You are in an interceptor, either alone or with a couple of other buddies. A large-sized enemy fleet is sat at 0 on a gate. Your forces are either unable or unwilling to field an equal-sized force and so you engage in the honourable tactic of harassment in frigates, AFs and interceptors. This usually involves keeping safe distances to try and draw ****y enemy pilots to burn towards you, and diving in to attack stragglers seperated from the main group.
With the extreme alpha artillery now provides such tactics are next to impossible. As I said, battleships, battlecruisers and even cruisers can now provide for an immense sphere of protection against this as while, yes, it is extremely easy to orbit an artillery-armed ship at 100km to keep transveral high, attempting to engage any target within this sphere of protection will inevitably lead to your transveral against said artillery-armed vessel dipping up and down, at which point the chances of a shot hitting you rises dramatically, and it only takes one hit to do the job.
Eve is a game of dice-rolls afterall and keeping high transversal does not automatically make you immune to being hit. This is particularly obvious when trying to kite artillery-armed rats. In perhaps a dozen examples I can give you in the past week alone I have had frigates with high transverals orbiting cruiser, BC and BS rats at 100km+ distances. This will go well for 5-10 minutes until suddenly a single lucky dice roll instapops me. No warning, no time to escape, just alpha'd from full health to pod.
It's called a "wrecking hit", they happen from time to time. I had the problem occasionally before any any changes were made. Orbiting safely for a while, they can't hardly touch you, if at all, and then boom. Ship - No ship. Mad scramble to get the pod out.
Does weapon grouping contribute to the problem? Pardon the ignorance, I still don't group mine. Does the entire group get a "wrecking hit" at the same time, or is the combined damage more random?
