I currently use 4 miner 2's and I am wondering about what types of drones I will need to survive in a 0.5 sec place. If i have drones 5 and I want to mine as much as i can w/out losing my ship.

a set of mining drones and a set of med/light drones light drones can take down rats in 0.5 easy enough ----------------------------------------- TCC Diplomatic core + combat pilot talk or shoot, makes no difference to me :) |

But how many of each? 3 light 2 mine or 3 light 2 mine?

2 sets. 5 miners 5 hammerheads (that fits, right?)
when the rats spawn, call in the miners, send out the Hammers. they will handily handle anything down to .5 without missing a beat. then in come the Hammer's, out go the Miners to grind that ore.

One trick i use with the vexor is to put a small remote repairer in the last slot. Alot of the time the rats will attack the same drone and you can have that one drone return and orbit and keep it alive with most anything in .5 space beating on it.

0.5 is frigates only so 5 light drones will eat anything you will come across especially if you have a couple of levels of Drone Interfacing and combat drones
so 5 x Mining Drones = 50m3 5 x HobGoblins (or equivalent) = 25m3

Im sorry to be rude but your wrong :P
5 x Mining Drones = 25m3 5 x Hammerheads = 50m3
and there and destroyers aswell as frigates in .5 space

and you are right they are only 5m3
been so long since i used a mining drone
still, firm believer 5 lights will be fine in 0.5 though .... have mined for ages with 5 lights in my retriever

I own a vexor, but don't mine with it.
However, you may want to try this setup.
Just another one to consider.

I use my Mining Vexor in corp mines when security is not a huge problem. Like the link posted says, it can get a very big pull with the right skills... In addition to the info and setup given there, think about bringing a tractor beam. Then you can potter around the belt picking off the roids your barges can not reach etc., mining straight into the can.. makes for a mobile little miner.
PS Definitely work on getting Tech 2 mining drones if mining in a vex sounds uber appealing to you.

I've been mining 0.5 space in a vexor for the last month. I keep 5 light/med em drones to kill the sansha's when they spawn and 5 mining drone IIs. The leap from tech 1 to tech 2 mining drones is massive, nearly 75% more yield going from mining drones 4 and tech 1 drones to mining drones 5 with tech 2 drones.
Also got drone interfacing to 3 and last night got cruisers to 4. That puts me at 288 m3 / min from the 4 lasers and 350 m3 / min from the drones for a total of 638 which is more than a retriever can pull with two strip miners.
The set of light drones will have no problem eating the frigates that spawn in 0.5, and a small repper is sufficient to repair any damage they might do to your armor before they die. You would really have to sit there not repping and not attacking them with your drones for several minutes for them to pop a vexor.

5 Hobgoblins/Hammerheads for defense on a Vexor will keep you in silk against belt rats all the way down to .1 space (you'd be doomed against most any player pirate, but that's pretty much true of any mining set up). In .5, the rats barely have time to say "Oh <bleep>" before being reduced to their component atoms through massive overkill.
The only drawback is that when you give mining drones a recall order, they don't drop off their ore when they get back. I'm not sure if whatever ore they've picked up is simply lost, or if they stockpile it until they are full before delivering a full load...I really hope the ore isn't just thrown away.

The drones don't give you any when recalled because they have not mined any yet. They are on a 1 min cycle and work like ice miners instead of mining lasers. If you interrupt them they don't extract any ore. it is only at the moment that they return to your ship that the ore is sucked out of the rock and deposited into your hold.
It is kind of funny seeing the drones all start heading back to the ship, and the roid is sitting there left alone, then when the drones reach your ship *POP* goes the roid even though nothing is touching it.
