If you're going to be picky, it's "The United Kingdom", and traditionally (although not so much any more) "The Ukraine".
Ukraine was the first one in my mind too. I guess because it starts with a "Yu" sound, to match the question "Name a country that starts with the letter U". ------

I consider myself a WW2 buff but I really do not see how it would make me more intellegent aside from being an encyclopedia of weird war facts.
Unless I'm a historian or a archeoligist I really don't see how it would benifit me unless I found a fellow buff. If someone doesn't know about that particular era I don't think of them as an idiot as I'm sure their interests are in something else.
Take mmo's for example. Some people take the time to break the game down and they build these insane mathematical formulas for damages and resistance and quality of this part or that and use all that to build a awesome setup. Other people just steal that setup off the forums. Does that make group 2 dummer?

I dont think Americans are stupid nor are they totally ignorant of the outside world, no more stupid than the average European. Lets be honest here, the UK and other European countries are smaller than some American states. Not alot happens here so we look to the outside world for our news, we are naturally curious, nosey if you want. America is different. They are not and nor have never been bothered, about the outside world on a general basis. Only when it directly concerns them. Thats not a bad thing. However, its not a good thing either as it leads to confusion and a certain ignorance on world affairs. That doesnt mean stupidity. Ive never met an American person I didnt like, there again, ive never seen an American politician that I feel I can trust, President or otherwise. Especially Presidents. Bought and paid for before they even enter office, beholden to too many intrest groups they can never do good. If you want to feel smug over americans, just look at the President. For a country full of so good natured, honest, intelligent people, they have a certain blindspot in their hearts and minds when it comes to voting. And they voted for him twice ffs.
However, I leave you with this quote, just to prove that the USA does have its dullards:
"I couldn't find London on a map if they didn't have the names of the countries. I swear to God. I don't know what nothing is. I know Italy looks like a boot. I know (Washington Redskins linebacker) London Fletcher. We did a football camp together. So I know him. That's the closest thing I know to London. He's black, so I'm sure he's not from London. I'm sure that's a coincidental name." Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder on coming to the UK for a NFL game. (my favourite part is about blacks cant come from london.. so classic)

Well, where to start. A knowledge of history, especially events, can lead to a greater understanding of TODAYS and tomorrows events. History and events, whether wars, social movements (like the industrial revolution) or political movements (facism, communism, reformation etc) have shaped the very world we live in and it continues to shape the world we live in for tomorrow. Understanding history is vital to understanding the world we are in. If you want a better tomorrow, a knowledge of the worlds past mistakes will help fashion that tomorrow. There is NOTHING more important that history, nothing. It forms the basis for ALL our knowledge, ALL our dreams and ALL our hopes, regardless of your race, colour or creed.

This solves my problem of typing the exact same thing. Realising the legacy of the Imperial age into today has greatly shifted my perception of the worlds politiosphere, for instance the Dominions I had never heard about until I started hunting for history on Wikipedia, which leads to the IRA problems, the apartheid (sp) in South Africa.

i try to discuss my views with my friends and encourage them to express their views and discuss them with other people. i think thats the only thing unimportant and (comparatively) poor people can do. slowly changing the world, iota by iota, simply by raising awareness.
having an idea of our history sure helps.

Not sure what that's trying to prove.
If you look closely at the maps, they've written the text "Iran", "France" etc. on top of Australia.
Now I'd still know it was Australia to be honest, but pick 100 people, edit it to show the 5 most stupid, or just thouse who were caught off guard while out shopping, skating whatever and had a camera stuck in their face.
I'm from England, and I reckon if you pick from amongst our chavs (in America I guess the closest term is probably something like "Redneck"), then they'd do just as badly. Probably worse. In fact they'd probably nick the camera.
It's funny, yeah, but not scientific and not generally indicative of the American people I've met.

I take offense to that. I'm redneck and I'm proud of it. I think a better translation would be ghetto.

No offence meant. It was a bit of an effort to explain "chav" to those who might not be familiar.
Perhaps in retrospect, "trailer park trash" is better.

Last time I checked jocks were the punks that played sports, lived in nice, upscale neighborhoods, drove a fancy car paid for by mommy and daddy, and were total ass's to most other people because their ego was larger than their ignorance. And they don't know how to fight unless they have atleast 2 friends with them, or a car.

Okay I will rephrase, Chavs are idiots that want to be Jocks, get fake bling and are in fact poor, generaly idiotic to the point you are amazed they can speak english and walk at the same time and wear white tracksuits EVERYWHERE. They are highly aggressive in my experienced and in Edinburgh live on council estates (that would be extremely cheap housing provided by the government). Hope that clears it up, apologies to misunderstanding the Jock culture.

Why is it we have good discussions on the days I actually decide to play EVE instead of play Forum?

I'll agree with you... slightly. Knowing subjects like geography and history may have little effect on the everyday lives of most of its students. But studying these subjects, and being educated in general, trains the mind. The study of history is not just learning dates and events. The study of geography is not just learning place names. If you've truly studied these subjects, you've considered point and counterpoint, tit-for-tat, and the cause and effect that makes our world what it is today.
Studying anything, even subjects that engineers scoff at; like history, religion, and the like, is good exercise for the mind. ---
Uganda was my first choice as well. And I try to be careful to call myself a "USer" rather than an American in forum discussions, so as not to offend our esteemed neighbors to the north.
---
"Jock," in the US, means an athletically inclined individual with no other redeeming qualities. Jocks don't just dress sporty, they don't just play sports, they are by definition excellent at sports. In non-offensive usage, "Jock" is someone who is good at any sport he cares to attempt. Social station and proclivity for violence have nothing to do with it. Although it may generally be said that Jocks like the rapings.
