CCP is pleased to announce that, effective immediately, all currently subscribed Macintosh users can participate in an open beta of the Premium graphics EVE client on our test server Singularity. This is the culmination of over a year of effort on the part of development teams at both CCP and Transgaming and we are extremely happy to see EVE running in all its splendor on the Mac OS. The recommended technical specifications for players wishing to run this Premium client are:
OS: OS X 10.5.6 ò CPU: 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo ò RAM: 1GB ò HD SPACE:6.0 GB ò NETWORK: 56k modem or better Internet connection ò VIDEO: ATI Radeon X1600 128Mb ò DVD-ROM: 2 speed DVD reader or greater required
To install the client, please download the client from this location. We recommend that you rename your already installed/existing EVE Online application to something like ôEVE Online TQö prior to installation, as the process will create a new EVE Online copy in your applications folder and could potentially overwrite an existing installation of EVE Online. The beta Premium graphics client will automatically connect to the test server Singularity. A list of items for which CCP and Transgaming welcomes feedback will be added to this thread. Any problems or issues should be reported to the developer team using a bug report.
We also recommend reading the FAQ and info thread for Singularity: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=46836 And please do bear in mind that Singularity has different rules regarding player behaviour, information for which can be found here: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=253187 |

Current Known Issues List:
1. Rainbow explosions in battle - Caused by a driver issue and resolved in OSX 10.5.6 2. Rainbow geometry in on stations and ships 3. ATI R500 Hang 4. Small geometry flicker on ships. 5. Full screen flicker just after reappearing through stargate. 6. Black screen on startup - Caused by a driver issue and resolved in OSX 10.5.6 7. "Clicking Sound" after double click 8. Flickering Bloom effect
What we would like you to test:
1. Client Performance - Fly missions, go mining, shoot each other in the FFA's in FD-MLJ. Keep an eye on your fps rates and let us know about situations where the framerate drops to unacceptable levels.
2. Graphics Bugs - Flickering textures, wrong textures, broken textures. If you see one, please screenshot it and attach the picture to a bug report. Include a description of what you were doing at the time the error occurred.
3. System Hardware - Please experiment with client settings and let us know in this forum thread of the combination of resolutions and settings that result in best performance for you. We are working on a table that will provide recommended system and game settings for as many Mac hardware variations as possible and all input regarding this is welcome. |

Heya,
Just downloaded and everything seems to be working fine, but the OS X channel is empty! Shocking, really ... I'm sure there are some other Mac guys testing out the beta ... |

What client settings are you using to run the game? Have you tried deleting the preferences folder and then trying to run the game? |

I've also had several lock-ups which required a forced shutdown. The first was undocking, the second was trying to enter warp.
I edited info.plist to point to a clean preferences folder. The only preference I modified was to set the video to run at interval one, running in windowed mode, in order to keep my processor temperature at a normal level. I tried HDR but my in-station frame rate went from 17 to 7 FPS so I turned it back off before leaving a station.
I'm using an MBP at the minimum recommended stats in this post but with 2GB of memory and plenty of hard disk left.
I'll be posting specific graphic artifacts as bugs shortly.
Now that I've had a taste of premium graphics I don't want to go back to classic. |

Stations work fine, it all looks good. As soon as I leave one though my client crashes and give me the following msg "Exception raised
Unhandled page fault on read acces to 0x00000917 at address 0x10064688. Do you wish to debug it ?"
I can choose either yes or no, but either ways it crashes the next time i log into the game. It happened more than 15 times in a row.

Filed another bug about overview icons and text not rendering correctly. If I'm looking towards the sun they're fine but when looking away they look like they've been hit by a shotgun, lots of random transparent pixels.
Session changes in space might be the trigger for the freezes. The Beta doesn't like it when I go into warp very much.
But, my Orca looks mighty fine in premium. If only they were 100 ISK on Tranquility too. Do all ships bob around like they're on water in stations or is it because I'm in a Minmatar outpost?

My system is a 24" with a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo and the ATI 2600HD GPU. I'm running w/4GB of RAM. I can run it at 1920x1200 but with no bloom. I can turn HDR on and get around 30 fps. Shadows at the highest quality. When I wanted to see the bloom though I had to step the resolution down to the 1380x840, it performed ok but that resolution just looks horrible.
Everything else seems to work, oh and I'm on 10.5.6
On the Windows 7 beta I can turn everything up to max and get a smooth framerate though. *shrugs*
Honestly with the stability issues I see others having, I'm glad it's not TQ compatible. |

i dont bother - just a macbooc (2.4ghz, but unsupported) just tiger and not the fancy leopard
the classic client works here - for a while (memory leak?) then it locks up entire machine it does not matter if i do anything or not, perhaps it locks up faster if i do something but also with just beeing docked a while - it will eventually lock up.
you can go and test your premium on those hi end boxes, while i continue to use bootcamp and run a native client (cedega still sucks, it is just an emulation, not native code) on windows xp - on the same box that ironically would not be supported under its own OS that it was built for by apple computer inc.

Well this one should perform BETTER than the current classic. I'll try in on my macbook air to see if there any hope of proper performance on older macbooks.
It's not native I know, but it's the best we are getting. The memory leak is a known issue. We all get it. Tabbing out and it will make it go crazy even faster.

What resolution are you running the game in? What are your game settings? Have you tried adjusting game settings? In which situations are you getting 15fps or is that a constant fps rate regardless of game situation?

OSX 10.5.6 includes numerous improvements to the operating system and the device drivers that are integral to the smooth running of Premium. That is why we recommend using that version of the OS. EVE Premium will run under Tiger but without the aforementioned fixes you should not expect performance on par with a machine running the latest version.
By "unsupported" do you mean that you are running an Intel GMA950 graphics chipset? If so then I would not expect Premium to run well at all. The classic client would run but under OSX it's shared memory is limited (if running Windows I believe the chipset can get more memory assigned to it, which does help running EVE). There are also the issues that the GMA950 chipset has no hardware geometry processing and that the chipset is not shader model 3.0 compatible. The Trinity 2 engine which runs Premium graphics was designed for shader model 3.0 compatible graphics chipsets. If the graphics card in your Mac does not meet the minimum hardware requirements we cannot guarantee that Premium will run. And in fact we have not officially supported running EVE on a GMA950 chipset even with the Classic client.

The Macbook Air is equipped with an Intel X3100 chipset which is more capable than the older GMA950. For one thing it supports hardware transform and lighting, is faster than the GMA950 and on the Macbook Air it has 144Mb of shared memory under OSX as opposed to the GMA950's 64Mb. Most importantly the X3100 chipset supports DirectX 9.0 and shader model 3.0 features. It is simply better able to handle high-end graphics and I would be very interested to hear how the Macbook Air handles the client.

This type of response is the reason a lot of developers cringe at the idea of sharing their work with the community until it is absolutely perfect. And, because they then don't have the community actively testing a client, they can't detect as many problems and it therefore takes much longer for them to roll it out *and* once it is, it's much lower quality. |

Come on guy's Mac users are all to often forgotten about by developers I am sure CCP have put alot of time and effort into this client. It is a beta and as such will not be perfect and comparing it to the final release is just stupid. If you are going to post somthing try and make it usefull informaion, if you still feel the need to throw your toys out of the pram the go and do it elsewhere. |

Please try to post something with value when reporting problems. Complaining about frame rate isn't a problem, its a factor of your hardware.
Thank you CCP for putting the time in for a Premium OSX client. I'll be trying this out over my lunch break.

So I've installed it and got it to run once, and then decided to adjust the graphics settings. I have an NVIDIA 8600M GT, with a 2.4GHz dual core processor, and 2 GB of ram. When I started it up the first time it ran fine, but when I start up the Premium client now, all that I get is a black screen and the cursor where the splash screen is, and nothing happens. I actually end up having to force restart my system, because when I'm in the black screen, the my system stops responding. Once all this happened, I uninstalled and then reinstalled and now I'm getting the same results as if I didn't even uninstall and reinstall (hopefully defaulting the settings). Has anybody else had this problem, and if so, how do I fix it?

Remember that this is a BETA client people. It's not the official clientùso don't judge that future client by the state of this one.
If you're playing EVE with this client, it should be for the purpose of routing out the bugsùnot playing EVE on Mac with Premium.
Back to the issue at hand: I'll also download the client and see how it works. I'm not much of a bug hunter, but anything I can do to help you guys along.

What about the beta of the Premium client for Linux?
Not only the official Premium client for both Mac and Linux was scheduled for Q1 2008, but by the summer it was promised that an open beta of the new client was almost ready for Linux too, yet no news about it.
No answers about the official Premium client (or any other subject) are answered on the Linux section of the forums, by a dev, since a long time ago, though it seems there is active development going on for Mac. So, I keep asking... what shall we -Linux users- expect? Has CCP decided to keep supporting Mac but to discontinue supporting Linux?
Please, give us some clue on what is going on.
