I'm relatively new to the game and have become fond of the Stratios. My only concern is that with the Stratios, is it primarily a PvP ship, or can it be used in PvE without any hinderance? I've been told its a cloak ship and mostly a close ranged attack vessel that uses drones, but I'm mostly just going to be using it for mining op security and running around belt helping out people who are under attack. So is this ship worth trying to fit it for PvE? Or would I find something more suitable elsewhere?
Any and all tips / information would be helpful, thanks for your time.

It's quite nice for DED 3 and 4 sites in low sec. I'm honestly not sure I'd use it for anything else. Maybe a random 5 if you come across that.
What do you mean by mining op security by the way? You're never going to be able to save a miner from another player, but you might -- just might -- wind up dead yourself as well. The best security you can provide is to stay a jump out from a dead end system and warn them when anyone comes in that might be headed their way. But I guess if you're just keeping NPCs off of them you could do it in whatever; I'd probably look at a tier 3 BC for low sec work.
In high sec, ignore all of the above. Kill rats with the drones on the mining ships while you... I don't know, maybe you're in low running DED 3-5s in a Stratios? |

I will be completely honest, I'm not 100% sure what I'd be doing in it, I currently sport an Omen, and I mostly just run around killing rats, but other than that, I just mostly mine in game, Haven't really tried any of the harder missions and not skilled enough to go anywhere near lowsec. The more I type the more I'm thinking this ship might just be a waste of a buy because I probably will never use it to its fullest potential. |

Yeah, I'd go out on a limb and say you're not really in the market for one.
I'd also say though: this is the time to get yourself to low sec. Now. Right now. If you're liquid enough to buy a Stratios you can afford to lose a few dozen frigates. It's the perfect time to build some PvP skills while it's still cheap, and at some point everyone needs to get over the fear of losing a ship. The sooner the better as far as I'm concerned. |

If you're newish, have a stratios, and are just tooling around, you can take advantage of the ships versatility.
Put probes on stratios. Probe down cosmic signatures. Do data/relic sites, or combat sites. Find wormholes if your corp is interested in that kind of thing (ninja gas mining in ventures or combat sites or whatever). It can run missions too. Unless you're super-hurting for isk, no reason to get rid of it now. You don't *need* to take it to lowsec either really. If you want to fly the ship, just to fly the ship, you can do that, and it will do fine for gallivanting about high-sec, killing rats, as long as it's not in a L4 mission, that might be quite the challenge for a Stratios.
Disregard people telling you what you should be doing, do what you want. I, for instance wanted to fly a Minmatar missile cruiser, but didn't have anything to use it for. So I bought the Scythe Fleet Issue, and figured it would do well for high-sec combat exploration, which is how I ended up doing that.
The point is, if you want to fly a ship, you can always come up with something to do with it afterwards, and it sounds like the Stratios can handle what you have considered doing with it just fine. |

I agree...to a degree. I once bought a Ashimmu and ran level 3's with it just because it looked cool to me. It was rather inefficient at it but I still had a blast. However some ships are entirely to specialized to do something too far outside their realm of ideal operation. Oderint Dum Metuant |

The concept that you need to be "skilled enough" for lowsec is a fallacy. To survive and have fun in lowsec, all you need is to join a corp (and there are plenty that accept new players). Same as for hisec - Eve's fun come from the social element. |

Especialy since the "skill" you need for lowsec is nothing you can buy in the market, you need personal skill and to gain this you have to go to the lowsec, over and over again.
Even a frigate with all III skills can be a deadly ship when the pilot knows what to do whereas an all V faction fittet BS will mostly just generate expensive lossmails when the pilot is unaware of what to do when in lowsec.
Just buy yourself some cheap frigates, use a clone without implants and go for it. A corp may help but you still will loose a lot of ships. 97% of girls would die if Justin Bieber were about to jump off a cliff. Post this in your sig if you`re part of the 3% yelling,

Here is what you should have said:
"Hello, I'm a dumb...I plan on doing reckless crap in space with an over-priced cruiser not specialized for any of the activities I plan on doing."
"Should I do this ridiculous thing?"
Here is my Answer:
It isn't close attack, it is a medium range support cruiser. Unlike the ishtar it gets no control range or tracking or optimal range bonuses. This leaves it with a less effective drone compliment despite having a slightly larger drone bay than the ishtar. The laser bonus is kinda 'meh' and you're better off fitting auto cannons (no cap and same/better dps) or neuts to get tackle off of you.
It is possible to use the armor resistance bonus to do close range brawling with drones but you need to pick your fights very very carefully as it is easy to get overwhelmed. My suggestion is to fit it like an ishtar that is shield tanked (2x large shield extenders) and go from there with my previous suggestions. Take massive advantage of the cloak, but realize you do have a targeting delay as you decloak.
Never forget to manually pilot. Do not rely heavily on orbiting or approaching or keeping at range as general commands. you are also missing the MWD sig radius reduction the ishtar gets.
Advantage? Probe strength bonus and bonuses to hacking and the like. That is the pve you should concentrate on...also probe down wormholes and go exploring. You will find that the Stratios is less than it was made up to be originally as T2 cloaking ships are largely cheaper and more specialized for sentry type activities.
If you can't yet use tech 2 sentry drones then make that the first thing you start training for now as that makes a huge difference.
Better yet: If you can't fly an ishtar don't bother with the stratios until you get a lot more experience. |

The stratios is great for high sec and low sec exploration. nice cargo space. mobile depot allows refit of tank and also midslots for hacking. has a scaning bonus. can warp cloaked. can tank all the sites.
The stratios is a good choice for tanky dps in covert hot drops.
The stratios is a good choice to scan down null sites and ambush plexing T3's (need to decloak before they actually land due to locking issues) as decent dps, decent tank and can easily neut out a tengu's tank.
For all the things you were talking about other ships are far superior. Both the ishtar and the Gila are better PVE and PVP ships than the stratios. If you are trying to guard miners from gankers then none of these ships are useful at all. (for a variety of reasons). If you are trying to guard miners from belt rats then they don't need guarding as their own drones easily deal with high sec belt rats. Money at its root is a form of rationing. When the richest 85 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion (50% of humanity) it is clear where the source of poverty is. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/20/trickle-down-economics-broken-promise-richest-85 |
