage.
Previously, it seems that EVE preferences & cache files where located in ~/Library/Preferences and moved to ~/Library/Applications Support.
The first side effect is that all my prefs are gone after incarna patch.
The second side effect is that the updater didn't deleted the old directory, leaving more than 2GB of unused files.
The third side effect is that all CACHE files are backuped by time machine, because they're not in ~/Library/Caches. Backuping a cache is pointless & waste of disc space. EVE should put cache files in ~/Library/Caches instead of app support.
The workaround is to manually delete old preferences directory & instruct time machine to omit EVE cache directory, but that's not the behavior expected for application on a mac.

Also been having these issues in the recent past. I went to the extraordinary length of replacing my Belkin N1 Vision router with a Billion BiPac router (the latter being more VOIP friendly than the former) and that netted me... nothing, except a new router.
The client does seem to crash less during the last couple of weeks. Symptoms seem to be less severe. Now I can listen to the FC but can't participate in any discussions.
Tonight I managed to get the Windows client running under VMware Fusion 3.1.3 at upwards of 50 FPS on a 2 GB 32-bit Windows 7 Virtual Machine (with 3D extensions enabled). Works very nicely, I have to say! Quite playable, in fact.
I want to check whether the EVE voice woes still persist in that environment and may report back.

I never really had a problem with EvE Voice, but having a mac Pro and a Fiber connection to the internet might skew my results. It does seem to be much more stable, as well as the jukebox bug seemed to be better, but as i turned off sound about a year ago, i am really not sure what it is "Supposed' to sound like LOL

I'll throw in a unit of Tritanium.
Personally, as soon as I log in I turn down most graphics options, change to Windowed mode and disable Captain's Quarters. I'm not in this for the eye candy, I just want to play Eve.
At this point, everything works quite well for me with the exception of Eve Voice. This truly blows, because it basically means I can't run Incursions. Every time I join a fleet and join audio it works for like 30 seconds, then goes silent. No error messages, no disconnects, no crashing, just silence. This is recreatable ad infinitum.
TeamSpeak works perfectly for me. Ventrilo and Mumbles work flawlessly.
Why is CCP hitching itself to such a flaky and undependable voice technology when thousands of alternatives, even free, open-source ones, exist?
