I'm sure most older players can remember their first days in eve.
Almost universally, for at least a while, we mined.
I remember mining for my first real frigate... a Probe. Which gave me the ability to mine with less trips back to station till I could afford to climb into a Vigil. Which I used to run combat missions till I could afford my first Mammoth. Which I then used for hauling trade goods to afford my first cruiser, a Scythe. Which mined REALLY well and became the mainstay of my wallet through my first Stabber, which allowed me to run level 2 missions with ease....
And it goes on and on from there. That was 5 years ago, and I still remember it all fondly.
One thing in there though, there were patches of mining for income, that frankly, while I was still learning the game, I'm not sure how I would have gotten by without them.
For the last few years noobs have had it easy, they started with a great frigte and a pile of cash from the starting missions, and had the skills lined up to start flying cruisers right away.
Thats going away with this patch. These guys are going to be starting with nearly no skills, and no available ore. How are new m10 players expected to get their feet under them with no chance to mine for their first ships? Back in the day we mined, are the new starter missions going to explain to them that if they want to mine they have to take a level 1 mission, kill the rats, then come back and mine in the deadspace?
With the belts being totally empty in the noob areas and the surrounding systems, I'm expecting that we will be getting a lot of confused young miners in training asking us how to get the rocks to spawn...
What are we supposed to tell them? Sorry a macro in a hulk stripmined that belt out, and will do so again as soon as a belt respawn downtime happens.... move along.

i remember those days too. i mined with my bantam and sold the ore to buy my first merlin. i was also podkilled for the first time while auto-piloting through lowsec to go get that shiny new merlin. that was before WTZ...
now days, for a young nooblet to make isk, they just need to train salvaging and fly around harvesting wrecks from belt rats or the level 1 missions. i did this on my alt and made a few million in short order. back when i was a noob it took weeks to earn enough ISK to buy my first cruiser.
they can also try those 1/10 static plexes... although they are often farmed out. ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |

Maybe they'll come away with the better impression of EvE, then.

That's a very important lesson.

well when I first started 3 years ago I didn't do any mining because I loved to fight things. So I trudged along in missions and such till i got a decent frigate, then upto a cruiser for level 2s! all was good without mining

They can mine, but they would make a pittance compared to the ISK they'll make doing the tutorial, the introductory missions and the first "epic arc" mission. Yeah, they don't have all that many skills to begin with, but have you DONE the "New Player Experience" ? They get plenty of FREE ADDITIONAL SKILLBOOKS during the tutorial, among other things, and they get decent enough rewards during the first missions too.

Truth. The m10 npe is pretty ace and tbh I think we are going to get a pretty large amount of keepers for this one simply due to them having a well scripted purpose for the first few days or weeks to keep them busy. Then when it all the npe handholding runs out they will have a good idea of eve mechanics and can actually go out and do something in the big ole sandbox.

Stealth whine thread about macros?
The New Player experience is much improved and the m10 noobs will be much better catered for than present noobs.
The new tutorials and starting experience is a great balance between the old no skill point start from scratch and slowly work up system and the present 800k of mostly useless and confusing skills. Its a big improvement, the lack of roids in caldari high sec is a totlaly separate issue.

There is plenty of instructional content out there for learning miners. A run through both Business and Industry Rookie Arcs (new players can do all 3 x 10-part "rookie arcs" now, in whatever order they like.) will set them up nicely, teaching them how to mine as well as how to make a profit from mining (through building things, using the market, etc). They'll come out of that with a bunch of knowledge and resources such as skillbooks, mining frigates and their first hauler, bless.
As for belts being mined out, the mining tutorials happen in deadspace areas where we can control things a little more. So every new player will have a chance to grasp the mechanics of mining without empty belts being an issue. One idea behind the new epic arc is that new players who end up taking it on will travel across various regions, and hopefully in doing so, find a lot of places where they can settle down and mine for a while, if they please. The more they see of the sandbox, the more they'll want to jump in and play.

If only it were possible to force the buggers to actually do the tutorial and rookie arcs! Would instantly eliminate 90% of the stupid questions in eve People who don't do the tutorial should be gagged and shot tbh

Thanks to dropbear and the people talking about the NGE changes.
All my alt slots are full with developed alts 4+years old, so have no real way to see the changes, just going on what I saw in patch notes.
And no, not a stealth macro whine... I spend a lot of time in the help channel and honestly was looking for a way of dealing with a question we hear alot there already and I think we will be hearing more of.
When we tell them they need to jump aorund a bit and find a system with belts that have not been stripmined, the reaction is not usually happy.

The only tears I'd shed over this is from listening to the crying noobs complain even more about the empty belts.
Heck, I actually contribute to the problem with my mining alt who spends most of his time in one of the few .9 systems that is not constantly stripmined.... stripmining.

I didn't mine for my first ship, i ran missions because mining bored me to tears.
Even when doing the ungodly hard rogue drone lvl 1 missions, where each drone had about 10x the hp of pirate npcs were more fun.
There's still plenty of ore for them to mine, a better tutorial that also gives them a decent 10 part mission set, and various other things to help them.
I started with 10k SP, and no training bonus. The only advantage I had was when i got a +2 implant from a storyline mission it boght and fitted my first cruiser, as well as bought me lots of skills (+2mem implant in august/sept 05, went for around 15mil).

Players will start with skills, just much fewer than before (around 50,000 sp from what I remember in the dev blog). I assume that will include racial frigate 1, spaceship command 1, mining 1, gunnery 1, small turret 1.. at least enough to use the stuff that normally comes equipped on the newbie ships.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. |

Starting sp is 50k All new player characters also start with 100% sp gain bonus which ends once they hit 1.5mill SP. 900k sp which is the current starting sp would take a new char back at release alittle over 1 month to gain. The new system would make it so you could possible gain a little over 1.5 mill sp in a month. A player who started with a 900k alt would be about ~1.8mill sp at a months time. So newer players lose a bit of possible SP gain ( also considering the lack of ability to get an attribute below 5 like you can now e.g. CHAR ). These are just guestamates but im glad at least with the new patch older char can finally change their attributes around.

OMG - How Can't they Mine?
1) Everybody can mine day 1 - it comes with your noob ship, remember? Mining frigates are just 'X' Frigate Lvl-II silly. Level TWO. A Miner I has one (1) lvl-1 skill prereq.!
You speak of Myth - There is no shortage of Ore in EVE!
2) Hulks do sweep SOME systems but it is not so hard to find roids noobs are more than satisfied with before they have an industrial. Even a 2-3 day noob with a drone and mining frigate can find and work KERNITE here in Amarr's 0.7 'No Station' systems days after Kernite's Monday and Friday spawns. Use Ombey's 2D Maps of EVE and come to Kor-Azor, Kador, or Khanid and see.
3) 30-50% of level-1 kill missions have Veldspar roids, often large ones. Veldspar is high in price, and missions are low on chance of griefers.
