The only way these forums could be kick-arse on a smartphone is if you couldn't see them at all. That's how bad these forums are.

Oh well, waddaya know. The forums are kick arse on an iPhone! They're marginally useful on the iPad.
There is nothing wrong with the new forums. Do not attempt to adjust your CSS. CCP control the HTML code. If they want to make the font bigger, they will update the font-face tag. CCP waste the vertical. CCP waste the horizontal. They can make it look cool, they can present 40 items per page. For the next year, sit quietly and CCP will control all that you see and read. You are about to participate in awesomeness made corporeal. Why you will participate in that is a mystery that reaches beyond the outer limits.

Problem 5 : You ditched all the content of the old forums.
So far, the only news about it we ever got was that all old content will be simply forsaken, shoved in the soon-to-be "read-only" old forums. Was it really THAT difficult to commit to at least EVENTUALLY migrating all the old threads and topics from the old forum to the new one ? WHY ?!? Seriously, WHY ? Fix ? Even if it takes a few days, or weeks, or heck, even months, as long as you do migrate them one day it would be fine.
So let me guess, you mad because your threadnaught was deleted? |

Why the huge avatar pictures? Are CCP that desperate to show off their new character graphics? Makes up for dwindling amounts of gameplay I suppose.
Looks like they have managed to nerf one of the last bits of Eve that I enjoyed; should have seen it coming really. |

Hell, I managed to fix some issues client-side in less than an hour. So a few days GÇö much less a few months GÇö is already more time than it should take. |

Akita T wrote:[Problem 10 : No way to see which topics you already viewed recently.
Sure, the "open to last unread post" feature is nifty. But that still doesn't do much good in knowing which threads you read recently, and which ones you didn't, not at a quick glance anyway... and with some people not exactly naming their threads properly, you don't always know which ones you already read. Fix : color-coding for (partially) read topics, to differentiate from those not recently read at all. That's sooo annoying.
Brennivargur wrote: When I open a thread, i go to the last page.... wtf? Maybe I'd actually like to read the post! Clicking the "thread bar" seems to take you to the last page of the thread. Might make *some* sense if I could actually see which threads I already looked at. But mostly I want to read the OP first, anyways, so getting to the first page of the thread by clicking on the thread bar makes more sense than having to aim for the actual thread titel.
Clicking the thread titel apparently takes me to the first page or just some random page mid thread (not depending on which page I last visited).
At least my forum char stays selected in the new forums. |

Overall I like the forums but have two massive complaints
Why the massive gaps and wasted space? See screenshot http://img685.imageshack.us/f/fourms.jpg/
Why is it when I click a thread I am dumped half way through the thread? For example clicking on this thread for the first time dumped me page 8 out of 11.

Agreed and round one of 'testing' exposed all those issues as well as others that fell on deaf ears so they could increase the font size, make the breadcrumbs more visible and a handful of other things that should have taken less than a day over the course of roughly two weeks.

Note to devs: on a touch device (such as iOS, Android, or whatever Microsoft is calling their stuff today), the breadcrumbs are far too close to the top navigation buttons. Tapping on the breadcrumbs (eg: to get to "EVE Communication Center" from this thread) can randomly have me opening up the Calendar, Mail, Contacts or Profile.
"Home -+ EVE Forums" is redundant, since you have to be in the Forums to see the breadcrumbs. The buttons for Home and Forums are already in the top navigation buttons.
There's plenty of room for "Forum Rules" and "Archives" in the bar at the bottom which contains "Website Terms of Service" and "Privacy Policy".

Speak for yourself I guess. I mean, does anyone who has a cell NOT have a smartphone these days? And if they don't, why not? Just sayin'.
Even if everyone who has a cell phone has a smartphone was true.. Why are these forums designed to make them look good on those rather then... oh I don't know.... a browser window in EVE itself!... Have you tried to view it in the in-game browser? On the old forums you could have a smaller window. These new ones force it to be wider or you have to slide left/right to read it in the SAME sized window as all you'd need in the old forum.
Why roll this out to cater to a minority of users in the hope that the majority will start using it on the lesser used medium. I'm all for making the option available, but come on... 20% of the total available screen size is actually posting content, and that's being generous..
I have 1920x1080 screen, at full size this thread from the TOP of the post all the way down to the bottom window is only 732x575. Which comes to just over 20% of the full screen size is actual content..
Want to know it was on the old form? 40%...
So, half the screen real-estate of useful content. Forced larger in-game browser window for forum enjoyment while playing the game without having to scroll left/right to read it.

GǪand the fact that I could fix those issues client-side in one sitting, whereas they couldn't do it server-side over two testing phases and a number of months make them less competent than me. So "incompetent" fits the bill quite nicely. |

Akita T wrote: Problem 4 : Readability sucks.
On top of the fact that you're eating from the both vertical and horizontal display areas, SOMEHOW you managed to make the actual text EVEN LESS READABLE than it was on the old forums. I can't put a finger on it and say it's the font type or size or colours chosen for text and background, or maybe the weird contrast between the huge portrait plus large text beside it and the tiny text for the actual posts... but fact remains, IT IS HARDER TO READ. Fix : look at the old forum, copy the style as it was there. It's THAT simple.
This. Oh, so very much this.
Reading this on OSX (which manages to render small sized fonts pretty blurry in the first place) gives me eye strain after about 5 seconds -- it's also the first site that made me hunt for the zoom shortcut.
Then I read that comment about constructive criticism SO THERE I LOOKED AT THE SOURCE AND IT LOOKED BACK AT ME.
Nice job CCP, I'm suddenly very very happy with my place of work.
Speaking of abyss: You override font size to 11px. Why would you do that to me? .
The document pretends to be XHTML1.0 transitional while using a strict dtd. I've never ever seen that mistake, honestly I don't even know how it's possible to screw up a dtd declaration; it's straight copy and paste. You trying to troll my chrome? Speaking of which, what's up with the table based design?
How about setting line-height to, say, 1.2em? Makes lines not trying to eat the one above. It's a good thing. And what's with the font declarations?
Quote: font-family: arial,helvetica,"lucida grande",verdana,sans-serif
This will never apply. Lucida grande is a nice font, but every OS that will have it will also provide arial or helvetica. So, why?
Speaking of view source:
Quote: #TODO# Remove tag soup
Honestly, the whole thing -- with it's inline style declarations, it's total obliviousness to anything HTML or CSS, the total lack of adhering to user interface design principles, it's apparent targeting of internet explorer 6 -- is pretty atrocious in my professional (and more importantly, drunk) opinion. |
