Edited by: Lomex on 17/03/2004 15:38:29 Ok I got this idea from reading the superhero mmorpg boards. (thread in there has reached 150+ pages)
Basically it works thus: Every day I give a clue and you guys have to take a guess. You are only allowed one guess a day (you can change it if someone already beat you to it).
What I am looking for is a name, be it a character/ship/event/entity. All entities will be from sci-fi space opera's or the such and have specific names. Names will be drawn from a variety of sources: TV/Films/Books, but not Video Games. Prominance will be to TV/Film (its easier)
I'll keep a tally of the scores... here, as well as the current clues.
AtoningUnifex: 4 Celebon: 2 Darkii kior: 4 Fedaykin Naib: 1 Gruborian: 1 Rodj Blake: 3 ThreeD: 2 Tigersbane: 1 Valisk: 1 Valshon: 1
Congratulations to AtoningUnifex and Darkii Kior for being joint leaders after round twenty. Both will be recieving 4 million isk prize money in accordance to their scores. The rest of you will have to try harder :P
Check back in a day or two for round 21. ___________________________________________ Join in the NEW Sci-Fi Quiz |

Edited by: Celeste ***i on 23/01/2004 08:16:06 I'll take your Moya (Farscape) and raise you two cyborgs (not quite living) and a non-sentient but living ship:
1) Helva, from McCaffrey's The Ship Who Sang 2) Schussler the Cyborg, from Resnick's Santiago: A Myth of the Far Future 3) The ship built in E.T.: Book of the Green Planet by William Kotzwinkle.
All three of which pre-date Farscape by quite a bit. Films and TV are too easy. :) I'm sure there are earlier examples, but I'm also sure you were looking for Moya.

All questions have a specific answer in the form of a name.
None of this generalised "oh its, you know, them from that film staring that guy what dies a lot" answers please
I will use some judgement in accepting partial or alternative spellings. In some cases it wouldn't be impossible for an entity to have two names e.g Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker are one and the same person. ___________________________________________ Join in the NEW Sci-Fi Quiz |

I'd say its tin man from that episode of startrek where that betazoid dude became linked with it and managed to tell the living ship to destroy the approaching romulan war birds. Incidently for those who know of the living ship i'm talking about, they fed their writers a few pizzas and then used a stethescope to record the noises of digestion for the sound effect while the crew was inside "tinman".

I don't particularly want to give too many details away on answers, lest I want to use the same source again for another question (e.g. I can't use darth vaders ship now)

Edited by: AtoningUnifex on 02/02/2004 15:37:36 'Scout ship' isn't resulting in any memories stirring from my compendious sci-fi knowledge. Can we have another clue please?
And speaking of compendious knowledge: IG-88 - right scene, wrong film. It was Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back. And as far as I recall, the only bounty hunter mentioned by name was Boba Fett, to know the names of the others you would have to have done at least one of the following: a) bought the action figures; b) read the novelisation; c) read the expanded universe novels featuring bounty hunters, eg The Bounty Hunter Wars & the Tales... series.
And finally:
Quote:
What I am looking for is the name of the character. All characters will be from sci-fi space opera's or the such.
Ok, Maximillian, Tin Man, IG-88 - I'll admit they are all characters. But The Galactica? It's a non-sentient spaceship, I don't think it can be called a character.

darn, two BSG questions.
For those who didn't know: It's in the scene where the Cylons attack Caprica. Look in the lights of the city as the Cylon fighters fly over it. There, clear as day, are the words f*** off (in all CAPS). It was aired (and still is), but on TV, you cannot see it because it moves way too fast. However, in the FotoNovel, it is DEFINITELY there. As I understand it, there was some sort of dispute between the FX house and the producers. The FX folks were disgruntled and wanted to "send a message." It was largely unnoticed.

I can't remember exactly where, though I'll have a skim through a book or two. The problem with the large space operas (star trek/star wars etc..) is that sometimes they contradict themselves.
Jawa's are indeed Sentient. I believe the semi-sentient state was a classification given by the empire and backed up by non-natives. The thing is, unless you go to the deep desert the only jawa's you see are rooting through trash, as they never bring thier sandcrawlers into town.
It is still debatable as to just how much of their surroundings they do understand. They are very much into routine, and it takes them a while to learn a new idea.
Therefore they are classified (possibly wrongly) as semi-sentient.

Ok, because I'm feeling generous and bored
Darkii kior wins with the Battle Suits from Starship Troopers, which are, of course, the Mobile Infantry suits (no doubt they have a military designation - like the helmet does in the GOD AWFUL film version).
I was hoping that one would last longer, the description is missing from the begining of some versions of the book (especially the e-book version).

The movie is "A Call To Arms" and there is no mention of Babylon 5 being a receiver station in the book or the film.

Edited by: Lomex on 10/03/2004 14:35:41 Guys, my first (and only) language is english. I tend to sometimes (when I can think of one) hide subtle clues in the clues. You need not understand these subtle clues, and doubtless they give very very slight advantage.
All clues are open to a certain degree of interpretation so, for example, when I said 'reciever station' it could simply mean a station that recieves.... well anything. The Babylon project was set up to produce neutral (or as close to neutral) zones for diplomatic purposes. As such Babylon 5, being the only surviving station, is host to many diplomatic missions. You might say that they 'recieve diplomatic envoys', a perfectly correct term.
Of course this doesn't mean Fedaykin Naib is right, he isn't. But he *could* have been. Incidently Loud Bob, I'm not using computer games as a source so Crielere is unfortunately wrong. The reason I'm not using computer games as a sole source is simply that on a given market share they are not as popular, nor do they often have too rich a storyline - "oh dear lord we are being invaded lets fight back - throw in some special technology maybe a huge ship - blah".
You'll have to wait till tomorrow for another clue, I promise it'll be an easier one ___________________________________________ Join in the NEW Sci-Fi Quiz |

Congratulations Gruborian, Anubis was the correct answer.
I know the half 'breed' clue was misleading. I mean, he's supposedly half-ascended ancient. However, the Go'uld are parasites, you don't see other system lords refered to as half human. I missed the actual episode they announced this in though so I can't verify what half they are pointing at.
So after 20 rounds we have 2 current leaders: AtoningUnifex and Darkii Kior with 4 points a piece. They will each be recieving a 4 million isk prize. HA, you didn't know there were going to be prizes did you! Well... there may well be more, you just don't know.

Edited by: Setesh on 18/03/2004 04:41:33 Just to clarify, the Ancients were the first humans to evolve on Earth and eventually they ascended. Anubis was the first Goa'uld to ascend, no clue how an unenlightened parasite managed that, and the Ancients kicked his ass out. I beleive Daniel Jackson answered that in the episode where he faught Anubis over Abydos. So technicaly Anubis isn't half Ancient, he's just an ascended Goa'uld. This thread is great Lomex.
