I don't think you can get that kind of drone control range anyway. I think this 'fix' is because if you assigned drones to another ship, and it warps off when 150km from you you will loose control of them.

The cool thing about probes is the accuracy value is not like WITHIN 10km if that's what it says. It's EXACTLY 10km. So, warp to 10km. pop can, orbit @10km. Most cloackers do tend to move while cloaked tho, but that's not my main point.

Just a tip: The onboard scanner isn't failproof. Atleast in 0.0 you often got no hits using onboard scanner even if there is an anomality within scanrange. I've verified this serveral times.
