So I'm pretty new to PvP in this game. My character is old but I'm still in the noob corp because I only play once a week with my buddies.
Anyways, we were running a level 3 mission, and some guy in a Raven warped in and fired a few times at my friend in his Cormorant which was fitted only for salvaging. My friend managed to warp out, but then the guy started shooting his torpedos at me. He kept shooting for a little over 15 minutes while I shot missiles at him, and then he warped away when he was into armor and my shields were still pretty high.
I don't understand why he would attack me or what he'd want from my ship. All I carry are like 7000 missiles (mostly scourge heavy, but some other damage types too) in my cargo hold. Even if he blew me up, wouldn't he have spent more money in torpedos than he gained in missiles from my ship?
Was it one of the modules on my ship he wanted? I've got:
7x Advanced 'Limos' Heavy Missile Bay I 1x Small Tractor Beam I
1x Invulnerability Field II 1x Ballistic Deflection Field II 1x Heat Dissipation Field II 3x Large Shield Extender II
1x Shield Power Relay II 2x Power Diagnostic System II 1x Ballistic Control System II
2x Large Core Field Defense Purger I 1x Large Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I
This thing has a fairly ridiculous tank at 18389 HP with 55% EM,56% Therm,67% Kin, and 69% resistances with the modules OFF (62, 81, 86, and 74% while active).
So what could POSSIBLY be the motivation in attacking my stupid mission ship? Is anything I have worth money?

By time you can fit a decent T2 tank and do level 3's, you should have realized all the motivation other EvE players need in order to actively hunt you.
Hint: it's the PewPewÖ itself. Monetary gains, with a chance of tears and fun stories to tell in Crime & Punishment are an added bonus, always secondary to the basic "I shot you down and got your ugly mug in a killmail hur hur" nature of the game.

I bet that your friend did steal from the aggressor. I assume you were in highsec while doing level 3 missions. So that is the first circumstance that comes to my mind, which allows someone to engage your friend without CONCORD showing up.
BTW, that seemed to be a good friend to not come back and help finish what got started
Edit: Forgot to add the circumstance how you earned the aggression from your friend. Could it be that you did in any way assist your friend in the encounter? Did you steal from wrecks as well?

Edited by: Mithfindel on 01/07/2010 09:25:07 Since there was no CONCORD involved, I assume that either you were at war or were in lowsec. As noted, this is at the core a PVP game, and for many this means simply shooting everything that moves (preferably before it has time to move). Many missioning ships are not well fit for PVP, and as such many people assume mission runners as easy prey to buffer their kill/death ratio and overall being ultra cool PVPers. (I seriously doubt it would be for the Good Fights.) Next time you just just need to have a tackler with you (perhaps an alternate ship for your salvaging buddy left on a station near by), tackle the attacker, break his stuff and loot what was left intact.
Edit: If you were flying with the character you posted, then it wasn't a war, since NPC corps can't be at war. So just regular lowsec piracy.

While the lewt would have been disappointing, I'd have done it too.
Though not in a friggin torp ship. I guess he was expecting to find armor-tanked battleships? I dunno.
Fact is, if you're running missions, there's a good chance you've got some faction gear on. No pirate is going to waste a midslot to fit a scanner; it's far easier to just blow you up, THEN see if it was worth it. A Mission boat is usually entirely capable of defending itself tankwise, but against a proper gank fit (i.e. not a torpraven) it finds itself capped out and floating like Lindsay Lohan after a night on the town that ends in an alley. The tank goes down, the ship goes boom, and THEN you get to see if there was a special surprise inside.
I.e. gf. Glad you had the cajones to shoot back, and looks like if you'd had a warp disruptor aboard it might have paid off for you in the end. Don't mistake though, you got lucky. ------------------------------------ I like long walks, a good book before bed, and human entrails served cold with a side order of scrap metal. |

This comment reminds me of fmerc's epic smarty geddon vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilt61ZSRIpI
"why the **** would somebody just do that?"..."he spent over 100 million to make his killboard go bloop with a bunch of retriever kills"..."which doesnt even meet half of what he had to pay"
A lot of carebear types genuinely think like this. It's pretty sad.
For most people generating isk is not the point of EVE. For them success or failure is based upon either having a good fight, creating tears, creating lulz, or farming killmails. And losing isk in those pursuits is almost irrelevant; it's isk well spent. |

You are definitely a noob if you think people need a reason to blow you up. -----

You're right, I asked him today. He said he did take stuff from them in his salvager. He didn't think it was a big deal. Apparently it was. And I agree I'm a PvP n00b, and that makes me an EVE n00b.

He shot you because he could. You never know what you had, although it didn't matter if you had anything. I asked the same questions you are when I first flew through gate camps, because they can...

And it's only that, a kill. Wonder if that POS sentry what blew me up, cares about it.
For me attacking mission runners is not PvP. It's wolf among sheep. I like better to be wolf among wolves, it tastes much more sweet to get them with their pants down, unlike mission runners who are always with their pants down. (Respect to the exceptions.)

I generally PVP and for me a kill is a kill that's all it is. When I run missions or plexes I expect someone to come along and try and kill me as well. It's not paranoia it's being safe and aware of your surroundings. With that said using a Drake unless you were alone and jumping blindly into a system. You should almost never caught. I always am aligned to celestial or a station and kiting the rats. It does two things you have an instant gtfo button and it lowers their transversal making your missiles do more damage.

I, too, am confused as to how a gank torp raven could not WTFBBQ a mission drake, especially considering the drake's gigantic sig radius.

Because "the most intelligence MMO/sandbox on the market" is infact little more than an annotated form of collectable card game. Where you collect cards (aka killmails) and post them in your collection (killboard) for other nerds to see.

Because the gank torp raven will not do its EFT dps against an ABing battlecruiser... especially if the drake pilot does follow his missionrunner instincs and keeps moving away from the raven.

Becuase the OP didn't post his fit which didn't include an AB? That said, the one attacking you was a nub as well, since he didn't fit at least one heavy neut on that setup. With a passive tank with active hardeners, a drake can be impossible to take down solo, even with an all-gank BS. If he had fited a heavy neut and shut down your hardeners it could have worked.
Note that this was likely another missionrunner with very little/no pvp experience. Be glad this lesson was cheap for you.
edit: looking at your fit again, I see he could have killed you fairly fast if he had just used em torps...
