.... For "Medical Reasons." She'll spend 40 days in her own home (a mansion) on house arrest.
Yeah right. If I could get out of work because I didn't like being at work, that'd be ****ing fantastic, but you know what? I have to be there, so she should still be in jail where she belongs.
If Paris doesn't like being in jail, maybe she shouldn't have violated the law by driving with a suspended license for drunk driving. It just goes to show that if you have money, you get preferential treatment. That's disgusting. Any normal person would have spent the full sentence in jail, and the rich and famous should receive the same treatment as any other person. They're no more important than anyone else.
This government is so crooked. I wonder how much payment the judge took to do this.

not magic, the more money, the better the lawyers. it's just sad the money doesn't benefit ppl who would need it. i mean, she was just driving a car, not that big a deal. personally, i find medical reasons a strange excuse for smaler punishments, i mean nobody in their right mind would kill other ppl, so there is the 'excuse' for one of the gratest crimes. it's disgusting. -- Tempus fugit -- |

You don't get it. The "medical reasons" for her getting out of jail was because she was crying in her cell, refused to eat, refused to sleep, and got exhausted from freaking out that she actually had to commit to her punishment by spending 40 days in jail.
What kind of punishment is spending 40 days in a ****ing mansion?!? Basically, she put on some tears, whined, and put out to get out. _______________________________________________

Boo hoo.
The average time served for ALL convictions of non-violent offenders in Los Angeles County is 10% of their imposed jail time. Paris was given 45 days in jail, and she served 5 days. This is because of overcrowding, it's that way in most of California (I live there). Making her serve the whole sentence would amount to singling her out only because she is famous, and that would be wrong.

If you are refering to the "three strikes law", this does not apply to her case. All her charges constitute one act, more or less. You missed the point of our arguements. She has not been treated differently. Everyone else in the same situation would have been let out after 5 days. See my above post.

She has been found guilty and punished. If you have a problem with the law I suggest you contact your state representative and ask him to build more prisons since California's prison system is in a huge opvercrowding crisis. It's not Hilton's fault.

Next time she might take some more notice of the dates she's banned from driving, rather that trying to get some flunky to take the fall for her.
I was disgusted at her being released, but this has restored my faith in the American justice system. Now I hope the sheriff that released her is up before the judge to explain himself.
She said she'd do the time before she went down. Probably knowing she would be out in 3 days and probably already has the book deal lined up.

i thought the same thing. but after a bit of research this is apparently common practice in LA county. The sheriff does have the authority to make these kinds of decisions. So redfalls previous comment about her being punished just because shes famous holds a bit of weight. In the past if a sheriff made this type of decision on a *normal* person, they would not be questioned. so is the judge overturning the sheriffs decision just because shes paris hilton? *shrug*
anyways, im glad shes going back to jail

[52]
Edited by: Sereifex Daku on 09/06/2007 00:43:58 Here's what I think is going on. Overcrowding is a major problem over in the states, so most non-violent criminals are quietly slipped out of prison early to ease the problem. Now, here comes a celebrity, everybody's watching her, from her mindless 13 year old minions to her enemies (safe to say most of us fit into this category )
If she is let out early then everybody realises how the system really works. Now, chances are a lot of people are already aware of this, but the government still doesn't want this to be public knowledge, lest people begin to realise that committing small crimes isn't that bad.
So this judge wants Hilton to serve out her full sentance to restore people's faith in the concept of punishment for committing crimes.
Could be utter horse****, I know, but that's what I currently believe.

Michelle Rodrigeuz (Lost, Fast and the Furious) was released from jail after serving less than one day of a 60 day sentance for almost the exact same charges. The reason for her release was overcrowding.

I do not hope that someone gets raped. That perhaps the worst thing that can happen to a person and would not wish anyone to suffer this.
However it is right that she wents back to jail. There might even something good come from a her month and half in jail, if she learns that she has to face the consequences for her actions.
All of this might have never happened if her parents would not have grown Paris into the spoiled child she is now.

Nah...my cousin only got three months, and he was actually able to leave jail during the day to go to work (small town). Her punishment was pretty standard.
I don't know about California, but in Texas DUI is for minors under 21 with any detectable alcohol, whereas DWI is for people driving with a BAC over .08. Adults don't get DUI's here. Don't know if its the same all over, actually I'm pretty sure it isn't, but it mildly annoys me when I hear the media say DUI for someone over 21. Sorta like when someone forgets that Library has two "r's" in it. Its not a Libary people.

Of all the people on the earth this woman is high up there on the list of people who deserve to be in jail, reasons are pretty simple she broke the law and got 3 DUIs 2 were when she didn't even have a license to drive anymore,I am sorry but she hasn't been singled out if you see someone who is one of the most publicized people on the planet ill-legaly driving not to mention visibly driving drunk they deserve to get caught and punished to the maximum extent of the law, now the overcrowding issue is a valid point and the fact we let so many people out in this state is wrong and should be fixed but this also means we need new prisons and jails, in turn we need to stop frickin' building track homes and start building prisons to keep these nut cases.
The drug and alchol rehab program in California is repeatedly abused by the "Stars" to avoid the law and escape jail time and even when prosecuted they are sent to mini-mum security jails that are more like health spaws ,ffs Robert Downey Jr. had satellite TV. and a damned Plasma befor they even really hit the market big, I know my uncle was the jailor.

Originally by: Dark Kavar Difference between jail and prison? I've always associated the two words as having the same meaning
Jail: county or city lockup. Used for short-term storage of criminals who are either serving short sentences for misdemeanors, or awaiting trial. Prison: State or federal facility. Used for long-term incarceration and typically of nothing but felons.
Jail is unpleasant, prison is bad news. In jail, you play a lot of Spades and try to kill time. In prison, you play a rousing game of Dodge the Bun Dart, and try not to get killed.

Guess that must be an American distinction. In Britain, the two terms are synonymous. Gaol (as is the British spelling) isn't used officially though- the main ones in England are Her Majesty's Prisons (different names in Scotland and N. Ireland, I think), and the small ones in police stations are generally just called "police cells", or some variation on that theme. --------

Its not a Libary people.
i thought the legal limit was reduced to 0.5 (in tx, im here too) because of that accident back in 00 or 01 where the 4 kids were killed by the drunk driver. i got a DWI on my 19th birthday =/ years ago. never driven drunk since.

Omg, just heard on the tv that she was suffering from "depression" and that she "was having difficulty living in a confined space." Isn't jail supposed to be that way?
TBFH I have very little sympathy for drunk drivers. Hopefully this sends a message to the rest of the "upper casses," you are not above the law. If you break it you will go to jail just like every other joe in this country who chooses to drink and drive. _______________________________ Pleese exucse any seplling erorr's in tihs psot |

Edited by: l3lind Man on 10/06/2007 19:07:35 punishments in the law suck imo, if you drink and drive you lose your license for life - maybe that would encourage people not to do it.. if you break a law the punishment should be life-altering, not 45 days in prison... its laughable..
they should find more effective ways of punishments then jailtime

Every time you are caught driving drunk they insert bamboo sticks under your nails... Or cut off a finger. Either one.

In North Carolina, there are such wonderful bonuses to driving drunk as permanent license revocation, permanent vehicle confiscation, years of jailtime, and multiple thousand dollar fines. Based upon number / severity of violations.
Then you drive over the border to South Carolina, and a passenger can have an open container so long as you pass a breathalyzer test.
