dx 10 works fine... just set your wine OS to "Vista" and you can enable DX10 graphics.
Works like a charm:

but i see your point, but what if there was an option to run it DX9 or DX10
Its not that ppl cant, they DONT WANT to install VISTA crap on their machine. And atm really no point, Vista will be skipped like ME and then everyone will go to DX11 or they will release DX10 for everyone.
you have no idea what direct x 10 axacly is do you? there is a reason it doesnt work on XP. and yes, I do agree vista is shit. though I am going to run it at some point as I am not pushing my 8800 to the max.
ah plz, yea MS did a good job webbing it into VISTA code, but they are working (no, not MS) to get it out, or emulate it at some point, and it will come. Yeayea, MS tells everyone they "cant get it out" like they tried with their browser. But, more likly, DX11 comes first.
You think supporting MS for this kind of politics will do us all a favor for future products from them? DX9 works great atm and personally i am happy that more users are aware of VISTA-crap and dont install it or downgrading to XP after they got it with their computer.
EDIT: oh and dont worry, my rig is more then up to date and could run VISTA just fine, there is simply no reason to.

another 1 of thoise weak minded ppl that dont think about what they are typing, and just listen to everything being said on forums etc. I am working for a dutch game developer and trust me, it wont work on XP ever.
yes they are EMULATING it. now you got to go to google.com and look up what the word means, they are trying to emulate what direct x 10 is doing in direct x 9. it wont be the same in any way shape or form.
no GTFO the forum with your misleading information, there is alot of things wrong with vista, but windows XP wasn;t stable untill SP2 aswell.

DX 10, reason.
Wanted to also say, my wife's laptop is an Apple, it is stable sure, but I have honestly have NO crashes on my machines, this one is my main and it has never crashed. You do need alot of RAM but it works quite well, super fast, high FPS and the graphics in eve is awesome with DX 10.
You don't like Vista, ok, but you haven't tried it... Sure, DX 11 comes out they are going to offer that on XP? You're insane.

Well, this, really.
Vista x64 SP1 -> anything else, really.
or is everyone trying to run vista with a 7600GT and 1gig ram?
Look, Vista is so crappy that it doesnt even run on netbooks so they had to extend XP support to have a foot in that market too. Vista cant downgrade = bad OS. A good OS is the basis for programms, not the programm itself like Vista is.
But ok, lets not go there. We talked about grafics, and EVE is a long way off DX9 effects yet.
Vista doesn't run on notebooks? Please explain to me then how I'm posting this as im running Vista on a laptop?
That said, Vista uses a little more resources than XP does. However, a very reasonable system (800-1000) will run Vista quite well. My desktop is a Q6600, 3GB RAM, and an ATI 2400. It cost me about $900, and runs even Supcom well... well unless you try to play 7x hard AI... but I think maybe even Deep Blue would struggle a bit there.
I am curious to see how my new laptop with a C2D 2.1 GHz, 4gb ram and 3650 do though. But Vista won't bog it down too much.
Pretty much, Vista is fine, unless you a) do something to it you arent't supposed to b) use hardware/software that belongs in a museum, not a working comp.
Vista doesnt suck because it wont run on a 366MHz K2 and 256MB of RAM, with integrated video...

I can't believe that conversations like this are still happening!
I felt the same way about XP - I hated it, stuck with Win2000 until Vista RC2 came out and never looked back.
It's not like I don't know XP. I've used XP at work for the last 4 years or more. My XP machine is far laggier, can't play back itunes without stuttering when I access the network and doesn't really understand hyperthreading.
My wife's laptop came with XP installed and couldn't playback DVDs smoothly. We got a voucher for Vista with it and once I'd installed that it played DVDs back perfectly.
My Vista machine has no problems with performance.
Clearly Vista doesn't work for everyone but if you have modern hardware then you're probably better off with it. MS is dropping support for XP and it'll get like it was for Win2000 - less and less support and eventually you won't get drivers for new hardware anymore (which is when I had to switch from Win2000).

Seriously, I run Vista 64 and I'm happy with it (as far as Windows goes). If all the "OMG VISTA IS TEH SUCK!!!11" people would actually run Vista for a little while, they'd realize that it's fine.

Wow, I thought I was the only person that did this. I didn't like XP at all and I stuck with Win2000 until I built this machine and put Vista on it (the old machine that ran Win2000 is now running Linux).

Well I use OS X + XP + VISTA at work and the only one that has constant problems...is Vista. XP is a bit slow on the swing, but works. OS X feels like a powerhouse even with slower hardware. Vista...well it feels slow and tends to ...crash/freeze and do all sort of WTF moments. If you want windows...take XP.

Ye Ghods.
So let's see, all you people wanting pretty pictures and eye candy...
Are you FULLY AWARE of what that will do?
Admittedly, EvE Online is fairly easy on most systems...
that is, until you get to places like Jita, or int he middle of fleet battles.
Are you willing to play te CLIENT LAG price for your pretty pictures? It'll be pretty heavy, given how EvE's graphics engine works. And you think lag during big battles is bad now....
Get over it. Sometimes compromises have to be made, and I think CCP's smarter than to remove FUN for eyecandy.
What good is that pretty exlosion gonna be when you can't see it due to all the updating onthe client?

vista isnt ready for company use yet. just like XP after this amout of time after release.
also vista doesnt work out of the box, it needs to be tweaked. |

Vista is the worst OS ever.
It's Windows XP with eye candy and more idiotic indexing system.
Friend did some tests some time ago.
Same PC, basic desktop from acer with 2 G ram.
Ubuntu 8.04 default install, default settings, 140 mb after install.
Windows XP Professional default install, default settings, 280 mb after install (drivers included).
Vista 64 default install, default settings, 640 mb after install!
Now think about average stupid users who are buying a new PC and they know NOTHING about tweaking your system.
They use 1000 $ for PC with enough memory to use Vista while they could stick with XP and spend around 400$ and still use same eye candy if they want.
Not to mention the M$ way of security - ASK every freaking thing from the user. If the user is stupid, it will still push the YES button and install the stupid infected free program.
M$ had great plans for Vista in early 2000. One by one they dropped those features away.
Downgrade to XP, **** Vista!
1) I'm glad you and your friend wasted your life figuring out how much disk space the OS takes up. Please continue worthless tech tests.
2) Vista will want more than 2GB ram. Try 4GB. You can get 4Gb of DDR2 for under $100 shipped. You and your friend can mow a few lawns and make $100.
3) Security - I'm glad you tested Vista's 0.0012 build. Security is much cleaner with SP1 and later.
