They are very underwhelming. Everybody i talked to hoped that they are unfinished and that this is also why CCP did not ask for feedback yet. They currently look like bigger missile explosions and are far to quick over.
even the largest of them are rather unspectacular
examples how explosions could look like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=d6PRJMddV4E#t=58s http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=kjit531Z5Qs#t=576s

I had forgotten how amazingly well Nexus captured the thrill of space battles, so much better than EVE, I dare say.
Anyways, during the Duality test, even though there were no explosion effects dying ships drifted away in a very cool fashion. I thought those were part of the new explosions, because it did look way more dramatic than what we currently have, but alas, it seems it was only a bug or something. New explosions are indeed underwhelming.
P.S: Even Homeworld 2, with its ancient graphics, did it better. http://youtu.be/fBsyHDGAo5c?hd=1&t=5m15s Make it idiot-proof and someone will make a better idiot. |

i agree with this. prolonging the popping of ships is very cool.
Have the pod appear at the begining of the animation so that when it warps off, it is leaving a still exploding ship behind. |

The possibility to create new ones should be the opportunity to unleash your imagination, CCP ! Not to, finally, make realistic explosions for citadel cruise missiles.. (and still, I'm too gentle :p) *Yelling "Manticooore !" on teamspeak* |

Capitals definitely do need to have an awe-inspiring explosion effect I think, but I'd find things like this harder to justify with smaller ships like cruisers and especially frigates. And for the 'ship is out of control' portion, I very much think it should briefly behave like how ships did in that bug, just kind of veering off course and spinning slowly, before exploding. The bigger the ship class the longer it takes before it actually goes off, I guess. |

What happened to this? Seriously. This needs to make it into the game at some point. It would be great if every other ship had similar destruction effects as well: A cluster of explosions leading up to the final, major explosion. It would be great if you could see escape pods jettisoning out of the hull once you hit structure, and once the final blow lands, your pod ejects, thus leaving the exploding ship behind. |

I agree fpr the fanfest effect, but you must know that you're alone in your ship, so I don't see who you could eject before your own pod :p
---
The main problem with these new ship explosions is that we are missing the dramatis side that they could reflect. As show before, even samples from nexus (2004..)shows more dramatic visuals.
In a more basic observation, there is not a clear distinction of the moment were a ship dies on the test server. True story, I wondered where were my buzzard until I realized I just killed it half a minut ago by firing too much on him, when I wanted to test the new targeting UI. On TQ I would have seen this big blue flash.
So, to bring together these two aspects, I would suggest to see some distinct explosions on the target ship at the moment of it's death. Short lighting effects clearly indicating that the ship is now dead. The pod ejects at this time. Then, after a few seconds were the ship continued to move, burning, in space (exaclty like it used to do on the test server due to a bug), it explodes with a awsome effect. The pod can even see it's own ship exploding for the big final ! *Yelling "Manticooore !" on teamspeak* |

A lot of EVE's backstory suggests that there is crew aboard the ships and that you are not alone on board (though since you are locked inside the capsule you have no intereaction with them). Also several times before the subject of making the crew an asset with abilities and training etc. has been discussed, whereupon the destruction of the ship will leave part of the crew KIA.
However when it comes to the ship explosions, what I'd like to see is something like this: Ship structure HP reaches 0 and the ship starts to explode, your pod is ejected as the ship drifts off (if you were moving, some indication of the ship spinning out of control woud be awesome here), it starts to break up and explode. For small ships like frigates and destroyers it would happen very quick, while as the ships gets larger the process takes longer time with more smaller explosions and fires building up to a final, large and bright explosion as the capacitor and warp core melts down and blows. For capital and super capital ships this should result in a epic explosion. They are huge behemoths of the heavens and they should go out with propper bang.
The effects that I've seen so far, IMHO are worse then the old ones... even the effect of a capital jumping in and landing on field gives a better sensation of a cool explosion, even though it isn't an explosion at all.

I saw CCP testing the lock breaker with massive npc spawns, then a massive group explosion when done. The combined explosions looked awesome. Yet that took like 100 ships overlapping for a great explosion. And you would never recreate that as fleets are always low settings. A players ship explosion should be scaled way up from its relative size. It should be an event when a ship explodes. The effect should be as it is for NPCs as that happens all too often and isn't special. |

The new effect is....plane and simply....crap. A titan blew up, a ship of 15km size, and it makes a "fart" in space. No shockwave to be seen, no big flash of light, no orgasmic sense of satisfaction when you kill that monstrosity.
This effect looks a lot like current missile effect only with more color. |

yeah, but to be honest i don't care much about titans. If you see them your client is in dia show mode anyway...

I recorded 20 seconds on the second mission of advanced military tutorial on the test server, to show how frigates are exploding (same for NPC and player ships by the way).
For me, NPC explosions are good, but way too short and flat for a player ship. Without the "display empty modules" option (showing empty modules dissapearing 'cause the pod doesn't have any slot), and insurance mail, a noob would barely notice this destruction of his ship...

Its not about the titan bang, its how a biggest booom in space is crap and then we cant expect smaller ships that are almost insignificant to have better effects. Honestly, if CCP thinks that this is awesome effect and plans to put it in game as it is, makes me think they hired Casey Hudson and his "artistic integrity" shield. |

Why have the explosions in eve been watered down? They use to be so nice and powerful looking, now they are crap... come on CCP really? WTF!? Like what the frack is going on for real totally!? They need to be bigger! Like they use to, bring back the blue explosions that look like a nuke went off for every ship. Now it just looks really sad. Explosions without a huge flash and giant ball of blue heat are not pleasing anymore. I actually enjoyed that. |

Great thread.
Hope to see some updates from devs soon about this. To be honest I think that they can improve a lot the new explosions. Immortality is only a word. All that exists can die. Every living thing has a weapon against which it has no defense. Time. Disease. Iron. Guilt.

Chunks of ship flying off into space would be nice. Having fragments drifting near the wreck and lingering flames and smaller explosions leading up to a big boom would be cool. Fires lingering and then imploding as fuel sources burned out, and lingering glows to parts of the Hull and drifting fragments would be awesome.
Might be a bit much to ask though. zubzubzubzubzubzubzubzub |

While I agree with the opinion that the new explosions are a bit underwhelming, I expect them to look better once we've got the new hull damage effects as well (as shown during fanfest). Also I think seeing wrecks drifting a bit might look awesome instead of having the ship gone within a split second. Looking for more thoughts? I suspect we won't see anything major aesthetically until the V3 and/or DX11 projects are completed. The former will be completed next year. Very exciting. |

Way too short.
Could possibly use the same animation and just make it last longer? And maybe with a super flashy explosion at the end when a super cap dies. Everyone in system should know a titan just died, and where. It should go supernova. |

+1 for this idea
there were a little polished up explosions in a sisi-patch back some time, i think it was the crucible-patch, they never went live for i-dont-know reason. at the moment its very unsatisfying, a ship with a reactor sized of an atomic plant even for the smallest of ships and when it goes boom it only does "pffffff....."

yes that would be awesome, and make it so everyone in front and behind it gets has much damage has if they where hit by a doomsday to, with a rush of gas and extract materials jetting out of both ends. well id like if you where not at the rigth place while a capital with a DD exploded that you'd probably die for it... or if a capital with a jump drive explodes it makes damage to anyone within a range... and there should be a sure difference between a capital with a jumpdriven and one without (like in colors size and damage serounding gets) and one with a Super capital Capacitor (mother ships and titans) and the ones that have a DD fitted
and maybe make different explosions with armor fitted vs shield fitted ships? ones more electric the other is just melted metals.... think about it to more different explosions you make the more il want to blow every ship up...... maybe it lots of work but every smartbomb explosions are different in some way a bit, lasers amo makes for different colors, thats all im talking about here :) little differences not all ships should explode blue... |

I would love to see better or bigger or just more... something... for explosions.
I understand the CCP wants people to be able to have the players do three things at once: Keep their graphics settings at the highest level their hardware will allow, keep effects turned on and keep up a playable framerate even when things get really busy. And I imagine that's why they aren't going over the top with explosions.
Perhaps rather than asking for epic-huge deathstar explosions as the standard, and assuming that anyone with non-top end hardware will just turn them off, we should be lobbying for levels of explosions... Say 'off' for really crappy hardware or huge fights, 'low' like the ones shown here which looks ok but won't nuke your GPU, and 'high' where things look AWESOME. |

Yes.. Because the majority of EvE players don't make epic 1600 vs 1600 fleet fights... (That are probably only epic by their names, and will put your hardware on it's knees anyway.) *Yelling "Manticooore !" on teamspeak* |
