..I think there's one hurdle some people (including me) won't be able to get over. And it's predictable and whiny, I know, but with a game that has such a huge-ish learning curve, it's a big BIG problem.
Ship loss. =)
I didn't actually lose a ship today...but I had enough money to FINALLY ditch my Bantam and move up to a..hmm, was a Badger I think. Anyway...I was snooping in the missions screen, I clicked on a mission...and suddenly my wallet was 335K slimmer.
Well, out the window goes the Badger (I had juuuuust enough to buy it) and I am staring at the prospect of mining tons more pyroxeres, doing fetch missions...I know, I know, suck it up and all that....
Point is, bleh. The sinking feeling I got when I realized I was out all that cash and stuck with my Tonka toy ships for a while yet was, essentially, to no longer care. I dunno...it just took all the shine off the game for me.
In closing, I think it's a superb game and tons of fun, but the penalty for mistakes is just too high for someone with limited playtime like me.
Congrats, makers of EVE...may the Trial garner you tons more new players, you are very deserving!

I'll agree that the game can be very punishing, but without any fanboi-ishness i'll say that the risk-factor in EVE is what makes it a bit more then your other average games :)
I'm sorry to hear if that sort of risk is too big for your likeing, but the only way to avoid them is to study what you want to, or are about to do, as much as you can. Examine every detail before you carry it out, and if that fails, poke someone who might be able to give you an answer on the subject :) ________________________________________ <insert clever/witty comment here>

ship loss HURTS when your in the early stages.. it's less of a sting later on. Insurance HELPS A LOT.. it is your friend :)) Your loss was an unfortunate "Ooopsie" on the Missions screen... you could try to petition. (not a high chance of recovery.. but ya never know) Best advice... Grab the best frig you can afford (Kessie for hunting) bantam for mining.. and you'll be in the pink in no time.. :) "Your Mother was a Hamster.. and your Father smelt of Elderberries!" - traditional French Insult |

Join a player corp and most (reasonably experienced) people will give you 1m isk without a second thought. I've donated to new players several times in the past -------------- The Eve Diplomacy Table

Were you doing a courier mission (not an agent one)? If so, that was the collateral for the mission. Just complete it and you'll get your money back.

Yes, it was the collateral...but the pickup spot is 13 jumps away, the destinations is 7 jumps further...and the total cargo is 1,265 metric unots. My Bantam can hold 297.
By my math, doing the back and forth jumps...it's 62 jumps total to ferry it back and forth. That's just a bit much for me lol.
Thanks for the info though! If there was a way to cancel a mission- say you click on the wrong one - I would be much happier. But I accept it was my mistake.

Edited by: Ranger 1 on 03/06/2005 23:23:40 Well, thats a bad mission to accept without reading it. I guess you didn't read the warning that popped up telling you your cargo wasn't big enough to do it as well? That run, assuming your cargo space figure was not counting putting any type cargo expander on, will take you a couple of hours. It will also return your full collateral money, and pay you more on top of that... although you most likely will not get the bonus. No offense, but if your not ready to read a mission description, not willing to read a size warning before you accept that mission, and not able to spend a couple of hours sorting out your error (and get paid for you time while doing it)... then Eve is not the game for you. However, if your feeling a little bit silly now (still can't figure out how you ignored the "not enough cargo space" pop up), just suck it up and do the bloody mission. You'll pay more attention next time and feel like you actually accomplished something.

Ranger, it wasnt an agent mission, I'm not sure you get those nice warnings from an escrow courier mission.

The problem for you is you won't be able to split the plastic wrap up. If you do you lose the mission/isk. The package must be deliverd in it's plastic wraped state.
EVE is all about learning, and relearning things. The 14 day trial gives you enough time to scratch the surface. You're tone seems postive about the setback, I think you'll do fine in EVE. If you decide EVE is the game for you, join a player corp!

Heck with ship loss.
You got insurance, and you dont always need to pull out the biggest, most expensive thing in your garage. You can just undock in a tech 1 frigate and work well in a team.
The real biggest concern for ME is clone cost.
What if you're broke and stuck in 0.0? What are you supposed to do? Go mine with an alt to buy a clone? Jeez that's unnerving any way you slice it.

your going to have a hard time if you have a problem with reading comprehension. Courier missions have on the screen your pay, the collateral and the size of the cargo in cubic meters. you should have taken the time to explore the basics of your own ship before jumping to the first thing you stumble upon and make a foolish error.
I suggest you avoid courier missions, most are scams and I suspect hoping the player loses the cargo or cannot cut it so they can cash in. I have only done like 2 of them after careful consideration and they were risky transits.

Give me a break guys.
A) Dude said he can accept that its his mistake B) You are missing the point he is trying to make C) His post wasn't a flame against Eve, so don't flame him D) The game is nothing without its player base, so when you see someone new asking a noob question don't be a jerk, just awnser the question or don't post.
You guys were all noobs once as well. I'm sure you made plenty of dumb mistakes.

Well heck. I logged in this evening to see if I could "get back on the horse" so to speak. No sooner did I login and check the price of Badgers again (dunno why but I wanted one *bad*) did I notice...my wallet had over 2 million ISK in it!
I have no clue how it happened, I never clicked on or accepted anything....I am not aware that anyone tried to "trade" with me, but obviously it had to have been a donation! =P
I would like to profusely thank thank thank the person who decided to give a newbie player a leg up. It is highly appreciated.

Edited by: Cutter John on 04/06/2005 08:06:10 if you open your wallet(theres an icon on it on the left side of the screen) and go to the "journal" tab, it will show all transactions of money going into and out of your bank. you might have to click on the "Load" button to load the transactions. the names of your benefactor(s) will be there (next to a large deposit) if you wish to say thank you to them.
oh and hang in there. theres nothing so sweet as crawling into your first battleship after a solid month of mining.

no no no! You're all wrong!
Just needs more "newbie content" either in-game or out-game. Example : Newbie Guides. Experience players don't run into the trouble most "New Players" have. I can make a new char and pick a trade and be in it in a week. New players can't, there for my experience overcomes them. So we need more docs on what to do in eve. As in more sites and more players stepping up and doing good stuff.

To be honest I had no idea what I was supposed to do in my first days of EVE so I can understand it can be a bit frustrating to begin with. Especially if you decide to pick something to do for the next days and find out that you have about a solid hour of reading to do just to understand what the hell you are doing.
My advice to you is to do missions, the normal ones stay away from player made courier missions, if you are playing solo. If you want to do something with a group then check out the corp recruitment forum and see if you can't find a corp that accepts new players and looks to be pretty decent guys. They might be reluctant to let in a trial account player but I know at least that EVE University will let you in. __________ Capacitor research |

i personally thank god, and my friend who was there to give me 10 mill, 30 mill wortha skillbooks to help me when i started.
Ship loss is depressing, but sadly it is neccisairy, if ships just respawned, pvpers would feel they hadn't accomplished anything. (freelancer anyone?)
far as learning curve goes there are many tutorial missions, some teaching you more than others, you could always ask people in help channel, always renember to train learning skills first is a good plan. this here's mah sig': My Quote: "You can call me a carebear all you want, but your still an arrogant slimeball" |

I just lost my ship and I have to say this is excruciatingly frustrating. I've only been playing for 3 days and I finally got a decent frigate. Combat is kinda sketchy in this game and I couldn't figure out how to stop attacking a distant target and start attacking the closer one that was pulverizing me. And I never did!
It's not that I died that makes me mad, it's the amount of time I would have to spend buying a new ship and equiping it again with lasers and other stuff. I estimate it would take several hours of jumping and flying around, which is absolutely ridiculous. 12 jumps just to get to a system that sells the ship I lost, then any number of jumps to buy equipment again etc...you've got to be kidding me.
I was rather enjoying this game up to this point. The people in this game are AWESOME, I've never, ever played a MMO with such kind and considerate players. I really mean that too, the EVE community rules.
But this just seems too frustrating, I mean if you HAVE to deal with this EVERY time your ship blows up, that's insane. How many hours have you veteran players spent just replacing your ship?
The stuff I've read about PVP sounds even more discouraging.

just need to learn to shop in the right places. You can get everything you could possibly need in and within 4 jumps of yulai, rens, tash, jita, nonni, the list goes on. Just look at your map for 1.0's and .9's with plenty of people in them, and you can probably buy stuff there just fine. _______________________________________________________

I was in the starting area but due to some newbie confusion I ended up making a 16 jump trip to find a new npc to give me a mission.
I also don't know what any of this 1.0 .5 stuff means
