So I decided today would be a good day to install Ubuntu. Dunno why, just figured it would be fun.
So anyhow
Ive got my disk here, and the image on my desktop if needed. I boot up the CD... and get some weird error about my screen not working or something. And some file cant see to load properly. ...
And the ubuntu forums kinda seem to suck... they need a good search on there.
Help? :(

It's been ages since I did this but when you first boot up the CD there should be a "Boot in Safe Mode" option or something like that. 3 or 4 menu options down.
Select that and it should run the installer fine. It'll boot into a Live CD version of Ubuntu with an "Install" icon on the desktop. Use that to install it.

I had one of "those" moments just a few days ago; you know when you get it in your head to fix what's not broken..
My linux skit lasted exactly 20 minutes after Ubuntu finished installing; it actually went well, no problem whatsoever. I was just left with a big "now what?" question mark. Then I reinstalled XP. __________________________________________________

Yep, pretty much the same thing i would do if i went and installed ubuntu, except i would gonna install it on a partition. I hear there is this cool thing that lets you flip between desktops on a cube like thing... I figure that would be cool when playing games in class. (using a laptop)
Other than that... No real reason to install ubuntu. Ive noticed that 99.9% of people on these forums have a signature. If you are one of the 0.1% that doesnot have a sig, copy this into your sig, and display your defiance towards people with sigs. |

Just to be clear, that isn't exclusive to Ubuntu, most recent Linux releases use that little toy. It is important to realise that just because one Linux release does not suit you, or work on your hardware without tweaking, that there are lots of other distro's out there which might. Linux is a little odd and can be daunting for new users, and for many people there really is no good reason to install it other than curiosity.
That said, the cube desktop and wobbly windows are funky. :D

I used to use linux almost exclusively, then eve came along, and no reliable way to run eve under linux. So I've been XP far the past couple of years.
Then for some reason (compiz-fusion) I installed ubuntu, and got the eye-candy working, even the 3D windows on the cube :)
Installed eve, it works! as long as you don't log out... after a reboot eve refused to work, just hung with 2 black windows :(
Then I get to Ventrilo, oh dear no linux client, tried wine but mike refuses to work, looking deeper it seems there are still issues with linux 2 years later, with OSS and Alsa. Thought these would have been sorted by now :(
So back to XP
Although I might install my favorite distro Gentoo, cos Ubuntu is a little too Fisher-Price for me.

Edited by: Saithe on 23/03/2008 10:02:52 to the op, your screen res isnt set right, or you dont have the proper drivers installed. i dont remember exactly how to do it, but you need to boot in cli and then reset the video resoulution to 1024x768. if that doesnt work, try installing the video drivers again. other than that, linux is wonderful once you get it working, simply because its not nearly as resource hungry as windows. and if you can get wine working right, you can still play your favourite games on linux. oh, and the 4 screen cube is a riot, i love it. linux is not meant to be for someone who 'buys a dell' so to speak.
-edit: i got eve to work just fine in rev 2.0 under ubunto before the 'linux client' Owing to lack of Eve-related content, signature removed. If you would like to discuss this, please mail [email protected] - Mitnal(lovespinkfont) |

That's spot on, in my case at least; there's nothing wrong with Linux, *I* simply have no need for it because the games and apps I use every day either don't run on it, or would require a level of tweaking that I'm not proficient in (nor have enough patience for).
Ubuntu is pretty easy-going, as in installation usually is a breeze and requires very little input from the user (I was pretty amazed it recognized my wifi card and allowed me to connect to the net right away for example, no network cable required); as much as I hate Windows (for a whole other set of reason), it's sadly all I need for my computing needs. __________________________________________________
