I am actually quite pleased with its performance. Other than the bloom it runs pretty well for emulation.
I'm still hoping CCP branches out into OpenGL though, but as far as the reward for devoting that much resource to a native client I understand their reasons for not doing it. They would spend a colossal amount of man hours making it, for only like a %10 gain in performance.
We just have to grow our userbase to where it's %40 of the Eve players. Then we can quantitatively demand it, and expect they'd listen.
In our whole alliance, there's me and one other guy who uses Mac.
By the way, to stay on topic, I seriously haven't run into anything yet. I haven't been able to get into any real combat though. I tried firing at an empire station to get aggro'd, since I know real well what my ship blowing up looks like, and yep - looked about right :P

When there is Crossover, VMWare Fusion and just generally the fact that it's CCP.. they will always have an excuse not to make a proper job of this.

Edited by: Remus Navillum on 13/01/2009 15:13:02 Seems to run pretty smoothly for me. In-station fps has dropped somewhat compared to classic, but in-space fps is equal, if not superior. Only problems I've encountered so far in about 90 minutes of play:
1) That neat cloaking effect that we see in the windows version doesn't happen. The ship just kind of... turns invisible, then turns visible again.
2) At one point while in space, my ship suddenly turned completely black. This appeared to be a shader issue rather than a texture issue. It only happened once, and that was while I was getting shot at by some rats. Moving the camera to seemingly specific angles fixed this. It stopped when I moved the ship.
3) At some point, the client's sound cut out entirely, and never came back.
4) When I restarted the client to see if these issues would persist, it hung at a black screen on startup, forcing me to reboot. This hasn't happened again so far. [EDIT] Okaaaaaay... now it hangs on startup every time I try to start it. I'll try reinstalling to see if that helps...
Also, I don't know if this is just a matter of me not setting my fan speed high enough, but the CPU load caused by premium seems monstrous compared to classic. With classic I can alt-tab and smoothly run other applications (firefox, ichat, itunes, etc), but with premium, everything outside eve is slowed to a somewhat unmanageable chug.

Looking at the crash report, the stack trace shows all symbols unmapped. Is this expected? Is there something I can do to correct that for crash dumps? I'm not really familiar with non linux/unix core dumps, so I'm not sure if that's normal. I would think not, if we're using debug builds of the various libraries...?
Anyway, I just wanted to know if I should be submitting these in a bug report or if it is useless if it isn't mapped in the stack trace (though perhaps the *.dmp is more informative despite the crash report text).
Please let me know.
It looked beautiful and ran at a decent frame rate. With other apps running in the background and at 2560x1600 with an 8800 and shadows/hdr/bloom on and turned to "high", I was still getting 45-65 fps. Outside of the station, It was about 25-45. Unfortunately, after jumping through a gate and starting to decloak, the client crashed. -- What's your EVE New Year's Resolution for 2009? |

Originally by: Reyn Atriedes I uninstalled and then reinstalled and now I'm getting the same results as if I didn't even uninstall and reinstall (hopefully defaulting the settings).
Nothing in the application itself should be changing. You shouldn't have to reinstall unless you've modified the application bundle itself. To fully reset any settings just trash the preferences. Just remove the folder at:
[your home directory]/Library/Preferences/EVE Online Preferences -- if you haven't modified which preferences folder to use!
I would think sharing the preferences between your normal client and the Beta would be a VERY bad thing. The instructions in the stickies for this forum has instructions for installing multiple clients.

iMac 20" 2.16GHz C2D, 2Gt Ram, Radeon X1600 256mt, OSX 10.4.11
Doesn't work. It get's stick in entering station (the one where there is that small window and all black, I guess this is the black screen thing. So no Premium for my iMac.
1st gen Macbook Air running Leopard First start: login window was normal, but after entering the game everything except the GUI was white. All white. If I rotated the "white interior" I could see a light source affecting the GUI. I undocked and same thing in space. So I docked and rebooted.
Second start: Ok, I'm seeing premium. Default values give me a steady 3.6 fps inside the station and 2-6fps in space (unplaybe and jiggy)
Ok, custom settings: 1024x768, no shadows, extreme cache 512mb. getting around 8-10fps in space.
The fps is a very stable though. I was at a gate looking at it, empty space and generally going all boners with the camera and the fps won't budge. It stays at approx 8fps. Looks nice (no problems), but performance is poor even compared to classic. Also the client feels much slower doing loggins, quits and everything else other than playing. Just feels...sluggish. Classic feels faster.

Runs very, very well. 121 FPS in station. 80 FPs outside. and thats with photoshop, illustrator, indesign, realplayer, acrobat professional, vlc, safari, firefox entourage, azureus, printmonitor and textedit all open at the same time (yes i was testing in work )
Only fault I can find so far is the bizzaro world you enter when warping. Very weird graphics reminiscent of the sega arcade smash hit: Space Harrier.
Hey, why change it?

For those of you wondering about the continuation of the Classic graphics client, Zulupark just published a new devblog which outlines the strategy we will be following in the future. What this means for all players, Mac users included, is that you will have more options to fine-tune the performance of EVE and get the most out of your machine. We will be working closely with Transgaming in the next couple of weeks to make sure this Premium Lite client works.

Edited by: Maria Kalista on 13/01/2009 19:27:21 Edited by: Maria Kalista on 13/01/2009 19:26:33 Ok, short test run, no fighting, missioning etc on my:
MacPro 1st gen with currently a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (I will try tomorrow to pop in the 8800, maybe that makes a difference) Mac OS 10.5.6.
Not too bad bad but I get more FPS within classic then with this premium client. It drops down to 6 FPS if I'm outside a station and fully zoomed in. Max. in station is a poor 15.8 FPS. Outside it differs from mentioned 6 FPS upto 32.4.
- No crashes, warped through 6 orso gates, finaly they look not like made out of wood
- Made a bunch of screengrabs will try to add them to a bug report.
- Some planets show a negative stratosphere, don't think thats intended.
- Biggest problem thus far: if i launch this premium client, I need to log out/ reboot to get the 'old' classic clint running.
Overal, for a beta, what I saw, not bad CCP , not bad.
(note to self to install a temp. measure app tomorrow, not soon)

Happy and suprised to say that the Beta seemed to work quite fine on my 2008 Macbook! About the same framerate and small graph glitches (missiles still fire chaff sometimes) too, some how it felt a bit sticky thou. Like a fraction of a second delays to commands or something, but otherwise quite fine. The machine did heat up a bit more than on the current client, but not too much IMO in a short test. Can't see thou what ppl are fussing about... Waiting for the final to come out, so I can set all glossy settings to lows anyway. |

most of the previously named bugs still happen in my classic client (freeze forcing cold reset/ cidercrash to DT with app still running, unknown exceptions and the lot . Since the game does run stabile on some days and crashed 10 times within 5 hours on other days I am not sure how much of those probs are client/eve related and not linked to cider or server-communication.
I would highly appreciate an email inbox for filing those bugreports available after a crash instead of posting them, but thats simply a convenience matter.
Cheers and happy (and few) debugging :)

Encountered various graphical anomalies, which are linked here.
First was the turning of engine glows into flat black textures, usually in warp. It may be ship-specific and I hear Whisper is already aware of it.
Linkage 1 Linkage 2
Second was odd and quite trippyùwhat looks like purple texture masks appear mid flight. They are usually from the closest celestial object (it seems)ùi.e. an NPC ship, a stargate, a station, or the player's own ship. Shifting the camera will make them appear or disappear. This usually only occurs in space, and quite frequentlyùmore rarely it'll happen in station (only Caldari, out of the few I docked at). The Purple Masks seemed to occur regardless of ship type, though the screenshots only show when I was in a shuttle.
Linkage 1 Linkage 2 Linkage 3 Linkage 4 Linkage 5
I had shadows on normal, HDR (and thus Bloom) off.
On the good side of things, I experienced no performance issues. No intense mission running or other activity, but through warping and docking the graphics were silky smooth. Another pilot with my same make and model however had his FPS bouncing from smooth to intolerableùso I'll count myself lucky on that one.

MacBook 2008 15" C2D 2.4Ghz 2GB 1067 DDR3 nvidia 9400M 256MB 1200x800 All eve options 'on'. ---- Frame rate in space pretty good. 30-40. Dropped badly a couple of times, but couldnt get it to reproduce. Some graphic artifacts at gates, like a glow effect that doesnt look right. Screen shotted and reported. Runs VERY hot, fans spinning up to full speed now. Black screen on undock and then crash to desktop, emergency warped away, warped back to the undock point in the test combat system, maybe 15ships in view, froze, crash. Restarted client, no sound. Zoomed right out as it warped back to the undock point again, didnt crash this time. After few moments sitting at station watch the world go by frame rate dropped to only 6/7fps. Restarting now.

Just tried it for a sec, to see how it looked. Everything seemed to be running fine. Didn't change the initial setup or fiddle with the extended graphic sttings though. Did one mining run and a warp: no problems either.
So far: nice work guys, cant wait to play it out of singularity!

So far runs beautifully. 50-60 fps on average while commuting to my mission agent. Just got an Angel mission, will see how it goes with more complex scenes. Temp running fine at 56 C (where 80+ is too hot)

I ran 'Unauthorized Military Presence' with Angle rats (lvl4 mission) using drones and my great looking navy mega.
With a dozen or so roids, and another dozen or so structures plus 30 or so rats shooting it all ran very smoothly. The lowest framerate was 17-20 fps and usually 24 or more. When the room cleared it went up to 40 fps or more.
Very playable, I'd be happy to swap over. All the textures look great and the correct kinetic and explosive missile effects worked fine.
Temps were fine, never got above 55-60 C and the cooling fan never went into overdrive. It works really well on the new iMacs it appears.
The mission briefing maps and fitting windows etc all seem to display perfectly as well, *much* better than the initial release of the mac classic client actually.
Can't wait for it to be fully released. Go for it CCP/transgames!
