'After' does not mean 'next' Really, you guys are getting caught by marketingspeek all the time. After can mean in 10 years time. It's the same as '1 months subs for 10 EU' does not mean it costs only 10 EU. It's what they don't say or how they word it that's often more important.
Never believe anything marketing or marketing driven comments in any company. They are professional spin masters.

I (and I think in all honesty most other Internet spaceship game fans) am not remotely arsed about Incarna itself. The problem is that we are going to get anything good until Incarna is done, and the longer it takes the longer we wait.

Edited by: S''qarpium D''igil on 08/05/2010 17:51:50 I think you'd be surprised by the number of people who ARE interested in Incarna, even if you aren't.
I'm looking forward to it in spite of the nagging feeling I have that CCP will only have it half-finished when it is finally released, and even then it won't be remotely close to having the features that would make it great. If CCP promised player-owned shops, bars, etc the same way they promised we could "rule with tyranny or benevolence," then Incarna will be underwhelming to say the least.

Its vaporware.
I mean they've been working on it for 5 years?
The average new MMORPGs don't spend that long in development.
The fact is they devoted enough time to make a demo and then basically stopped work on it.
They reallocated staff to work on various other projects within the corporation (both for EVE and for other projects).
Some might say, Oh they want to get it right, so they spending extra time on it. Do you really believe that? QA hasn't been a strong point for a long time.
When they do decide to finally put resources to it, they'll basically jam the coding etc in in about 6-8 months and then ship it out complete with bugs. Then they'll have everyone wait while they fix them.
(So how's that Dominion Lag everyone has?)

You also gotta think about another thing. The code they use for ambulation will very likely be the same code as what is used to the fps part of dust 514, and will most likely be the same system used for the WhiteWolf world of darkness game they're working on.

One of my favorite things about SWG was walking into a cantina and a ton of people being there, and then me joining in on the conversations taking place.
Incarna will finally bring that to EVE.
The only reason I don't play SWG anymore is that noone is ever around anymore.

I think it will. It will open an entire new social aspect to the game that some players seek out. Me personally...I couldn't care any less. I'm not a social player. There is an excellent chance that this will be the case. I lurk on various foums, and there is considerable interest in Incarna.
Although we are all quite happy to play EVE without avatars - by definition all current EVE subscribers are - there are a LOT of people out there who do want to see an avatar before they hand over their time and money. It doesn't even matter that much to them that there initially might not be all that much to do while outside a pod. They just want to be able to see their guy in order to identify with him. They want to "play a person, not a spaceship". I see that phrase repeated over and over.
And you know what, if it takes Incarna to get 50,000 or 100,000 new subscribers, then it's effort well spent IMO.
All this is apart from the additional gameplay possibilities that Ambulation will open up, which is the side of it that should interest the current playerbase.

QFT. Also, Sim-City, 2nd Life and COD have been done.... just sayin'. Eve is having problems with the current level of subscriptions/lag/DB issues... How is 50K or 100K more people going to help that?
Also - it may be "different people" working on the vaporware known as "WIS", Incarna or whatever, but its still coming out of CCP's single pot of money...

This.
If Eve wants to attract different players then it needs to augment its current play stile with something that's much less abstract. The game can't seriously realize its full potential without crossing this threshold.
I'm actually looking forward to Incarna (and Dust). I'm getting tired of all the "dots."

Not even close. Incarna has at least 10 years to go before it can rival the epic fail that is DN4.
Still, it would be nice to see some progress. It's been a while since they showed off the demo reel and it's been a lot of nothing since then.

You might be a little confused. They did have a news article where they mentioned they would be moving fan fest to march, giving them more time to work on the winter expansion and incarna instead of prepping for a fall fanfest...

Edited by: Tobias Xiaosen on 09/05/2010 23:04:44 Personally, I think Incarna would definitely help expand Eve. It provides a new perspective to the game, and gives players more stuff to do. Whats wrong with that? Not to mention Eve has been around for a long time now. Unless there are massive introductions of new content and gameplay, I fear that Eve will just fade away.
One of the biggest complaints I've heard for Eve from those I talk to about it that don't play is the mere fact you don't have your own character. It makes sense too when you think about it. Your character is your persona, what makes you unique in a sea of people. In Eve all you get is a little picture that means next to nothing. There is nothing unique about flying a drake or a dominix, and a "unique" fitting more often than not is a very bad idea. Basically people want more control over their character. Eve is, technically, a RPG. You can't fault them for thinking that way.
But, as it stands, I`m not entirely sure Eve could handle it. The expansion would bring in a massive amount of new players, and the stress on the servers requires new hardware. Not to mention fixing up whatever the lag monster brought by Dominion is. AND TO THOSE SAYING INCARNA IS ON SEPARATE SERVERS: Do you honestly think all those new players are going to do NOTHING but sit in stations? Give me a break. Incarna may be the reason they sign up, but to assume that will be the only thing they do in Eve is just stupid.
In the end, I kinda just wish CCP would get it over and done with. Of course, make sure everything will work first, but getting it finished will end all the speculation around it and few up the people working on it to focus more on other stuff in the game. ~ CURRENT INTERNETS = + 539735 |

Hypothetically, if CCP had more subs they could use the money to buy more hardware.
But the current lag problems are netcode related, not hardware related.

CCP is surprisingly reluctant to make a lot of money. Is there any doubt incarna would attract a lot of new subs?
And the constant excuse of "we're trying to make it perfect" is just laughable. I mean, come on, we all play this game. We all know CCP is extremely willing and capable of releasing (and then not supported) half-assed product.

That's a good point but look at it this way; I was mining then decided to warp off. My mining lasers didnt turn off as I warped away...they just stayed there, stationary as my ship took off. Looked pretty damn funny but it's a forgivable bug.
Now consider the same in Incarna. A meeting just went sour and you threaten a wardec as you get up and storm off. Problem is...your clothes are still stationary as you walk away. You walk away naked as those on the the table ROFLMAO. Hardly the effect you were looking for.
So yeah..I'd like Incarna to be perfect.

About DUST514/Unreal 3 engine.
You know the Unreal 3 engine is modular, right? Meaning they can make it part of the EVE Online Experience as a whole, for the implementation of Incarna. I would have to say that if Incarna is to be implemented into EVE, that it could very well use the Unreal 3 engine in tandem with the Trinity Engine. When you choose to spawn "Incarna" the scenerio might go like this:
1. Dock in station 2. Launch Incarna 3. Sequence initiates to pull the trinity renderer offline, unloading trinity resources. 4. Sequence initiates to load Unreal 3 renderer and resources. 5. Incarna Loads... 6. Profit (at gambling tables in Chribba the Hut's Tritanium Palace). |

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
It was introduced during fanfest 2006.Which by the way I attended.
When it comes to developement time the standards are 3-5 years depending on the seriousness of the company. And Incarna can be compared to a new game because everything in it from graphics, sounds and game engine will be new. There will also be new items and possibly things to do too. So all in all I dont think 3-4 year aint too bad. And CCP have never been the company that takes lightly on new things knowing its importance.
But yes, I am getting impatient too.

This, could be bad for the EVE market. Easy way to spend time in EVE with friends, and not worry about getting blown up, which means less ships getting blown up, which means minerals devalue because of less ships getting blown up, which means cascade failure of the player driven market of EVE.
Yes, or that could mean a million other things such as, I don't know, anything other than EVE, which people already find themselves distracted, believe it or not. Anything that isn't EVE is "a way for people to avoid space combat." I don't think Incarna will be that relevant to the existing equilibrium.

Unless there has been some major advancement, I was under the impression that once a pilot docks and "enters" the walking in station aspect, we will _not_ be able to see our ships. That is, we would not be able to walk into a hangar and see this ship the size of a 747 airplane equivalent to the Caldari Merlin. The whole sequence is to be similar to how we undock from stations today - we do not see the hangar door or the drones pulling or pushing our ship out into space.
Ship in hangar ---> "Undock" command ---> Space
Ship in hangar ---> "Enter Station" command ---> Station interiors
with ---> equal to the infamous black screen with the small notice of loading floating across.

Incarna will happen when, and IF, CCP has time for it. It's an add-on to an existing product, currently CCP's primary product (as far as I know), so don't be so surprised if you don't see it for awhile while other products are floated to the market, ie: "DUST", in an attempt to expand the revenue base for CCP.
Hopefully, bigger revenue translates to a bigger development budget. Take a look at the CCP jobs listings...lots of expansion.
If nothing else, remember that EvE expansions are free. Any new game product that comes along, in this case "DUST", is going to cost you.
Gee... suddenly waiting for a freebie like Incarna doesn't seem like such a pain in the ass, does it?

I am new to EVE, but, one of the things that really attracted my attention about Eve was the fact that it would be expanding into this area with Incarna. And I can assure you that there are others, that dont play the game, but may do when Incarna is released. It opens up a great deal of options for careers and things to do in Eve, giving a larger spectrum of people something to do other than flying around in space.
While Incarna will introduce WIS, it will still be a space game, but, it will add a layer taking it closer to being a full Science Fiction Sim. WiS could lead to the exploration of unexplored worlds and alien ruins that provide higher tech items. It will lead to people making bars and shops. I cant wait to see a dark, dingy market lining the halls of a rusty Minmatar station searching for modules and parts to tinker with.
In all, Incarna will be a great addition.

Incarna will finally bring that to EVE.
The only reason I don't play SWG anymore is that noone is ever around anymore.
No it won't. SWG had less than 40 or so cantinas. Ambulation will have 10,000+.
If you take everyone playing and spread them equally across all stations you'd have 2-3 people per bar.
SWG had quick transport. You could go from any cantina to any cantina in 5 minuntes.

But they'll still be playing a space ship after Ambulation.
Pictures sell games. Mechanics get people to pay a monthly fee.
If the game mechanics don't sell them now then then won't sell them when it's the same game mechanics with a human picture on the screen.

Other than walking there are no game mechanics annouced. That means anything you think you can do is wishful thinking. This is the problem with ambulation. They have announced no features. It's impossible to be exicited about it since we don't know what it will be.

Incarna/WIS/Ambulation was all originally announced as something "Entirely Optional" that you could "opt out of" and wouldn't even have to download the client side files if you didn't want to utilise it.
From that day, since CCP saw the large amount of people who said they would be opting out, they appear to be forcefully trying to fit incarna into the game and give it a purpose beyond a proper Avatar system. And at this rate, I doubt I'll be allowed to opt out of the download, _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

That's a flat out lie. Proof of said minigame please.
As for the others. It's a trick question. They haven't released a signle feature. They've shown some screen shots of tech demos.
That's the major problem here. People take tech demos and in their heads turn them into these huge featuer lists.
Regardless there's no way there are 50-100K people who aren't playing eve simply because they can't dance. That's in direct conflict with the game mechanics of Eve.

Ah yes, videos of up and coming 'features'. After the unfinished FW, T3, new sov system , and most importantly the pathetic 'pin the tail on the planet' excuse for PI that we're supposed to be getting excited about this patch, you're still believing CCPs hype about new features?
Incarna will be released when WoD is ready, it will be a direct port across, allowing you to change clothes and wander around empty corridors. Ofc there will always be the promise of extra stuff which they won't have had time to finish, no doubt there will be the usual 'now we have a framework that we can build on in the future' platitudes, while they rush into the next shiny expansion, that will no doubt fail to live up to expectations as well.
Eve is getting very full of 'frameworks for the future'

Not surprising, on a project this huge there is a hell of a lot of work to be done, CCP are pretty mad for begining it in the first place.
It'll be released eventually, each year brings us closer and it's like waiting for any high profile game... after all it's not really an expansion, it's a game within a game, you can't just add a few models and textures, add some fancy lighting and say it's done.
The work on Incarna really equals the work on a brand new game on the technical side of things... with a lot of Eve mechanics slapped on to bridge the gap between the two worlds. But we've seen it working, being played, it's certainly not vaporware... just another wait like Diablo 3 or Natural Selection 2. Those of us who have been gaming for more than a decade know that wait very well.
I quite like the so far revealed/planned features, though with the criminal underground tone now introduced last year I wonder which ones were changed and kept.
I'm also really curious on this winter 'Incarna related expansion'. Only thing I can think of is that we'll be able to make new avatars Incarna style, a tease of what's to come.

Actually walking in stations was first raised back in '04, not long after the game officially went retail.
To my mind CCP have pushed this back so far, it's like the child from hell they wish was never born.
Players want it, CCP have a mountain of a task to implement it, so much so that it is a loss maker for them in a big way, after all so many hours of development will at best bring in an extra 2% more players.
Walking in stations requires a huge code change, to which for all the effort it requires, the income generated is miniscule.
So as far as CCP are concerned, its one of those things that gets pushed back and pushed back and pushed back and yet again pushed back.. any maybe pushed back some more.
Will I quit eve over this ? Hell no!
But I have for a very long time treated every thing CCP says with a "yeah whatever" attitude, as they have done to us for a long time.
I play the game for fun, I dont vote in the CSM nor do i get involved with the politics, as far as I see it, when CCP really takes its player base to heart then yeah, ill play a bigger part, but for now, I'll pay to play, but I have absolutely no loyalty really left to CCP having been dragged along for so long.
If walking in stations does come out, ill rethink, until then, like a lot players, ill stick with eve, until something better comes along... bit its not for want of looking.

Wat?
I suppose this is different to the... "Oh a war dec, I'll just log on next week when its over" scenario? Or the whole station camping?
Incarna will be fantastic for those that want it, for me I will probably use it a lot as It will be more interactive than just sitting spinning my ship whilst talking, I could possibly play mini games!
Furthermore... If someone wants to PvP they will, if they don't want to lose their ship they probably will log off or won't even log on in the first place. Incarna will give the people something to do during the war decs for those that don't want to log off and waste a week subscription. I imagine it will save a lot of subs as it will give the game a "new level". I've got to the point I've got enough ISK for what I want and I don't really have any aspirations but I'm only holding onto my sub so I don't lose any training time in the hope I find something cool to do sometime soon. Incarna will actually make use of the game for me currently and I find it better and more interactive if I was to log on and socialise in a station as opposed to being logged off and have you whine about no ships to pew pew.

Not necessarily. Wormholes are entirely optional. Planetary interaction will be entirely optional. But the thing is, for each of these entirely optional features, there's something you can only get through using them. CCP's not going to force anyone to use it, but there will certainly be a carrot, as there always is.

Incarna wont be released before the WOD MMO is released.
No way in hell is CCP going to risk Incarna integration into EVE ending up as a giant cluster****, and have all that bad press weighing down on their WOD launch.
At one point they might have dreamed about making Incarna "perfect" before they released it, so there was no chance of that scenario playing out. It's safe to assume that time has passed.
When you see the WOD beta going up, we can start talkng about Incarna again.

Playable demo ≠ "teasers and vids"

CCP, would you like to C/D this?
You're completely wrong. CCP said years and years ago it was test tech from their WoD MMPOG engine.
Also the engine for an MPOG and for a FPS are vastly difference on an architectural level.
Using the Unreal 3 Renderer doesnt mean it has to be Unreal 3 netcode.
If I'm wrong about that, and I'm wrong about Incarna using Unreal 3 as it's rendering engine. Please post some links. You sure that WoD is not using the Unreal 3 engine as well? Remember the Unreal 3 renderer can be used seperately from the Unreal 3 networking. In the mean time I will try to recooperate from my speculation by doing a little searching myself.
Was waiting for the blue lines to show up and say that I'm completely wrong though.

LMAO thats what people fail to realize, Incarna isnt PI, PI was a set of goals with teaser trailers...
Incarna (As shown in the 4 other videos above) is active and working, and was PLAYABLE AT FANFEST! This isnt some cracked up idea that they're trying to figure out how it will be... The rentable offices, casino games etc were all shown off, in various demos and also tech demos, i loved the lighting tech demo actually where they showed how their implementing lighting.
