My Starlight Horizons shares have been paying well, the last dividend was 8% and we're more than half way to the next dividend (the 1st of the month) but I have better paying prospects at the moment so I'm putting these up for auction.
10,000 Starlight Horizons Shares (originally purchased at 100k per share) Starting Bid: 100k ISK per share Minimum Volume: 1,000 shares Minimum Increment: 1k ISK per share Reserve: 106k ISK per share Ends: 2:00 EvE-time, Saturday, 4-19-08
Happy Bidding.

Thats the reserve price. He won't sell the shares for less than 106k per share just like most of the auctions that happen on the sell forums.

Edited by: Kareas on 17/04/2008 17:02:18 Well.. As you may have guessed I am rather new to these forums so pardon me. Maybe I will bid later then :)
Btw. Why is it that you do not start the auction off with a minimum of 106k instead of 100k? If you will not sell the shares for less than 106k that would seem like the smartest thing to do?

well, i had a nice long post typed up but the forums ate it. So to put it simply, to increase competition.

There's a reason starting bid and reserve are separate. Starting bid is the amount below which one absolutely will not sell the item. The reserve, on the other hand, is the price below which I don't want to sell, thus, the bids are not binding to the bidder or seller below that point but I can still feel out the market. Suppose I get valid bids (aka. above the starting) but they don't reach the reserve. I'm not bound to sell them at that price but now I at least have viable offers which I have the option to accept or pass. Plus, a low starting bid drums up more interest.

There are way too many people that use "hidden" reserves on the sell forum because they want a price check, they don't actually have the item. Back when I traded heavily it was considered a shady business practice to list a hidden reserve so I avoid them out of habit both as a buy and seller.

A hidden reserve means it's not worth bidding.
Unless you have to lock in your hidden reserve somehow it's just a sham.

*sigh* The proper solution to hidden reserves isn't to publicly announce your reserve, but not to use one at all! If you aren't using a third party there's no reason to use a reserve -- the only proper use for a reserve is as a hedge against covert treachery from the auctioneer. |
