My most funnest activity in Orbiter was to try to get a real life (or projected future) craft into the closest daisy-clipping orbit around Luna I could manage. Got the new-Delta into an 1100 km above surface, 0 eccentric orbit once. Once. From a runway takeoff at Kennedy. Once. ----- TANSTAAFL

X3 was actually playable though and the learning curve was nothing compared to that of 3000AD, which was needlessly complicated to the point that only the developer of the game could really understand it. It also hadn't gone through ANY real beta testing or QA phase afaik so was just released to the masses as a buggy, user-unfriendly mess Not to mention the graphics were horrible and sound quality absolutely disgusting in every possible meaning of the term.

Funnily enough, this applies to every single game Derek has released.

3000AD... good concept... bad outcome.
I'd rather learn to fly the space shuttle, it'd be easier. _______________________________ [ 2007.06.07 21:07:22 ] FrankyWave > ransom me guys I am joining XElas !!! |

Now, back to my original copy of BC3000AD, in all of its BSoD glory.

Bad concept, bad execution.
BC3KAD reminded me of those "design a game" pages magazines used to run once upon a time. It's "You can go anywhere and do everything!" is the sort of tripe they used to get.
It's a bad concept because there's no good way to execute it. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

I think that there is a good way to pull it off - you have to divide the game into sections. The game has a certain core element, let's say empire management. From that point there are clearly defined elements that makes up the different parts of the game, but they must be compartmentalized and, above all, optional. Don't want to command a battle yourself? Don't, but realize that not doing so will make things a bit tougher on you.
It can be done. ---------------- Tarminic - 31 Million SP in Forum Warfare Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.78.2 |

I think a game can be as open-ended and complex as ever if it's designed right and at the very least has a user-friendly interface or manual worth a damn. If such a game were designed so new players only had to do very basic things at the start: ie basic trade runs or target practice in a fighter (or not even in space at all) and slowly progress through the ranks until further options were opened up, then it wouldn't be nearly as bad imo. BC3000AD/etc failed for MANY reasons - being thrown right into the game as the commander of some prototype battleship without even knowing the controls probably didn't do it any favours
I'm still eagerly awaiting Elite 4 - but my hopes are faint as I've been doing that for the last 8 years

X3 is such a bloody easy game to play once you find a good online manual that it really isn't a good comparison to anything made by Derek Smart. Derek Smart's DESKTOP COMMANDER!

Derek Smart has ambition...
but not the resources to quite accomplish the ambition. Its too bad. People may hate the man, but its hard for me to hate someone who regularly gives his games away once they've fallen behind the technology curve. ____

well.. i played BC3000AD for like three days... and i dont get it guys. it aint harder to get into than eve for instance.
it might be a bit cumbersome when you have to click each member of your crew at a time... and cannot move them as a group, but other than that i found the controls... useable...
only problem i got, were the bugs. like having my vehicles position swapped randomly upon leaving/entering atmosphere. or shuttles landing 10m BELOW surface for no apparent reason.
that was the stuff that turned me down. not any "steep learning curve" (you wussies. whats wrong? you all american? ).
it was just frustrating as hell to have a game that had such a cool concept and so many bugs. so imho if mr., excuse me, DR. smart would have had some more people to help him with the code (i can understand that nobody wants to work for him...)it would probably have turned out a nice little niche game.
