Edited by: Information Agent on 31/08/2011 03:50:37 The thing with consoles is, they are designed for short term, fast burn gameplay, in that you can switch a console on, play a few rounds of 'generic fps x' then shut it down and do something else. When I switch on my xbox, I do it so I can have a 30 min blast of something and not feel the need to be pulled into something thats going to take a long time to complete, console gaming is carefree gaming tbh.
Hypothetical: Add srs internet spaceships to the console platform and you either get the diehards who will play Dust because they play EVE or you get the 'quick blast' guys that will move on to the next title that comes along. Maybe both to start with, but soon there will only be the diehards, and the number of those is evident in the server population graphs of EVE, not very many for a console game.
If Dust is linked to EVE then purely by the mechanics of how EVE works and is, a long term investment will need to be made to Dust in order to progress and achieve things that any other fps can give the gamer in far less time. Will console gamers really wake up early on their days off work/school or stay up late on work/school days to attend a cta planetside for some pc using Eve alliance/corp leader that they don't know? I wonder what the level of 'commit' is in Dust in order for it to be played in the manner that Eve demands of it.

My prediction is that it will fail miserably. Another medicore first person shooter in a sea of medicore first person shooters.
CCP failed to realize that Eve is all they have. They should have invested in Eve, but now they have ruined themselves for ever.

Well what people that dont play this game fail to realize (ans is likely why they ***** an moan when they try to play it) is that this game takes commitment to play. I dont honestly see consolers getting up at 2 am their time just to run an op

Thanks for the link... can't wait. CS gameplay was unique and valve are good at polish.
I loved the part that console players are limited to 5v5 matches, while PC gamers can run custom. Valve knows how to take advantage of each platform's strengths.

Never liked CS. Too much rampant cheating. when the first match you get in you move a 1/4 of an inch into the open an a guy from across the entire board nails you with a headshot, and does it every time its time to go. Or find your own aimbot -------- CCP knows better than the players whats good for their game. SOE knew what was best for SWG too. Better than all those players that left too. It is an FPS. It looks like it will have a lot of elements that Halo has in it. IF they give it something unique and keep the people happy it will do fine.
It might not sell a million copies but who knows. Will people continue to play it. Maybe. And sense it is a console game you will have Dust 2 and Dust 3 etc etc. I don't really care at this point too far out.

Cheating is a part of all the FPS these days. If Dust is popular enough there'll probably be one for it as well. Though Valve Anti-cheat is a lot better than the old "Punkbuster" I think.
That said, death to snipers.

U would have to bring in warriors to secure the next dysprosium and/or promethium moons. On surface mineral depletion will not work.
Warriors, technicans, machinery, every ****, has to be transported to the new moon. All Interactions between stars has to be done by New Eden pilots. Special carriers need to be invented ( like a flying "moving on stations" thing ) Speed of these ships should be up to their masses which means 15m/s or less Getting into warp is more than one hour as is getting out of warp Dust Soldiers as New Eden pilots might die underway, because - who are the alliances claiming the moon ? some excerpts from a recent article
rough translation:
Quote: Icelandic game company CCP Games did present Dust 514 on Gamescom 2011 in a playable form. Sadly we were not allowed to get hands-on time ourselves and video recording was not allowed either. Instead, [CCP] Creative Director Atli Mßr Sveinsson took the gamepad and played for us. According to CCP the client version we were shown was somewhat older than the one used in the E3 trailer. It [the client build] dates back to when the EVE Online servers did successfully connect to the Playstation 3 for the first time. This is probably also the reason for permitting us from recording. It was indeed noticeable that the game is still in an early development stage.
sounds great...
when you have to demo a more than 2 months old (buggy) build to journalists your project is certainly proceeding a-okay

My prediction: Interaction between Dust and Eve will be minimul and take the form of some hacked largely meaningless stats being passed back and forth between the two games!
I understand the concept, but people are living in a dream world if they think CCP are going to attempt to make the two games dependent on each other. That is commercial suicide.
The theory: Eve Players will hire mercenaries (Dust Players) to fight the ground battle. The reality: Why would Dust players sit around wanting to RP the acceptance of such a contract. So Eve players will in fact interact with NPC mercs.
How will Eve effect Dust? The theory: Eve players will secure the surrounding space, ferry in the invasion force and provide supplies. The reality: Dust players are not going to wait around for 2 or 3 hours while an Eve op is forming up. Thus, the Eve invasion fleet will spawn a dust instance/server upon their arrival over the planet, at which point Dust players will be able to join the game. However, players will have to join both sides at that point. The defending dust players may be reduced in numbers, but it certainly won't be by the same ratio of Eve players, namely "5 Godzillion to 1", it will be more like 2 to 1, it has to be something reasonable to make it a game for the defending Dust players, while their shortage of numbers would have to be compenstated by other 'defensive' advantages. As for ferrying in supplies, there may be some random supply drops, the numbers dependant on the strength of the blockade or whether the defending Eve force break it. But it will be a minor game changing effect for the dust players.
How will dust effect Eve? The theory: The outcome of the Dust battle will decide whether the Eve invasion force takes the planet or not. The reality: The 5 Godzillion Eve invasion force is not going to accept one defending Dust player with an aimbot ruining their day. Dust players will continually die and respawn, leave and join the game. Thus the dust battle will merely add a random time element, based on the relative casualties, to the period that the Eve players have to hold the space around the planet. It will be possible that a good Dust defending force will delay the invasion long enough for a swift Eve counter attact to drive off the invasion force. But in the event of an unopposed invasion by 5 Godzillion Eve players, the invasion will ALWAYS be successful regardless of the outcome of the Dust battle.
How will CCP reconcile different peaks and troughs in player numbers between the two games?
Example 1: Johnney logs onto Dust during Eve downtime. What happens, does he have to wait half an hour?
Example 2: Huge alliance XXX plans a simultanous invasion of 1000 planets during their enemies off peak hours. Where the hell do they get the Dust players from?
Looking at this last and having an idea how CCP work, I believe this will be hacked, so that there is no real link between a particular Dust game and an Eve invasion. Eve invasions will see an average time (based on fleet sizes) + minor random element to reach completion. Dust... some hash, I don't really care enough to think about it.

I really like that idea of a ship in the game mainly for the benefit of dust players. Like a base of operations for Dust players, having weak anti ship capabilateis, but also giving an advantage to dust players when it comes to transfering them from system to system or planet to planet.

You forgot to say all console gamers have AIDS.
On a serious note, millions and millions of PS3 consoles have been sold. I believe back in 2007 there was like 7 million PS3s sold. Lets say 90% of those PS3 users are stupid tards. That leaves 700,000 good people......How about 95% of console players are stupid tards.... That leaves 350,000 good people.. How many people are playing EVE again? That was around 2007, how many PS3s have been sold now in 2011?
But even if its still 7 million copies sold at 2011, and even if 95% of all PS3 players were stupid kids who are CoD die hards....that still leaves 350,000 people....Come on....There are normal good console players out there. CCP and EVE does not require the entire PS3 community......5% would be amazing.

Edited by: Cal Gin on 31/08/2011 16:31:05 The thing that makes Dust different from other games is that:
1) the game will be persistent... not like COD where you get 20 maps and that's it. Dust will have multiple maps and unlike games where vehicles are just lying around the map you actually have to strategically deploy your vehicles which leads to my second point 2) Dust is far more than a FPS it is and FPS, RTS, and EVE all thrown into one... the same thing that keeps EVE players from the one dimensionality of games like WOW is the same thing that will win over people who play COD and other FPS's
Fears of how the game will be when it is released is pretty groundless or at the very least a bit premature... the game was demoed at Gamescom and according to what was reported the intergration between eve and dust was happening there in real time... and the fact that the game will be in Beta for 6 months before the game launches so that should be plenty of time to iron out most of the wrinkles...

Quote: Here's a Eurogamer hands-on preview of Incarna from 2008, yes, 2008! Read it, compare to what we've got in 2011, and weep:
- When you dock your ship, you can choose to exit your pod to your captain's quarters. Your large, organic pilot's pod leads to a dressing room for choosing costume options, and a generically curvy and antiseptic space-lounge with open-plan kitchen (and a box of "protein delicacies") and animated news screen. An elevator takes you down to the station itself.
- You'll be able to rent a "socket", buy a bar blueprint and insert it. Set your own restrictions on the clientele, hire NPCs to populate the bar (including dancers), even craft dialogue rules for them to create your own little quasi-missions and adventure storylines. Then sit back and watch the beer money roll in.
- Corporation offices will probably be the true hubs of station activity. They'll be split into two areas, a foyer open to everybody where programmed NPCs spout recruitment slogans and give away stuff, and a meeting room for members.
- On the development agenda, but not promised for the first release, is a shared tactical map, fed by information from scouts, that can be used to organise logistics and battle operations on a macro level. On a micro level, there will be mini-games, including a tactical strategy game played out on hexagonal board ("very good if I say so myself", says Olafsson).
I don't hold much hope for Dust tbh.

So Dust turns out to be a freakin' FPS on a Console?!
Yeah this is gonna turn out REALLY WELL.
1. FPS on a Console is doing immeasurably WRONG. 2. Why put the game that is supposed to integrate into life with a PC-MMO world on a console? Just doesn't make sense to me other than a $$$ standpoint (i.e. Sony paid CCP a ton of money).
I mean I love the idea of a FPS that integrates with EVE but would've loved to have it on PC where real FPS is played. Imagine playing in a fleet that just took over space-superiority of a system and then switching to FPS to go take over the capitol-planet's HQ building? THAT would've been fun.
Now, all you're going to have is players on PC and players on Console not really getting along much and quite possibly the PC players orbital bombarding FPS planets just to grief them. |

Apparently, the console gamers will be able to launch their own version of a Dreadnaught volley up into our domain and obliterate whichever unlucky Dread happens to be planning to bombard them. So, that kinda balances out, but only if a billion isk Dread is comparable in cost to the Dusties kit and equipment which kinda stretches our 'fictional reality' just a little.
Not to mention if Dreads in EVE get buffed for more anti-super ability, then the cost of Dreads will most likely rise. I wonder if the Dusties kit and equipment will have an element of EVE's ever changing market prices, it would be most irritating if Dusties kit ends up being either incredibly expensive compaired to the enemy/friendly orbiting fleet or if their stuff goes the other way and becomes so comparatively cheap that its hardly worth commiting a single capital to help/hinder them.
I feel in order for either game to stand a chance of working together then there will need to be some sort of synergy between the two on engagement costs and also with the potential rewards on both platforms. This, is just one thing that could break Dust in a sea of thousands of things that could have the same effect weighed against its sole saving grace of being 'cross platform', it is a one trick pony. If I was a betting man, my money would be on the safe odds of it failing, not for being a bad game or for it being on consoles rather than pc, but rather for it being far too much of an 'ask' for a small dev company to make happen in a way that compliments the existing game of EVE.
In my honest opinion, its a fruitless waste of time, resources and man power in the quest to reclaim past glory for innovating rather than following the crowd, and its being achieved by 'following the crowd' at the added expense of CCP's percieved sanity, reputation and good judgement.
TL;DR : Dust as a game linked to EVE on a totally different platform is far too complex to pull off properly, a thousand things could ruin it, and it only has one unique thing going for it compared to other fps's. Without EVE its just another generic fps and any console player without access to EVE will view it as such.

PC shooters dont sell anymore, sorry to hurt your feelings but they just dont. they wanted a new market for new income. dust players do not have to play for eve players, they can have random matches, in short if eve dies dust doesn't it just loses the eve connection. so the grief thing wont happen also im sure the cost of the grief will be more then its worth
even if ccp paid sony to make dust on ps3, it will sell more on ps3 then it ever would on pc. console gamers have no issue with pc players, its pc***s that rage about consoles because games are almost always optimized for console then ported to pc now. quit crying and make the switch like 99% of the world. Another thing to think about, us PC gamers as a whole are pretty laid back and relaxed about games. Eve's patches can take a while to bring out, sometimes they do wonders for the game and other times they break a few things or have weird side effects, but while we rage on the forums, we still patiently wait for fixes or news of fixes and workarounds.
Consoles are not as easy to get patches and fixes to, there are hoops to jump trough, especially with Sony Online. They run their own tests on hotfixes and patches and will send back anything that isn't up to release standard and although they act quickly with hotfixes, they are notoriously slow with larger patches, often taking a few weeks looking over the content and sending it back to the developers with a sticky note displaying 'unfit for deployment' and a long list of gripes for the devs to work through. Delays like this are easily avoided with patches that are rigorously and methodically tested prior to dispatch to Sony, now I stare blankly at CCP's patching history with a slight twitch in one eye.
The other downside to a badly delayed patch is, well, just how long is a gamer to wait for one game to be fixed when theres a hundred similar games that are not suffering problems. The console market is a fast paced and demanding world, its not due to console gamers having short attention spans or adhd, they suffer neither, its down purely to the huge flow of competition from other games companies. Tbh, in order to compete in the console arena with a fps, it better be a darn good fps that works perfectly out of the box and has content of 'excellence' quality 'deliver'ed on time every time, or the target market will quickly walk away.
Like I said in my previous post, theres a lot that can break this 'Dust' game and not all of it is obvious to everyone.
