The real reason it isn't compatible is simple.
In DX10, the main thing Microsoft wanted to introduce is individual-application control over graphics memory, in the same way that RAM is controlled.
However, this required a number of serious kernel, hardware, and driver changes that ensured that it could never be implemented in Windows XP. Microsoft loved this idea, as its a great way to force people to upgrade.
However, one of the major graphics companies told Microsoft that there was no way in hell they'd get their drivers rewritten and card redesigned in time to handle this new feature. So it was removed from the spec. Microsoft of course was angry because now this meant DirectX 10 would be relatively easy to port to Windows XP!
So they are coming out with DirectX 10.1, intentionally obsoleting all current cards, just to force people to upgrade.

Whoa! Wait a sec...
Are you saying the 8800GTX card I bought three weeks ago, in part because it was DX10 compatible, is now not DX10 compatible? Or rather, DX10 compatible but now any card could be DX10 compatible and when DX10.1 hits the streets I'm screwed?

Damn, a buddy of mine has already ported DX10 to his Windows XP computer. If this screws it up he'll be extremely angry.

Well I don't think they're coming out any time soon, nor are games that will use DX10.1 coming any time soon. Odds are everyone will just stick to 10 because nothing will support it for years.

Edited by: Imperius Blackheart on 13/08/2007 05:30:32 Tbh they should have made Nvidia do the extra work to make their cards complant in the first place rather than backing down, ATI did the additional work and potentially could be 10.1 compatable with a firmware upgrade.
Other than that its the pain of being an early adopter, the fps you would get in a DX10 game with the best DX10 cards was pretty damn terrible anyway, its going to be second or third generation until completely DX10 games would run at playable framerates. MOST of the DX10 cards are slower in DX9 than the previous generation, by upgrading you were downgrading for a large number of people.
Keeping my X1950 for some time yet :)

maybe that's why the dx10 nvidia cards perform so much better than the ATI ones ;)

I've gotta tell you: I lol'd. I lol'd hard.
Even the die-hard Microsoft fanboys are going to have difficulty rationalising this one. Completely changing an API months after it's release, rendering all brand-new and expensive hardware obsolete? It's just fair business! --------

To be honest I think its got a lot to do with it, Microsoft told the chipset designers what they expected for DX10 and they went away to design it, both came back and said "please sir this is hard".. MS said tough get on with it.
ATI spent an age developing a way to make it work, which is why their cards were late to market, however Nvidia went back and said they wouldn't be able to release a card to launch DX10 with, and MS paniced and backed down, by that point it was too late for ATI to change plan, and Nvidia could go to launch with what they already had.

DX10.1 has a tiny new feature set and i have absolutely no doubt it pushes the Microsoft agenda but it does NOT make your DX10 card obsolete.
DX10.1 was announced ages ago, it hardly snuck up and surprised us, or shouldn't have if you were so interested in the subject.
Games will be released a year or two down the line with the tag lines DX10.1 AWESOMENESS all as a poor excuse to make you dribble and part with your cash.
To be honest having the two side by side and trying to tell them apart will be nigh on impossible, so we will rely on websites CSI'ing it and giving us the low down. Shock horror Game (A) delivers 3 extra fps!

Edited by: Miss Anthropy on 13/08/2007 13:21:43 I think Microsoft were concentrating so much on getting their DRM features working in Vista that dx10 was probably just an afterthought to entice gamers into buying the new OS. After all, Microsoft kept touting Vista as a gaming OS, designed to be better for playing games and faster than it actually turned out to be. So they probably rushed out dx10, knowing they'd release 10.1 once Vista was more stable. Vista is still beta pretty much.

i'm pretty sure most people buy graphics cards to 'do' graphics, not flaunt their bleeding edge hardware bling to the rest of us.
ps. i've got a GeForce7600GS. i'm so far from the bleeding edge i'm starting to clot.

And we will continue to have 'leet grafix' even after DX10.1's release!

Microsoft stated that they would be releasing more updates to DX10 on a regular basis back some 6months ago.
p.s. The new features in DX10.1 may not be exclusive to DX10.1 optimized cards. As with previous cards released over the years. It may be possible that some features will be able to run on older cards. It just wont be optimized for them.
Take a deep breathe everyone all is well!

And he's why.
Bad analogy. A Bmw has a chance of scoring you some *****. A cutting edge graphics card wont get you anything except a prettier picture. And for those doing making Graphics art, I can see why they might be a bit upset but I personally wouldnt think they would be to worried just a personally opinion there. If they are rendering maybe a bit worried, but if they are rendering and have a strong enough card to do dx10 capable renders, they are probably working for someone which will remedy the problem with a new card when its ready. If they arent rendering, and just doing photoshop or adverts, its not really needed anyway.

Edited by: Ealiom on 13/08/2007 14:54:39 Rendering is a CPU task.
People bought DX10 cards mainly becasue they were the best out there. I had a 6600 before, it was begining to show its age. I decided to buy a brand spanking new 8800Ultra. Oblivion, Supreme Commander those games that struggled before now breeze through machine.
I fail to see why purchasing the card is a bad move. Considering also the rush of titles we will be enjoying soon! Not to mention EVE's very own graphics update!
I think your Laugh my ass off was a bad choice
p.s. it wasnt a bad anaolgue, im talking about Power, Precision and Speed I dont know when sex came into the equation.
