The thing is, people who have malicious intent aren't going to ask for your permission. So what happens is that you deny the good, while having no real choice over the bad.

If it means I don't get fat from eating too much, if it means my life span goes from 75 years to 750 years, if it means I don't have to suffer any of the ailments of getting old, if it means my teeth never get cavities, if it means I never loose strength over my life span.... there are too many plus's to it.
People worried about them makeing "Supermen" for war.. If everyone is a super man, then we're all back to being the same.
People worried about the nanomachines self replicateing and destroying everything, then don't make em self replicateing. Give em a life span in hours, or days, or weeks.
They WILL come. It's just inevitable. Either that or they find a way to modify our DNA so everyone gets the benefits without the machines. Eitherway the results will come.
Hopefully in my life time. I've only got about 50 years left.

That's not the way it works. A recent war, has cost the kind of sum of money that would feed and educate every child on the planet for 35 years. But that would involve propping up the 'have nots'. Why be altruistic, when you can keep the power for yourself, and prosper both in absolute, and relative comparison. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

Dude!!! America is mainly a collection of idiots from around world and still surpasses the rest of the world in many ways because its government wasn't controlling every aspect of life.
Lately the government is getting the power to control every aspect of life and when it happens it will be as crappy as the rest of the world

using nanotech for computers and machines is great, but the morality issues seem to mainly stem with biological nanotech applications... there are 2 ways it seems unethical:
1) experimentation usually involves lots of failure before success is achieved. failure when dealing with human lives is generally not acceptable. this has the work around of using animals instead... but there is a still a boundary. consider the issues involved with cloning for example.
2) if they can get everything to work as advertised, we could potentially make ourselves too powerful and "cheat nature" in some ways, or "playing god". the strongest point of this being the potential results if the technology were to fall into the wrong hands and be applied to perverted or evil purposes.
but like in many sci-fi stories that address these issues (ie- star trek), if we are to ever use this technology to greater potential our culture etc will need to come to terms with it. but even in star trek, there were those that used such technology for evil, and they dealt with them accordingly. overall i think it comes down to legislation and the ability of those that make the laws to keep up with new technology.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
What a stupid article. They didn't site a single person that thought nanno was bad. It was just a vague "some people think" which usually means no one really thinks that, but the writer has to make up some drama somewhere. Even the conclusion of the study was just a guess. Most Americans are painfully scientifically ignorant. Some 20% think the sun revolves around the earth.
And to bring it back to Eve-related: This might help some behavior out there make more sense.
Not to offend you, as I didn't particularly take offense, but what do you care of some nobody thinks it is immoral? You can live the way you want, and they will live the way they want. America was founded on individual freedoms, and while I agree new technology is not a bad thing, some think it is. And I let them. No need to attack a whole country, because they don't think like you. Right?
Originally by: Tahlma Wow, so much America and religion bashing in this thread. But rather than give in to your knee-jerk bigoted impulse, why donÆt you stop and think for a second. LetÆs consider some of the wonders of medical science.
There are diet pills that caused liver failure and death in thousands. There was a wonderful little pill to ease morning sickness in pregnant women that caused horrible birth defects. Organ replacements are wonderful but created an organ black market where the rich harvest the living bodies of the poor. Plastic surgery disasters are always good for a horror show. And letÆs not forget where our modern techniques and medical knowledge come from. Since the very beginning our medical knowledge was increased by inhuman acts. A few examples are **** GermanyÆs experiments on Jews, WW2 era JapanÆs tests on the Chinese, the Tuskegee Experiments, and MKULTRA. I could go on.
Given this information Americans and anyone else are right to be skeptical. You call them idiots for this skepticism but an intelligent person thinks not just of the positive aspects of change but the negative ones as well. We all remember PavlovÆs dog, but how many remember the little boy he did permanent damage to with his tests?
The potential benefits of this are enormous, but so are the risks. If nanobots were turned into a weapon they could kill all life on the planet from human to virus in a matter of hours. It doesnÆt even have to be intentional it could be an accident. What if self-replicating nanobots programmed to eat cancer cells suddenly couldnÆt tell the difference between cancerous cells and healthy ones? Ya, thatÆs right we all die.
But maybe youÆre rightà How dare these people question your god, the scientist?!
That isnt the debate, it's them finding it religiously immoral.
That isnt the debate, it's them finding it religiously immoral.
And he acknowledged that. He was basing his argument on the fact that everyone here was bashing the religious people, while many "scientific expansions" brought about horrible effects.
And who cares if they are basing their decisions on religion? That is their choice, and your beliefs are your own, so keep it that way.
(For the record I do not believe in religion, so don't just troll me into oblivion regarding my "religious beliefs") --
