Actually a movie first would be my first option, depends what story you want to tell.
The movie EVE: Second Genesis should end exactly where the game starts. From there onwards series would be better IMHO.
Originally by: Winterblink Personally I'd see it as better suited for a television series on the order of Battlestar Galactica than a movie. There's a lot of story in EVE, too much for a two hour film to really cover.
Besides, with our luck Uwe Boll would helm it.

Originally by: Natasha Kerensky oh gawd, EVE would have to get their story staright first. The EVE Chronicles and Short Stories have so many conflicting facts.
FOR EXAMPLE: Do our ships actually have crews or are they controlled only by the pod pilot?!?!
that would definately need to be addressed before a movie/series would be made
Read the fiction and youll find out our ships indeed do have crew. None of them directly control the ship though. Pod Pilots basivly replaced the entire bridge crew and control the ship, you still need people to fix stuff, keep it clean and to entertain you when the autopilot is taking you somewhere
Edit: Feel free to point out where exactly its conflicting, id like to see it and then we might as well report it so it can be fixed ------------------

Originally by: Benilopax They had crews but now don't atleast players don't anyway.
It wouldneed to be a prequel perhaps even not called EVE just set in the universe of eve.
Ships are linked to the pod and the pod pilot does most of the important stuff, like flying, navigation and fighting, etc. However, there are crews in the pod ships, just not as many as on the non pod ships. This has been repeated continually since the game came out. It was in the (may it RIP) manual in the original box in the US, told how many crew people on each ship and bit of history about the ship design. But the whole point is there are crew people on the ships. The confusion comes from people continually asking because they are new to Eve, and not reading the back storys/history and knowing before they speak, what they are speaking about.

How about the story of a lone ship, or small fleet atttempting to make it through 0.0 space, chased by prirates or one of the imperial fleets,, to make it to a safe outpost, and then make it back again, with a precious cargo, such as ambassodors or something. This would have a backround story of a major war, and these ambassodors will end the war... stuff like that. SOunds like star trek actually....

Edited by: Sevarus James on 01/09/2005 21:42:24 Although there a million stories within EVE that would be a good 'flick'.....the politics, bickering, backstabbing, PERSONALITIES, and war (read: action)....would have to be the story of the beginning of the NVA and the fall of Taggart Transdimensional. Everyone has their favorite stuff, of course, but I haven't seen so much rhetoric, politics and such on a theatrical scale as that. The birth of the PA and the great northern war come in close, but that first big ka-boom in the north had the 'focus' of a few BIG personalities (read: ego's)...to be one helluva 'watch'.
The big fight with CA vs. Everyone else comes to mind as well, but for a film with 'focus' the north seems more cinematic as its focus was on just a few famous people.

They need to cut out most player made content to be able to sell the movie though, not even the most die hard Vin Diesel fan would buy a story about a corporation called Old Farts or Forsaken Empire.
Also if giving any weight to player impact on the galaxy in the movie more than that little kid will ask; 'Who is he, why is he killing that guy? I thought they were friends.'

Seems as if some really are missin' the point. CCP's over-arching goal was to have the PLAYERS be the story, with the empire and such as 'the backstory', not the other way around.
If it was just the Eve-movie with the existing empires, imho this universe wouldn't be worth hangin' around in for 2+ years. --but that's just me.

Nobody would want to watch an Eve movie if it plays out after the same rules as the game, they would have to be altered significantly to make for an interesting screenplay.
- Warping would have to take days and weeks instead of seconds, and ships should be able to meet each other in warp, force the other ship out of warp-transit to fight it.
- Repairing ships? It shouldd take very, very, very long. If your ship is damaged it should not just pop back into a repaired status after running your repairers a few times.
- Drones should acctually be a like starfighters that atack you from a far away carrier ship that you might not even see at that time, drop a few high yield bombs on you, try to destroy your turrets and run before you can even react to the atack.
- Cruise Missiles and Torpedos should acctually be scary as heck, not something you fire in a convenient sixpack every few seconds, but tactical nukes that will follow you into warp and hunt you for hours until you either shoot it down or it has turned you into a heap of slag. Shooting them down would be key to surviving them. They are also not frired from 100km but more like from 100000km
- Turrets on the other hand should not destroy a ship after a few seconds. Once a battle has boiled down to a short range engagement with turrets it should take its sweet time. Acctually destroying a ship should take forever with turrets, once you're shooting at it the objective is not to blow the entire thing to hell but to destroy all of its weapons and propulsion systems so you can send over the marines.
- Marines, yea, those people on your ship that go aboard the other ship and kill the heck out of whoever is there, using all sorts of cool power armor and blaster rifles that melt big holes into anything they hit. Can't have a movie without any of that...
- Battleships are rare, so rare that it's acctually possible to keep track of all the battleships in existence. Also they would all have a name, because no pilots would be such oblivious n00bs that they forget to name their ship. Also nobody would say "There is a Megathron" but much rathrer "There is the *name of ship*" - names matter in movies, things without names are boring.
- Battleships have many many anti frigate weapons. In fact, a frigate doesn't have a prayer against a battleship. But since battleships are acctually rare and not every pilot can just make the choice of flying one that isn't really unfair.
- If a frigate rams a battleship it's also dead.
- In fact, whenever anything rams anything its usually pretty dead.
- Tech 2 ships don't exist. If someone comes up with a type of armor that is three times better then older armor it is immediately installed on every ship, because people in a movie universe aren't total idiots, unlike game universes where universal stupidity is needed to ensure "balance" or whatever.
- If you can only find the resources to make the best stuff ever in lawless space the empires will go there, and make it safe space. In movies you can't just tell people that nobody will claim the most precious resources so that pod pilots can fight over them all day. Again, in movies people have to be smart, otherwise it's not a good movie.
Oh heck, the list goes on and on... There are just dozens of things that would have to be completly different from the game to make an interesting movie. If you made a movie that would show exactly what happens in Eve it would quickly be branded the worst Scifi movie ever, because let's face it, the Eve background is great, but the gameplay is just not movie-worthy...

I think the best medium for EVE would be to commission a series of novels. I'm sure I would like to buy a novel or two set in the EVE universe.
You need to go after the hard core literary Scifi crowd, the kind of crowd that read Ian M. Banks or David Weber.
I'm serious. To do a line of novels isn't going to cost much and there are game franchises that have books in print like Warhammer, Mechwarrior, Magic the Gathering and Warcraft.
The problem of these franchises is that they still read like game franchises or cookie clutter fantasies. EVE has the trappings for a real detailed and immersive universe and is quite suitable for a novel series.

Yea, the universe is nice, but the mechanics of the game universe don't lend themselves to an interesting book.
How are you gonna explain to an intelligent reader what makes tech 2 items so special, why the empires can't manufacture them, why the empires don't go after high grade ore and so on for example... It just doesn't make any sense from a storytelling standpoint.
And also the entire combat etc. in Eve is just not interesting for storytelling with the system in the game.

The Trouble with movies is that there always needs to be a hero and any self respecting hero needs a villain. Making the character a memeber of any of the empires would never work because then CCP would have classified the good vs evil factor and the evil empires would get shafted in the movie which would have a bad influance with the game itself.
The only way i personally see possible is to make a movie about a lone pilot which doesnŠt have strong ties to any of the empires. maybe a Gallente/Caldari or Amarr/Minmatar breed which really doesnŠt belong anywhere and therefore lives in deep 0.0 avoiding Empire space as much as possible. This way the story of Eve can unfold in the Movie/series while the main plot is the life of a lone pod pilot.

EVE has a lot of backplot. I'm sure at least one of the storylines could be turned into a film.
The caldari warrior, who goes through the academy, get's put into his pod, and then goes off on a lone crusade to rescue his bird from the guristas (damsel in distress mission anyone?). However, obviously, it won't be 'next system, blow some stuff, rescue rescue' instead turn it into 'out in 0.0, in the secret starbase ... etc.'.
And then having to deal with the cyberpsychosis effect of the posthuman pod pilot, and the fact that he's transcended so far beyond 'human' that he can never settle down, get married and drop sprogs - such concerns are for those who aren't effectively immortal, with the power of mighty starships under their control. What he really wants to do is go charging into the outer ring and build an empire.
Add in quirky sidekicks, a tight nit bunch of wingmen who 'defect' together, and some tight emotional stuff as one by one they get podded in their run past blockades etc.
The _real_ problem is, that in game, we're always 'in pod'. Which doesn't make for such a good level of emotional depth to the characters. So plenty of scenes needed where character 'interact'.
Hmm, I wonder if I can turn that into a chronical. (Can you submit chronicals?)

Arnold Schwarzenegger as Golan Trevize. The late Sid James as Hardin (if you ask me, Hardin's a ringer for Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond from Carry On up The Khyber). Ray Winstone as Gaius Kador. Michael Gambon as Sarkos. Mr T as Khaldorn Murino. Natalie Portman as Jade Constantine. Chris Tucker as Pulgor.

oh my god! I remember that film i wondered whether it was game based!
David suchet among others were in that movie!
Wasn't too bad cos it had alot of backplot taken as read for the gamers.
But i think eve could do better perhaps a school scene with a history lesson?
Could anyone explain the entire history from 2005 to 106 in 2 short paragraphs?

To be honest, I totally threw out the pod concept when doing Nature Vraie. I always thought a good*****pit/bridge dynamic is more interesting than describing how someone sitting in a pile of goo imposes their will on the ship, in terms of storytelling.
Besides, nobody said I couldn't take a bit of artistic license with the story. ;)
I just read it as either this was before Pod control was introduced, or Val Fournier was in charge of one of the many non pod-piloted ships, since as far as I'm aware most aren't anyway.
Anyway, the more important question is where's part 7?

That's pretty much what I thought about him, was that he was a non-pod pilot. :)
Part 7 is almost done, I've been too busy with work and stuff lately to finish it off. I'll see about getting it done this weekend.

apart from the faction stuff i'd want to see i'd much rather want to see the history of EvE as they players have created on the screen, example: stain vs curse or something along those lines.
