cheers for the info.
Poke ISD and ask them to add you post to the RSS feed.
Important things like this should be given coverage to prevent the "OMG its broken" factor from getting out of control.
I've been keeping our corp informed by trolling the thread and updating our forums with it.

Bah. Sounds like the changes will break my "homegrown" skill tracker spreadsheet...
If someone can clarify...
Will the xml file be updated at a fixed time, or when I first log into it?
Will the actual information on screen be affected in the same way?
Thanks... ---

Update! ETA Monday. You can read more details with my followup post later on in this thread.
Why is it still working for some of us? I can access it just as normal, evemon works. And the xml feed in my char site works.

Hm. I think only the currently trained skill is not enough. To make that useful the tool would have to make an access every few seconds or so. I don't think that would reduce the load enough...
The information a skill tool needs would at least include the skill status of the skill that was trained before to be useful. Otherwise it still needs the whole thing to be able to calculate your overall skill status.
At least if you switch from one skill to another without finishing it. And I do that quite often...

Yeah! I agree on this, I mean if there is a large number of short skills on your skillplan it won't get updated once they finish. EVEmon can only 'guess' wether a skill has finished or not, which will probably lead to a messed up skillplan. . Ö |

I think he is talking about the main export from teh database to the webserver. Its qued every hour right now, that will turn into a smaller incremental...
As for those wondering how teh XML could put a load on EvE, remember there are 160,000 accounts with 1-3 characters per account. Even done hourly that is a decent amount of data to export as a FILE and store on a hard drive.
To those that say EvEMon is still working: Have you changed skills or is it just still counting down? My EvEMon LOOKS like its working fine, except that it hasn't updated when I shifted skills 3 hours ago, its still tracking the original skill I was training <-----------> Keiron: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=427556&page=2

Unsubscribed skill training shouldn't be a problem, we've already been told that skill training stops when a sub does.
And even if it doesn't, that'd simply be a check when any que system did a 'change skills' event. Simply check when changing skills to see if it's a currently active account.
Apparently CCP simply doesn't want skill training too 'mindless', and is resisting 'automated skill development'. It does mean you have to pay a little attention to the game, and that you'll train a bit slower, since there are always 'oops' times when you don't get a new one set until after some delay.
Maybe CCP will change their mind on this, in time, maybe they won't. I'd like a que, but I don't think it's any sort of game breaker.

It keeps training. That change was only applied to Serenity, not Tranquility.

In the 'Drawing board' theres a little note that says a "skill queue" is in the works, so we might see that come up with Rev 2.0.

A thought crossed my mind and I'd like some input on it from the EVEMon and CCP developers.
In-game, there's already a character sheet. To change a skill, you're required to log into the game, and the only time the XML would change would be when you change a skill.
So why not just have the game itself generate an XML based on the character sheet and dump it into some random directory? EVEMon could be modified to monitor that file and reload it upon a new access/modification time. In addition to that, the 'manual implant' problem could be solved, since you could also easily include that information into the XML. The game already pulls the character sheet data from the server itself every time you log in, so why not just streamline the process of passing information to EVEMon?
Pros: 1) Takes the majority of the load off of the web server. 2) Allows for nearly instantaneous updates to EVEMon. 3) Implants could be automatically updated, meaning if you switch jump clones/get podded it would reflect that automatically be reflected in EVEMon.
Cons: 1) No instantaneous updates from remote that don't have EVE installed, but you could simply have EVEMon do it the "new way" by default, but still allow manual importation of the XML saved from the website.
I don't know how the EVE client itself handles character sheet data, but I don't see how incorporating a simple XML generator into the game itself would be too difficult, and it would solve a lot of the web server load problems associated with the character sheet.
Disclaimer: Not a developer, but it seems that the way it's currently set up, the server is doing the same work twice when it should only be doing it once.
Just my two cents.

I agree to the client generating XML instead of the webserver, I would be happier with that aswell. Because then no extra logins or account information would be needed for 3rd party tools to fetch information. If you use another computer for your tools, then either share out the directory, or have eve client host a simple random port (or configurable) http server internally.
I still dream of the day when we can use 2 monitors, one for the 3d stuff, and the other for the GUI stuff.
And as for skill queing, wish they would hurry up, my skill plans are so screwed because I don't have a way to train the tiny skills other than when I am online, and that is like 2-3 times a week.

I just spoke with her, and seeing as the full XML file will still have the same format it'll work with inEVE.net. You just won't be able to grab an updated XML file as often as before. The same applies for EVEMon synchronisation. So nothing really changes.

Thanks. I'd still like to know if the update on the "big xml" is going to be done at a fixed time throughout the day, or if the timer starts from when I downloaded it last...can anyone confirm? ---

Please tell me we are still on track for this to be fixed tommorow? Pretty please with sugar on top? This is killing me not being able to check skills in training, have a couple accounts at a crucial point in training to get into specific ships/mods for very specific reasons this week.

Would it be possible to get the characters balance in the small XML file? I (and possibly others) have been using the XML file to see if a character has sold something, and therefore will need to login to that character. It saved having to login to Jita 4 times a day to check.

That not enough to monitor skill changes. It requires permanent monitoring from runned EVEmon on permanent internet connection.
Not all players have that type of connection and not all players can afford 24/7 runned EVEmon.
So I rate that changes as next headshot from CCP to their subscribers. -- . |

You can view your characters wallet balance from the character selection screen, saving you from having to log into the lagfest that is Jita.

Why do people crab about the loss of something they dont pay for?
i propose this... on any account that a user uses to post a rant about the broken functionality that they dont pay for... permanently disable it

I'm making a few changes to the way the web site provides data to EVEMon and other clients. Instead of one huge XML file that contains all of the data which you can hit hourly, it's being broken down into two (for now, more later?) files with their own access times...
So we're going from a system that worked adequately after tinkering with it broke it to a system thats adversely different.... why not simply go back to the system that worked rather than producing more tinkering thats not guaranteed to solve the problem then solve actual issues like the fact the on site database and newbie guides haven't been updated in several months and are quite out of date.
Sorry to be harsh, but the old saying holds true, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Roll back to the backups simple solution.
But that's the point, it no longer works adequately with so much data and network demand. They are making necessary changes for scalability.

Allow evemon to connect to the local eve client to get updates directly from that when it is running. Skill changes would be updated in evemon immediately. When eve isn't running, then evemon connects to the website...?
