It's already been said, but The Hunt for Red October and Das Boot seems to be the only worthwhile movies in this genre.
THfRO is a great movie and a decent adaptation of the novel. Which is a good read btw if you enjoyed the movie, they differ enough to make you keep reading... The same goes for Das Boot ofc.
...which brings me to one of my absolute favourite movies ever... Granted, I'm a huge WW2 buff (it had the right, um, tech level, if you will) and the attention to detail in this movie is astonishing, but it's a great movie even if you're not quite that nerdy... I've yet to find a release where the subs (as in subtitles, what did you think? ) are based off of the German version and not the lip-synched English version though... ofc, I've watched it enough times that together with my mediocre German I know every single line. But that's beside the point.
As for U-571... a U-boat taking on a destroyer? It's certain death even when submerged, but SURFACED?! No, movies like that are right out. If my research and subsim gaming has taught me one thing it is that when a submarine faces incoming fire something has gone terribly, terribly wrong...

It must be quite obvious that the OP is a troll. You can't possibly believe that u-571 is one of the two best sub movies ever! Like previously mentioned it was us plucky brits who grabbed the engima machine which helped us win the war...typical of american popular culture to try and change it so it was those manly americans who saved our bacon. ANYWAY.. the two best sub movies ever are clearly...Das Boot, and Hunt For Red October, with Crimson Tide and Operation Petticoat coming in a realitive 3rd and 4th

Das Boot was freakin cool. Hunt for the Red October was good(book was better).
Down Periscope was hilariously funny and always worth a watch.

U-571 is an abomination.
But The Hunt for Red October, K-19 and Crimson Tide. Not many other films about subs though.

All the good ones have been mentioned already, probably because there aren't many of them.
Das Boot is in a class of its own, but K-19, Crimson Tide and even Hunt for Red October are worth mentioning.
U-571 was *******s though.
Oh, can I nominate The Yellow Submarine Great movie, even if not so easily asssociated with the others in this thread.

Das Boot. Prefer it in miniseries format.
I'll say... The Enemy Below as well just because I don't think it's been mentioned.

Damn, I wanted to be the one to mention Operation Petticoat. Carey Grant is awesome. Err, well, was awesome. Another Great WW2 Comedy is Mr. Roberts. Its about a Tin Can though, but Hilarious. Hell, I can give you some of the best war movies ever, but u youngster's wouldn't appreciate them (I am 24 myself, but I cant find anyone my age who loves old WW2 movies, so the statement stands ).

Yes i whole heartedly accept this award. "I'd like to thank"
I've obviously been watching too much anime. I read sub as subtitles. Das Boot having subtitles didn't help either.
Anyway my topics better how many sub movies are there, not exactly a whole lot of variety there :)

Anyone mentioning U-571 in the same breath as Das Boot ought to be shot with a harpoon. :P
Anyways, Das Boot is the only movie worth it's name here, especially the german 5 hour TV-series version (which has way WAY much more tension). The hunt for Red October is an entertaining flick but it's made too much in accordance with Hollywood dramaturgy (eg. predictible), also - Sean Connery as a russian? He couldn't sound russian if so his life depended on it
One movie that I also liked is David Twohy's 'Below', very good for it's budget.
Black Hand.

I thought this one was good-ish, but yeah, it's just another blockbuster, pretty much like hunt for red october... if we're honest about it, those were crap movies.
The only submarine flick that comes close to being a real good movie, and I'm astounded it's even up for discussion, is "das Boot".
edit: and lol "operation pettycoat"
