Hi All, (first post)
I'm pushing 2.8 SP and am looking at getting an Amarr BS. I like the idea of sniping (leaning toward those BS with at least one missile slot to draw peeps in). I've currently got -nada- lg. laser skills, -bleh- missile skills, and good overall gunnery skills... (high learning skills will quickly eat into this tho). Just about done with BS 3. I've also got a Harb and ~100M isk.
1) Am I better off sticking with the Harb (lacking missile slot)? Can the Harb snipe at all?
2) Can I get a short outline on the Amarr BSs? What they're good at, what to avoid, and what might be in my best interest.
Overall, I'd like to increase money making ability (salving and mining currently), dabble in PVP, and move into a more impressive ship. I'd like to hang out in .2-.3 with the rest of my corp without worrying about getting rolled by some passing raven.
Sorry for being such a noob.

Oh also, I've been thinking about going in the reduced signature-target painting direction w/ Halo implants. Is this a viable direction for PVP? Is it unrealistic with larger ships like BSs?
Thanks,

My advice: stick to the Harb. 2.8M SP is way too low to fly BSes even half-effectively, more so the Amarr ones.

I've seen a couple replies in other threads like that. Not to imply argument but can you give me a ballpark estimation of about when I should starting looking at BSs in terms of SP?
Thanks,

I'm not sure how many SPs this would come to, but you'd want Amarr BS to 4, all gunnery skills at 4, all armor tanking skills at 4 (at least) and all cap skills at 4-5, so that's quite a bit of SP. I'm at 8M sp and only use my BSes to run level 3s solo and to assist in gang level 4s.

Amarr bs's are nasty when it comes sp. You need RCU IIs which requires level 5 in a rank 2 skill and also need AWU IV for sniping setups. Otherwise you'll end filling your lows with three regular RCUs just to power the tachs(on a geddon).

controlled burst 5, your 2 cap skills to 5. BS4, everything in gunnery to 4 atleast (would suggest sharpshooter, rapid fire, motion prediction to 5 asap). Advanced weapon upgrades would help you fit it. Ability to use t2 reps and hardners. allot of isk.
This is not even mentioning the t2 large lasers which require t2 medium and small laser skills.
That is to say the least, their are a bunch of support skills (navigation, electronics, engineering, etc).
What ever I say is my own views and not of my corp. |

I do Sansha/Blood Covenant level 4 missions half asleep in my Apocalypse with only about 3.5mil SP. I'm sure it'd be a bit harder for Angels and the like, but it's not that hard. I think in 2 weeks of missioning about 1-3 missions a day I've only had to warp out once.
PvP though, yea, definitely want it all up as high as you can.

The thing about most BS, and Amarr in particular is that flying them without your support skills and gunnery skills at 4-5 really makes them easy targets for skilled players.
If you really feel you need to fly a bs, your available isk really limits you to a armageddon after insurance and fittings are factored in. It can be a great damage dealing ship for ratting and small gang pvp, but without the gunnery skills, it really isn't going to do much.
I would imagine that you would find your bc a more useful ship at the moment, and replacing it won't hurt as bad.

I have nearly 28 mil SP with almost 8 mil SP in gunnery (laser specialized) and I still don't think it's enough for laser BS. The Harbinger can snipe with T2 beams and Aurora crystals but considering you have around 2.8 mil SP I don't think you can use those yet. This is what I would recommend, train up for T2 med beams if you want to snipe and go with a beamed out Harbinger. If you really want a fun PVP ship though, I'm convinced the Curse is the way to go, for Amarr, but then you would need drone skills. I think at this point in your Eve career you should specialize, so if you want to go lasers train up the T2 lasers for the Harbinger, or better (when you have some isk) a Zealot.

BS are skill-intensive these days, as a large number of people have the skills and experience to mess them up in any number of smaller ships, if the BS pilot is relatively new. On top of that, your age marks you out as a target.
You need a lot of skills to fly BS in PVP. Fitting skills just about maxed, mechanic skills maxed (for armour tanks), various engineering skills very high (especially relating to cap), all applicable gunnery skills at L4 or above, reasonably good drone skills too. Training the BS skill to L4 is the least of your problems, you will need everything from Energy Management to Surgical Strike up there.
I would really start PVPing in frigates and cruisers, move up to battlecruisers later, and get to BS at the end of the year. When you do, you will find the Armageddon rocks. But with millions of SPs in the right areas.

lots of good advice - thanks everyone.
I've got an average of 3 in most of the skills you've mentioned, so at least I'm going the right direction.
I think holding off is the way to go, focusing my attentions on skills and working missions/agents. I just wish there was a little more money in the stuff I'm doing... then again I can't buy SP so -meh-.
Thanks again,

honestly you have a pretty cool ship in the harbinger or prophecy and everything you skill up for that aside from the battlecruiser skill itself will be a neccesary skillup for you battleship, so if you want something bigger and badder then a cruiser and dont want to go the tech 2 route take the battlecruiser for a while and train up those tanking gunnery and other skills, then when they are all good and dandy start training amarr battleship to 4, sell your harbinger buy a geddon/abbadon and have some fun in a bs :) 8-10 mil atleast to not lose the ship often
