Hello. I have been developing a small windows program on the side every now and then, which allows you to search and download music, fast.
Downloads are done via HTTP, you can find nearly any music on there at good quality. I have made it for myself, but quite a lot of my friends have tested it, and after fixing some bugs it seems to work fine. Be aware, that you are downloading this at your own risk. In short - if you install a keylogger on your computer, don't blame me later. You'll just have to trust me (or virustotal) that this file is clean.
License: Freeware, closed source. Reason for closed source is, that it's currently not too pretty. Feel free to reverse-engineer the exe and monitor it's HTTP requests though.
Download link: http://gm.mainframe.no/stuff/search.zip
Virustotal link: http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/4ac9afc452f04de1f0110ff3ef33879f
Features: * Fast search and download * Relatively small size - 2.5mb, runs under Windows and under Wine in Linux. * Doubleclick in file list to launch associated player with mp3 files. * Extend search finds more matches for a given search, if available. * In Soviet Russia music listens you
P.S. If the address of the place I am using changes for some reason, or it dies, then the program will die with it. I try to keep it updated/functional though, as I use it myself every day. EW Guide - KB Tool - My Music |

Edited by: Ryysa on 02/09/2008 23:06:30 Thanks, although I am 100% sure there are bugs in it.
So if you manage to break it in any way or get any obscure error messages, do let me know.
Originally by: Benco97 Is there a way to stop a download in progress?
Currently not. Or well, you can just close the program. I hope your connection is not too awful.
I can add a stop button next to the download - but i'll probably do that tomorrow. |

Originally by: Bish Ounen But are you familiar with Vuse (formerly Azureus)? It's an open source project that does exactly what you want to do with this. It's available for Windows, Mac and Linux, and has active development communities working on it.
You totally don't get the point of the app. Vuze is a pretty heavy java torrent application. That uses a lot of ram and that you have to install.
This thing uses less than 10mb ram, is NOT torrent, you can use it behind restrictive firewalls that only have port 80 open, it is a no-install one-click thing.
So - I am not re-inventing the wheel. You are comparing apples to oranges, and it is clear, that you haven't tried it.
Also, the amount of music found and download speeds are MUCH better than vuze.
Originally by: Slade Trillgon With the responses from Arvald and Benco97 I want to try this, but I do not want to add anymore stuff to this computer. It can barely handle EVE right now. But the page is BM for future reference.
That's the beauty - you don't need to install it or add it. It's a simple one-click download. No install, no memory hog, just run the 2.5mb executable, put it on your desktop, voila. A pentium 1 could run it.
Originally by: Arvald oh i do have one suggestions, it would be nice if you could just set a folder for songs to be saved to automatically
Noted, along with Benco's suggestions. Please note, that to permamently save the folder, I would have to use the registry or some kind of initialization file. I don't want to do that, as that involves leaving a trace of the program on your system. However, currently, once you download one music file, it remembers the last directory used and when you start downloading the next one, offers to save into the last used directory. Originally by: Arvald oh, well that works
Well, yes, but if you close the program, it will forget the directory, as I don't want to put more trash on people's systems than they already have. But I guess you can live with it. With it's tiny memory footprint (and I don't think it leaks memory either), you can keep it loaded for longer periods of time.
Originally by: ArmedSolid Many thanks Ryysa your a leg end im far from technical and still have no idea how you pulled this off all i know is it works damn well
Well, it's just a bit of coding and searching from an internet index. But the non-technical answer is:

It makes no difference if you press enter or click it with the mouse. It just accidentally timed out once, and was fine the other time.
The index was just slow, I can try and increase the timeout value to 15 seconds on the search.
I have no issues though, still works.

Since I'll be pretty busy the coming week (yay marriage!), I will probably not update this thing for a while. Feel free to give feedback though.
Current ideas that I have for implementing: * Make "Extend Search" button change to "Stop Search" while searching and "Resume Search" after stopped, which pauses fetching bitrates and allows to download immediately. * Make downloads stoppable * Make downloads change the progress bar to "Finished" or "Failed" / "Canceled" accordingly. * Do bitrate fetching in separate threads, say 4 requests per thread, instead of being sequential (speed increase).
I will consider all other practical ideas. EW Guide - KB Tool - My Music |

Edited by: Ryysa on 08/09/2008 09:28:02 I think your connection sucks. I have no problems in 3 locations and on public WiFi. If a simple 10kb HTTP request takes more than 10 seconds on your connection, then you either need to switch ISP or stop downloading lots of ****.
P.S. If it doesn't find any results, you get a "No results" error, not a timeout error. So your music taste has nothing to do with it. EW Guide - KB Tool - My Music |

Ok.
The good: 1) Fixed search, it stopped working. 2) Sped up search by about 5-6x, program is multithreaded now 3) Reduced distribution size to 1.7mb
The bad: 1) Due to running 7 threads at a time, memory usage is now about 20mb 2) There is a memory leak of 4-20kb every time a new search is made, haven't found where it is yet. 3) Someone virustotal it and post the link.

No antivirus finds anything in it. I must be pretty damn good to hack accounts or log keys and send them to myself without a single antivirus heuristic picking it up. Also, people have monitored the connections it makes, and it makes them where I said it does. A russian contact site.
Quote: Also, isn't this considered to be an "illegal" program? Even though this program probably falls into the same gray region as torrent clients do (Probably not because this program actually facilitates direct download from only "illegal" sources) it's still questionable to say at least. And with that the existence of this thread on the eve forums...
Legally there is no difference whether you use this program or sign up for an account on the russian site. Downloading is not illegal in 90% of cases, uploading is. That is why downloading copyrighted material using torrent clients is illegal and this is perfectly fine in most countries. If it is illegal to download material that you do not own the copyright to - don't download it.
My program is literally nothing other but a web browser. If web browsers are illegal in your country, then do not download the program. Then again, if they are, how are you posting here?

Originally by: Dantes Revenge EAs for the save directory, Maybe an ini file in the application's folder could be used to save the last used download folder to reload on launch. This wouldn't be as intrusive as a registry entry and would keep the applications working data in the working directory.
Could be. Still, I have the .exe on my desktop. If it creates a .ini file, then that clutters my desktop. This should be possible to turn on/off.
Quote: An ini file could be used to extend other things to make searches easier:- Last X searches (convert search text field to combo box) which allows the user to resume a search for the same artist later.
Yes possible. It is even possible to make a predictive combobox. Though the question is - why? I have never ever needed that feature, and I have been using this program for far longer than it has been in the wild. I just think the cost to implement it is higher than the benefits.
Quote: Maybe a cross reference update to scan the dl folder and rule out existing tracks at the users discretion. This allows a user to dl many songs from the same artist without dupes unless they are looking for a better version of the same song.
No. This is feature bloat and a resource hog. I am never going to let the program scan anyone's hard drive, ever. Also, this is considered "bonkers" on an intrusiveness meter.

Changelog: * Fixed login
A little background info: Yesterday, the website I am polling bought the vk.com domain. They also implemented a new and pretty screwed up authentication. So I had to register a new account on that site + reverse engineer the new 3-way javascript/ajax auth and implement it in the program. The first search might be a bit slower now, because on the first search it will authenticate and get a cookie, then use said cookie to communicate with the server. I doubt the delay will be very noticeable though.

So don't have any copyrighted material in your possession that you don't have rights to. Simple.
Quote: While the program itself may not be illegal - using it very well may be. In fact, it almost certainly IS illegal to use it if you live in a first world country.
This sentence fails on so many levels. First of all, you have a huge logical fallacy in here. Read it yourself. "It almost certainly is, because it may be, because it may not be." Your reasoning is awful. That said, no, it's not illegal to use this program in any shape or form whatsoever. Please do familiarize yourself with the law, before making such claims. It is in fact, as "illegal" as it is to use a web browser or search engine.
Quote:
Quote:

This is where things get interesting. Different countries have different copyright laws. While there have been some attempts to create standardized international copyright laws, you may very well live in a country, which does not respect the copyright laws of other nations.
Actually, I guess you think that you are uber for some reason, and that your law applies everywhere. I got a newsflash for you. Not a single country in the world respects any other countries law as such, this is why every country has it's own laws, and we don't have a single world law. Wake up and smell the coffee, your country != World.
Quote: This is why many Linux distributions do not offer MP3 support "out of the box", but instead offer it via download from a repository (generally marked as "unsafe", "ugly", "bad" or "restricted).
In fact, most Linux distributions DO offer MP3 support "out of the box" in the form of for example mplayer. This said, the reasoning behind what you stated, is not that MP3 files are illegal, but that usage of the MP3 format itself requires licensing in some places. However, I don't see at all how this applies in any shape or form to my program. My program does not contain a MP3 decoder. It can't even read ID3 tags.
Quote: It is also generally marked with a disclaimer saying that it may be illegal to use that download due to copyright and patent laws in your country. The download is illegal in many countries (US and most countries in Europe included), but possibly legal in other countries.
This download, the program itself, is NOT illegal in ANY country where it is legal to download a browser. I am the author of the program, and herewith I release the executable of the program to the PUBLIC DOMAIN. Anyone is free to do whatever they want with it. Now this download on THIS forum is completely legal.
If you download copyrighted material using my program, which you do not own the rights to, and if those copyrights are enforced in your country by any law, then that's completely your problem and I shall NOT be held responsible. Attempting to claim otherwise would be like suing Mozilla for the download of a copyrighted file, that a user found using the Firefox web browser via the Google search engine.. Also, guns don't kill people, other people do.
Please go troll somewhere else. You obviously do not have a clue about what you talking about, and I lost count of the amount of epic fails in your post. Unlike you, I actually read the law to ensure I don't get into any trouble by making this available. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

New version (1.5.0), URL in OP.
Changelog: * Fixed search, vkontakte update broke it. * Added "Help" menu option. * Added "Check for updates" menu option.
The menu options are in the system menu (in the upper left corner). EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

Like last time.
In the future, if something breaks, try to check for updates first. This should hopefully reduce the amount of people messaging me every time it breaks.
If there are no updates, and it doesn't work, please DO message me. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

Sure :) But some "features" are more trouble than it's worth.
If you need an album, then go buy it online. Or torrent it and then buy it online. If you like someone's music that much, you should support them.
My program is not really meant to download entire albums. It's more meant to scratch an itch. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

Yeah I know... I guess it will spread by word of mouth.
The reason I didn't do autoupdate is that I could get the IP of anyone who opened the program. While one might say it's good for statistics, I'd say it's way too intrusive. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

No, I won't, because the backend is cyrillic and not UTF-8, I can not do anything about it. You see what the backend server sends you, and it sends you cyrillic. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

Stuff broke a bit again.
v1.5.3 Changelog: * Fixed song titles not showing up due to vkontakte update * Fixed sorting by quantity and time not working correctly * Extend search now automatically sorts after searching
Use the autoupdate or the link in first post. As always, check with an antivirus, so that you do not blame me if your computer blows up due to something completely unrelated to my program

One should not argue about taste. And saying that someone's frame of reference is limiting is not a very nice thing to do.
The way it works is - people upload music they like to their profile and this program searches through it. So if you can not find everything you need, chances are, that few, if any, russian speakers have heard of it. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

It's your system. I would say you have a virus on your computer, which infects search.exe.
Due to the way it is packaged, it reads part of the virus and crashes. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

Check for updates. Working fine for me.
Hate to seem clueless, but where do I check for updates?
Edit: found it. Fyi for anyone else, its right-click the top of the window.
Or just download it again from the first page since its kept up to date.
Or you can left-click the "note" icon. The easiest thing is probably to use the built-in update though, since it shows the changelog and stuff... EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

Thought I'd update what I have been working on... The good: * All HTTP requests done in background. That means when you do your initial search the GUI does not freeze up anymore. * Ability to double-click songs to download them instantly. * Storing the last used save location in the registry (anyone against it?) * Completely automatic update with a separate dialog, which updates the program instantly on startup. * Faster login by getting a login cookie from a master server. This means that even if something happens to one account that is being used for the search it will automatically switch over and the app will not break.
The bad: I have added a 120px banner on top of the search box. This is mainly to pay for the hosting costs. The banner is dynamic and I can push new banners there. I promise that there will never be anything that is not safe for work. The ads will be music related. Anyone who donated can contact me and we can arrange with you for a banner-free version, provided you do not spread it around. If the banner brings nothing, then I will remove it in a future version.
This version update will go live just after easter. Much of the functionality is already implemented, but not all and I have a lot to test since I do not want to break the program. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

Originally by: Kulmid I just have one question about using it on my university's network. I've read through the entire thread and somewhat understand how it works. I'm just curious if you think its possible my university would have a problem with me using this tool. I regularly use a firefox addon to download youtube videos to my PC and I'm wondering really, if its much different from that.
It is not any different. It uses also HTTP and port 80 to download everything. If anyone would be monitoring your traffic it would look just like a web browser. The program basically IS a web browser. A targeted one, but a web browser regardless.

Also, I am against the registry. What about appdata? ( i believe tahts where all the 'cool people' put their info, but i cant be sure..)
I think he's trying to leave as little trace of the program on the system as possible. I am even, to be honest, against registry entries. I am perfectly fine navigating a few directories to my save location every time I open the program.
I had to bite my lip and do registry. I don't know whether appdata is better or not, it's the same to me. Basically this program is going to go a bit more mainstream soon. This is why I also need to make some stuff more mainstream/easy, such as saving stuff to the registry etc. ------------------------------------
Anyway... I made version 1.6.1
Changelog: * Added automatic update * Separated GUI thread, no more lockups when searching * Help is displayed on first run * Changelog is displayed after an update is installed * Last used folder is stored in the registry * Different login
Link in OP. In the future updates will be pushed automatically.
There is also readiness to serve banners, rotate accounts and much, much more. Most of it is disabled right now. The registry key it uses is "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Music Search".
A few corner cases are not handled right now, which could occur if you fail to connect to one or the other thing. I will solve it later. For now, it is most important that as many users update as possible, so I get some test feedback. Don't get me wrong, the program is fully functional, I just need to see if any bugs slipped in.
The old version still works for now though... but if anything changes, you will have to update. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |

Long time I haven't posted anything, but here we go...
Originally by: Blane Xero Nice new name for the new update. Anything other than a name change we should know about?
A multitude of things really. This project has taken a huge amount of time over the years and I would like to get something back from it. So the name change actually makes it a "product" and the addition of the small banner makes it possible to get some $$$ to at least cover the server costs. This also means that it has got better hosting now. Faster... There are a bunch of other things, but the main idea is about selling ad space.
Originally by: Chilton Haynes I'm still using your program and all is well so I thought it was time for a friendly bump.
Also, if you accept ISK donations...what character would you like a few million sent to?
Thanks!!!
I don't really play EvE anymore. So I don't have much to do with ISK. But you can always send it to "Ryysa". ---
Since the program has it's own website at http://mulve.com now, I believe that this thread has lived it's life, as you can just post comments on the website. Thanks to those who supported me and tested the countless versions over the years. EW Guide - Music Downloader - My Music |
