Ok, so I've been playing the game for a couple of weeks now. I was bored and thought I'd have a nose around a 0.4 system in my trusty Rifter to see what it was like.
I knew what the consequences could be before I went.
So, I arrive in system and head towards a belt. See a couple of rats in ships I hadn't come across before, which is cool. Killed and looted them and went to another belt. Getting to like this....
Killed a couple more rats, but then as I was looting the wrecks, another player appeared in a Vagabond. Not really knowing which ship that was and not wanting to hang around to find out, I legged it!
Two belts later and I'm on the last one before going home. Again as I'm mid loot, the same ship appears. Oh dear. This time it gets me. I can't move anywhere even with the AB. I tried to warp but never made it. Said Vagabond proceeds to spank me from 30km away where I can't even touch him. My ship blows up and then he pods me straight away! I couldn't even warp out in the pod in time.
Oh well. The clone was up to date. I lost about 4-5 mill worth of fitted rifter and a couple of +1 implants. No biggie - I can get that back in a couple of days.
A Vagabond vs a noob Rifter is just a tad over the top, but that's my fault for being there in the first place.
I'll be going back to low-sec, in another cheap ship I can afford to lose. Although next time I'll hopefully have a bit better kit, some more skills and definitely more experience.

Have a look at the map and look for a deadend or backwater system, there are loads of systems no one goes to because there is no station. Anchor a can at a safespot and watch local. Or do what i did, go to Syndicate befriend some locals and get a crash course in low sec 0.0 and lots of fun.

Use the system scanner, as soon as you see a Vagabond, get out, they're untouchable unless you have a select few shiptypes.

lol, thats sounds just like what happened to me the other day. I thought, i know, ill tech a rifter up and go have some fun in low sec. find 3 npc cruisers and take 1 down, while other 2 shoot me along comes a vagabond, i avert attention too him and none of them can hit me as I'm moving too fast
but then they do hit me, and a couple of hits later im in a pod on my way back to station lol.

They are very touchable and you can hit them in a good bunch of ships. Specially since it has to slow down to do damage. That said, it needs a fix.

Edited by: starinpro on 04/12/2007 12:48:49 To avoid being podded, hit the warp button before your ship blows, keep hitting it and your pod will insta warp out.
You'll find people on here make low sec out to be really dangerous, the fact is only the choke points/busy systems are really dangerous.
Warp core stabilisers are very good if you don't want to stand and fight.

Tips: 1) Learn what the popular pirate systems are. They are typically near high-sec where you get a influx of people. People will gank you there. Examples: Egghelende, Amamake, Mara, Tama, etc... If you're looking to rat or something, do it in backwater places. Think what's off the beaten track, and you'll figure it out.
2) If you see ships which can catch you on scanner (which you should hit periodically), get out of system. Think Vagabonds and recons - they're a sign you need to get out.
3) If someone tried to pirate you once, he won't give up. He'll try again until he does or you leave system.
Btw, Vagabond vs 4M rifter is completely fair, he made 2M of loot for little effort. I support that pilot.

Bad luck with your first experience of lowsec, vagabonds do tend to be tricky buggers (unless the pilot is a fool). Good for you that it hasn't discouraged you though

Ah yes, lowsec. My first lowsec trip was quite similar, only that it was a ... Caldari ceptor (don't remember which one) that got me. Thought I'd be pretty safe in those belts, after all I had prepared safespots, insta-jumps for the 5 systems back to highsec (long before warp to zero) and kept my cruiser aligned all the time. I even managed to get jumped like 3 times by some other guys and escaped unharmed thanks to that.
Then I decided I would just snag that one can at 10km (long before tractor beams as well). End of my first lowsec trip :)
Lowsec is quite nice if you find a quiet system, get to know the locals, prepare safespots and be wary of your local all the time.

I would also stress you practice on getting your pod out..unless you are in a warp bubble or under extreme lag, there is no excuse for ever losing your pod, be it in empire or 0.0. With the proper application of a mouseclick and understanding of game mechanics, one can always get their pod out unharmed. Sig removed for the third time, inappropriate content. Sig Locked. My first trip to low-sec was with a friend, me in a Caracel and my friend in a Thorax. After going through several systems we realized that we were being stalked by someone who, by the looks of it, was another Thorax (it was a Deimos). We warped to a small complex and each headed opposite directions, hoping to catch the would-be pirate by surprise. He showed up and we both engaged, and I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly his shields went down. Except his armor wasn't going anywhere...shortly after that I was webbed, scrammed, and in structure. I promptly ejected my pod and warped off, but not before setting the self destruct on my Caracel. He was a bit unpleasantly surprised when he tried to ransom my ship. ---------------- Tarminic - 29 Million SP in pink Forum Warfare |

I lost a harbinger in 0.0 to a vagabond that way... NEVER think that you have time to finish off that one last rat...
Funny thing is, I think I could've killed him if I wasn't tanking 2 battleships and half way through armor already 0_o.

Great for you that you went in a cheap ship.
From the experiences of many deaths, eventually you'll be able to get the trick of not being killed in lowsec/0.0.. Best way for you now is probably to keep jumping between safespots if there's someone else in local. Or fit a cloak.

Not surprised a vagabond spanked you.
I am surprised he was able to pod you.
Nearly no vagabond pilots fit a sensor booster, and without one the lock times are pretty bad vs. pods. You should have been able to warp away. Support fixing the EVE UI | Suggest Jita fixes If you'd suicide gank yourself for what you're hauling, don't.

You can set self destruct, then eject and your ship will still splode?!?!

Yep but pirates like to win same as everyone else. I lost my first Bellicose in exactly the same way as you lost your rifter and to a Vagabond as well.
Pirates and robbers don't fight fair in RL so I don't expect them to in Eve either.
The answer here of course is to make some friends and go back in some basic T1 cruisers, then proceed to blow up his very expensive ship with its very expensive modules and rigs.

Safespots are for pussies.
Real men fit cloaking devices. :p
No, seriously. Forget safespots, a skilled prober will have that busted real fast. If you're going risky stuff in 0.0 and lowsec, such as anything except deepspace missioning/exploration exploitation and station hugging, sacrifice one high slot for a cloaking device.
Most people will just give up if they realize they're chasing a ghost.
This may change in the future with the cloak nerf, but for now, if you want a relatively safe lowsec/0.0 ride, use cloaks.
Oh, and use the map, avoid systems where a lot of ships have been destroyed in the last hour and especially if said systems also show a lot of poddings, because that's a dead giveaway for either a space fracas or a gatecamp.

Bad luck Axl, sounds like most people's first experience of low sec (mine was having my Caracal popped by a Cerberus) best advice I guess is: make a couple of 'safe spots' in any ratting system and warp to one of them if you see a nasty looking person enter local, when you arrive align to your other safe spot and keep scanning for probes and people getting close to your position.
Just as a hint to all the people that find Vaga's frustrating:
2 neuts (1 will do but you have to time it a bit better), a web, a point and an MWD on more or less any BS and you have a pretty much dead cert vaga kill if you play your cards right.... just don't be surprised when one kills your no compromise ratting fit; 9 times out of 10 it's exactly what they're set up to do.
