I'm a very new player, and I've been using a Merlin for running Level 1 kill missions in high-sec space. The setup I have is working great, so I thought I'd share it with any other new and/or prospective Merlin pilots out there who might be interested. Here's what I have:
High: 2x Standard Missle Launcher I 2x 125mm Railgun I
Mid: 1x 1MN Afterburner I 1x Small Shield Booster I (2 empty Mid-Slots)
Low: 2x Power Diagnostic System I
I load the railguns with Lead Charges (about 10-15km ideal range) and the Launchers with Sabertooth and/or Flameburst light missiles (max range about 15km).
I have been able to complete every Level 1 kill mission that I've been assigned so far without so much as losing 1/4 of my shield. (I haven't been offered Worlds Collide, which I understand might be a much greater challenge.)
This setup is super cheap as it only uses basic modules, and it is very easy to attain skill-wise. I had all the skills and ISK needed after about 3 or 4 days worth of casual playing and training. About the hardest skill to get is the Energy Grid Upgrades level 2 that is needed to run the PDS I's. It's what makes the setup work, however. I must fit two of them to have enough power to run all the high- and mid-slot mods I have equipped.

Hey Osric,
You have a pretty solid setup going there. The one suggestion I would make is regarding your two mid slots.
Depending on your CPU remaining, try fitting 2 shield resistance amplifiers. Use This Thread Here to determine what two amplifiers to use and also what type of missiles to use.
If you have any other questions shoot me a line in game :)
Good Luck

Thanks for the replies. So if I'm fighting Guristas, I should load missiles that do primarily Kinetic damage, and (try to) fit shield mods that boost my shield's resistance to both kinetic and thermal damage?

You're right on target with those last comments Osric. You seem to have a fair bit more sense than the average noob and should do well in your Merlin.

my setup somewhat similar, i upgrade as i can afford-
highs- 2x limos standard missile bays (bloodclaw) / 1x 125mm compressed coil gun (lead)
meds- coldgas arcjet thruster / 2x named resistance amplifiers = thermal and kinetic (cant run hardeners yet) / small converse I deflection catalyzer
lows- Power Diagnostic System I, Ballistic Control System I
have completed all level 1 missions, and in most cases i only have the skills required to run the module. (21k sp's in missiles, 6000 sp's in gunnery)
2 more weeks on learning skills to go.

I wanted to vouch for the setup here. I'm maybe ten days in and have only seen one mission I couldn't complete with my Merlin. If you have the skills & power (train engineering if short on power):
High: 2x 125mm Rails (you want your optimal range >15km) 2x Standard Missile Launchers (skills to get range out to at least 20km'ish)
Mid: 1x Afterburner (train the skill in addition to buying the one that offers the largest max velocity you can afford) 1x Sheild Booster (safety net, you really shouldn't need it much) 2x Cap Rechargers (these will let you run the afterburner full time without much cap drain)
Low: Power Diagnostic Units preferred for defensive and cap charger properties in addition to power. If you need to eek out some power use Reactor Control Units instead.
If you were to take out one of the cap chargers you still won't run into many situations where you'd be running low.
When Worlds Collide (the one mission I couldn't complete in the Merlin): Buy a Condor. Put the biggest afterburner on it you can afford. Warp to 0km, hit the afterburner, and dash for the gate. Use the gate and expect to take some damage. Same deal: Dash for the last gate, straight line, full afterburner. It'll be close, but you can make it through. There's only a few npc's that must be killed in the last deadspace. I'd recommend ranged weapons for this part as your sheild/armor will be low from running through the second deadspace pocket.

Setup I got now for doing some missions is this:
High: 2x Named Ion Blaster 2x Standard Missile Launcher I
Med: 1x Named Afterburner 1x Small Shield Extender 2x Named Resistance Amplifiers (Thermal and kinetic for me, change them if you're facing other rats)
Low: 2x Power Diagnostics System
This leaves me with about 1.7 mw powergrid left.
Think this is a fairly solid setup for ratting/lvl 1 missions. Nice thing about passive tank is that you quickly tell if you can tank something, and can easilly tell when to warp out.

Here is my current setup I am using for running missions / clearing asteroid belts
High: 2x 'Malkuth' Standard Missile Launcher I 2x 125mm Prototype I Gauss Gun
Mid: 1x Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters 1x Small Shield Booster II 2x Small Shield Extender II
Low: Local Power Plant Manager: Diagnostic System I Mark I Generator Refitting: Reaction Control
Seems to make Level 1 missions pretty easy, and have been able to run some Level 2 missions with this ship as well. Comments welcome...

If you are having powergrid issues you may also want to look at a MAP (micro aux powercore) they take a little more skill but I use them all the time on my frig setups.

Try this Merlin setup, I run level TWO combat missions in this (and win).
2x Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannons (Antimatter) 1x E5 Prototype Energy Vampire 1x 0E-5200 Rocket Launcher
Cold-Gas thrusters Shield boost amp I Small shield booster II Fixed Parallel Link-Cap
Local Hull Conversion Overdrive Injector Reactor Control Unit
Afterburner in, hit the nos and weapons, turn off ab, use shield booster when needed, repeat until all dead.
Risky, hell of a fun ride, proven. Best part, this setup only costs me 3mil, so even if I die, it's cheap. But I haven't.

Personally, I'd use a kestrel. Rocket launchers, afterburner, shield extenders/resistance amps, ballistic controls/power diags. Upgrade to caracal with assault launchers as soon as you can afford + fly it, train up more tanking/missile skills, switch to heavy launchers when needed, and eventually go for drake and/or raven.
This route prepares you very well in both skills and know-how to be a complete mission-*****

I would say the best way for a new player to tank a shield focused frigate is with extenders rather than resistance amps.
Also diagnostics in lows increase survivability and on some ships allow for the fitting over a over sized extender and that were the recharge rate relay kicks in.

Erm... possible necro.
But I'd say 2 125mm railguns, 2 SMs, afterburner, and whatever you want for a shield tank (MAPCs are nice if you need lots of powergrid, but try to train engineering first). ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

At the moment the setup is expensive with the boosters but small shield booster I's should be good enough to save on isk. HI: 2 x 150MM Railgun I 2 x Standard Missile Launcher I
MED: 1 x Small Shield Booster II 3 x Small Azeotropic Ward Salubrity I
Low: 2 x Power Diagnostic System I
This setup gives good offensive options and a nice 1328HP armour. Could perhaps drop a shield booster and add some resistance or something else, maybe an invulnerability field if you have the power grid for it.

If you are using Blasters as your guns...I recommend using Rockets for your missiles. They have shorter range but do better damage. |

If you made your char have Missile bombardment V, I'd suggest a kestrel, fit Standard launchers, and enjoy killing lvl 1 missions at absurd speed.

I'm a noob as well...but what will you say about this feat:
High: 2x standart launchers(depends on mission) 2x 125mm "Scout" cannon(iridium or iron)
Med: 2x small shield extenders 1x resistance amplifier(-32.5%,type depends on mission, prefer thermal) 1x small converse 1 deflection catalyzer(shieldbooster)
Low: 1x Ballistic control system I 1x Damage control I
With the above fit i have all shield resistanses (except EM)aproximately 52-68%....and damage control helps to survive if i really need to warp away...
may be any suggestions?

Hello I am fairly new myself, yet I can up with this set up for a Merlin. High Slots 2x 125mm Prtotype 1 guass gun 2x Arbalest Standard Misle Launcher
Med Slots Sm Shild Boost Sm Shield Extender
Low Slots 2x Power Diagnostic System 1
I came up with a Power Usage of 34 And a CPU usage of 151.. Then depending on your skills depending on power usage and CPU usage.

Edited by: Kadoes Khan on 21/08/2007 21:52:59 This is what I'm using, no troubles at all with lvl1's, I've been doing some lvl2s with it and it's still holding up although some have gotten a little hairy.
2x named ion blasters 2x named rocket launchers
1x named AB 3x Small shield extender II
2x SPR
It's a lazy mans setup and it works well on the merlin with the boosted resists, I'm working on T2 guns right now and I meant switch to a MAPC in a low and get a MSE in the med and replace a SSE with a shield recharger but I'm to lazy to see if it fits until I finish some training.
EDIT: I should mention that you'll need to be decently trained in eng, elec, weapon upgrades and normal passive shield tanking stuff.
The overall DPS is pretty solid, I use lead(I think... the ones with no range modifier) charges and get about 2500 optimal and I'm at about 8000 range on my rockets. I also have a kestrel which does even better DPS but the merlin has a really solid tank and makes missions so much easier, especially when you combine it with a bit of speed tanking. -=^=- "Someday the world will recognize the genius in my insanity." |

Played on EFT for a while with the merlin...finally foud a good setup i need to test (this alt is 2 days old :P)
[Hi] 2x150mm Rails(Lead), 2xStd Launchers(mission specific) [Med] 1x(named)Med Ext, 2xSpecific Ampli, 1xShield Boost [Low] 2xMAPC
Pro Long range, good tank and good dps...only for mish obviusly Cons Need electronics, engineering & energy management IV, but these are all very useful skills, so the training time it's worth (4-5 days anyway...not weeks...)

But yes, that setup looks rather stable, and you seem to have more use of that gray mass between your ears than most noobs.

I have to point out one small thing: on blasters, there's only one real ammo: antimatter. The difference between a 1km optimal and a 2.5km optimal is closed within seconds, and AM does so much more damage.
Basically, load up with antimatter and go for a tighter orbit if you must - orbit at 1km should see you hitting preety much all the time.
At any rate, your setup seems solid, and I suppose a MSE should be *****ble if you use a MAPC, just not 100% sure it'd actually boost your tank, would have to load up EFT.

You know...this thread is still inside the sticky ship setup index. Instead of a pointless "pro" complain, since setups are, how can i say, "interesting" for noobs like me, post something more clever, maybe helping the update of the ship setup index. If you want i can start a bare new thread that contains the same things i've already posted, but i simply don't see any point in it...
Sorry for the spam, i hope my setup will help somebody

I haven't been playing Eve for a long time yet (only for one month to be specific). Well, I got a Merlin running as an active tank. It serves well on lvl1 agent missions. Haven't had a problem yet doing them.
Next step for me would be experimenting with different setups and trying a passive setup for a change. So I played around with EFT and came up to the following setups:
--- 2x Light Electron Blaster I 1x Rocket Launcher I 1x Salvager 2x Small Shield Extender I 1x Magnetic Scattering Amplifier I 1x 10MN Afterburner I 2x Micro Auxiliary Power Core I
This setup gives me 887 shield, 831 speed and resists of 45,4/32/49/66 with my current skills. ---
2x Standard Missle Lauchner I 1x 150mm Railgun I 1x Salvager I 2x Medium "Canyon" Shield Extender 1x Magnetic Scattering Amplifier I 1x Heat Dissipation Amplifier I 2x Micro Auxiliary Power Core I
This setup gives me 2382 shield and 45,4/57,4/49/66 resists with my current skills. ---
2x Standard Missle Lauchner I 1x 150mm "Scout" I Accelerator Cannon 1x Salvager I 1x 1MN Afterburner I 1x Medium Shield Extender II 1x Magnetic Scattering Amplifier I 1x Heat Dissipation Amplifier I 2x Micro Auxiliary Power Core I
This setup gives me 1595 shield, 437 speed and 45,4/57,4/49/66 resists with my current skills. It's a mixture of the other two extrem configs above. ---
Does any of these setups make sense? Would you recommend any of them? It's for mission running only (no pvp). Could any of these setups be used for soloing a lvl2 mission?

The middle fit looks pretty good, but the "Canyon" extenders are a COSMOS item, and thus are quite rare and VERY expensive. They've got great fitting reqs as you've noticed, but they can be hard to find.
